Fallen in love with this channel. I have been transported back to the early to mid 90s, some of the best days in my life. The best games, best friends, best days out. Days when I used to spend 2 hr on a bus with mates to go to Manchester, go round the Arndale and games shops (even Games Workshop) get a cheeseburger at McDonalds, walk up to Afflecks Palace and float around there, get back to the bus station, bus back to Rochdale, then on to where I lived just outside, get home with a buddy or go to his house, stick on the Amiga/Megadrive and bust out a full length sesh on SOR2 or Gunstar Heroes, or take turns on Cannon Fodder. I don't know if there are groups of people who get together and basically revert to 1993 and being 11 by playing games and watching 90's videos but I would LOVE to either attend something like that or get it going.

I'm sure someones said this already but just as an extra bit of info. The Amiga 500 Mini has a 68030 CPU according to SysInfo whilst the A600 is 68000 whilst stock. The Mini has more RAM Slow and Fast and also booting from HDD installed games vs floppy images hence the differences in speed and frame rate. Of course you can upgrade the A600 CPU and RAM with an accelerator.

Gemma, regarding the games which are not working on your A600 is because of compatibility issues due to bad programming back in the day. These games are mostly coded to work on A500 with Kickstart 1.3 and 512mb fast ram memory expansion. I recommend you to get compact flash IDE-adapter with compact flash card as hard drive solution. Then get budget accelerator like Furia 33 that comes fast ram expansion. After that you can install Amiga OS and WHDLoad software for your A600 and run the same WHDLoad patched games on A600 (mostly) without any issues as The A500 mini does. Get OS3.2 and Kickstart ROM upgrade as well. Consider getting OS expansion such as ClassicWB on top of Amiga OS as it gives you pretty much all the tools you need on AmigaOS. Believe me, you wont regret upgrade like this. I am sure that the guys at RetroPassion can help you again to get this all done very quickly.

600's are the perfect cute bedroom computers for retrogaming IMO
only problem is display options, you either have a CRT TV and use the comp, a proper RGB CRT monitor, or you're lucky enough to have an internal scandoubler like the Indivision ECS but they're all sold out everywhere at the moment.
I'm guessing most people in 2022 just wanna hook a LCD monitor up to one.

And maybe one about what machines you currently own. I only recently found your channel so I don't know what you own and what you don't yet, though I see you don't have a CD-I yet. Maybe some day! Have you got an Atari ST? There's arguably not much point with the Amigas you own, but could make for some interesting content and attract new audiences.

Gebs - did you make sure you compared pal vs pal, not pal vs ntsc? That may give distorted results as ntsc would be faster.
Amiga games, via Gotek / emulation, requires you to try different versions. The Amiga can run WHDLoad, HDF and lha files. Try different ones.

  • @aztockdog

Do you happen to be using a SCART to HDMI converter on the Amiga 600? It took me a while to realise I needed to press the button on the box until it was in a 4:3 aspect ratio like 800x600 or 1024x768 @50hz… that will stop the Amiga 600 screen being stretched to fit the widescreen 16:9 as seen here in this video. Otherwise the TV remote needs to change aspect ratio to 4:3 for the Amiga 600

@@TheGebs24 Ahh cool! So do you run straight into the TV with the yellow ‘composite’ cable / rca plug? Is that the same way you hook up to your capture device too? If it’s stretched automatically when on your TV you should be able to fix that by changing the ‘Aspect Ratio’ setting from 16:9 to 4:3… also before you invest in any Amiga to HDMI converter send me a message as I have been down the rabbit hole and have some good info ;) If I can help a fellow Amigan anytime too easy. Some games run too fast on the A500 mini, but there is an easy fix (at least until Retro Games Ltd releases a proper fix). You need to find your game in on the flash drive and find its corresponding uae file. Edit the file using notepad in Windows and add a line just under the memory configuration that says:
    cpu_speed=real
Once you've done that, save the file. Now the next time you run the game it should perform at the correct speed. If you can't find a game's uae file, you need to make one. Easiest way to do that is to go to your game on the mini and change one of the settings (it doesn't matter which one). This will then create an uae file for that game.

I've got the original Amiga 500 with Gotek love it more then the A500 mini......my reasons are...older games run great on the original hardware, Buggy Boy and few others run to quick on the mini and have to add a txt line just to to slow it down, plus also can't get some older games to load up as stuck on intro screen.....but for aga games the mini plays them well, let's hope for a firmware update soon to fix some of these bugs, "A500 mini is more of a quick casual gaming" in my eyes as original 500 will play all the old classics with no hiccups and will just work without messing about with sittings but won't get the aga games....that's where the A500 mini is good and that's aga games but still that cropped screen

    Hi Gem
Play ‘Warhead’ by Glyn Williams. Recommend turning the lights down low and crank up the sound a bit, for one of the best atmospheric intros appearing out of the blackness and for the most foreboding music theme that I ever recall on the Amiga !
This is a 3D space patrol and combat game, that I found a lot more accessible than the “Elite” space patrol game.
Also fan of the Novagen 3D aspect games. The space mission ‘Mercenary’ game and the ‘Damocles’ sequels. Check them out, as they have absorbing missions. Full of Easter Eggs, gaming in jokes and more jokes at the expense of governments of the day.
The most impressive performant 3D shoot ‘em up games on the hardware from Novagen are “Battlezone” like games ‘Encounter’, fast on a C64 and better again on Amiga, then outdoing that with ‘Backlash’.
How they got these two games to go so fast on the hardware back then, is gob smacking … sadly Paul Woakes of Novagen who authored many of these great games, passed away July 2017.

I loved Warhead. Amazing game and the intro was excellent. Warhead was sort of a spiritual prequel to the PC space sim game I-War(Independence War in the USA). I believe the audio in the intro was actually created by Michael Powell, who later partnered with Glyn Williams to form the studio Particle Systems. Michael Powell is better known in Amiga circles for creating the futuristic racing game Powerdrome and the sci-fi sub game Subwar 2050.

Speed, you are comparing a fast emulator with a 30year old 7MHz Computer.
Ofcourse some of the games won’t load on your Amiga 600, as you are emulating floppy load WITH kick 2.x that’s a really bad combination for sure, either use relokick 1.3 or better just switch out to real kickstart 1.3.
Now compare game play with a proper Amiga joystick vs that awful joypad.
Compare sound quality of the Paula chip vs the emulator.
Put in 030 and load games from flash disk in your Amiga 600 with whdload and check out compatibility and loading speed, now that’s fair comparison.

You run many screens in wrong aspect. When you compare Zool, Stunt car and the other games the screen is stretched on A600. You should set the TV, monitor to 4:3 to get correct picture. Regarding Stunt Car racer it will be faster on Mini since it is vector gfx. The same will happen if you play Stunt Car racer on Amiga 1200. The other games you compare would not benefit from faster hardware than Amiga 500 or Amiga 600 that is basically the same computer. Something is very wrong with the sych. with the sound fx when you play Pinball Dreams on the Mini.
