    I am so jealous of you
    Having such an amazing teacher
    And coworker
    But i am also so amazed at how far you have come in such a short time
    (Again.... great teacher)
    Many blessings to you and your future as a Luthier😊

    You watched Caleb glue those cracks and piped in @ 4:50 with the reminder about cleating the crack due to the pressure on top.

    ..I would've left that beautiful honey colored finnish showcasing that amazing tight straight grained wood alone. That wood's just too beautiful to hide any of it with a sunburst finnish.

      I agree. Reminded me of Bob Dylan's refinished Nick Lucas.

    I had luck with steaming dent trough the finish, when my macro lense drop on my top and left big half-moon gauge in the wood. I was suprised how perfect it leveled up after the steaming, hard to see hairline crack in the finish is all whats left :)

    This old beauty is definitely worth the trouble. It has become the go to acoustic guitar for all blues players. string it up with some 9s and you will see why. Almost plays itself.

    I also swear that CA glue is the only stuff to use for cracks. I have yet to have one crack spread that i used CA glue on. I cant say the same for some other products i used.

    I was interested in... everything really, but in what Caleb was doing when gluing the back back on and he set the neck angle at the same time. I've watched that part several times but I'm just not getting what he did. That was a cool 'trick'.
    And we're wondering what kind of music Caleb(sp?) is into. Is he bluegrass maybe? Or maybe some kind of contemporary country, avant-garde, rusty metal? (😉)

  • @zapa1pnt
    @zapa1pnt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    ????? Jerry, when removing the back, on an instrument to be refinished, would it not
    be prudent to use heat, to break the glue, to avoid damage?
    A genuine question.

    • @fenderlead1
      @fenderlead1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunate we didn’t get in the answer. I watched him use finger planes to plane away a bridge plate / cross brace. Later in the video he said almost all the glue joints are hide glue. Heat, hot knives, and very judicious use of a very small amount of warm water should have removed the bridge plate far more effectively than using finger planes

    I have an identical sealing iron. It works very well for fingerboard extensions and even entire fingerboards, but it does take a while. Sometimes I switch to a full-sized iron when I get past the body. Has part 2 (or 3?) already been on the channel?

      @@zapa1pnt Good question. I should have asked if the completion of the work on this guitar had already been posted. I thought that Jerry had already posted the final work on this guitar, regardless of its numerical designation. At the time I thought that there was a gap. Bad memory, I suppose.

    It was me! I proudly hit the unlike button. Make no mistake, in the worlds eyes, this young man has done no wrong! Caleb I have watched your video time on Jerry's channel and I've seen your channel. You don't need me to tell you that you have a very bright future as a luthier/repairman. But my opinion, everyones got one, this is mine. You have done what Jerry had stated in a previous video. His concern for hiring someone to lighten his load, train em up and they leave. I don't know if this was a prior arrangement between you and Jerry, I don't recall Jerry stating as such in any video. And judging from his obvious disappointment as he's holding the unfinished guitar I kind of think there was no arrangement . Regardless, I personally would not have any of my guitars on your bench period. Let the hate comments RAIN. Caleb, this is not personal. I'm sure your mature enough to understand this. I'm commenting here publicly for a reason. I support and appreciate Jerry for every free video he has posted pretty much teaching anyone who has an internet connection the beautiful art of guitar building/repairing plus the multitude of tips and tricks relating to all things practical. Jerry, if I could afford to stay at your retreat then mate I'd be on the next flight out of Melbourne! That is a guarantee. Jerry you are my favourite internet luthier. I have learnt more from you than any other luthier PERIOD

    No offense to the kid but that guitar was bastardized. I would be beyond furious if that were my guitar. That's a vintage gibson not a high-school shop project. What a total abortion. Unbelievable. Jesus

    Could you possibly bad mouth the kid any more? I wonder why he left? 🤔

    • @PJBonoVox
      @PJBonoVox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bad mouthing an ex-employee is poor form. It's Jerry's responsibility to make sure his apprentice is doing the right stuff. If he's too busy, he needs to decline work. If folks are taking the training and leaving, that's just as much on Jerry as it is on the apprentice. Pay more, create a better work environment or any combination of those. I think this is the last video I'll be watching here.

      I'm pretty sure I heard Jerry say Caleb was starting his own repair service. I would guess if that's true then he's working out of his house (garage or basement). I would guess that's so he can be at home to help be a parent - based on Ben Wright's comment above that he gave birth.

      @@zapa1pnt it's been in many videos finished ( tru oil finish) and it's not a very good re finish at all. As a repair person of over 30 years that is a very amateur attempt and on a vintage instrument it just makes it worse.
