Costco near me usually has both Wild Planet and Seasons Sardines. Wild Planet is about a $1 less than the Seasons, and have a more prominent taste. I usually clear the guts out of the Wild Planet sardines because that is a major flavor contributor that I don't like. If I am doing an egg scramble, I take the bones out also.
I always enjoyed the Wild Planet sardines and thought they were quite good, until I started trying other sardines available in my local stores. And I realized that I actually liked some of the other brands better. Anyway, it's fun for me to watch you do the taste testing.

The healthy Omega FA's are in the skin. I have been eating the Wild Planet packed in oil and packed in water for years. I can taste the smoke in the oil ones, but not in the water packed ones. I really enjoy the WP sardines, as do my border collies and my cat! But I'm here to find out about other brands. THANKS for these video!

I love sardines, kippered herring, smoked oysters and canned salmon. Probably like tuna least of all, except as a salad spread on toasted bread or on Ritz crackers. My younger brother and I would fight each other, as kids, over the spine bones that Mom would pick out of the canned salmon prior to making croquettes, so I know where you're coming from about the sardine spines. Fortunately for me, I'm the cook in our home and my wife HATES the thought of eating salmon bones, so they're ALL MINE!

Great review! And I LOVE the background music. Perfection. Whenever I have really high quality oil from a can (e.g., organic extra virgin olive oil) it's just too healthy to waste. Try mixing the left over oil with some vinegar (or lemon juice), herbs, salt, and pepper to make a dipping sauce for bread or salad dressing, or it can be used for cooking (e.g., sardine oil flavored scrambled eggs are great). I've eaten a lot of Wild Planet sardines. I like their attention to protecting fish and the environment, but candidly, while they are very good, they are overpriced. You can get better for less. P.S. Winston has great taste in sardines. 😅 🐟

It's been a while since I've eaten Wild Planet sardines but I thought they had an odd taste to them, like plastic or something? I may still have a can or two I was keeping around for "end of the world" meals 😅 Since you and Winston liked them OK maybe I'll give them another go. I bought mine at Costco and if I remember correctly they were less expensive then the Season brand I also buy there.

I think it's time to go on a "sardine and cracker" jaunt . Your demonstration awakened my taste for some fish . 🐟🦭🐠 Just a simple mix of ( my go to sardines ) King Oscar in Extra Virgin Olive Oil Sardines , and Saltines . What threw me off was the contrast between the softness of the sardines , against the crunch of the crackers. A strange combination for me . But, it's easy to handle.

While I love the skin on bone in sardines those seem loosly packed where the other one seemed more full. I eat sardines for protein but I do enjoy the flavor.
Sardines even though canned in oil, theyre no different than fresh fish. If you smell that strong fishy smell, the fish is too old. Think old school canned cat food. Where I live, Gulf of Mexico fresh fish, shrimp and oysters are highly valued. Fresh fish do not smell. They actually have a fresh saltwater aroma. Canned shouldn't have a strong fishy smell. Its one of the reasons I'm a King Oscar snob...lol...good video as usual. Carry on.

Safe Catch being compared to an aquarium isnt too far off, when I got it for cheap it reminded me of that almost fermented tuna taste, lacked the proper saltiness, was very dry. Don't like to waste food so I ended up mixing it into other dishes but not going to be grabbing that again unless I am starving lol
So far on my journey, I’ve not once found myself love-loving any Pacific sardines (Sardinops sagax and Sardinops melanostictus), which are the dealer’s choice Wild Planet packs, as much as the Atlantic cousin (Sardina pilchardus). The Pacific guys are chunkier-those spines are no joke-and their meat a bit less tender, all else being equal.
What kind of stores do you source your sardines from? I have found that most grocery stores i my area (Ontario Canada) have a small selection of the same few brands all the time. I hesitate to order online because they usually are a bulk option, and I would like to know if I like them before I order 10 or 20 cans.
I have had to roll the dice on Amazon many times and that’s part of why I started this channel because I couldn’t find the reviews I wanted before having to buy in bulk. I had good luck at Asian grocery stores and I honestly just check at every store I’m in….but I’d say over half I’ve had to just order.

Sardines are the best type of seafood to eat since these pilchards are caught at a very young age and have not been exposed to the many chemicals in the ocean they swim in. Always look at the country the canned sardines came from- I avoid the ones that are from southeast asian countries due to their canning practices and standards- i prefer sardines that are canned in the USA made by known companies. You can also fry them as well as eating them out of the can....bon appetit !

@@SardineExpedition I bought a real nice air fryer, and then my wife showed me all this information on the dangers of air frying , so I returned the fryer. I just pan fry the sardines, I use the ones that are in spring water as oppose to ones in oils, don't know what type of oil those sardine companies use.
I have eaten about 12 cans of the Wild Planet sardines that I picked up for cheap at Costco but I prefer the cheap grocery store sardines by far. I am not buying anymore Wild Planet even if they were half price of the grocery store cheap sardines. It isn't that Wild Planet is nasty or bad, it just isn't what I am accustomed to.
I agree. I started with smoked sprats and fell in love with those. The wild planet and safe catch seem more for people who want sardine benefits, but want it to taste like tuna.

Howdy from Texas. Other than squeamish people and culinary cowards I see very little use for the existence of skinless and boneless sardines. Because not only do they not really taste of anything, ( good ) . By choosing to eat them you are losing some of the main reasons sardine lovers eat sardines for. The skin of a sardine contains a large amount of the Omega 3 fatty acids, and the bones in the sardines contain all of the calcium. Two of the major health benefits of eating sardines in the first place. I actually bought one can of skinless boneless sardines once by accident and only because it was sandwiched between two cans of the sardines that I thought I was buying three of. And I was absolutely unimpressed. Horrible stuff.
Hey David!! The bones and skin are my absolute favorite!! I understand that a lot of people dip their toe in the sardine world by starting with boneless skinless ones, but yes, missing so many of the health benefits of a whole sardine.

I've tried Wild Planet. They looked nice but tasted average. Not worth the price.

I’ve tried to look that up and couldn’t get info on specific brands. In general, sardines are low on the mercury scale compared to other larger fish.

Fun fact, sardines are packed into the tin as much as possible so less expensive olive oil is needed

Two of the major health benefits of eating sardines in the first place. I actually bought one can of skinless boneless sardines once by accident and only because it was sandwiched between two cans of the sardines that I thought I was buying three of. And I was absolutely unimpressed. Horrible stuff.
Hey David!! The bones and skin are my absolute favorite!! I understand that a lot of people dip their toe in the sardine world by starting with boneless skinless ones, but yes, missing so many of the health benefits of a whole sardine.
Get an Aquarium and grow your own sardines!!! LOL!🤢
