She said, "Well, according to Paul Simon -- there may be 50 ways to leave your lover. But I guarantee you, there are only 7 ways to get off this plane, so I'd listen up if I were you." :D

Steve Gadd's recollections on how he came up with the drum groove in this song: STEVE GADD: I was practicing between takes. That’s how that started. When I was a kid, I played in drum and bugle corps, and I used to write drum parts. That’s sort of where the inspiration came, subconsciously. So, I was creating different combinations between the hi-hat, snare and bass drum. I was playing the hi-hat with my left hand. Paul and Phil Ramone (producer for the session) heard me, and suggested that I do something like that with the intro. It was really a group effort, a situation where everybody contributed. When you do a session like that, you do whatever makes it work for the artist, and you hope it will be a hit - but you never know. I just try to give the best I can.

Great reaction! The drummer on this song is Steve Gadd and he’s a monster in the studio musicians world. He recorded the drums for the song Aja (Asia) in two takes. It’s almost 7 minutes long and the first half of the song there’s not much happening on the drums but then he starts using his ride and doing these patented single bass triplets that’s insane! Steely Dan uses a lot of world class musicians, Michael MacDonald, Jeff Porcaro, Bernard Purdie, so many others, but they let them do their thing and lay down their tracks so you get the best they have on every track! Once you study Steely Dan you’ll start hearing these musicians in a lot of other songs because you’ll know no one else has a snare that sounds like Steve Gadd’s, or no one else picks a bass like Chuck Rainey, everyone has a style, a sound, and Steely Dan used people who were recorded on thousands of songs!
Paul Simon is an absolutely amazing songwriter. I love all his music & the drum solo in this song. Need to try Me & Julio down by the Schoolyard, Kodachrome, Slip sliding away, Loves me like a rock…
Amazing, iconic song, and a multi-generationally relatable hit. Paul Simon (and Simon & Garfunkel) played and recorded a whole lotta music 60s forward...PS had "Me And Julio Down By the Schoolyard" "Mother And Child Reunion" "Kodachrome" "Slip Slidin' Away" "Late In the Evening" "Loves Me Like a Rock" "You Can Call Me Al" "Diamonds On the Soles Of Her Shoes" (more)...and Art G. recorded a great cover of "I Only Have Eyes For You" in the 80s.
That is the legendary drummer Steve Gadd on the drums in this song. He has played regularly with Paul Simon since 1975, frequently touring with him. I've seen Paul Simon live four times over the years, in one case with Art Garfunkel. Steve Gadd was on drums on two of the occasions when I saw Simon as a solo artist. I've also seen Steve Gadd at least four times playing with James Taylor. One of the most in demand session and touring drummers ever.
I always interpreted this song as the woman giving the narrator hints that SHE was going to leave HIM. That’s why she says “I’d like to help you with your struggle to be free” and “I believe in the morning, you’ll begin to see the light.”
I always interpreted it to be advice from a female friend who wants to be something more. Think she will help him find a few "ways" when they "both sleep om it tonight".
