    Imagine if the Steelers had tried to get Montana and got him Montana most likely would’ve gotten to the Super Bowl in 1994 vs the 49ers instead of the Chargers beating the Steelers that year

    I'm 47 and a lifelong 49ers fan, so of course I remember this like yesterday. When we list the greatest players ever from any team sport, it's tricky. To me, when gauging a team player's talent, it's much more nuanced than pure numbers. No matter how much I try to explain, this isn't going to be a popular opinion, so I'll put it like this. If I could pick Montana in his prime or Young in his prime, I'd go with Young. He was just as accurate, more so going deep and was fire when scrambling. I'd still put Montana above Young on a greatest ever list, because accomplishments have to mean something. I hope all that made sense.

    • @melbro62
      @melbro62 ปีที่แล้ว

      and Joe beat Young in head to head, of course we know it is a team game, but Joe was a winner and a great leader. Tough resilience that the QBs today wouldn't or do have.

    • @guybroyles48
      @guybroyles48 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@melbro62 I don't know about that "players these days" thing. Everyone sees things from their own perspective. I have no reason to think that current players like Russel Wilson, Matthew Stafford, Matt Ryan, and others aren't good leaders. Players have gotten bigger, stronger, and faster, that's a fact. Some folks like to say they were tougher, better leaders and ect back in the day, but you can't measure or quantify that stuff, so it's a judgment call.

    • @melbro62
      @melbro62 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guybroyles48 You have good points there but I can tell you the rules for the modern QBs where you can barely hit them without a penalty . I played QB back in the 60's and they would knock the Sh.... out of us and if they could would drive you into the ground. Joe Montana was as tough as anyone ever. He has had several surgeries and is still having surgeries from his playing days. And speaking of bigger, stronger, faster, Drew Brees barely hit 6-0 and others also like that. The trend was for a long time (straight pocket passers) to be at least 6-2 or more is changing. Kyler Murray barely 5-10.

    I turned to my coworker who was a season ticket holder, and who I am stiil very good friends with, and said; that if I had season tickets and Montana wasn't going to be the starting QB and possibly traded I would sell my tickets.

      The Phoenix Cardinals changed their name to Arizona Cardinals after the 1993 season (one year after the Montana trade rumors/offers). Teams have done that to appeal to a larger geographical area - the New England Patriots, for example, began as the "Boston Patriots".
