  • Rare footage shows an attack on a hammerhead shark by a tiger shark off the coast of Louisiana. A sport fisherman had gotten the hammerhead on the line only minutes before the other, much larger shark approached the fishing boat and seized its prey. Sport angler Ryan Willsea and his brother Aaron captured the footage using a selfie stick to submerge an action cam.

    So the hammer head gets completely tired out fighting the line and at the same time dodging a tiger shark. Not a fair fight at all and pretty cruel not cutting the line imo.

      @ahmedrizk300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes...Lowlifes...Honestly, this comment section is bloody awful. Alright, it wasn't sport what they did, I'll say, but how is it low life? They're fish. It's not the end of the world and it's not as if this wouldn't happen naturally.
      This, of course, was not natural, however, it seems they were caught in the moment and didn't do much about it. It's not particularly great, but I wouldn't go down to call anyone doing it a "lowlife", whether I'd do it or not. Lowlifes are awful human beings, and while this isn't a great thing to do, it certainly does not lower you to robbers, murderers, and other nice folks. And, once more, they're fish. I understand it might've been cruel, but they're fish. It's not THAT big of a deal, in my eyes, anyways.

      @@ahmedrizk300 What gives Humans anymore right to life than Animals?..who decided all other forms of life were dispensable at any whim of Man's. The human race is the most destructive and aggressive of all animal life. To wantonly kill or torture is man's special gift...and this applies to animals and humans. No,. The life of an animal should not been at the whim of some human who gets a kick out of killing.

    • @ahmedrizk300
      @ahmedrizk300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rustykilt The logic that applies here is their sentience and sense of pain, which makes killing humans significantly worse than animals. However, many mammals also feel pain and have a certain degree of intelligence, which makes killing then needlessly a terrible act unless you're under ten in which case you'll get a time out.
      The difference with fish that they're simpler. I don't needlessly kill fish, though I sometimes catch fish and throw them out to cats if they're small. The logic here is that fish have a short memory, a limited understanding of pain (so far as a I remember reading) and are often not endangered (though this does not apply to the Hammerhead in question.), which makes them rank a bit low on the scale of 'Worth Saving'. Once more, I am not saying that you should kill fish needlessly, I am saying that fish aren't that important, so an act like this, even if it wasn't sport, does not equate them to hooking a live human/cat/dog in the water, if anything because the Hammerhead hooked itself by biting and was thus in that difficult situation and because cutting the line, while possible, is a bit difficult with a mechanical teel that is most likely getting dragged more and more by the second.

    • @rustykilt
      @rustykilt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Ahmed Rizk appreciate your response. I fish and hunt, but respect life in all its forms. To kill for fun is beyond my understanding. Yes, all animals have different levels of sensitivity and their senses may be very basic if nearly nonexistent, but, It does not make them any less important in the scheme of life.

      Allosaurus RCA no it probably wouldn’t have, see hammerheads are among the least aggressive sharks because their bodies just don’t support aggressive nature like tiger sharks, and often the poor hammer heads fall victim to tigers like this one just because there’s nothing they can do, the most it could have done is tried to swim away but the tiger was bigger it would have caught it, they should have jabbed the tiger shark tried to kill it

    • @fishfossils8858

      Steampunk Seven wouldn’t have worked the tiger shark was bigger and tiger sharks again more agro, therefore have a body built for it its got speed to compensate, I suppose they could have caught the tiger shark and given the hammer head time to run but it was bleeding the tiger would probably have tracked it down

    • @aldotanca9430
      @aldotanca9430 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +skurr Not sure where you got that from? It is very unlikely a tiger shark would attack an hammerhead shark of the same size, and in general it will only attack large creatures if it senses that they are wounded or otherwise impaired, as in this video's case. I don't think the bite force is all that different. Also hammerhead sharks can grow up to 6 meters, more than the average tiger shark and not much less a great white.
      Perhaps you have heard that tiger sharks are particularly dangerous, but that is more because the places they live and their way of feeding make it more likely for them to encounter humans. Based on what is normally found on their stomach, they seem much more likely to eat already dead stuff if they can, and take the risk to attack living things.
      Conversely, while hammerhead sharks are potentially dangerous, they tend and attack when they sense you are competing with them for food. So, going fishing with a spear near a feeding hammerhead shark is a bad idea. In general, most sharks seem to prefer a safe bet, and will not attack creatures which are big or dangerous.

    • @skurr
      @skurr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Aldo Tanca You said it yourself in the second sentence. Tiger sharks would not attack a hammerhead of the same size. Clearly from the video the Tiger Shark is much larger than the Hammerhead and was probably seen as easy prey. The fact that it was already hooked was just a pleasant surprise. Shark's vision is fairly poor and could not possibly know that it was hooked from afar and probably was attracted due to the smell of the blood and possibly the sound of it thrashing. The Tiger took a few test bites to make sure it was a good meal and took advantage of an opportunity.

    NatGeo should be ashamed framing this as a 'VS' video. That Hammerhead was on a fishing line, totally unable to fight back against a larger predator. In their eagerness for GoPro footage, those fishermen basically baited the Tiger into massacring the Hammerhead. If they had cut the line and given the HH a fair chance, they wouldn't have got the footage. Don't know who's worse -- NatGro or the fishermen.

    This was really hard to watch. Kind of disgusting to not cut the line. It could have tried to flee. I'm pretty sure a hammerhead outswims a tigershark, especially at that size difference. It would have likely gotten away. But hey, anything for views right?

    I was literally thinking the same thing as Mark How. Given that this is supposed to be a National Geographic video I thought they would have given the hammerhead a fighting chance to survive by at least running from an obviously larger shark.

    When did National Geographic go so low?? I would learn about nature thanks to National Geographic as a child, and I sometimes dreamed of being part of the team. But now I see that you have joined the rest of youtube community and algorithm standards, feeling the need to broadcast people fishing in one of the worst ways possible (and out of pleasure not necessity). And you are showing an animal trapped by a hook and fishing line, being attacked by another animal. What have we learned here, in terms of biology, nature, animal behavior?
    Very shameful

    Okay but hammerhead sharks have amazingly sharp teeth and are even known for attacking other sharks, so if this had been a fair fight from the beginning then the hammerhead would have had fair game and would deffinetly had a chance at winning.

    NatGeo should not be associated with this video, I'm a sport fisherman for 30 years and the angler that caught this hammerhead nor the skipper had the brains to cut it free their not sportsman in any respect of the word. They obviously and deliberately baited the hooked hammerhead against the tiger shark for their sad entertainment, in fact the areas fish and game should use the video evidence to prosecute them, to accept such actions is to give sports fishmen a bad reputation.

    The thing that makes these things really scary isn't the shark itself, but the visibility under the water. You won't see anything that's 10 feet away nor would you hear anything approaching you as easy as we could in land. It's a place where all odds are against us.

  • @theamphibinator

    Guys even if they cut the hammer head free, that tiger shark would have still killed it. It was way bigger and faster. Tiger sharks regularly eat hammer heads . I do think they should have cut it free but the outcome would not have changed.

    Why did these clowns not cut the line? Easy answer they were more interested in capturing the footage of the trapped hammerhead than giving it a chance at survival.
