Because you don´t want chain lube on the sides of your chain. The friction your chain has to withstand basically only occures on the chain joints where each chain link is connected with each other. That´s why they showed the 4 lubrication points all at those joints. Lube on the side of your chain will only collect unnecessary dirt which will wear your chain down faster. That´s why you should apply the chain lube only as they showed here as well, on the inside of your chain.

can we use RK chain cleaner to o-ring chain?
What brand of chain lube you used?
Do I need to clean the grease off new RK chain
Only off the outer edges.. But if you do clean the lot off like I did then you have to grease/wax the chain as per this video before you start riding.
