I was born in Baxter and raised in Cookeville from 1929 to 1947. In 1946, my mother was crossing Hwy 70 from Bennetts Grocery store across from the Planing Mill; she was struck by a car on Sat in the month of May, died on Monday. I was 16 yrs. old. My life was forever changed. Exactly one year later, 22 May, 1947, I was inducted into the Army Air Corp. I was gone from Cookeville for over 40 years. Moved back in 1988. Nobody even knew me, time had passed 'till I was just a stranger there. Charley Pride has a song, "in the middle of nowhere". The words so fit my life that I could have wrote that song. I left again in '02, never to return. If I could go back in time, I would like to go back to when this tape was made, 1941. I was a very happy lad then, but I am thankful to know that at one time, I onced passed this way. :(

Spaced Man -Was wondering when I would get a reply to my comment. I was born on Cane Creek in Baxter Oct. 24, 1929. Moved to Cookeville in '36. Moved again in '37 to Gentry St, (now called Polly Dr.) Gentry st was located between Scott St and Burgess Falls Rd. ( now s. Willow). Butch Ealey lived 3 houses from me on Gentry St. He started work at the Model laundry firing the boiler sometime later. His Dad worked there, drove the delivery truck with one of the back doors missing. Butch then worked at the Red X service station across from the Pilot Knob Dairy on Hwy 70. He stayed with that outfit thruout his life. He married Joyce late '50's. I first met her in '58 while on vacation, they lived on 3d st. If you will go to Google, ask for 419 3d st, you will get a picture of him standing at the end of his driveway with his dog. I left Cookeville May 1947, went into the Air Corp. Came back to live in 1988. Left again in '02, haven't been back since. All my family are buried at the Judd Cementry. I spent 40 years in Calif. but went home on vacation every year.
People I knew in Cookeville; Bud Scott, William and Carl Holder, Joe Farley, Loyd Maynard, Jack Holloway, Willene Delaney, (lived next door), Roy Parrott, Dallas Frazier, Gus Braswell, Glasco Kirby and Bill Judd of Judds Motel on Hwy 70, 2d cousin.
Glad for your reply, what is your name?, perhaps I know you. Bob.

Spaced Man -Are you Butche's son??? How are you related? I have heard him mention your name. I remember in the early '90's, Butch took me out to a house that was being built, I believe going toward Algood. It had a basement that would park 15 cars. Wires comming in thru the walls to power computers. I understood at the time he was some sort of investigator. Was that you or your dad? Also, is Anna Jo still alive? Also Ruth. In 1988 to 2001, I lived in honeybrook. Butch's daughter lived one street over. She lived close to a creek that would flood her property. Butch and I were the same age, however, growing up, I spent a lot of time doing things with Bill, he was younger, but Butch was older to me. He liked to do different things, but as we got older, that relationship reversed. After I contacted you this morning, I thought later it had to be a family member that contacted me. I even remember the dog's name the Ealey's had in the '40's; Frisky. Bob.

Cookeville is a great little town. I was born there in 1929, left in '47. Returned in '88, left in '02; never to return. As in the Charley Pride song, ...."and I said goodbye forever to that little town, in the middle of nowhere".......the song fit the town, I fit the song. Sad! Lots of years, lots of memories.

I enjoyed many trips there with my Dad. I loved the fall when the leaves were in their brilliant colors. I have many childhood memories of Cookeville too.

Many comments about Cookeville have been deleted, I suppose, when Google+ shut down. Many of mine are gone. I was born in Baxter in 1929, and grew up in Cookeville. Went to Cookeville City School, near post office, school is gone now. I year high school, near Tech. Joined Air Force in 1947. Left Cookeville in 1947, returned there to live in 1988, then left in 2002, never to return. My family are buried at Judd Cementery.
During the war years, 1941-'45, they trained cadets at Tech to be pilots. They flew Piper Cub planes. Would see them overhead of my house, instructor would put the plane into a stall, kill the engine, pupil would pull it out of the stall, restart engine. Never a crash. This got me interested in being a pilot. Had some great years in Cookeville. Would like to relieve them again, and would, if I could go back to 1941. But life has but one pass, you can only go thru it one time.
