      The entire time I was expecting some sort of epic rug pull at the end. Like it turned out the Leader & Press had made the story up entirely, or the original identifiers of the Cobras were overzealous and they weren't actually Cobras or something.
      That it turned out to be a genuine thing was, in it's own way, a greater subversion than the rug pull I anticipated.

      i personally disagree
      the conditions may have been poor, but for the time that was standard; still not why i disagree though
      its likely the penguin recently died due to the stress of the entire situation on Mowrer, i mean, if the entire town is yelling at you to get the fuck out, your constantly recieving death threats, your having to move your ENTIRE stock of probably atleast 50 animals offsite to a new location (AND THAT STILL ISNT GOOD ENOUGH) despite you not having done anything, that probably takes a toll enough to neglect feeding one of the many many animals he had on sight, its sad but its likely that this contributed significantly to the death of the penguin. And, side note, while the police investigated his store he was out of town at a carnival, so the penguin could have died during his visit away.

I think Australia is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Even going for a swim can get you killed if not eaten! I prefer dealing with the copperheads in Virginia -- at least I've never heard of a fatal copperhead bite. Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes are a lot more dangerous than copperheads, but much more rare, since I've never seen one outside a zoo. I've only seen a couple cottonmouths/water moccasins and always in water -- in the Potomac River near Washington, D.C. and in a swamp in a park near Alexandria. The venomous snakes in Virginia are a lot less dangerous than those in Australia. I don't live in the Florida Everglades, so I don't have to worry about alligators, crocodiles or more dangerous snakes. At least you Aussies don't have to deal with black mambas, since they're in Africa.

    they wanted a cheap way to get rid of the problem, so rather than put shade roofs over the tables they went with the suggestion of putting rubber snakes in the trees to scare the birds away. It was great when the next day after the snakes were put there, we had visitors from Japan. The look of amazement of the sheer stupidity of the whole thing was priceless. I was in tears explaining the reason for the snakes while they looked at me with disdain for treating my bosses so shamefully, yet they too couldn't hold back the smiles.

I remember once being threatened by a Coppermouth crossing a river as we were canoeing past. It was all of about 5 seconds we were facing each other and I spent the whole time ready to swat the thing with my oar if it got adventurous. We had every kind of animal in my house including my mother taking in hurt sparrows and fixing their wings until they could fly again, skinny, dirty cats that were close to death, etc. All in all we had (in our tiny, poor neighborhood apartment that had two bedrooms with 7 people, parents and 5 sons) birds, cats, dogs, lizards, snakes, guinea pigs, ferrets, and yes a fucking monkey. Only the dog and maybe 1 cat was a pet where as the others were animals we found hurt and nurtured back to health. Even poor in a shitty city neighborhood i got to experience my own jungle and i think it also taught me to be more sympathetic to not just random creatures but people also. I wish this country would get back to caring about one another instead of spewing venom online. Ill say it but most won't dare, i dont care who you voted for, i dont care about the color of your skin, i dont care if you're religious or not, i dont care if you screwed up in the past, i only care about your character. If i feel i can trust you around my child then thats all that counts. When i become a friend with someone then i would take a bullet for you if need be and thats the kind of respect i hope you have for others you care about. Super likely he overstocked his fish and the thing died just because of that, but selling exotic stock in the "typical plastic bag" is incomprehensible to me at its face. The guy was obviously inexperienced in way too many things, but the difficulty of keeping most fish labeled "exotic" especially in the 50s had to have been stupid hard and he would have known the fish to die when handing it over to the kid.

Maybe like 300 snakes, and maybe have a fight scene in a school where a band of misfit kids fights off the horde to save all the younger kids + add a fainted teacher for comedic effect. Also add a bad cop with a heart of gold who rushes in and makes a makeshift flamethrower to kill all the snakes as his act of redemption. Plus have him bite by one, but the female love interest who is also a doctor who doesn't play by men's rules rushes in with the antivenom to save him.

I remember the boa because I saw it stretched out on the ground as he photographed it. But my strongest memory is of the monkey incident. My little sister and I were both with Daddy when he went to cover the capture. The monkey was in a garage up in the rafters and the men were having no luck getting their hands on it. So someone came up with the brilliant idea of sticking my sister up there so the monkey would come to her. I well remember the screaming fit she had over that idea. I sure laughed all during the video, well told, thanks.

I understand that they are dangerous but being around the presence of people clearly stressed them out causing them to show signs of aggression like that. Instead of shooting the snakes the police could have easily relocated them. But I suppose it was earlier times then, animal safety wasn’t exactly cared for then. I mean hell, the dude was housing monkeys and penguins in awful environments, and those are warm blooded creatures, the poor reptiles and amphibians probably had terrible vitamin deficiencies. God it is just terrible to think about. With that aside; Austin, this was an extremely interesting video. You should hear about the Death Tunnel in Ohio, or that time the Ohio River spontaneously burst into flames, or that time a ship snapped entirely in half off the north coast of Ohio....
      Every state has some crazy stories if you lift up the lid. A man I knew once told me about the myth of "Warlock's Grave", an obsidian tombstone in a graveyard some distance from here, reputed to be where a witch was buried blah blah blah black magic.
      He dug into the history of the graveyard and found out that the man with the obsidian tombstone was the donor for the church's construction! Wasn't a wizard, just stylish.

    this is still totally the shop keepers fault IMO. maybe at the time there just weren't yet laws against selling such highly venomous snakes (and other exotic animals like monkeys and penguins that are immoral to have as pets) but I'm sure he knew how risky it was to sell them to just regular people in town who could set them loose or have them escape. just because he himself didn't let the snakes loose doesn't make it not his fault, if you were to set loose all the animals in a regular pet shop today it wouldn't create this sort of public hazard because they don't sell such dangerous animals. the fact that people lose their pets or let them loose when they want to get rid of them all the time makes it obviously dangerous to sell them deadly snakes lol

    • @66alsmith
      @66alsmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A cobra got loose in Moody, Alabama a few years ago. You’d be amazed at how many deadly animals are owned by any average idiot in this country. Look at the python problem in Florida for example

    • @BlisaBLisa
      @BlisaBLisa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@66alsmith pythons arent deadly animals to humans though, they arent venomous and they're kept harmlessly as pets a lot. pets being loose can still cause problems to the environment though by being an invasive species (I know this happened with giant African land snails in Florida) but that doesn't create such an immediate threat to humans in the area like cobras do, especially when cobras not living in that area means antivenom for them isn't available to the people who could get bitten, like it may be if they get bitten somewhere the cobras are native. so I don't think its wrong to sell people cats, for example, who do a LOT of damage to the environment when let loose or allowed to be outdoor cats, bc they arent a safety hazard for humans

    • @alexarias5717
      @alexarias5717 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very accurate. There's a similar problem in Florida with pet pythons and boa constrictors ending up loose.

    • @alexarias5717
      @alexarias5717 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BlisaBLisa I know why you prioritize one over the other because of the direct threat to humans. But honestly, funny how many more animals died in this event than humans. Every single cobra was caught or killed without biting anyone. The toddler was bit by a harmless snake. Me personally, I prioritize both situations because they are both the same to me.

    • @BlisaBLisa
      @BlisaBLisa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alexarias5717 im kinda confused by what you mean by "both situations" you mean both this cobra situation and the pythons in Florida situation? they are really not the same... I don't know much about the problem with pythons and boas in Florida but I know this sort of thing happens in all sorts of places, where the ecosystem of a place is damaged by loose pets that become an invasive species, Florida is nice and warm so I can see this making the snake problem worse when not only is it a good climate for them but there isnt really a cold season that would kill them off (this is whats been happening there with the giant African land snails) it poses a direct threat to animals/the ecosystem and a somewhat indirect threat to humans who could be affected by the damage, but with cobras it not only poses that same threat to the ecosystem/animals from being an invasive species, it also poses a direct threat to humans if the population gets out of control. the hysteria around the few cobras here was for sure overblown but honestly its better the snakes were all caught or killed before they had a chance to become a real problem. the actual damage done I'm sure is much smaller than the Florida situation but the potential damage seems much bigger imo
