My first lever gun was a shortened (16 1/4") magnaported 1895 45/70. Forty years later still my go to gun for tromping in the Alaska bush.
Handy in the canoe and on the hike.
I'll never sell or trade it. Definitely an heirloom.

I loved my 1895 Marlin. My dad had a Phelps 45-70 revolver that I would carry in the mountains but it was a first year productions that he bought in 1977. I really didn't want to take the chance of beating it up. This was is 1998 and I was working at a gun shop/shoot range. A used Marlin came around so I bought it. It was a slight problem I had most my check was going for antique firearms. It was the best mountain Firearms I have ever had.

A venerable caliber. Hits with authority with moderate recoil. My Marlins have proven their accuracy time and again. The Springfield trapdoor carbine was chambered in this caliber nearly 150 years ago.
Can be scoped, peep sights, buckhorn sights. A barkeep’s friend to help keep the peace in the establishment as well.
I have a 336 in S.S. polished up to mirror finish with beautiful walnut wood fittings.
In my 45/70 have loaded IMR 4227 but muzzle flash was excessive. IMR 3031 proved more user friendly. 350 grain hollow points showing good stopping power at 2000+ feet per second.

I got one years ago as a birthday present. Installed a big loop, a Williams peep sight and leave the aperture out of the peep sight for quick target acquisition. The front handguard was too thick and clunky, So I belt sanded it thinner. I also installed a curved brass butt plate as well as a brass follower and brass plated the front handguard cap. I removed the cross bolt safety and replaced it with the special made bolt. I sanded off the stock checkering and applied 4 coats of hand rubbed linseed oil. It holds 8 + 1. It is sighted in for 100 Yds. and it has a flip up receiver sight set for 300. It goes in the coffin with me.

A lot of lever gun enthusiasts may not know that the ultimate 45-70 lever gun is one that is not talked about too much!! It is the Marlin 1895 Cowboy action model. I own one I bought in 2019 brand new made by Remington. Yes it took Remington around six years before they were able to perform their expertise in producing excellent Marlin lever guns. At the time Remington assumed Marlin in Connecticut the disgruntled former employees sabotaged the antiquated machine tools and destroyed most if not all the schematics and process sheets needed to produce the firearms!! But from 2011 approximately Remington bought new modern machine tools and within 5 to 6 years they mastered the Marlin lever gun!! All this Remlin baloney naysayers were blabbing about was hogwash. Even before Remington got it right with the firearms they were producing they were very personable, easily accessible, and guaranteed any Marlin lever gun for life. They were willing to make it right with any lever gun they sold. Like I said I bought mine in 2019 and by that time Remington was making history!! My 1895 Cowboy action model, beautiful dark walnut butt stock and forearm, 18 1/2 inch octagonal barrel with Ballard rifling, semi buckhorn rear sight and standard post front sight, 6+1 rounds for the tubular magazine. This model Marlin lever gun is the best of both worlds. It can fire one of the Hornady Leverevolution 325 grain FTX hollowpoint rounds up to a mile!! There is virtually no difference in velocity out of the 18 1/2 inch barrel as opposed to the 26” barrel on the Cowboy model. The Cowboy action model having a nice home defense length barrel is great for hunting, range shooting or home defense. It is very flaickable in close quarters. The lever action on my Remington made Marlin is perfect. It does not have the toy like mamby pamby feel of a Henry made lever gun!! It is just the right resistance and after applying a little Barristol gun oil the action was smooth as silk!! Out of the box my rifle shot 5 consecutive bullseyes from 75 feet without touching the rear sight. If you look and see the wonderful variety of Marlin lever guns Remington made with the finest quality ever seen before you do not know what you are missing!! If you can still find one of the Remington 2019 Marlin 1895 Cowboy action models, the 1895 CBA in 45-70 government you should purchase it immediately because I do not believe you will ever find a better made lever gun in your lifetime!! It is the most wonderful Marlin lever gun I have ever had the pleasure to shoot!! This JM fanboy club has nothing to do with quality!!
