    Sometimes you need a murdery looking knife. Sometimes you have to play the Bond villain.
    Sometimes you have to test the cocaine by stabbing the brick with a double edged out the front auto dagger and doing a key hit.

    This has been a grail knife since I first learned about it. Sure, I can get custom folders with stupidly expensive materials or a cool design, but the Deadlock is a unique knife in that there's nothing like it. It's not just unique in the aesthetics, but in the way the knife works and functions. It'd be the only OTF automatic I'd have in the collection, since every other OTF has some degree of blade play and I know that would not sit with me. It's also unattainable, not only in price but in availability. It's just overall a true grail knife, at least in my mind. This video was a joy to watch for that reason; I stopped using my phone and booted up my desktop because I had to see this knife on video in full screen mode lol.

    If you intend to defend your patent against infringement you need to put it where it is easily visible. And this is a patent worth defending. Hiding it on the inside defeats the purpose of getting the patent.

    Obviously hard to get and expensive are relative, I’ve had 2 deadlocks in 2018, ordered and delivered from Gavin..there are plenty of other makers that if I want one I’m looking at YEARS on a waiting list, I love that G&G do batches the average person can get on the books for. As far as price, I get it 1k is a lot for a single knife.. especially when your buying multiple $1-$300/knives per month, quit buying the cheaper production knives, save up for a couple of months, there’s your deadlock.. easy.. to steal your line... “it’s a beautiful thing”

    Waiting on my Deadlock 2019. Seems to me the advantage of an OTF is not one-hand operation which most modern manual folding knives offer, but rather the ease, speed and convenience an auto provides. Been carrying the Protech SBR and it's hard to stop EDCing it because of the quickness and alacrity it gives you. Granted it doesn't retract by button, but to be able to pull & deploy so easily can become desirable.

    As you’d say, as a man with only one functional arm, an auto would be great. I had one many years ago, but they are so much frowned upon here in the UK I’d be looking at a 4 year stretch! Plus, as an elected politician, I be sure to get the book thrown at me. I would love a Ca legal sub 2” auto, but I can’t. This really annoys me. My BM 940 makes up in a way, but it’s still illegal to carry most of the time. There is no legal right to carry here, so even if I ‘need’ to have an easy opening knife, simply to have a knife; I still need to ‘prove’ that I have ‘need’ (not a want) to carry a knife at all. The sub 3” slip-joint exception, does not confer any ‘need’ to carry a knife, it merely concedes that one ‘may’ carry a sub 3” slip-joint.... if I really must!

  • @Lack_of_response
    @Lack_of_response 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    for me, the side release is more comfortable to launch/retract the blade than top release and still ends in a very practical grip. this is based on a smaller OTF, the Darriel Caston Zulu, a great little clipless gentleman's OTF.

  • @arcadely
    @arcadely 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You're not kidding about illegal: in the UK it's illegal to even *buy* that thing, let alone *carry* it. I think if you already owned it and had it in your house (somehow) that would probably be OK (although it's very much in the class of banned knives so don't quote me on that) but you'd get into trouble for importing it in the first place. For this reason I've never shown much interest in automatics, because there's just no point. Still, I have to say, if it were possible for me to own an automatic knife and I had a massive pile of cash to spend on one, it would definitely be this one. Really impressive piece of work. Thanks for taking the time to review it.

    • @MJFallout
      @MJFallout 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible. You'd need to get an auto that could be delivered to you in at least 2 portions (neither of which would be illegal to own on its own). There are companies (for example in the US) that provide this service.
      There are also autos that seem very much designed to facilitate this approach. Mikov (from the Czech Republic) comes to mind; their knives can easily be shipped without the springs, and the springs are trivially easily inserted by the consumer later and at home.
      And more to the point: Lots of different autos can be bought as kits, to assemble at home, and with the blade sent at a slightly later date.
      You know, not saying you should do that, just pointing out what's possible.

    A Top button, single edge Deadlock would be a dream come true. The button location does help with smoothness of action. A Midtech run would also be awsom to allow us plebs to get a Solid OTF we can use. At one $1000 it isn't a user.

    I work on a farm and encounter many one free handed situations. Between the double action OTF and a auto side opening knife I prefer the OTF. I own each and as far as a useful tool the OTF wins. While side opening knives open with one hand, closing is a two handed affair. Not so with a OTF double action. To bad our archaic knife laws prevent legal carry of autos.

    I need to preface this by saying I understand why people like autos & otf knives and I do still appreciate seeing a well executed design even if it isn't to my tastes. However, I find the overwhelming majority of autos to be unsatisfying for one reason or other. One of the few exceptions is the Deadlock. It's strange how it ticks so many different boxes that I really appreciate. The Hawks should talk to Demko and make the most awesome lock in the history of this or any other universe.

    I can’t afford a Deadlock, but I prefer the release button where the Hawks put it. The top position feels flimsy to me and vulnerable to damage. “Murdery” strikes me as a ridiculous term. It’s designed to be a novelty. No one would carry a $2000 knife into combat or risk its seizure by the police. Nick’s Delica can cut a throat just as easily as a Deadlock.

    I love nick, always have, but to make a production version of the deadlock would completely defeat the purpose of the deadlock. It would lose all specialness. Although I agree that I would like all knife lovers to be able to experience this greatness, don’t you think that sales of the custom version would plummet if they were everywhere in the production model? I’d bet my 401k that they have been approached more than once about making a production version form several production knife company’s. Why the hesitation? Everything I just explained above. Nick, this was a great video and keep up the good work, you’re the reason I got into high end knives so I owe you. Take care and God bless.

    The blade going off track is not a safety feature, not sure why I hear this in so many videos. It is common sense, if the spring had enough force to lock in the open position while going through cardboard or clothing, you would not be strong enough to actuate the slide. You also cannot say a safety feature is safe, when once deployed can stick you a 1/4 inch deep before it does stop.

    Nick I love your reviews but you need to get calipers bc you mentioned the hawk MUDD was a little thick behind the edge but in fact on another channel it was measured the same as the PM2. So I think calipers would be something that would improve your reviews.

      Ryan M I don’t think it would matter.. he said 3.5” is HUGE here and is just a tad longer than he likes in other videos.. 🤷‍♂️

    It's not a safety thing that it stops when it runs into something. Its physics. At rest the spring is neutral with no force on it. You preload the spring with your thumb, blade is released and tossed to the other end where it clicks past the latch that locks it. Same thing happens in reverse. The spring only acts in preload, while the rest of the travel is just the blade sliding through the handle with momentum. It is physically impossible to make a double action OTF without this happening, so can we go ahead and stop calling it a safety feature? The only company to outwardly sell it as such is ravencrest which is a company that just buys chinese ones and pretends they made them... not exactly experts on the subject.

      Exactly - that's the difference between single and double action OTFs.
      Could be easily seen with a clear top one.

      That's cool to know how that actually works but at the same time can that not also just be an added benefit of a double action OTF... that is isn't going to accidentally stab you or something/one else?

    • @IlliniDog01
      @IlliniDog01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Whether it was specifically designed to be a safety feature or not, it is absolutely far safer than a single action OTF and therefore should be mentioned as such.

    Move to a free state like Arizona and you can buy double action autos at your local smoke shop. And carry them legally.

      Get it sent to a knife friend in the states, have them disassemble it, then send it to you part by part by part through the post then reassemble it in Australia when you receive all the parts. Problem solved!

    I still don't get the whole legal issue with auto openers. I and many knife users can open a manual folder as quickly as an auto. Fixed blades are legal in most states and the blade is already out. Stupid.

    You do realize almost every one of your bad points are by your choice, except price right? 1. You can order single edge just as easy as double edge, you pull a knife out of your pocket holding it to edge fire? REALY? When I pull my deadlock out of my pocket my thumb is right below the fire button ( I think if you test it you’ll see yours is too, if not it very easily could be) negating your issue with having to reposition in your hand.
