I always theorized one of the reasons LEGO wouldn't take up Pokemon is because to get the look right takes too many unique or unusually shaped pieces that wouldn't be able to hold up to quality and structural stability requirements LEGO has. MEGA is a bit more willing, and they manage it using a sort of rubber molding instead of bricks for things like fur tuffs, wool and oddities like Lucario's dreadlocks.

I'm mostly into SW sets just because I'm a fan of the franchise, but I will say that there's a lot more creativity in the original themes on display.
I don't think that's really Lego's fault, the SW sets are designed to recreate existing designs. SW is limited by the quirks of Lego pieces, but original themes can use them to their advantage since they aren't trying to fit a specific mold.
IMO Star Wars are great for fans of the franchise, but if you're looking for a fun build, go for an original theme.

I have the opposite problem : My youngest little sister somehow prefers mini-dolls over minifigures so she buys friends, disney, etc... yet she's such a huge fan of the ninjago show and makes fantasy builds where she wants to make characters fight and such. Problem is, there's no threat or fighting outfits on minidolls, no angry faces, today I saw her try to assemble a "bad guy" from her mini dolls collection to have an antagonist during her play and she screamed "WHY DO THEY ALL LOOK SO FRIENDLY"... She's tired of building houses and picnics and modern things, wants medieval or fantasy elements like from ninjago, monkie kid, castle, harry potter, etc but minidolls have legit no way to achieve anything remotely aggressive. Seems like LEGO kinda excluded girls like her in a way by limiting minidolls from their "girl inclusion movement" to stereotypically girly things. Closest thing was elves and that was way before her time. It's one thing to replace mini dolls from friends sets with minifigs, but it's disheartening for her to ask me for LEGO Dreamzzz sets, get them, throw the minifigs away in a box never to use them, and have no minidoll possible alternatives.

11:02 Katana, if you ever need it to be on your back (super impractical, don't do that) has to have its edge facing UP, so when drawn, it ends up in the right orientation in your hands. If the cutting edge is facing down, then you end up with a reverse grip, and will have seconds left to live in a hypothetical ambush situation. This is the reason why regular Samurai also had their swords facing UP from the 15th century, even when the scabbard is tucked under their belt. When you draw it, the blade already faces the right direction for your first cut. If you are good enough, it's the only cut you'll need, so better have your sword carried ready. For nerds: the unsheathing motion itself has the wooden scabbard pulled back off a stationary sword by a flick of the hips, rather than having to extend your arm forward by a sword-length (which would critically expose your hand as the perfect target). :)

    • @rolandswift4311
      @rolandswift4311 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I have two things to add to this
      1) it's also a lot easier to draw a curved sword when the curve is in line with your natural rotation(Meaning the part that curves in is facing whatever joint will be rotating.)
      2) I actually saw a video by a channel called Shadiversity where they discussed wearing swords on the back. His main point was that its harder to draw without a specialized scabbard, but easier and more comfortable to move around in, especially over long distances. More relevant to this conversation, however, was one of the comments. A commenter said that, while making a movie for a film class; they'd planned to wear their swords on their hips, but found they got in the way with the kind of acrobatic choreography they wanted. They ended up switching to wearing them on their backs because it made it easier to exhibit higher levels of agility and acrobatics, just like what you'd expect from a ninja.

    • @andreasforster3614
      @andreasforster3614 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also, in regard to simply storing a katana (without wanting to draw it from that position), you'll also want to have the blade facing up, because having the sword rest its entire weight on the finely sharpened blade can dull the blade faster.

I think LEGO should design minifigures where removing the arms, hands and individual legs should be a feature, instead of an "illegal" technique that could ruin a minifigure if not done carefully. I mean some people purposefully remove minifigure limbs for a scene or just to replace the hands. Even in official LEGO animations like the LEGO Movie have parts where a minifigure's limbs are apart from their body. Just imagine the creative possibilities if we could swap out minifigure limbs, maybe with ones at different poses.

About the hands, their shape is clearly an approximation of the human hand, with the rounded shape representing the pinky side, and the flat shape being elevated from the wrist, like our thumb is.
So there is NO DOUBT that the correct position is with the flat side on top. That doesn't mean that you can't ever turn them around if you want their angle to go the other way, but just know that you're using them upside-down to create a different effect.
Just like how you can use a hot dog piece to represent a tube or a frog to represent some leaves, you can use an upside-down hand to represent a hand.

If a toy breaks behind a glass box, never feeling the touch of a loving child (be it 6 or 60) because it's pieces do not fit inside each other without stressing the material? That toy sucks.
I love Lego, don't get me wrong. But some of their decisions have made me...less than happy. Their complete mistreatment of bionicle back in 2015 caused the line to fail. Bionicle didn't fail, Lego failed bionicle. If they had been responsible with the theme we likely would have had more than three waves of g2, and possibly would have had a complete g1, with the red star line and the dinosaur line, and all those other cancelled sets.
Another problem I have with the company is their irrational fear of competition. Competition drives up the quality and lowers the price. It benefits everyone. Unfortunately with Lego's stranglehold on the market and their (to be fair, very successful) smear campaign against all other brands, it's quite easy for the uneducated to assume anything not Lego is a cheap knockoff. I mean, mega is right there next to zulu or whatever the heck those true knockoffs are, why would you assume mega is a competitor when it gets less space than the ACTUAL KNOCKOFFS, almost as if it's intentional, to prevent the layman from learning megas true strength.
Besides. The brand you so love is itself a knockoff. Lego did not come first. They copied another brand and crushed it. Something I honestly hope mega eventually is able to do. Like Oreo and hydrox, transformers and gobots, I pray mega will someday soon break free of the shackles placed upon them by Lego.

I love medieval armies. It might just be because I'm old but I have a romanticized vision of knights on horseback riding into battle, swords clashing, and jousting.
And as for that Mega Construx argument. I get the appeal of having figs that actually look like the licensed characters. But the generic look of the minifig. They are so much more customizable. My Lego Renaissance started about 12 years ago. I had been out for a while but then I saw how many more options there were for minifig heads, torsos, and hair. I then went and made my whole family in minifig form. It was a lot of fun scouring eBay for heads and hair that matched my family. With my own minifig it was so much more fun when there is a little Lego *me* in the driver's seat of the car, piloting the jet, or dueling Darth Vader.

I like Lego and Mega Construx pretty equally nowadays tbh, but for dif reasons.
When I was a kid, I looooved the Mega Bloks dragons sets so much, the dragon eggs and the sets themselves. I loved their experimentation with coloring and texturing (using fur on mini figs, using genuine fabric for boat sails, having lots of different interactive/lightup elements etc), though I will admit that I wish the plastics they used were as durable as Lego at the time.
I think they really hit it outta the park with the Halo sets nowadays though, I especially LOVE the mini figs for it; having individual armor pieces that can be swapped out nowadays is so cool, and I love their poseability. I also appreciate that Mega Construx is willing to take more risks with colors. I understand why Lego limits their colors, to allow for more universal consistency and make acquiring more pieces of one color easier. But I looooove all subtle/muted greens and purples Mega has. They're also a lot more willing to take on IPs that Lego might see as too "adult", which I appreciate seeing! I love all the little xenomorph mini figs they've put out, for example.
On the other end, even if Mega's plastics def seem a lot more durable nowadays, I still think Lego, overall, is a lot more consistent with quality. I definitely have a few Halo sets that have warped just a bit from the sun through my window, and no longer hold together as tightly. You also can't beat Lego's customer service/attention to detail. I also feel like Lego is more consistent with the creativity/ingenuity of their builds, and they seem to take into account things like a build's durability (probably to stand up to a child's play a little better) more often.
So, overall, I guess I appreciate that Mega Construx is willing to take bigger risks and experiment with dif materials/concepts/colors, but I appreciate Lego's consistency and quality. I think, as an adult collector who only really uses them for display, the differences between them, for my purposes, are so small that I can appreciate the qualities of both.

If the katana is blade up and you reach back to grab and unsheath it, it will be in the right orientation. If the katana blade is facing down and you unsheath it you will have to turn the blade 180° in your hand to get it positioned correctly. I know we’re talking about Lego mini figures but I think you’ll be able to see my logic. 🤷‍♂️

One BIG difference between Lego and MegaBloks/MegaConstrux is the fact that Lego tries to staty away from military style sets, while MegaBloks/MegaConstrux does not, given they have the Halo and Call of Duty themed sets. Thus, focusing on only appealing to gamers. Then they took on the task of creating Star Trek themed sets, since Lego had Star Wars. No to mention they also had Game of Throne themed set, which clearly they made to widen there customer based to include more adults overall. But again, unlike Lego they do offer bricks on military green showing that they have no issue with encouraging military styled builds. When it comes to Lego, military set that have been independently made using Lego brick, had to rely on just using grey colored bricks for military themed builds.

About the Katana, the only right way to sheat a katana, historically, is the edge facing up, back of the blade down. This lessens the friction and wear on the fragile edge as it is being carried, drawn and sheathed. Otherwise the edge would be constantly jostled or rubbed against the scabbard when it is carried or used. This requires a slightly different way to draw the blade than what people would think but it also makes for a powerful draw as it can be drawn forward and over in an overhead strike in a single move. You can search for mini katana's video on how to draw a katana for a visual aid.

Here are some of my hot takes:
    - Stickers aren’t bad. Sure, I would prefer printed pieces, but stickers themselves can offer a wider range of creativity. For example, imagine a race car with a number on it. Having it printed gives EVERYONE the exact same car, but using stickers instead gives you the option to have just a bit more customization and personalization.
    - DUPLO isn’t bad and more people should use it. I’ve seen SO many people building giant mountains, and they always have the worst support structures. Using DUPLO and System together creates a larger and stronger support system while also using less pieces and taking less time to build.
    - Minidolls aren’t bad. I actually like minidolls and think some IPs or characters SHOULD use them over minifigures. That said, I still wish they had just a bit more articulation, like individual legs and wrist movement.
    - The Woody/Avatar arms and legs are awesome, and more minifigures should have them. It helps to create a height difference between the standard figure and taller characters, but LEGO just doesn’t use them outside of those few exceptions. I think something like Dreamzz could make good use of them, or maybe even an eventual Mr. Fantastic minifigure.

9:04 Technic bricks are definitely harder to understand how they work and utilize than normal Lego bricks would. But I don't hate them, it just takes more time to find out how I should be using them.

I have 2 hot takes. Minifigures are overrated and overpriced. I may have gotten 8 admittedly cool ones in my Atreides Royal Ornithopter set, but I don't know what to do with any of them. (mentioned in the previous video but it needed to be said.) Point 2: military sets need to become a thing for historical and technical fans. Imagine the cool features an F-22 Raptor or USS Nimitz or M1-A1 Abrams models would have.

I also feel that the simplicity of older sets is something that they have above the sets we see today

Technic Kits are really not for those that only like lego. They're heavily focused to those who are more mechanically minded especially considering the larger kids have you building multiple gearboxes and differentials. For me i prefer technic over lego because alot of lego kits seem a bit stale to me

To me, the peak of LEGO was when people were not obsessed with expensive complicated models, rather just building whatever they wanted. I still love playing with a big box of random old LEGO bricks wherever I can find one: unfortunately I’m not a kid anymore so that’s gonna get difficult. It was better when people just built what they wanted, and it’s great you can still buy a box of only bricks.
Besides, wasn’t that the whole plot point of the LEGO movie??
Same with the mini figures. I prefer basic characters not tied to any franchise, but I vastly prefer the newer ones with the more realistic eyes and facial expressions.

Lego needs to make a dedicated theme for amusement parks/circus. Also, technic makes sense in things like ferris wheels, roller coasters, etc.

I just got a retired lego set for my birthday that utilized QR codes (Ducati Panigale V4 R - 42107). Since the set is retired, the QR codes don't work anymore. Now imagine having a set where the manual is only available online...

My hot take is that baseplates and regular tiles should be the same thickness.
Say you’re trying to make an island with a beach. You get a green baseplate, but the sand colored baseplate is the same size, so that would mean making a giant island with a bunch of baseplates or just laying a bunch of green tiles on the sand baseplate. So you get some 16x16 sand tiles, and now they’re awkward and won’t fit right.

Lego Technic is the only Lego theme that is interesting because it’s a lot more about learning concepts and having non-specific pieces to encourage taking it apart and building something new. Modern Lego seems to expect that you won’t take it apart and that its value relies on it staying as it is

For the katanas, I think they should have the blade down, but think about how you would put it away. If you are holding the blade down then put it away it'd be flipped.
