I went to my mates house, somewhere in the late 80's and he had been allowed to get an Amiga (in addition to the BBC Micros his parents insisted he had) and seeing Starglider 2 for the first time...
For me, it was a vision of beauty and wonder and I was hooked. From there I had an A500 (1.3), played with a Uni mates A500+ with A 570 CD rom (so many hours lost to that!) before selling the 1.3 and buying an A1200.
    I now have about 8 A500/+, 4 A1200, 6 A600, 4 CD32 and an A2000.

One of the things I remember most about the Amiga, was going from the ZX Spectrum with it's blocky colour, to games with 32 colours or even 64 if they employed Extra Half Bright mode, or handling the floppy discs and them being so much faster than cassette tapes to load. Or how you could load up an image in one of the Amiga's many graphics modes and it be in 4096 colours, which was an amazing level of detail.
I remember some software (like Photon Paint) only wanted to run in interlaced modes, so there was all sorts of flickering going on. And we were using the same 14" TV as we'd used for the Spectrum, which only had RF. So, we had to use the TV modulator plugged into the RGB port of the Amiga, and pas the sound through it. So, although it looked incredible to our eyes, it was the worst possible way to use the Amiga. Eventually, that TV crapped out and died, and we moved to using a beautiful 17" Phillips TV set with stereo sound and a scart socket. With an Amiga to Scart cable, we were able to use RGB, and suddenly the Amiga was beautifully clear in a way it hadn't been before.
When we got our Amiga, we didn't have a lot of money, so we only tended to get new games for birthdays and christmases. But we could afford a couple of Amiga magazines. Previously, we had bought Spectrum magazines, which used to put multiple older full games on the covertape, which had built us up a sizeable collection of some great titles. The Amiga magazines didn't tend to put out full commercial games, but they did release some great Public Domain titles on their cover discs, as well as at least one big commercial application. Within a space of about two or three months, I had a full word processor, and a copy of a program called CrossDos, which enabled you to format a floppy disc as a 720Kb MS-DOS floppy. That meant I could write essays for school on my Amiga at home, copy it onto the MS DOS floppy, and take it to school to print out on one of their 286 or 386 PCs- which was amazing to me that I could do that.
The cover floppies gave us a tonne of amazing commercial programs that way. One of my favourite programs was called Vista or something - basically, you entered a random number, and it would translate that into a realistic fractal-based landscape, with trees, mountains and lakes. It used to take at least an hour to render it all, but it looked amazing when it was done.
Our Amiga was an A500+, which was an amazing machine, only had a single floppy drive and no hard drive. You could run the entire Amiga OS of floppy, but you would have to keep swapping discs. Or, if you were funning a wysiwyg word processor, and needed to load fonts or something - you'd end up swapping floppies multiple times. It was the same with games - most came on at least two discs. Some on three. So, unless you had an external floppy drive, you would be doing an awful lot of disc swapping. The ability to avoid that with an external drive was amazing. I also scored a 512Kb RAM expansion. The A500+ shipped with a full 1Mb of RAM, but even then, that wasn't that much. So the extra half megabyte made a big difference - especially when playing polygon-based games like a flight simulator.
Another Amiga memory, was that it was the first time i used analog joysticks. We got an amazing Amiga combat flight simulator called Reach for the Skies, which was all set during the Battle of Britain. You could fly a Spitfire or Hurricane against a variety of Luftwaffe fighters and bombers - a whole wave of them. In the options, you could could turn on gourad shading, which made the planes looks a lot more realistic. But you could also opt to use an analog joystick from a PC - you just needed a little convertor cable. playing a flight sim with a digital joystick is no fun, so I got an analog stick. It was amazing - so much more realistic.
And of course, I remember playing fantastic two-player games with my brother, like The Chaos Engine - still one of my absolute favourite games to this day.

I loved James Pond too, my sister used to come into my room just to play it with me. Good memories :) What I think I might have played the most on the Amiga though was probably Civilization. Also Dune, Dune 2, the Lotu games, Shadow of the beast, Another world, Space Crusade, Hero quest, Moonstone... there's just so many good old classics on the Amiga. Later on my Amiga 1200 I played Doom a lot, also a bit of Quake, but that ran pretty slow on my machine

I had an Amiga 500 but i was a kid who did not know English. Yet I figured out opening basic editor, one day one of our relatives who happens to be a programming teacher saw the amiga basic and show me some simple things, like for loops, drawing lines, and circles etc. That set me for lifetime programming adventure. My favorite game was Agony, just the amosphere, the music made me look games different way, different compared to arcade or atari games so to speak. I still judge games with those first, gameplay later. I think Amiga 500 was the machine had most effect on me in my life, good thing is I found it in my mother's basement, it still works.

Used to love playing the Simpsons and Lemmings on my friends Amiga 500. Then he picked up a Snes with Streetfighter 2 and Mortal Kombat which we had first played in the arcades. Then Mario Kart was the go to game on the Snes. I had a Megadrive myself so my friend would come over to play Streets of Rage at my house and I would play Snes at his. Back then it was mostly one console or the other for most kids but did have one friend who had all consoles.

I have many memories of the thousands of hours that I spent playing the Amiga. But easily my standout memory was seeing the intro and beginning of Shadow of the Beast, probably in Dixons or Currys, and just thinking this is outrageous. This is so far above anything I've seen before on a home machine. I also remember my mum telling me that it was too much money for me to have one, and getting a paper round so that I could save up, and it must have taken me a year based on the derisory wage I used to receive! But it was worth it!

Hi Gemma, I started off Amiga wise, with a new 500+, followed by a 600 before moving onto the bad boy...a 1200 that I bought the overdrive plug in external hard drive for. I must of spent a fortune but justified it by saying it was for the kids (3boys). So much fun had and some cracking games back then. I loved Cannon Fodder & the boys Sensible Soccer. The game developers had a sense of humour for sure. Other fav games (so many!) were Lemmings, Zool, Syndicate, Shadow of the Beast...the list is endless. Poor partner had no interest in computer games, we collectively must of drove her mad, however she did used to crave a good old blast on Pinball Dreams....so realistic for the time. Thanks for rustling up some good memories during this crappy time. All the best to you & Jess 😊

The Best Two Games on Amiga in my memories were Cannon Fodder and Sensible World of Soccer

I played all the popular games at the time with my sister on the A500 and a bit of A1200. but for me my most vivid memory of excitement was... (now I was already starting to cut my teeth on music software for the amiga and enjoyed messing around with MED) and there was this day around 1994, dad comes home from work/town and slaps down onto the kitchen table, CU Amiga [may '94] magazine with the gold egg and chick on it and I see the brand new OctaMED 4 purple floppy disk still in its wrapper and I'm so hyped for it.
but to be fair, all new mags Dad brought back had me excited, the amiga formats too! and I really miss the days of seeing those mags stocked in news agents! I have so much nostalgia connected with those magazine and their front covers.... it'll never leave me. I still have my a1200 and a500 and am very active in certain scenes!

I had a similar childhood. I got a Super Nintendo SF2 pack for xmas 92.
Some of my friends had Amiga's and I was also mesmerised by them.
I asked every xmas for one, but I never did get one.
Came close one year, when one day my mother said are you still wanting an Amiga?
I was like yeah, and she said ok we'll go to the town today to buy one.
We got into the town and I hurried into Electronic Boutique to be told sorry kid, they're discontinued.
I have an Amiga 1200 now though :)

I bought an Amiga 500 in 1991 from the proceeds of selling my car. I can't remember if it came with any software pack, but that pic of Tutenkamun Deluxe Paint really sold it to me. Favourite games were Lemmings and Eye of the Beholder (despite the disk swapping!). I went to uni in 1993 and the Amiga didn't get used so much, with all the distractions of uni! The A520 modulator was really playing up so I decided to sell my collection in 1997 :(

I really enjoyed hearing your about your memories and they definitely resonated with me, I remember feeling like this. I had a much older cousin whom used to babysit me and my 2 sisters and he would bring with him he’s Atari ST, I was blown away, I begged my parents for a long time to get one, which eventually I got one Xmas I think I even cried, such amazing times... Then I got to secondary school and my friends that had computers all had Amiga’s. I saw the games on the Amiga when I went to their houses and the Amiga versions of all the games were always superior. So I always wished I knew about Amigas before begging for my Atari ST.

I had an Amiga 1200 that I pimped with a CPU upgrade and an 80mb hard drive. The Amiga was my gaming system as I wasn't allowed a console. As the Amiga was a computer I was expected to use it for college work. We had a dot matrix printer that used to takes ages to print. So many amazing games on the Amiga. My 2 favourites were championship manager and Swos my friends and I spent hours playing both games.

Love the vid Gem 👍 It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything in the comments, but had to on this one 😁 I loved the Amiga but my first gaming platform was the C64 . I had copied games on both machines . If I remember correctly you could get about 8-10 copied games on a cassette for the C64 . I had an uncle and a cousin who would get them for me . When I moved on to the Amiga my dad (who was a miner at the time) used to come home from work with huge lists of games printed out on A4 sheets of paper, and I could choose anything I wanted. Later on me and my friends copied and shared games , like almost every Amiga owner back then . Good old Xcopy ! 😁 It’s funny , at the time I always wanted the games consoles , but my friends who did have them only had a handful of games , where as I had draws full of games on the Amiga . Some of the ports on Amiga were complete trash , such as street fighter and few others . Street fighter wasn’t a patch on the snes version , and the lack of games like Mario had me envious . But for the most part the Amiga version of most games were the definitive versions for me . The sound and visuals were nearly always superior , apart from a small few . I miss my Amiga, and I’m always looking out for another . One day I’ll bite the bullet and get one . Even if it does cost me a couple hundred. Loving the content as always Gem . Thanks for the nostalgia trip 😁👍

I had a A500 WB1.3, A1500+ and lastly an A1200 which got stolen. I found Edge vol 10,11,12 in the news agents and bought one of them with Ridge Racer on the cover, saw the review for 3DO Road Rash and the upcoming Ridge Racer on the PS1. From that moment forward I became a American/Japanese import guy. My memory of the Amiga was wowing over the graphics, but only a few handful of games stick with me today. Lotus 2, Monkey Island, Twintris, Alien Breed, Dyna bomber, Blues Brothers and Stunt Car Racer were my favourites and probably the only ones I would play today. The C64 had at least 50 games I would play today so I prefer that era over the Amiga. I did like the tech demos on the amiga, the first time I saw the RSI megademo I was hooked.

I didn’t have an Amiga growing up. I guess they were available in America but I didn’t know anybody who had one. I probably read about it at some point in some magazine but I don’t remember. I was primarily interested in consoles and handhelds because that’s what I usually played. First the NES and Game Boy and then Game Gear, Sega Genesis, and SNES, and I even had a Lynx. But I rarely played PC games until I got Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. So I wasn’t paying much attention. But now I’ve started to play some Amiga games. I like some of the dungeon crawlers. I love that genre tho. I’ve played some CD32 games too now. I like Darkmere and Dragonstone. I have a lot more to play but I do plan on exploring. I figured you were a fan as a kid. You clearly are passionate about the Amiga. It’s nice to see more genuine people talking about things they genuinely love on TH-cam. I feel like a lot of people just cover popular games and don’t really love a lot of what they talk about. That’s understandable since you do need views to be successful but I can tell when someone really is interested in what they’re covering. Anyway, I just found this channel and I subbed after watching a couple videos. I have a lot of videos to go thru and I’m looking forward to it. You seem like a pretty cool lady and I’ll be watching more in the future. Thanks for sharing your memories. It was nice to listen to

Cool, Amiga content :) Always nice to hear people's Amiga memories, nice story :)
Played with my Amiga 500 just couple of weeks ago, for example the Lotus Trilogy, great racing game for the Amiga. I also played Out Run, which was my favourite game for Commodore 64 and Amiga. For comparison, played Out Run even with PC, as my Amiga game box (KIXX release) also included the PC version, and played again also in Forza Horizon 4 the LaRacer event about Out Run :D Fun comparison how racing games have changed during the decades.
I did even draw a Knight Rider inspired picture (KITT's dashboard) with DeluxePaint 3 :P
Before Amiga, I had Commodore 64 and before that, a Salora Manager, a rebranded Vtech Laser 2001 home computer which I got in 1986. Probably not very well known home computer anymore. Salora was my first home computer and I still have it and last time I checked, it was still working.
Sold my Commodore 64 in 1991, but now I've been able to play again C-64 games I used to play as a kid with the Mini C-64 :)

There was a guy in the Argyle Arcade in Glasgow who used to sit behind a small table with a couple of folders listing copied Amiga games for sale which he kept in boxes behind him. I think it was £2 per disk. I used a Sega Master System control pad. Great memories of playing Monkey Island, Cannon Fodder, Zool, Theme Park, Desert and Jungle Strike, but mostly Championship Manager Italia and, still my favourite game of all time....Sensible World of Soccer.

Mega Drive controllers will NOT do any damage to an Amiga, only a Commodore 64. The myth that it damages Amigas is a holdover from the fact that it does damage C64s. So many people keep perpetuating the myth without ever bothering to get their facts straight.

I had the Amiga 500. Probably the best memory was learning how to copy games and trading them with friends at school. I also owned a C64 and CD32. Years later I bought a C16 with some games for £1. There was a big sense of community.

    • @greenkitty82
      @greenkitty82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bowdon yes I had the Amiga 500 too. But it was the plus and still have it. I had some games bought at the store like sleepwalker, WWF wrestle mania and monkey island but most were copies from a guy we knew down the carboot sale who we'd see every Sunday to buy more games. And they worked flawlessly too. I agree with what you mean with there being a sense of community with these consoles - we'd pick up one of the Amiga magazines from the newsagent each month and you'd get your free demo disks! I still have my mortal Kombat 2 one but those were the days of the 90's! How the kids today have no idea how much fun it was 😎

I loved everything about my Amiga, right down to the sound of the floppy disk loading. I pestered my dad for so long to get me one. I clinched it with "But dad, I can do my homework on it!!". Obviously no homework was done. Especially as the A500 I got came with 100's of illegitimate games!
Like you, a couple of my mates had Amigas and I only had a Megadrive with a couple of games (Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Zombies, Batman, Sonic, and Flashback) and there was GamesMaster magazine pumping out the reviews. Amiga Format with the awesome demos and utilities.
God, the Amiga was fantastic for its time. My dad tried to copy Alien Breed 2 from my mates retail version and wiped it, lol. Wasn't allowed to play with him again!
