- I live on the east coast of Canada in the Province of Nova Scotia. Been rehabbing raccoons for 20 years now these ones in the video were originally oprhaned. I have a river an brook on my property and also give them two buckets of well water. No rabies here because of the climate but they do suffer from time to time of Feline Distemper. They are treated for disease, ticks, fleas and worms. The live in the woods full time and come by once a day for feeding and also eat in the woods. Then after winter I get a new family after the other see out new digs to raise a family and come by once in awhile for a visit. I live in a forested area few neighbors and they don't bother anyone else. This was my wife's project and she died in 2003 of Cancer and begged me on her death bed to take care of her raccoons and cats and her mother. I honored her wishes and took care of the cats and her mother for the next ten years. I have two rescue cats that live here Connor and Charlotte but they stay in doors. Special Note: thank you for the kind offers of money and Gifts but I cannot accept I would rather you donate to your local SPCA or Animal Welfare locations in your area.

Not a scrap left! Astonishing how polite they are with each other with no food fights. I think they know there is plenty for all. What an incredibly sweet thing to do for the raccoons!! You are my hero. Thank you for explaining the background as its in context and you know what you are doing. The raccoons look well fed, emotionally calm, and very healthy!
Great job on deworming and flea meds! Not sure how you accomplish this for each one. Also curious if you give them cat or dog meds? Drontal Plus is for dogs only, and Droncit for Felines.
Drontal Plus has 3 meds: Praziquantel (tapeworms), Pyrantel Pamoate (Roundworms), Febantel (Hookworms, Whipworms).
Droncit has only 1 med: Praziquantel (tapeworms).
Since Raccoons also eat snails, they are prone to Lungworm, and the treatment is Febandozole. Lungworm is passed through snails to rats and mice, and so eating any of these animals will infect the larger animal.
I do animal rescue, so researched all this online. Not in the medical field. Note that if you have domestic pets and if they have coughing fits, it may be lungworm from the snails or raccoons.

Drontal can be used for cats with tapeworm. Thanks for the lungworm info. I rescue in NYC as well as overseas and I never really heard of it.
@@unabashed Drontal and Droncit are the same medication Praziquantel, but may be in different dosage amounts for cat and dog size and metabolism.
Droncit is for tapeworm only in either tablet or inj form. Drontal plus is for both cats and dogs but come in different bottles labeling feline or canine( and they have small or large canine drontal plus) difference of feline canine small and large is the mg of all the meds in the tablets. Dosage goes by body weight . Im a vet tech. We see a lot of raccoons foxes etc. Hope this answers any questions!

I love it.they seem to have feeding time down.i don't know what it is about peanut butter that they just love.here in Oregon we have a mama and babies.i have left out high quality bison dog food for a dog I've been trying to catch.i always would put out the food and fresh water only to find it was a mama raccoon.for a treat on a plate I made a peanut butter sandwich,put carrots,and a peanut butter cookie out.she ate it all and just loved it.our home was the only home she would make herself known and felt comfortable enough to let me see her and her two babies.
One night I was a little late getting the food put out in her feeding spot and she peered in the window,saw me,and started squeeking.she took the empty bowl and tapped the window with it.i hurried up and got her food to her.i love raccoons and all wildlife and they know when you are being kind to them and helping them.thats what this world needs is to love,respect,and help all wildlife.i think what you are doing is fantastic.

It's highly quality fat for them - they love and need higher fat/protein foods to bulk up for extended periods in winter with no feeds.

One night my dad came over and while he was waiting for me to open the door, he decided to reach down and pet the cats that were eating on the porch. He let out a holler and jumped back just as I opened the door, he said didn't notice until after he pet it that one of those cats had a rat tail, then it turned around and grinned at him...it was a huge possum! LOL I asked him how it felt and he said soft and a little oily...he ran right in and washed his hands LOL.

When I was camping, as a kid, many years ago - the raccoons in the campground were accustomed to people, and right after dusk, they'd show up at the edges of the campsites, clearly waiting for handouts. So we'd go and sit there, and let them approach, and we'd feed them Ritz crackers and stuff. I was always amazed at how mannerly they were. They'd sort of line up, very gently take a cracker, turn and walk away, and the next one, would come up, and kind of go, "I'd like a cracker, please" LOL, and so on ..... I know they can be ferocious, and not good pets ... but this was a very sweet side of them too; that I enjoyed feeding them..
apparently .. it's not the pets we need to worry about; like with all animals, it's the owners. I'm so pleased you shared your memory of the 'waiting in line' racoons. Thanks for sharing

I feed around 7 a night. They eat froot loops, cheap sandwich cookies and dog and cat food. They get scraps occasionally. Mine aren't very scared of me but nowhere near as friendly as yours. I try to make sure they eat well so they don't bother our chickens. 2 years ago we lost 12 chickens in about a month and now they don't even go around them. Love my little fellas!!
