  • Rotten Wood? No Problem. Easy Fix that Lasts! The Patching that will not Pop Out
In this video, I show you how I fix rotted wood that is impractical to replace. One note is that the house was treated for termites just before the repair. Filler and wood expand and contract at different rates so the patch will pop out if it does not have a flexible sealant in between the layers of the wood and the patch.

    Transcript:
In this video, I'm going to show you how we take a rotten raft or tail and fix it. So that'll last when so here's the end result a lot of times.
If you just fix it with some sort of putty or Bondo it'll pop right out. So here's how we avoid that. A few things you need is a wire brush you'll need some sort of polyurethane type sealant you'll also need some Vaseline and then you're also gonna need some Bondo.
so the first thing that we do is we take the rafter tail and we coat it with some sort of wood treatment whatever you like doesn't really matter which type that you use actually the first thing you do is your wire brush.
It so here's just what it looked like beforehand we just cleaned out all the loose stuff you don't have to make it smooth it's actually good to have some nooks and crannies then we put a coat of polyurethane siding sealant caulk on it that's not Bondo that's a polyurethane sealant then we take the Bondo out and I'm putting the Bondo on top of the polyurethane caulk right now.
So the key is to get the polyurethane caulk spread out underneath all of the places where the Bondo is going to adhere if you try to get the Bondo to go straight on the rafter tail then the Bondo will it'll when the wood expands and contracts with the different temperatures then the bond will eventually just pop out.
So by putting the polyurethane caulk behind it basically any kind of caulk that will adhere to the wood end of the bond and then here is the what I do is I put Vaseline on a form and then you'll see this is where I'm taking the bond and I'm putting it on the Vaseline coated form that I just created so back to the idea of the polyurethane caulk that will stretch so any type of stretching caulk that will bond to the bond and to the wood is what you're looking for.
So now I'm taking this bond and I'm putting it up towards the top since we're on a vertical plane and it's gonna want to slide down and that Vaseline is completely coating that wood so it's not going to stick to the wood it's gonna give me a nice flat surface and I'm just working it up into the corner as much as I can.

Thank you for actually showing how to do the repair-as opposed to the other TH-camrs that say it in the title, then never show it. 👍🏻

What a brilliant idea! I have several rafters on my shed roof that are partially rotted but not enough to replace.. Been searching TH-cam trying to find out how to repair rot to form w/out replacing. Poof! Here you are...I'll follow up on how it turns out! 🤞

Saw your reply to someone else, seems like putting the bondo over uncured polyurethane would be the best route. Thank you!👍🤗

Cool! I like how the plywood grain will print onto the bondo. Will give it a try!

I live in central Florida. I am going to use bondo to repair some termite damage in the bathroom near the ceiling, inside the wall. Is it necessay to use the polyurethane caulk? It doesn't get very cold here in the winter, the coldest it gets is 27 degrees.

I don't know if your still rockin in the field, but I have a question about your procedure? Q: After hardener dries, do you allow the polyurethane caulk to dry before sandwiching the wood with the bondo? I'm about to give your method a go! :)

    Nice, Thanks for the ideas!
What about using Copper Green wood preservative as the treatment? Will the Bondo/Caulk stick to that? It's an oil based product, but can be painted with oil based primer.

i like the idea as i may need this on y house. im replacing fascia. But how is this different than attaching another 2x6 to the original rafter??? especially since you habe open soffit. Would thhis hold without screws?? ill be working on MY RAFTERS BETWEN THE SOFFIT AND DECKING

I'm thinking about using your technique on several rafter tails at my house that have termite damage. They tented the house before we bought it, but they didn't make any repairs. Have you modified this at all over the last couple of years? Are your rafter tails still holding up? Thank you!

Would love to see a 2-years after video on that rafter tail. I'm looking to do this to about 6 rafter tails on my structure - too cheap to pay hundreds for System3 product.

What type of spray wood treatment is best?

    • @TheRegenerativeHome

I generally don't use spray as it is so easy to inhale. But I would use copper green if I had to

    • @TheRegenerativeHome

Still going strong. It all depends on the quality of the caulking that you use. If you use a high grade polyurethane based caulking that is protected from the Sun it will last longer potentially than the wood around it

    • @gimydaloot

Very good! Have you actually inspected it to see if its holding?
