    When I was your age I thought like you. But many decades of driving and multiple ‘first to attend’ at accidents (as ordinary citizen not first responder) has taught me that distance behind car ahead is a saviour. If you want to be part of a seven car pileup then follow and stop close. I hope the years don’t teach you what I have learnt. I hope you just come to that view without the grief. FSD is keeping a good distance.

      very good advice. I might just add 1 little caveat relating to computer vision versus human . fsd should theoretically be able to react many times faster than a human and judge a vehicle in front that is slowing down or breaking instantaneously in comparison. but a human absolutely agree too many people follow too close behind. especially at speed.

    • @tonyfromaus7855
      @tonyfromaus7855 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lachywocky true but two things…. Firstly the actual response time of FSD currently might not be much different to a humans. A lot of processing needs to be done and the videos seem to suggest that it sometimes seems slow to react. Secondly irrespective of reaction time, once you are stopped behind a car the closer you are increases your chances of a rear end crash becoming a three car crash instead of just two. Small comfort perhaps, but easier in insurance terms if nothing else. It’s only after you’ve seen or been in such a situation that you start to consider it at stopping time. Being stopped closer gives no advantage to you but does have a disadvantage.

    I just got 12.3.4 updated at 3am too! I actually got alerted at 11:35pm yesterday. It was a great first day using FSD for the first time ever. There were 2 premature DEs on my part but once it got confused between 2 lanes creeping at a busy light and earned a honk. However, it figured it out on its own after that time without a DE.

    The current version of FSD is impressive and complete autonomous driving appears to be on the horizon. However, after using FSD for a couple of weeks, I've realized I enjoy driving more than monitoring FSD. I've always enjoyed driving cars and motorcycles and babysitting a computer just isn't my idea of fun. I look forward to complete autonomous driving because sleeping at night on a road trip would be great. BTW, I really like the interior on your 2024 Model 3.

    As a NON Tesla owner and just looking at it from the outside, I think this version of FSD is absolutely astonishing. I appreciate that it's still wanting in some areas and based on this video it 100% still requires full supervision ( Traffic cone near miss for example). With all that being said, it is amazing to see how far this tech has come. We are very very close to living in the era of true self-driving cars! I can't imagine it will take much longer before it is bulletproof and far far better than any human at driving (Safely). I do wonder about Tesla's reliance on cameras though. I mean what happens during a snow or sudden dust storm for example? Surely having a secondary system like Lidar and radar to fall back on makes sense?

    Great intro! Few things. The route that is presented for navigation is not tied to FSD. It will give you the same routes with or without FSD. The stopping way short of intersections is something I've experienced as well...always. I just juice the pedal a bit to move the car up. Same with distance between the Tesla and the car in front. This one I can sort of understand. The auto speed us supposed to use the "neural network" to determine usual speeds for the road, and then set for that speed. Personally I think it doesn't work well. I live in a large metro area with plenty of traffic. It always goes too slow for my taste.
    I have also read that the highway driving does not use the 12.x.x stack. I am also hopeful it will improve vastly. It gets REALLY old having the car decelerate quickly for no apparent reason on the highway. Where I live, that can get someone shot. :)
    My hunch is that timing between nags is a sunk effort. I think it looks at speed, road conditions, number of recent inputs to the steering wheel (lane changes, etc.), internal camera capability to see the driver's face, etc. I tried timing it and indeed found it was a noble effort, but one that didn't yield usable data.
    One last thing. Instead of disengaging FSD when you think the car should proceed through an intersection, you can use the accelerator. When I do that, the car goes and then finishes the turn/proceeds through the intersection, etc. You probably knew that but were trying to show the real-life FSD fun.

    • @MetzTech
      @MetzTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I accidentally discovered the accelerator trick later on in the day. It helps bridge the awkward gaps that FSD leaves.
      I completely agree about the highway stack. It randomly slowed down on my last drive on 12.3.3 just in the middle of the open highway. Luckily there was no one behind me 🥴

    • @Mark-kt5mh
      @Mark-kt5mh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is actually incorrect. The navigation routing parameters are slightly different with FSD and has been this way since 2020.

    • @jbhorner
      @jbhorner 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mark-kt5mh I've seen zero differences. If I enter a destination with FSD off the same path is selected as when FSD is on. I regularly toggle between the two because there are times that I do not have the desire to deal with the opportunities that FSD sometimes brings. Though I certainly cannot speak to what Tesla has leveraged for FSD's tie-ins to navigation, I can speak to what it has exhibited during my real-world use. I use navigation to provide an ETA and see if it has alternatives based on traffic--with or without FSD.

      Or just imagine a Tesla blocking an interception, it seams that it does not take the risk and it is fine :

      Finally, when in the future you will be using FSD not to assess it but to read a book while commuting, you will be happy the car not to take risks to save a few minutes.

    Safest drivers on the road are school bus drivers. We are taught to reduce risk. We can’t speed, we have to come to a complete stop etc. why shouldn’t FSD drive like that. Once you can ride on the car without paying attention. These small annoyances won’t even matter. You will be busy doing something else. Do you think the kids in my bus think about how fast I’m driving? They just know they are in safe.

    The way "most people treat" a certain road should of course not be the basis for a large system framework such as FSD. Even the thought scares me. Let it autistically follow the speed limit, always (speed limit, or if the situation calls for it, under). I think that's necessary to scale the system.

    You failed to mention that your shiny new 2024 M3 had deactivated your “Automatic Set Speed Offset” on its own when traveling on the freeway (I-64 I think) and then activated it again once your M3 was back on city street.

    • @MetzTech
      @MetzTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah that’s because it doesn’t use v12 on the highway. So it doesn’t have the auto speed offset on the highway yet

    • @TuneupMagic

      @@MetzTech What OFFICIAL Tesla publications led you to believe that FSD (Supervised) v12.3.4 doesn't apply when operating your M3 on the highway or freeway with FSD (Supervised) being engaged? Tesla officially states "Automatic Set Speed Offset allows Autopilot to drive at the speed that it determines is most natural. This considers factors like road type, traffic flow, environmental conditions, speed limit and the selected Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Profile setting (Chill, Average, or Assertive)."

    • @06boot
      @06boot 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As far as I know there is no statement of Tesla to this topic yet. It’s a rumor beyond FSD users, because a lot of them noticed that there is quite a difference in the behavior of street driving and highway. Highways feel more like a improved v11 than v12 in city streets with its smart decisions.

    • @TuneupMagic
      @TuneupMagic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@06boot Let me clarify.. while my brand new 2024 MYP ran okay on FSD (Beta) v11.4.9, it's now running like a champ on FSD (Supervised) v12.3.3 with Automatic Set Speed Offset always selected!
      Last weekend, with FSD (Supervised) engaged, traveling on Georgia Highway 247 towards I-75 (a freeway), the word "Auto" was clearly displayed just above the MAX indicator the whole time we (car + supervisor) were on Highway 247 -- rotating the right scroll button, same way MetzTech did in his video, to satisfy the FSD-popo had no effect on my MYP's MAX speed. But, just as soon as we (car + supervisor) entered the freeway (i.e. I-75), I was shock to find out my MYP was going faster and faster with each scroll-up of the right scroll button -- the word "Auto" was replaced by an actual number way higher than the post speed limit on that part of the freeway.
      Just thought MetzTech would want to alert potential FSD (Supervised) users to the behavior of Automatic Set Speed Offset he experienced on I-64, since Tesla's official statement regarding Automatic Set Speed Offset (as seen in my post above) makes no reference to the kind of roadway (city streets, highways, or freeways) the car travels.

    You do realize that nags only happen when you're not holding the steering wheel properly. Such a waste of effort and time to constantly spin the scroll wheel. I go 15-20 minutes between nags using very comfortable hand positions on the wheel. Besides with your hands off the wheels you cannot react fast enough if something really bad happens. Not much of an issue now since V12 is remarkably good but really early builds were a bit dangerous.

I slammed on the brakes and a little girl bicycled in front of my car. I got lucky that I was not looking in a mirror or at a storefront at that moment and I was able to react quickly.
