Got burned out from years of 4x a week. I was pretty strong which was cool but it was like work. I've gone back to minimalist programming and dropped a lot of the fluff I would do. I also picked up jujitsu around a year ago and I couldn't be happier. I love rolling but the iron will always be in my blood. Now it's about getting striped up.
One of my favorite times is when I'm doing "nomad" training between actual programs. For a period of weeks or months, I won't have a set program but use principles I've learned to train. I use this time to try different lifts, rep ranges, or any other changes I would like. Sometimes a month or two of something conpletely different and all unprogrammed is really refreshing and lets me learn things to use on my next programmed block.
This video is very relevant for the general population and people usually get overly obsessed over their numbers and they burn out and they still go hard and eventually get hurt. This is a very helpful video
Like to add one: achieve some arbitrary success (PB) or goal you know you can hit. For example: I always think it's really encouraging to set some dumb rep PR on a lift I haven't done in a while. Just the 'OH SHIT I'm getting stronger'-feeling is usually good for another boost of motivation. You're the man Brian! Thanks for everything!
I think I was a dog in a past life because I love eating the same thing every day and I love training every day and it’s been over 10 years and I’m still not bored 😂 Love ya Brian
I recently switched from 90 minute sessions to 30 minutes. I work up to a MAX effort 4-5 rep set and do maybe one or two sets of assistance. Side effect has been a huge increase in my appetite for some reason. Be strong and courageous!
The first time i went to a strongman seminar at Lion's Den and Brian and his crew was there. It was very exciting learning from Olu. That guy is so humble and awesome. FYI cold therapy is the best thing you can do for the recovery of joints and stuff.
What an awesome positive, realistic mindset. I think you have to experience burnout a few times before you get in tune with yourself & see the signs before it becomes an issue.
I got burntout on strongman before I even did my first competition. Currently prepping for a competition and I'm still burnt out. Fired my coach. Changing my approach. Going to attempt one heavy event day every week, then dorian yates bodybuilding split the rest of the week. If I miss a bodybuilding day, no big deal, but it's much harder to miss a strength focused event day. When every day is relatively heavy and strength focused, I find it very easy to find myself skipping days due to burn out. I figure this way I can still prep for this comp, while focusing more so on my health and re-developing healthy gym and diet habits.
Man...this is a video that I need back in 2021. I got a burn out and fell off my training during my last year of college. I was getting into a new relationship, writing my thesis, and trying to find a job before I graduate. All of that going on at the same time got me pretty stressed out, and I would feel dread everytime I have a bar on my back for squat. So I just quit. Hoping that I would gain my passion in training again after I graduate. And I did. I started training again in late December 2021 after seeing how bad I look and realizing how terrible my health condition was. I remember it was one of your video that got me to say "F it, let's do this," and start lifting again. Thank you.
Brian, really really sound advice. Changing things up is a big thing that folks often do overlook this as a lifting strategy!! I am just a regular Joe gym rat, but I worked out as a powerlifter for 2 years and worked to a 1RM Day. My numbers were still rather weak, but I am naturally a weaker person, a Nerd, with glasses & a good student - people Brian probably beat up in school (hahaha just kidding) but it was amazing going to and competing vs myself to see what I could do...I am natural, and started at age 38 from a really weak base - coming out of losing my wife to cancer, and then losing our home in Hurricane Andrew, and then taking up drinking for 4 years....I wanted to change my life, improve myself to start dating again. I almost married so it did work, but now getting gains is a memory due to rheumatoid arthritis & grip strength is not always good, but I didn't stop working.
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial no sir, never the way its changed my life being happier & healthier ! God bless you dude & haveva great rest of your week, thank you!!!
thank you Brian, this helps to see the other side of the coin... we can find tons of vid for motivation and hyping people, but nobody is speaking about this subject!
I usually train on my own during the season but what I find fun is for a few weeks during pre-season training is to go and train with the guys at the rugby club. Doing all the 'bro-science' stuff, going to stupid failure and forced reps. It's good fun and a nice change but that makes me prepared to get back to the 'serious' stuff.
I did your 4horsemen program, changed the conditioning or strenght work Time to time. Mixed IT up with Crossfit and weightlifting movements. I try to not stress much about it.
I have found this but have found that changing over to strongman 2 times a week has really made me look forward to these sessions. Doing powerlifting everyday gets boring to me after months of just 3-4 lifts
Very encouraging video, thank you for sharing man. I've been dreading even setting up my rack and bar because of recalling how brutal the training used to be. I will be applying many of these tips.
I've been doing Stronglifts 5x5 with the occasional de-load every once in a while, throw in a bit of assistance work, and it got boring! Will be doing Wave 1 Week 2, Day 3 of the Four Horsemen programme tomorrow, and I can't wait to test out!
After 10 yrs of working out, running, fell in love with lifting, did a bikini show, had covid and a bunch of injuries last year, a stomach infection and finally recovering, it’s been a month that I’ve been dreading ALL of my workouts .., im in desperate need of help
I like to keep it easy to start….if I gotta drive to workout or wear special attire than it’s easy to dislike the grind….I can usually muster 30 minutes doing anything that sucks but the impulse to do it wears fast
Hey home boy. Are you still dealing with puking? I think I got the answer to the problem. (L glutamine ) is supposed to help with exercise nausea. Hope this helps.
My man, I appreciate the response, but my problems are much deeper than that. I have the second worst parasite behind malaria in the effects can last a lifetime. Like I said, I appreciate it, but glutamine isn’t gonna do much for me sadly
@Brian Alsruhe OK (NATURES ANSWER) makes a non alcoholic parasite cleanse with black walnut and wormwood. Also if you have any Asian herbalists in your area you may wanna set up an appointment with them. When I was a kid I had pin worms really bad. ( my butt constantly itched PE) after a week on these herbal pills they all died off and I've been free ever since. What kinda parasite are you dealing with if you don't mind me asking, There's a solution to every problem out there?
_if ur looking to get into shape, u can't workout more than 3 days per week. Only 50 minutes max, always to failure and no cards at night. Lifting heavy can ruin ur posture_

Haha Some people can pull it off! I did much of the same thing for the better part of 20 years before I switched to strongman
You are right. Balance between consistency and cleverness is vital on the long term. I almost killed myself doing the same stuff again and again.
Sometimes it is smart to change things up

I had this 100% in the gym. Now I train with a pair of rings and a weight vest outside and its just amazing.
