Oddly enough The first time Supergirl went by the last name "Danvers" was in 1961 as Linda Lee Danvers. However, Captain Marvel was created as Carol Danvers in 1968, so it is highly possible Marvel copied off DC, given that the character really is just a female version of Captain America.
This show spends an ungodly large amount of time on these romances that go nowhere. Kara and James were built up for an entire season and just ditched it the next season. Alex and Maggie was overrated and went nowhere. And Winn and Lyra aren’t even brought up after season 2, they were still together in the season finale. If you’re going to focus on the relationships so much make them good.
Thank you! They put so much work in these relationships that could be great but instead they run them to the ground while bad, unhealthy relationships like Kara and Mon El get all the TV time. This show is the worst representation of relationships there is.
The reason there are so many “relationships” in this show is because it’s main audience is teenagers under the age of around 17 (mostly girls). Plus it’s a CBS networked show so, they relatively have A LOT of romance included. Although I do agree James and Kara’s relationship kind of faded, they didn’t necessarily “ditch” it. They built it up to get more audiences and they faded it so that they could focus on putting a new love interest for Kara in the second season, Mon-el. As for Alex and Maggie, I thought it was important for the network and the dctv to have a gay couple. To show that to these specific people who watch the show, young teenagers who’ll shape the next generation, and for them to truly understand that it’s okay to be like Alex and be scared to understand who she is and who she’s attracted to. Unfortunately, Floria, I believe the actress who plays Maggie’s name is, had to leave the show but it didn’t go “nowhere”. Alex ended up understanding who she was and actually being in love and care about another person in a way she’s never cared. They got engaged but they obviously wanted different things, Alex wanting a kid, Maggie, not. Showing that people who are in love may still struggle to agree with each other and even though they love each other they had to let go is a very important lesson. Winn and Lyra, I’m pretty sure, was supposed to be a smaller arc compared to Alex and Maggie or Kara and Mon-el. I’m pretty sure they’re still together but in this season, season 3, the show is focusing less on the romance of any of the characters and focusing on who Supergirl is and what she’ll do to save everyone she cares about and loves.
Also, Kara and Mon-el’s relationship is not “toxic” or “unhealthy”. When Mon-el first arrives on Earth, he’s a spoiled prince from Daxam, a planet coincidently next to Krypton where Kara is from. He doesn’t want to work, he doesn’t want to train. But on episode 8 of season 2, Mon-el agrees to train with her to make food use of his powers. That’s when everything changed. Gradually but definitely. He becomes more mature and less spoiled and learns so much about humanity and how to be a hero and actually love from Kara. She changes him to become this amazing guy. He’s no longer the guy he was. In episode 16, Kara finds out that Mon-el was the prince. And when he finally admits it, he saids that he’s not who he was now and he confronts his parents saying that he’s no longer the prince of Daxam. I don’t think that the old him, the spoiled him, would’ve even had the guts to do that. Kara, on the other hand, didn’t so much as learn goodness from Mon-el as have an experience. She was in this place where she didn’t know whether she could be supergirl and Kara Danvers at the same time and being with Mon-el, she felt like she could be both. She could do anything and everything. From a reporter, to superhero, to lover. Mon-el made her happy and that meant the world to her. At the last episode of the season, you could tell that both Kara and Mon-el loved each other so much. So to conclude, to label this relationship “unhealthy” would be a very incorrect point.
mel it’s not that there are romances on the show that bothers me as much as they waste a lot of potential. Kara and James romance ended with Kara basically saying let’s be friends and it’s never addressed again. Alex and Maggie’s breakup did serve a purpose in her story arc but more could have been shown later in season 3 to continue this arc. I agree with you on Mon-el, I didn’t really have any strong opinions on the romance with Kara but it never seemed toxic. Again romances aren’t the problem, it’s that other shows do similar ones way better. Agents of shield, Gotham, Krypton and Runaways all have romances but they feel more genuine and have a more useful reason to exist. Ultimately if you enjoy them more power to you but for me I think the show needs to aspire to make the romances better.

I don’t think that the old him, the spoiled him, would’ve even had the guts to do that. Kara, on the other hand, didn’t so much as learn goodness from Mon-el as have an experience. She was in this place where she didn’t know whether she could be supergirl and Kara Danvers at the same time and being with Mon-el, she felt like she could be both. She could do anything and everything. From a reporter, to superhero, to lover. Mon-el made her happy and that meant the world to her. At the last episode of the season, you could tell that both Kara and Mon-el loved each other so much. So to conclude, to label this relationship “unhealthy” would be a very incorrect point.
mel it’s not that there are romances on the show that bothers me as much as they waste a lot of potential. Kara and James romance ended with Kara basically saying let’s be friends and it’s never addressed again. Alex and Maggie’s breakup did serve a purpose in her story arc but more could have been shown later in season 3 to continue this arc. I agree with you on Mon-el, I didn’t really have any strong opinions on the romance with Kara but it never seemed toxic. Again romances aren’t the problem, it’s that other shows do similar ones way better. Agents of shield, Gotham, Krypton and Runaways all have romances but they feel more genuine and have a more useful reason to exist. Ultimately if you enjoy them more power to you but for me I think the show needs to aspire to make the romances better.
