- After showing many concepts @MercedesBenz Maybach premieres a convertible: The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series. Just before the R232 @Mercedes-AMG SL based Maybach SL 680 premiered at @PebbleBeachConcoursBeach 2024, MotoMan shot a tech review on the differences between the Mercedes AMG SL 63 and the Mercedes Maybach SL 680 - some far deeper than expected.

They're wrong for calling this a 680 without the V12 and Maybach has made convertibles before. The S Class Cabrio had a Maybach version.
I agree. They should have called it the SL500 instead. Or 560 even.
Usually the car number was designated by the engine size , like the 770 which had a 7.665L engine ine

What we have here is an identity crisis. Maybach is simply a trim level now that the company is gone. So why do they have both logos all over this car? And that hood… some designer copied Louis Vuitton and they let them get away with it, and it looks ridiculous.

@@trevonduncombe5866 Maybach is NOT its own brand. That stopped ages ago. It is simply a trim level now, and one that should have been buried 10 years ago. If Mercedes can’t sell itself as the pinnacle of luxury with the 3 pointed star they have failed big time.

That hood is hideous. But I suppose I shouldn't be surprised as I haven't liked the styling of any Maybach. They always take a decent looking Mercedes and make it look tacky.
It reminds me of the cars I've seen with Louis Vuitton logo wrap jobs. I can't imagine anyone actually choosing that hood.

Why does MB not realize badge “engineering” doesn’t work. Slapping a Maybach label on an SL and adding some unique trim bits should not make it a Maybach.
From a luxurious Maybach S coupe (likely one of the most elegant cars of this century) to this little SL? Honestly, it looks like it was wrapped with a foil from Temu.
"Real Gauges" YES PLEASE!!!... I actually think we are approaching a time when those will cost extra, the same way displays started out with some manufacturers.
At least in this SL, they covered the instrument cluster, and it isn't just tacked on like the S-Class.
For once, a production ready car that should remain as a concept.

A Maybach Mercedes is supposed to have a longer wheelbase, that's why it makes sense on the S-Class, not so much on a two-door SL. Also a 680 Mercedes SHOULD HAVE A V12.
This car screams "new money" much rather have a standard SL63
SL 63 AMG is a better looking car in my opinion. I certainly don't like the monogram all over the hood or even a black hood. Yes it's just a rebadged SL. Yeah bring back the S65.

you can just option out the Maybach logos. It’s new money or old money depending on the owner who options it. It’s a business decision, it’s better to appeal to both new and old money than just old money. It’s like LV, you have logo bags and more expensive plain bags.

when somebody shows up in this car, to a party you’re attending, you’d probably feel good about it. The car doesn’t need to be beautiful or well made, it just needs to be expensive and flashy.

It's not just rappers, the design changes are supposed to attract style....the color pallet i get.
The monochrome paint style is normal, this is unique.
For the same amount of money, I’d search high and low for an R129 SL70 AMG and revel in the best-looking V12 Benz convertible ever made. But that’s just me. I’m sure that in a few months, a Chinese company will release a body kit and interior accessories to make your base-model SL look just like this one. It happened with the GLS400d in the Indian subcontinent and will likely happen again. It’s a trend that reflects the current Maybach ethos: an obsession with looking as ostentatious as possible
The fellow rappers you're trying to impress would see that SL70 as a crappy old car. That's why you need this car with the Maybach LV hood to impress them!
The price difference is not that much. Not worth it. If you can afford a V8 SL you can afford this. Its nothing special.

2017 Maybach S 650 Cabriolet, and yes it had the 6L AMG V12. I think it was limited to 500 units.
I congratulate Maybach on their ability to sell tacky cars for ludicrous prices to people with no taste. I also thank the buyers for subsidizing the price of proper cars.

If they do a black hood then be ingenious and do it in carbon fiber with rose gold logos; get rid of the hood ornament or put one with the Maybach logo.

Even with all of that it would still be a flop. The legendary SL can only be a Mercedes and not just decide to put lipstick on an SL .
Maybach already has made a convertible ...S650 from 2018 the black hood is HIDEOUS

yes, and other than some badge engineering it was not at all different from my AMG S63Cabrio.
It’s lovely but I would get another colour that looks more understated. The current configuration is a bit too flashy for me but it’s gorgeous. Also the myriad of Maybach logos on the bonnet have to go.

Well, how nice would a dark blue with a saddle interior and a blue or silver hood look! Just do not like the stamping on the hood or the all-WHITE interior but then again, I am not the market for this car!! Great review and yes, a 12 cylinder would be better!
They did with the Ocean Drive concept and delivered with the C217 S600 Maybach convertible years ago.

I ask for the gauges in EVERY Maybach episode . . . Why? Because they already did it! Through their 'Manufaktur' program a customer paid what I could only imagine was a King's ransom for real gauges. So, it can be done . . . And I feel would go a VERY long way differentiate a Maybach from a standard, serial production Mercedes. I would go so far as to saying this: Have a look through the comments - and I even said it on camera, this flavor of SL ain't for everyone, but if they did the gauges - it would transform the interior and it the car, would be a sales success.

That baby has bling but in subtle places. Ok granted the grill and A pillar not so subtle, but the chin and profile work: quite a strong elegant vibe. My only chance is to catch a falling star in four years off lease or the lottery. There’s always that for some but🚫not for me. 13:32
