At first I saw Strasburg and thought, no one there told me a lot of snow in Strasbourg France - then I realized, what strange weather everywhere. Beautiful blue sky and sharp contracts, why oh why do 17 miseries dislike this. Thanks for the upload, great !!
I usually go to Strasburg with my family every summer., and the latest I've ever been there was October. I stil lwanna go down there in the middle of winter sometime, from what i can tell, it's quite a sight.
I am surprised the plow does not have at least a couple of Engines when going through this really deep stuff. Thanks for the upload of this really special snow train. It just makes me go weak at the knees to watch these powerful and dramatic machines, thank you again. Take care. mrbluenun
what a wonderful job you did on this video, so many cool things here, the snow, the plowing, the whistles. you were a little out of breath at 3:50 from trudging thru the snow to get to a better spot, and we appreciate it.
I got to ride that train for my visit down there...There is a great little hotel/motel there where all the rooms are conductor cars on tracks! Lovely area and great steam age museum (many many trains to see)
Great Video. The plow hitting those deep drifts was fantastic. The fine folks at Strasburg Railroad know how to run a railroad and how great the equipment looked as well. Top Score 100% !
WOW! What a thrill! Until today, I've only seen still photos of steamers plowing snow. This was an event NOT to be missed! Wish I'd been there in person to see the action! Thank you so much for posting this video of real live RR snowplowing excitement! Fantastic, and saved to favorites! I absolutely MUST visit Strasburg some day! Gotta visit the on-line site NEXT! :-)
Wow, that must have been exciting to see the old Russel Snow Plow in action. I get up to Strasburg about twice a year to ride the trail. Never been there in the winter though. Thanks for the great video!
Thank god someone is shooting video. I thought I was the last one on the planet to shoot trains with HI Def video. Great job. That is one awesome engine!
@Sp33dyD3m0n - What's coming out of the stack is only water vapor, not smoke. And unlike diesels that have a fixed horsepower and torque rating, a good fireman and engineer can eek an immense amount of power out of a steam locomotive. They're like people in the sense that I might be able to get more out of you than somebody else. I guarantee you that #475 has more power to give than the diesel that Strasburg owns and is ideal for this job.
In my country has no snow, just in the south, but very little. It's amazing working with this equipment is to be truly amazed, but at the same time I find beautiful. In the USA the rail work is taken seriously and has a very large value. Here in Brazil now after almost fifty years of neglect is that they are revitalizing the railways. For rquanto only freight trains. We believe that one day remember the passenger trains. Still only congratulate the American railroad.
yes, but those videos show diesel locomotives with more horses under the hood. Im just talking about Strasburg. And all Strasburg had at that time was a 44 tonner, which is horrible in snow. At least that much snow. And their 800 hp diesel was in the shop. If it were available, they'd have used the SW8. But since that wasn't an option, they had to use steam.
@paul8246 Modern diesel electric locomotives are limited in that when you are at full throttle thats everything its got. All the torque and power is being used. A steam locomotive has infinite amounts of torque, the more steam and coal you provide the more torque you have. not to mention superior traction.
that would be an awesome sight for the Amtrack rider to see an old steam engine pushing a snow plow! ive been on this line many times i have gone the past few summers and i love it every time i go there
@wwrr98 I'd hate to inform you about the fact that it is smoke and steam together as the steam exhaust from the driving cylinders are blown over the fire to get more power in the boiler.....
I remember watching this, I live less than 10 minutes away and was snowed in for 4 days, was quite fun zipping around on unplowed roads on 3-4 wheelers though, you could see the steam and snow flying in the air from Georgetown easily
I love this video i have been going to strasburg since i was a kid my question is why do they push the plow from the rear of the engine in reverse instead of pushing it from the front
@wwrr98 I hate to be the one to inform you of this...But coal doesn't put out smoke when its burnt. That is merely the exhaust from the engines. Google it
the locomotive in this video was built in 1906 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. and it's actually a 4-8-0, not a 2-8-0. but to answer your question, yes the locomotive is a Baldwin engine.
Wow! Great job of filming with such high quality. I also believe that steam trains will come back. I used to wonder how train tracks stayed so clear of snow, and now I know. I hope you all had a nice hot meal after standing out there in what looks like bitter cold!
@wwrr98 economics is a win for the diesel, but power per unit is much less especially on strasburg. #475 has considerably for power availiable than strasburg's largest diesel, and this is ajob that requires solid brute strength
It is, but every railroad needs a diesel. All passenger trains are steam powered though. The freight and yard switching is mainly done with the diesel though.
@wwrr98 ...around 30-45 mph. Have you ever heard the saying that..a steamer can pull a train it cant start, and a diesel can start a train it cant pull..? I'm a steam fan myself, and will always be a supporter of steam power. But i'm afraid if 8618 (or whatever it's number is) was ready and serviceable it would've been a better choice for tacking the snow....(besides i would hate to see 475 damaged while plowing snow....)
@paul8246 The steam engine can produce more power especial Torque by changing the length of the steam piston stroke. The diesel \ electric locomotive is going to put out what it rated. The other thing is the steam engine will likely be heavier than the diesel lastly you don't have to worry about a Steam train sucking in snow where a diesel engine can actually be choke out if snow packs the engine air intake. This can damage the engine and affect horsepower output
That was spectacular! Seeing you using your steam engine and old plows the way they were designed is heart warming. Our old rail museum is slowly rusting away as the lines and trestles are pulled up or deemed unsafe. We have an old spreader / flange that was built in michigan, along with a similar plow, but they haven't moved in inch in almost thirty years.
Wow, awesome video, Steven! Thumbs up and favorite! It really was brutal winter. 475 was really pushing hard. I thought it would take a little longer than that, though.
wow only one word fit this video: AWESOME i would really love to have some of those still photo that was taken there as wallpaper on my PC thanks for sharing
good to see these grand old ladies used for what they were built for, not just a show piece in a museum
At first I saw Strasburg and thought, no one there told me a lot of snow in Strasbourg France - then I realized, what strange weather everywhere. Beautiful blue sky and sharp contracts, why oh why do 17 miseries dislike this. Thanks for the upload, great !!
@TVRM610 90 was out for he annual inspection. It usually goes out in the winter. 475 is pretty powerful, too.
I usually go to Strasburg with my family every summer., and the latest I've ever been there was October. I stil lwanna go down there in the middle of winter sometime, from what i can tell, it's quite a sight.

Excellent video and hats off the folks who operate AND maintain these beautiful locomotives and equipment.
God bless you all.
Man, I'm not much of a train person, but I always find these steam engines to be just awesome to watch :D Great video!
the door on the metroliner cab car was completly filled in..awsome!!...and its great to see the 2-10-0 on the plow..great vid!!
what a wonderful job you did on this video, so many cool things here, the snow, the plowing, the whistles. you were a little out of breath at 3:50 from trudging thru the snow to get to a better spot, and we appreciate it.
I got to ride that train for my visit down there...There is a great little hotel/motel there where all the rooms are conductor cars on tracks! Lovely area and great steam age museum (many many trains to see)
Thank you, I live about half an hour from Strasburg, and am proud of our local historical sites.
Great Video. The plow hitting those deep drifts was fantastic. The fine folks at Strasburg Railroad know how to run a railroad and how great the equipment looked as well. Top Score 100% !
Words cannot describe how awesome this is!
WOW! What a thrill! Until today, I've only seen still photos of steamers plowing snow. This was an event NOT to be missed! Wish I'd been there in person to see the action! Thank you so much for posting this video of real live RR snowplowing excitement! Fantastic, and saved to favorites!

What a joy to hear an old steam engine and whistle again. Thank you.
Wow, that must have been exciting to see the old Russel Snow Plow in action. I get up to Strasburg about twice a year to ride the trail. Never been there in the winter though. Thanks for the great video!
fantastic video thanks so much for being knee deep in the snow to bring us it
Really cool video! Best snowplow action scenes. Great countryside. Thank you for showing!
You know, I was just on that line yesterday. Old 475 pulled my train. This is just awesome to see. Great filming!
A beautiful video. I enjoyed watching very much. Thank you for posting.
It is amazing to see the consolidation working so hard....great video
Great Video, The power of steam and proper equipment. Love it
Nice little horn battle with Amtrak there!
I so wanted to be off of work for this, but it just didn't happen. Thanks for getting a great video so the rest of us can see what transpired! 5*!
Thank god someone is shooting video. I thought I was the last one on the planet to shoot trains with HI Def video. Great job. That is one awesome engine!
Beautiful video and scenery!!, that Consolidation sure has some tractiion in that snow, plus a good Hogger as well!!
Thanks for posting!
Cool! Nice that they had 475 up, maintained and ready to go!!
@wwrr98 Yes, the colour is from the coal smoke but the great majority of what comes out of the chimney of a steam loco is actually steam.
@radionut63 yes, this plow does indeed have an out flaring flange. as for the steam locomotive, it has more power than the diesel locomotives.
@Sp33dyD3m0n - What's coming out of the stack is only water vapor, not smoke. That was so cool...to see a steam locomotive doing a job in today's digital world, is simply cool...thanks much for posting...

Fantastic footage. Thank you for posting!
Couldn't agree more. Like said somewhere in here, 8618 was getting truck work at the time, and the 44 tonner wouldn't be able to do it.
Awesome. I've literally watched hundreds of rail snow removal videos on youtube and the web. This is number one. Awesome.
Nice!!! so much low end torque!
Excellent video.
Very great job.
Love the video... thanks for sharing.. we always see the railroad when its nice out never in the snow but, that was very cool to see... thanks

awesome video. That second shot was amazing.
Very cool. Thanks for posting.

Very impressive!!! Really enjoyed this video.
Pretty impressive to watch. Nice shots! :)
Great video. You sure get extreme snowstorms in the U.S.
How good is this. this is one of the best y tube videos ever.
Awesome K5LA/ steam wistle horn duel!
nothing like some winter videos to cool down to!
Impressive it just plows through the snow very quickly. Alot faster than the rotary snow plows that are more modern.
Beautiful images!
greetings from Hungary
@radionut63 He isright but not all Russellsnowplows were equipped with flangers underneath. The oldest ones were very simple
@wwrr98 I'd hate to inform you about the fact that it is smoke and steam together as the steam exhaust from the driving cylinders are blown over the fire to get more power in the boiler.....
Brilliant Video!!
That's just awesome footage!
Wonderful. thank you for posting.
Excuse me while i pick my jaw up off the floor. The shot at about 1:30 of them blowing through the snow bank was particularly spectacular.
Now that's a great sight! Steam and a plow! Thanks for posting this. :-)
Very Cool Video! Nice Catch!
I remember watching this, I live less than 10 minutes away and was snowed in for 4 days, was quite fun zipping around on unplowed roads on 3-4 wheelers though, you could see the steam and snow flying in the air from Georgetown easily
Good video.
Awesome! Great video!
This had to be in February 2010. I live in York Pa. and the area had two 20"+ snowstorms in a weeks time. When did you shoot this?
Great work - Great subject. Steam & Snow
great stuff... I wish I lived in the steam days and my dad would of been a conductor... steam horn and steam train is the best sounds on earth..
I love this video i have been going to strasburg since i was a kid my question is why do they push the plow from the rear of the engine in reverse instead of pushing it from the front
Cool video man, thanks for posting! Like the steamers!
Sure is a sweet piece to see!
Very nice, thank you.
boy do i agree ,,,, they used to say nothing stops a steam engine ,,, i grew up with steam trains in my back yard ,, saw them pull unreal loads
The N&W 475 must be pretty strong without doing any wheel slipping unless it had on the sander the hole time ?? :)
Wow! That is just spectacular!
Now that is the way to plow snow
I loved to watch it! Beautiful! Whata wheather! But don't they use the snow fences for the winter time in open fields in that area?
cool vid i love them old steam engines great job
Yes, 2. A GE 44 tonner and an EMD SW8.
excellent video, thank you.
Interesting. After 1 inch of snow the whole traffic, including trains stops moving in Belgium.
powah of steam... nothing beats it!
@wwrr98 I hate to be the one to inform you of this...But coal doesn't put out smoke when its burnt. That is merely the exhaust from the engines. Google it

you would think that they would knock off all that snow on the plow every once in awhile so it can slice thru drifts better.
@wwrr98 ...around 30-45 mph. Have you ever heard the saying that..a steamer can pull a train it cant start, and a diesel can start a train it cant pull..? WOW that's really cool you don't see that anymore.
amazing video! thanks!
nice i really enjoyed this

Yea, it is the interchange between the Strasburg railroad and Amtrak.
Wow, awesome video, Steven! Thumbs up and favorite! It really was brutal winter. 475 was really pushing hard. I thought it would take a little longer than that, though.
@wwrr98 There is an old saying: "A diesel locomotive can start a train it can't pull and a steam locomotive can pull a train it cannot start."
I see they restored #475 to it's N&W Paint Job, and I also figured they would use #90 seeing as it is bigger and should be more powerful.
The Strasburg RAIL ROAD always does it the right way!
very cool!
wow only one word fit this video: AWESOME
i would really love to have some of those still photo that was taken there as wallpaper on my PC
thanks for sharing
