paul plays guitar very well paul does not brag paul doesn't make other guitar players feel bad(intentionally) paul is humble paul is great be like paul
Paul Gilbert continues to be a great guitar ambassador. always giving back to the community. from his earliest videos, he incorporates humor and fun . while some guitarists are reluctant to share tips "tricks" short us or discoveries and realizations, Paul has always given back, empowering generation of guitarists. this guy truly inspires. always been and always will be a fan of his.
I met Paul 34 years ago at a guitar clinic. He was the nicest guy. They had a raffle, and I won a pleather Ibanez jacket. I wore that thing until it literally fell apart. I removed the Ibanez patch and have it to this day...💚🎸
Paul is literally the best man. I love his stories on how he got going, all upstrokes made me laugh my head off haha. He is just the nicest guy ever and the most bitching humble guitar player. Rock on Paul you'll always be one of my favorites brother!!
Simply AMAZING! How a modest guitar player can explain difficult or rough complex music in a way that I, a Venezuelan, a Latin-american, can understand so easy. It inspires me to grab my guitar and play for a long while and keep other responsibilities away. God bless to this guy and his wisdom. Thank you Paul.
One of the most unique music videos I’ve ever seen, and I’ve watched so many. Paul is humble, hysterical, and hugely talented, passionate about his craft. I’m stunned by his enthusiasm, wit, intelligence, musicality, he’s turned out to be so much more than just some shredder guy. I’m just truly impressed, amazed, appreciative. My humble thanks Mr Gilbert
Such a joy to listen to him, watch him, trying to explode every note with fearless creativity and a teenager's enthusiasm which is hard to keep these days...
The sum of all music is a forest of frequency and you wonder in the forest until you find a beautiful flower, then mimic it's passion, its symmetry, its perfection:)
I really like this guy, he's got a really nice character about him. I can listen to him talk about music all day NO FUCKING WAY that part with the drill was unreal!
The drummer and bassist look so damn happy to be there...lol. You can tell by the looks on their faces that, BOTH of them are NOT happy...AT ALL...lol. Always love watching Paul play...We came from a great time in music didn't we? Cheers, J
Always a pleasure to watch Paul Gilbert. One of my heros. I'm more of a cleanish player, but Pauls playing made me feel comfortable listen and play overdriven guitar. I was asking myself why? Because he he always has a very melodious playing and he is just a humble person.
Did anybody else notice when the whole band starts playing Steppenwolfs 'Born to be Wild' solo, my GOD, it sounds almost EXACTLY like Alex Lifeson's solo from Working Man, its fucking insane!!!!! What a phenomenal soloist, just mind boggling!! :)
Great! Perfect session. Paul is so down to earth and humble. I like grew up with him doing awesome. Huge inspiration for me and us all. Just a really good person, I would like to see him try Bluegrass.
This is great, because I remember the video with Steve Vai doing this exact thing, and he says, "You guys have a really great player here right now, what's his name?", and the audience says, "Paul Gilbert", and Steve says, "Great stuff, man. Keep it up, you're going places". (paraphrasing)
HE IS exactly LIKE ME., if I was t the best, I quit. BUT THEN I had this ability to play instrument at very fast pace. This is my life, I am not the best, but I will ALWAYS PRACTICE SO I WILL be the greatest.
👏👏. I was somewhat natural in my teens, Nirvana got me started, then the Beatles, Zep, etc. I took lessons, could read music well. Started getting more into it it more. Got fast. He's still the best over ever heard as far as a PURE natural. He was doing stuff at 15 that was insane. We had some small bands here and there. The older crowed had some amazing ones. Man the 90s were such a time for bands Then had some side tracks in life. To say the least. And nothing mattered. No interests. Things happen unfortunately. And I got off course. I'm lucky I'm here and happy about it obviously. But if I put that wasted time into being a player, who knows. I have regrets. I'm like that. Funny I remember me and my father who I just lost to Covid this year, buying an selling guitars before the internet was huge and everyone knew everything. Back then you could find a treasure in a old lady's attic. We bought and sold alot of stuff. Was so fun. Tried getting back into it in my 30s. Remembered some simple songs. Can't read music anymore which is crazy, but hey we have tabs. And it didn't stick again. Now I'm going for it again. I always have owned a guitar, but didn't dedicate late as I said. . Well I just sold everything, and put all the money towards getting a custom Martin sinker mahogany B&S, Addy top, hide glue, d18 made. And I'm looking forward to this custom more than anything and refuse to waste it. I can still play and pick up things by hearing them somewhat, but it's sort of a start over to get back to my roots and use tbe talent I know I have. I never got there. I will. So I guess my story is I wish I always had practiced. I did when I was young. I was obsessed. And then didn't. Never too late to push yourself I guess.
Paul, just so you know friend, this is the DULLEST, most introverted crowd of (I'm assuming) new up and coming guitar players that ever simply did NOT have a clue as to who they were seeing, understand or 'get' humor (yeah, takes a BIG IQ to get good comedy, hah!) I've ever had the embarrassment to see!!! My friend, you were KILLING me with too many jokes and innuendo throughout this video to count!! And barely a titter from these zombies at best. Clueless and spoiled and small minded. You aren't loosing your ability to entertain, expand minds, be uproariously funny, inspire people to improve their selves and their playing. Simply put Paul, you ROCK amigo!! Thank you for all you continue to give, and thank you MIT for being nice and generous enough to share this w/o $$$, that is a extremely rarer and rarer kindness of late . . . .
In my opinion Paul is in the top 10 greatest Rock Guitarists.. Back when he was in Mr Big, they were the Tightest Band Around. Each Member was a Master at whatever they played. Even Eric was a Fantastic Vocalist.... Thanks for posting this video with Paul Gilbert......
@ 2:20.., PREACH!!! I was JUST thinking about that as I listened to that song earlier TODAY, and I think of that chord every time I hear that arpeggio. That damn Burt Bacharach! So glad to hear someone else, someone with credibility at that, notice that.
Never the less. I aprreciate- U are one Guitar Heroes. Mr. Big Will stay as one as the biggest. TH you to you and crazy Bhillie Sheann. You guys started a new aproach at the 90´s.
I like how he points out shuffles as a rhythmic place in musical time, abstract as they are in theory they play in an area worth being conscious of, lots of options appear when you create a shufle, instead of unkowingly syncopating without noticing what's causing the count to blend in several directions, actually fascinating stuff to have on lock mentally
I've always wondered if Paul's misstep of initially playing only upstrokes is the key to his amazing virtuosity. Al Di Meola recommends something a bit similar in his picking book. He says to practice each line with only downstrokes, then only upstrokes, then alternate. Al also started as a percussionist. So, maybe there is something to the theory of having equal strength in both upstroke and down strokes to achieve great virtuosity. Anyone care to share their thoughts on this?
If what's holding back your virtuosity is that you're too slow of a picker, then this would surely help. It seems to me that note choice, chord tones, etc are far more important for the average player. But for true virtuosi, *_*everything*_* is important.
My vibrato hero: Eric Clapton! He's the first guitarist I really paid attention to for technique. Stevie Ray Vaughan was the second but quickly became my favorite.
Been a massive fan of PG , I loved the waem up section with all the UPSTROKES. I´m dealing with some wrist arthritis - lost some of my picking technique - this will definitely help.
If anyone is doubtful I’m here to say, I used the prince of tone as my main overdrive in a working band for years so I know it inside and out. As an owner of the duke of tone I can now say this is basically identical in tone and function. It is so close in fact that the one minor thing I disliked( the bright tone control) is the same! I have it set almost off just as I did with the prince…that said I Love this pedal and MXR and AM did a fantastic job I’m blown away..
Sweet goodness, is this what class is like at MI!? I should have switched schools/majors, we barely touched on the D melodic minor scale in my orgo class, let alone having Paul shred for a few hours!
hi sir paul gilbert... by the way im liezel im a big fan of yours and mr. big... im also the cousin of haruhisa duran naito one of your students. we always play ur mr.big songs... god bless u always... hope to meet you to also
Paul was my instructor in 86 hi Paul I remember you teaching me not licks but theory you asked me my favorite influence I said Mike Campbell you said not a shredder is he but what feel, he has that was it. I remember stating to you once “the problem with Eddie VH which I love, is that he spawned a legion of mindless noodlers” so to hear you say this I’ll repeat Mike Campbell lol god bless you Paul hope all is well, I was there during this period. It’s about songs and songwriting
The performance of "While My Guitar" blows that "All Star" performance with Prince and Jeff Lynne etc, thats on here. My "vibrato hero" was Leslie West!
I love Paul Gilbert. "Ballad of the Last Lions" is my personal theme song of hope and of positive thinking!! I just wanted to share a little something - on the subject of light strings, I have normal sized hands, but with shorter/smaller fingers than average. Reverend Willy's .007 gauge strings - along with shorter-scale and/or skinny neck guitars, have made all the difference in whether or not I was going to give up playing. If it helps just one person like myself, try those options before depriving yourself of the incredible joy of playing guitar!! For years, I tried to make my hands conform to the bigger guitars, feeling that I was inadequate somehow. But lighter strings and a black beauty of a Jackson Dinky Minion changed all that!! Even my beloved skinny-neck Fender MIJ Strat left me limited in the first five positions (within reason - I just couldn't do some of the really cool stuff). But that Jackson saved my sanity. There are also some vintage Gibson, Fender, and other brands you can find that are short scale and of high quality. 7's and smaller guitars ROCK!! Someday, I'll put some killer DiMarzio's in that Minion - but for now, all that matters is that I don't feel so limited as a small-handed player.
I'm right there with ya... I lost the use of my left middle finger (fretting hand) and when I was learning clean Country lead and chicken pickin, with all those whole step + bends, I switched to .07s, and ESPECIALLY on my Bullet Mustang (short scale), it did make a HUGE difference... Unfortunately, without an EXTREMELY light touch, everything (including CHORDS) fretted goes SHARP, lol... so, I moved UP to 8.5s, and they work great for me... I call 'em "Almost 9s", lol... ALMOST as easy to bend, and they STAY in tune, lol...
Paul is just great he seems like a personable chap, and always has really cool (and funny) stories to share. I'm trying to work up the nerve to sign up for his online lessons (keep trying to tell myself "It's OK you can make mistakes" and then another ,evil, voice says "but You'll embarrass yourself,,," typical guitar player "disease" I guess). I'd love to take a 1on 1 in person lessons or hell even a group lessons would work too. Anyone wanna start a crowd fund for that ?? Seriously !! The group lessons I mean, though I'd take contributions .... : )
So funny he used to drive a pink convertible I remember Paul he lived in my apartment building with Satchel of Steel Panther! Russ Parrish ! 😂 LOL! When I was at MI it was just a few blocks away walk! Then I moved back to San Francisco Bay area and started vocal lessons with Judy Davis Vocal coach in Oakland and Music Engineering at SFSU Judy Davis also taught Eric Martin of Mr Big! I'm addicted to that Rush!
1:16:50 WOW ! I have never seen Paul Play the blues this way ... I think he melted all of his styles to create his own blues style .. and it sounds darn good..Check it OUT !!
This came on randomly while I was sleeping. I had no idea that he could play like this. I wish that they put a little reverb on the snare and vocal though.
19:06 "the music that I grew up with and really love is not at all what I'm known for" -- I've been thinking recently about how the music that MY guitar heroes grew up listening to is not at all what their music sounds like NOR is it what I enjoy listening to. And even in myself, the music that I create often doesn't sound like my biggest musical influences. It's weird how inspiration and musical expression work like that.
This for Shamino1 (emphasis on 'Sham'). Paul has gotten Smarter & hasevolved in his chosen Craft, yes, Craft. Which you have obviously Failedto grasp a hold of. I commend Mr. Gilbert on this video & appearance alone, he has shown me what & where I have been lacking about justPlaying in general.
Has Paul Gilbert gotten slower or have I gotten faster? A deep and philosophical concept to contemplate as I practice my 5-note-per-string progressions.
+Luiz Pires I think he's gotten to a point in his career where he can do whatever he wants and have fun. He's pleasing himself musically first and seeing if others fall in line...... And they do. It's funny because if anyone was to jam with him and try to show him up he will still play the most terrifying things known to man. He's still got it
41:12 this is a HUGE pointer to mega speed picking. Paul has great strength in his up-picking hence the 49:50 warmup he demonstrates later. Play with Hetfield style ferocity with UP-PICKS...
paul plays guitar very well
paul does not brag
paul doesn't make other guitar players feel bad(intentionally)
paul is humble
paul is great
be like paul
+Rishabh Kumar be like paul
*paul plays like a god
Paul is the very definition of"Class"not to mention he is among the top 10 guitarists of all time
paul for president
True, 'cause Paul is Legendary, and we can never be like Paul.

I feel the same way. Paul is the man.
I met Paul 34 years ago at a guitar clinic. He was the nicest guy. They had a raffle, and I won a pleather Ibanez jacket. I wore that thing until it literally fell apart. I removed the Ibanez patch and have it to this day...💚🎸
Epic!^^^

It’s taken me about an hour to watch 26 minutes of this video because I have to listen to every song he mentions! What a fun, music lovin dude!
Paul Gilbert is without a question the coolest nerd on the planet.
How many times have I watched this? Now it's therapy.
Being at this clinic was the coolest experience I had at MI, I can't wait to go back
Paul is literally the best man. I love his stories on how he got going, all upstrokes made me laugh my head off haha. He is just the nicest guy ever and the most bitching humble guitar player. Rock on Paul you'll always be one of my favorites brother!!

👍 like. I agree 110%
Paul is on fire. He's one of the 3 greatest.
Thank you so much for sharing this, it's always so good to listen Paul Gilbert sharing his stories and musicality, man you made my day.
He has come full circle. Very wise and mature guitar player now.
I like that he still has those chops and that extra gear he can go to, that many other mature guitar players cannot.
Candid-

The sum of all music is a forest of frequency and you wonder in the forest until you find a beautiful flower, then mimic it's passion, its symmetry, its perfection:)
This guy is such an inspiration. Always learning, always grounded, always funny, still playing.
This is fantastic. That slow-burn jazzy number was great.
Guitar god + Amazing teacher + Humble human being = PAUL GILBERT !!!!
This is such a valuable presentation. Paul has such a great attitude/approach towards music, and he communicates it so well. Very grateful. Thanks.
He's D man !!!!
I really like this guy, he's got a really nice character about him. I can listen to him talk about music all day
NO FUCKING WAY that part with the drill was unreal!
The drummer and bassist look so damn happy to be there...lol. You can tell by the looks on their faces that, BOTH of them are NOT happy...AT ALL...lol.
Always love watching Paul play...We came from a great time in music didn't we?

Holy chit. e took the time to watch this! This guy plays perfectly and I learned a lot. Big thumbs for posting !!👍🏽 👍🏽 👍🏽
Paul Gilbert is such a great musician and has influenced me to always keep practicing!
·I've got blisters on me fingers!!!
What a find. A brilliant interview of a brilliant artist. This is fantastic. Paul Gilbert is an incredible talent.
Paul is a great guy and a great guitar player, he is actually in my personal top 10
Technique, chops, musical knowledge, and excellent tones. Paul is a monster player !
Boy I can hear that as parts of a soundtrack on a hit movie that’s full of anticipation and excitement! Great composition.
Always a pleasure to watch Paul Gilbert. One of my heros.
I'm more of a cleanish player, but Pauls playing made me feel comfortable listen and play overdriven guitar. I was asking myself why? Because he he always has a very melodious playing and he is just a humble person.
An actual virtuoso in my opinion, there aren‘t very many of them even on this incredibly popular instrument.
Man I'm a 80s metal freak but Paul made me cry when he stroke that chord of Walk on By. Simply timeless.
Caught yer Covid show at the Iridium with 3 friends who were “uninitiated”. They are now in the tribe. Thanks for bringing the music.
Wow!! Really loved hearing Paul's take on the Blues...👍
Got fast. Electric, but then mostly acoustic. Learned the hard way pushing myself on acoustic.
I was always the best amongst my group of friends, besides one guy I knew who made me say Wow. He's still the best over ever heard as far as a PURE natural. He was doing stuff at 15 that was insane. We had some small bands here and there. The older crowed had some amazing ones. Man the 90s were such a time for bands
Then had some side tracks in life.
Cost wise, yeah maybe I don't deserve it as a player, but I still have that ear for music and I'm gonna go hard this time. I'm now 40.
32:37 that Shawn Lane impression was spot on!
Love this guy such a fabulous teacher
Thank you for all you continue to give, and thank you MIT for being nice and generous enough to share this w/o $$$, that is a extremely rarer and rarer kindness of late . . . .
This why he is so GREAT He is aMUSICIAN not just a Shredder
In my opinion Paul is in the top 10 greatest Rock Guitarists.. Back when he was in Mr Big, they were the Tightest Band Around. Each Member was a Master at whatever they played. Even Eric was a Fantastic Vocalist.... Thanks for posting this video with Paul Gilbert......
Paul is amazing as always. That ending was epic!
He is a good singer too I love it.. Amazing.. Paul Gilbert is my top 1 guitarist .
@ 2:20.., PREACH!!! I was JUST thinking about that as I listened to that song earlier TODAY, and I think of that chord every time I hear that arpeggio. That damn Burt Bacharach! So glad to hear someone else, someone with credibility at that, notice that.
Great solo on Born to be wild! I was thinking of the Rock bottom solo (U.F.O)
Thank you soooo much for sharing all these incredible stories, very inspiring.
He 's so happy when he finds a pick at 11:27 .
When I bought Paul's terrifying guitar trip instructional video in 1999, I was like whoa this guy is the best technical guitarist in rock period.
Never the less. I aprreciate- U are one Guitar Heroes. Mr. Big Will stay as one as the biggest.
TH you to you and crazy Bhillie Sheann. You guys started a new aproach at the 90´s.
Wow, besides being a shred god he is also a living jukebox, what an amazing guy
Paul gilbert is the name of love...love for guitar synonyms love for paul also....
Lemon Song, after the drum solo, Paul's downward run trance. Totally wicked awesome!!!! Definitely one of my favorite guitarists.

+Mike Wallace Guitar Slinger you might be onto something stay chill bro
The key is x note per string patterns and pickslanting. This is what enables virtuosity
If what's holding back your virtuosity is that you're too slow of a picker, then this would surely help. It seems to me that note choice, chord tones, etc are far more important for the average player. But for true virtuosi, *_*everything*_* is important.
Some guitarists prefer up strokes when hitting bends on the high e
his singing has improved
And continues to.
It's because I believe that Eric Martin may have coached him from the great Judy Davis Vocal coach!
My vibrato hero: Eric Clapton! He's the first guitarist I really paid attention to for technique. Stevie Ray Vaughan was the second but quickly became my favorite.
After watching to Hendrix now. Yeah, YOU BAD!!! Impressed. Cheers!
Cool when he throws the Green-Tinted Sixties Mind lick into While My Guitar Gently Weeps.👍Paul having fun!
Been a massive fan of PG , I loved the waem up section with all the UPSTROKES. I´m dealing with some wrist arthritis - lost some of my picking technique - this will definitely help.
The born to be wild solo that Paul plays reminds me a lot Michael Schenker rock bottom .. its very cool
+1 for playing the Lemon Song :) a big time fav.
And heck yeah, you are fantastically great at guitar things too, for real!!
I would give anything in this world to play with paul....that would be a wish come true....
That blues jam at the 1:58-1:59 mark was awesome great clarity on those notes Paul, kinda reminiscent of Gary moore.

There needs to be a muppet movie with Kermit as a guitar shredder. Paul should do the voice :D
Paul Gilbert is like the Keanu reeves of the music industry… it’s hard not to love him
The performance of "While My Guitar" blows that "All Star" performance with Prince and Jeff Lynne etc, thats on here. My "vibrato hero" was Leslie West!
Well Paul,No Matter What by Bad Finger is my favourite song of all time!!!

Thats why i love paul gilbert
Nice, I had not seen this. From metal to 'Walk on By'. I had some simple Bacharach music back in the day in print. "Do you know the..." :-)
1:16:50 WOW ! I have never seen Paul Play the blues this way ... I think he melted all of his styles to create his own blues style .. and it sounds darn good..Check it OUT !!
What an awesome human.
i am glad i have got to know you, master.
This came on randomly while I was sleeping. I had no idea that he could play like this. I wish that they put a little reverb on the snare and vocal though.
Kudos too the drummer and bass player 😊😊
Paul is a human juke box 🤟🏻
19:06 "the music that I grew up with and really love is not at all what I'm known for" -- I've been thinking recently about how the music that MY guitar heroes grew up listening to is not at all what their music sounds like NOR is it what I enjoy listening to. And even in myself, the music that I create often doesn't sound like my biggest musical influences. It's weird how inspiration and musical expression work like that.
1:29:13 I think it's a largley a whole tone scale but a halfstep in there.
Amazing guitar player has great tone especially liked red house
Has Paul Gilbert gotten slower or have I gotten faster? A deep and philosophical concept to contemplate as I practice my 5-note-per-string progressions.
+Shamino1 Your avatar makes this comment approximately a hundred times better.
I think he's tired of playing the same shit
+Shamino1 i used to like him way back too... seems to he's simplified his playing in all aspects. his tone is not as good too.
Ha ha ha now I play along with Barracuda using all up picks
dang... that's very Rock Bottom solo.....love it!
