  • This Pub Test covers Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as a suspect in the Jack the Ripper saga.
    Could the writer of Sherlock Holmes be the Ripper himself? Lets put it to the Pub Test.
    Hope you enjoy.

    Loved the way you told this one. Also, Sherlock did like a disguise too.

      Thanks for the nice comment. It's funny how the most famous fictional detective came into existence at the same time as Jack the Ripper.

    You need a paisley cravat to go with your flash suit. Would look great! Doyle's books are actually hard to read, characters are great but a hard row to get through. ❤

    🤣🙂Gr8 Stuff, Owen...The Police apparently pulled a heap of people in to check their handwriting and Conan Doyle wasn't one of them, as he was never there in Whitechapel, as U said....Not JTR, but an interesting story on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Owen...Wonder if RDS wrote the Dear Boss letter, as he was a Journalist, as well as being a Retired Medical Doctor.🤔🙂

      Thanks Damo. There is so much more to Arthur Doyle's life than could be covered in this series.
      It's no wonder that he made this list considering his profile. Not a super credible suspect though as you state. 🍺👍🙂

    I'm really enjoying this series. Good job! Who do you think Jack The Ripper was so far? I have to say I'm pretty sold on Charles Lechmere, but if not him I would say Jacob Levy.

      Thanks for watching the series. The two you mentioned are in my top five at this point. Still have a few to go through yet, which is rather scary. I do have an opinion, but the writer in me is keeping that until the last page. :)

    Patricia Cornell makes a good case for the painter Walter Sickert. He probably wasn’t the Ripper, but was definitely fascinated by the case.

    When you look at Doyal remember he was not the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes he was more like the bumbling Dr Watson..He was into the belief of little fairies (not human type not to be rude..) Anyway, he was also into the fake spiritually of the day, also telepathy, so he was a little off center of the normal of the day. Was he Jack? I don't see it because he never displayed the anger hatred or anti authoratism Jack displayed. He was probably intrested in the ripper because he served as inspiration of the evils Sherlock would solve. Now the inspration of Holmes was an old proffeser he had. He used a person in the past to as a personal hero and blended it with the crimes of the day. The one thing that stands out to me is the deerslayer hat..both the ripper and Sherlock were reported to wear one.. but not compatant enough to be the Ripper profile in my opinion.

    • @OwenNeidhart
      @OwenNeidhart  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I definitely think he based Dr. Watson on himself. In fact the drawings of Watson resemble Arthur very closely. ( Also being a Dr. )

    If you are going to start blurring the lines between fact and fiction, then Sir Arthur Conan Doyle emerges very much on the side of the angels. He secured the acquittal of an Indian lawyer, who had been wrongly convicted of a series of horse ripping's. The event reads very much like the plot of one of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

    • @OwenNeidhart
      @OwenNeidhart  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      There are so many details in his life that are fascinating.
      That detail of the horse ripping I left out. But the information sent to me suggested that he did the horse ripping and that is why he knew the other person was innocent.
      I found that a bit of a stretch, so I chose to leave it out.
      I don't think he was the Ripper either, but some people have put in lots of work to make that connection.
      Thanks for throwing in that extra detail, much appreciated. 👍🙂

      @@OwenNeidhart I understand that you give time to the less plausible theories, and that is fine. A detailed breakdown of the horse ripping matter, would honestly have been a better use of Pub Test time. That would have been a much better video.

    I don't think Doyle was Jack the Ripper. The case against him comes down to that he was a man of the right age who lived in England and had the anatomical knowledge and knife skills to do it. I think the Dear Boss letter was a hoax, and therefore not a clue to anything. I think the Ripper targeted prostitutes not because he hated them, but because they were willing to go with him to places where they were unlikely to be disturbed. Doyle wasn't able to solve the Ripper murders, but neither was anyone else, unless you believe Anderson and Swanson did, in which case, Doyle wasn't their suspect. Being the Ripper wouldn't make Doyle more famous if the crime remained unsolved. If he was interested in the case and knowledgeable about it, the same could be said for you and me.
