I did once come across an upright with a shifting una corda pedal, so they exist.

David Arditti Yes they do and there are also upright pianos with a 'proper' sostenuto middle pedal too.

Mine is Petrof with 3 pedals. I have owned it for more than 2 decades.
The middle pedal is a practice pedal, I guess, cos it will make the piano sounds softer drastically.
And the left pedal has no different when I press it.
When I was kid, I thought it was just me who hadn't learned / been taught about the left pedal.
Til I'm adult, I figured out about Sostenuto Pedal. After I revealed that knowledge, the left pedal was still not working. I thought it's broken because it had never been used for so so long.
Now maybe I realize, it is not broken. It is just because the left is the dummy pedal. Am I now correct? Hmm...🤔
Anyway, Thank you for all your videos. So helpful. 👍👍

Short answer: Yes, especially if your intent is on practicing complex modern music.

Unless you don't care about the clarity of the harmonic progressions over a sustained chord, using the sostenuto pedal for modern music is an imperative for that which, at least, implicitly demands it.

toothless toe He just said it wasn't necessary. And you say it's an imperative. Even most digital pianos also just has the damper pedal.

I have a 1958 German Steinmeg and it only has two petals. I was wondering what the shifting one was for... Thanks

Hmm what about digital piano's? Some of those have 1 or 3 pedals. Is it of any value to have more than 1 pedal for those? (I can imagine, since they are digital, they may work better than normal upright piano pedals.)
