    After extensive taxi trials the model took off perfectly and flew well.
    Unfortunately the landing was made difficult by blustery cross-winds. the rest is history...
    Feel with Tony the shock!

      Autsch! The pilot is experienced flying single engine planes and landing these with great skill.
      In this case the plane he did not construct was very heavy annd it was the first ever twin power model he flew.
      The rest is history. Thanks for watching. On my channel ScaleJetFred you seee him performing perfect landings with different planes.

      He did apply power and that led to the crash. It did a classic VMC roll because one engine was dead and the other sone producing power. Works exactly the same on models as full size airplanes. Rather than a long explanation, look up "Airplanes VMC"

      @@JimForeman not quite. No dead engine, but he was too slow, and the stall-spin was initiated with high AOA, power added with no rudder to counteract p-factor/torque and use of ailerons instead of rudder which caused adverse roll - all contributing factors. But we can armchair quarterback all day - we weren't the ones on the sticks with fractions of seconds to respond at that time....

  • @ScaleJetFred
    @ScaleJetFred  9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Flaps where used, but I think not extended enough.
    But the flying speed because of very low throttle setting combined with variable wind direction stalled the model.
    It will be re-build.
    Greetings Fred

    • @whawaii
      @whawaii 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd have to agree with SPIRIT DOT. That approach was unstabilized & out of control. On my Ziroli B-25 I never get below 1/4 throttle until it's just a few inches off the ground. A practice I learned from my full-sized twin-engined flying days. The prop blast over the wings is a definite factor. Also, from the looks of it, I'd say that the right engine came up to power faster than the left engine. Another reason to never cut the power until touchdown. Rarely, do both engines come up on the RPMs equally, especially from idle. Best Wishes.

    • @richardalexander5758
      @richardalexander5758 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Low throttle settings are fine, its pitch that determines/controls air speed, not throttle, and speed is your friend, particularly when dealing with cross winds and turbulence.

      Shoulda put the nose down and throttled up at the first sign of instability. Your airspeed was WAY too low on approach and then, when you cranked it hard left after the right wing dropped, you cut off all flow over that left wing and it dropped like a freaking rock. It was a great flyer though!

    Always sad to see the crash of a gorgeous model. I'm a former private pilot and ultralight flight instructor and also have built and flown many RC planes (and crashed a few) as well as taught many students to fly RC as well. Sadly, this was strictly pilot error. The erratic final approach off to the side of the runway looked like an out of control roller coaster ride. I was just waiting for the stall during the TOO SLOW frequently nose high approach. Adding power too late and with the nose high and overcontrolling caused the classic stall and crash. Thankfully,the model does look repairable. I hope he rebuilt it and got to fly it successfully.

    Holy crap. I love models. Been building since I was about 10 and now that I'm over 50, I still love models,,,,,BUT this is the reason why I never went to remote control planes. The loss is heartbreaking after the money, time and prep work it takes and once you get to this level,,,,I can't imagine how many planes were destroyed to learn how to land or even fly for that matter. Sorry for the loss and hope it can be rebuilt.

    There are alot of comments about what happened in this vid. As a pilot I wanted to put in my 2 cents...I'm good at these. Its NOT pilot error. Now as the plane was on the approach it flew over and downwind from the cows. Unfortunately, this was at the exact time one of the cows cut the cheese. The lighter than air methane cow fart sadly trapped the craft in a "fart bubble". Notice the sudden jerk to the left. The fart literally blew this plane to its doom. So, me and my fellow NTSB friends have deemed the cause "Cow Flatulence".

    Very sorry to see that. That was some serious porpoising on final. I assume it was not tail heavy. I finished mine this year, same plane in silver, also with G-26's. On my maiden I stalled it just before landing and it came down pretty hard, breaking the nosegear mount. I was lucky it stalled straight ahead and did not drop a wing. I have had 5 flights now and realize you have to come in hot with plenty of power to make up for the huge drag of full flaps. No problem with takeoff or flying around but it is not a slow flier. Landings are the only part that make my knees shake.

      Yep it sure was a disappointment - I really should have know better than to come in so slow - got slightly caught with the updraft over our lake at the end of the runway - unfortunately she is not re-build able but with a bit of luck I will start the replacement next year as I have all of the necessary expensive ancillaries.

    Sorry to see that happen! What a beautiful build... That was a classic Approach stall complicated by a crosswind. Don't fly it down. Do you have trim ability? Set a shallow rate of decent using power only. Use surface controls for heading only. Practice shallow rates of decent over the runway. Keep the approach speed up! Practice slow flight near stall at altitude. Learn where the stall line is. Same principles, big or small. Crabbing isn't easy.Would be great to see it fly again.

    For those who are not aware or have not experienced it, this is NOT like crashing your ARF. This kind of modeling not only costs thousands of dollars to invest, but hundreds of hours of loving care and detail before you get to fly your beloved creation. Having a couple dozen large models myself, I can attest to the feeling of losing a kit built vs an arf! EVERY builder is also a TEST pilot. Sorry to see that Tony. Hope you can get her fixed. I realize that the damned depth perception was a big factor in your misfortune. I have learned to choose two landmarks, or flag them, so I get that 3rd dimension for flying my approach somewhere close to centerline. One of my fields is lined with logs on either side and we have to stay on the side of the runway..lots of scrap wood to be collected there!!

      Maintain thy airspeed lest the earth rise up and smite thee.
      I see a lot of pilots fly for 20 minutes and land once and they celebrate a landing as though a miracle happened. Most of my flights are at least 50% touch and go practice. Some are 100% touch and go. People should practice landing more. It's the only thing that counts.
      It was a shame but it was definitely pilot error. I know. I've been there done that and got the tshirt.

    heart breaking.
    pitch + power = performance. looks like a lot of fishing around with the elevator in trying to set a glide. I would figure out the approximate elevator angle for approach speed and use power to adjust for descent rate and angle. This airplane, by the thrid or fourth pitch up porpoise action, ran out of speed and energy.

      As a former RC pilot I have to agree.
      I would just as that since it a scratched built AC, perhaps it was built a bit too heavy with a too high of a wing loading for a scale AC?
      It did seem very controllable at high speeds .

    • @carmium
      @carmium 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Barb5001 It's also a very flat winged airplane, good for lifting bombs in reality but not inherently stable. I should think it needs land fairly briskly.

    • @bernardw4842
      @bernardw4842 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I think it looks that way... I'm not that great a pilot but I know that higher loadings need faster landings, so maybe that's what happened here. Sorry to be another armchair expert, but I'm trying to learn from seeing this for when I build my own larger models.

      As an avid builder and flyer of RC planes I can feel your pain. Maiden flights are always the toughest. I have a number of heavy warbirds and they almost all require plenty of speed to avoid the tip stall upon landing. I wish you luck in the rebuild process. That plane is worth the effort. It was a beautiful B-25. Good luck from Southern California.

    Reminds me of an incident I witnessed as a kid. Guy was flying his glider, impressive one with over 3m wingspan, through increasingly risky fast turns until finally the right wing broke. Gutted the whole plane. Don't know how many hours he lost that day. The only thing I still remember of those holidays. Biggest model plane I ever saw.

    slow speed, turn and add wind to that and its a recipe for disaster -

My father made the landing gear for me, so I keep whats left to remember his efforts. Is telemetry just another gimmick for the data obsessed pilots among us, or can it actually be used for something useful like giving a pilot his airspeed as he's landing? My radio has voice warnings and a headphone jack. Has anyone ever used telemetry in this way and did it help?
    PS I'm not implying why this gorgeous plane crashed or anything like that, but if you know your planes stall speed, and your airspeed in real time, may be useful no?

    • @bernardw4842
      @bernardw4842 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've experimented with it as I bought the telemetry pack for my Hitec Aurora 9x (most under-rated, great value radio out there!) but it was only of limited use... 1stly, most ppl only receive speed updates from the GPS and the wind isn't taken into account, unless you actually buy the airspeed device. Plus, you have to find the minimum landing speed/stall speed beforehand by trial and error, so unless the model comes with pre-tested data like that, you're not going to know what that is. I found by the time I was experienced enough to set up all that info, I was good enough at landing that model not to need it.

    • @daddski1
      @daddski1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol only in a re run lol... naw its a nice radio but too expensive. I have all the major brands including the new hitecs but the best radio i've ever owned in 35 years of flying is my taranis x9d. Low cost recievers that NEVEr fail or lose a frame. A radio with almost twice the range of my Aurora as well and for the cost of one aurora reciever I can have 3-5 of equal or better range etc.. not to mention 16 regular channels and 32 if I use the correct recievers. Every channel programmable to whatever I want it to be and the Amber voice pack makes it one darn sexy radio :-)

    • @bernardw4842
      @bernardw4842 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used it and I found the GPS-based speed wasn't particularly useful. For starters it's ground speed not airspeed, unless you have the special sensor, however that's getting much easier to do now. With GPS also it's not instantaneous, it's telling you the speed last time it was measured; some sets will have faster results than others but the one I was using (I forget but I think Futaba_ had too much lag; half a second and you can't really use it for landing as you alter for landing. However, with an ASI instrument that should be better. I have Hitec Aurora 9X and Optima 9 Rx, you can get all that for this gear and the one I saw had quite low latency for other measurements (not GPS but temp, RPM etc.), again it didn't have air speed indicator. So no, don't buy GPS for that, but it's good to work out later what speeds to expect on different parts of the circuit. Where I fly it's easy to lose a model in the trees and scrub and hard to find, and could be VERY helpful there! So long as it keeps transmitting.... if you're logging you could get the last known position. Useful for advanced scale projects sometimes, eg. one guy had expensive radial engine under a scale cowl and thought his heads might be overheating so he bought temp. sensors, found that yes, was a little high, and modified the cowl, until he proved it was fixed.
      GPS is useful for teaching you how to more accurately estimate things like altitude and speed by looking at the model, and the response time *should* be good enough for that. It's best if you can mount a screen like a small tablet on your Tx, so you can use the telemetry dashboard for info at a glance, or the voice caller for critical stuff. Logging to external device is very worth it. I've used the Hitec stuff more often and found it actually pretty good, the Tx-screen dashboard was fine really but a tablet would be better. It was great value until the local distributor screwed up the pricing, air speed meter went from $17 to over $65!! And removed all the best package deals. Looks like the Spektrum new series of telemetry gear is becoming popular but I don't own any Spektrum gear so can't comment. Anyway, to answer your question, GPS really isn't much use for what you intend, most importantly because it's only ground speed - if you can fly in near-zero wind conditions then great, otherwise it screws it up. But, with logging, and getting to know local conditions to correct, it could be useful to help you build knowledge of what you're model's doing, then with a voice caller you'd know if that's a safe speed... *IF* you get a real AS instrument too.
      Have to say, you can still get the Hitec telem. deals from overseas and they seem like excellent value for the IC engine pack. Certain places sell Tx/Rx/optional servo packs in Australia so much cheaper than even with shipping to US it's an amazing deal, and A9X is massively under rated. With telemetry it's a great system at competitive price. I only have one v. small electric model so I wouldn't bother but the e-pack for elec. models looks pretty good too.

    Looks like wind sheer, then a wing tip stall... Pilot needs a touch more experience i think

    • @ScaleJetFred
      @ScaleJetFred  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for visiting my channel. You are correct, it was little wind . But at the low speed of the model near a stall everything makes a difference.

      What is with these excuses this pilot needs to either focus on Building or flying He seems to be a very good builder but is substandard flyerIt takes pretty big balls to take a scratch built plaine put Hundreds of hours into building it And maden it in less than optimum condition Who is he kidding next time just take the plane drive over it with your car in the parking lot buy a good arf and learn to fly for God sakes

      hat's not nice Jeff...

    • @daddski1
      @daddski1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the conditions looked about as optimal as it gets. He failed to keep up speed and that was a killler. You make mistakes and you learn. He got the plane fixed and flew better next time.... I think that is. But hey it was his mistake to make and learn from.

    hey fred; nice bird; next time get someone who knows how to fly the bigger birds to do it; your approach was horrible, please practice your approaches and airspeed control before you do this again. Sorry she went in, but your approach sucked and it stalled big time. Or go around if it looks like that again, cheers

    Look at it this way - had you not broken it, you'd have always been fretting about getting it smashed. This way you can go back to the labour of love in the rebuild and you have this nice video in the meantime and thousands of armchair pilots to call on. I loved the engine noise, sounded quite authentic.
