  • How to change the oil on a Honda Civic. Honda Civic Oil Change (1996-2000). In this video I show how to change the engine oil on a Honda Civic. Changing the oil on a Civic is a good Honda DIY project. The vehicle in this oil change video is a 2000 Honda Civic LX Sedan. 1996-2000 Honda Civic oil changes should be similar but the oil capacity will be slightly different due to the engine size.

    Dave a good video. Most important you must have the coffee while waiting for the oil to drain. Hope all is good with you and family. Changed front motor mount with A1 aftermarket a year ago just put in an OEM. Aftermarket stopped holding vacuum. It was junk. OEM costs more but you only change it once.also went with OEM radiator hoses and thermostat from Honda parts now and also PGMFI relay. Just staying busy under lockdown. Hope all is good Artie. Also bought the long serpentine belt tool from your account. Now to look and by more. Dave take care. ❤️

    Hey Big Dog, I have heard in the past that you always want to fill the oil filter with oil prior to screwing it on. Not sure what the reasoning behind that is but I've always done it that way. I'm guessing you don't think that's necessary or you would do it. Any opinion on if that's not a good idea or unnecessary?

    • @boots7859
      @boots7859 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My Dad was a pro- mechanic and serious 50-60's motorhead, and taught me that as well.
      After an oil change the top-end is running without oil flow for a short amount of time, probably a second or two if that while if flows through the system and filter purging air.
      Not sure it really matters as much on a normal oil change where the engine was just running and lubed up already, and as we have better oils. This might have been more prevelent when one was re-building an engine, or if an engine had been sitting unused for extended period of time, unknown provinence of engine, etc..
      I think old-timers might have spun the crank to get the air out and oil in as well.
      Also remember being told they would solve carbon buildup by running kerosene until exhaust got red hot.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nothing wrong with doing that but on this design you will most likely spill most of it out when installing it.

    • @kevinmiller4486
      @kevinmiller4486 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With the honda 1.6 motor you can add a small amount to the filter but not too much or it will spill out due to the horizontal orientation of the filter.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Idle on those older Civics is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM) through the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve, with input from various sensors including the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. The ECM adjusts the idle based on engine temperature (among other things). I would make sure the ECT is reporting correct temperature readings to engine computer (especially when hot) and I would probably make sure the IAT is also working properly too. The vehicle may have set some trouble codes like a P1508 or P0505.
