Honestly I thought TFT had a tolerable monetization scheme before treasure trove. I was fine spending a little for the chibi skins when it was eggs for chibis especially since the drop rate was higher, but after the drop rate nerf it feels way more gacha/monetarily hungry than before :(
In a gacha is is literally power the gacha is about, this is just a different chibi that you would use maybe 10 times and then switch back to your prefered tactician you always use anyway. I mean sure it sucks, but it's not comparable.

i think its better now since you dont have to buy it all at once. now you can take a few months and only buy the season passes and you dont lose all your progress towards the mythic one. to me it seems more friendly towards low spenders.

Riot seems to be confusing prestige with exclusivity as of late. Prestige is defined as "Inspiring [of] respect and admiration; having high status." Exclusive, meanwhile, is defined as "Restricted or limited to the person, group, or area concerned." The only kind of admiration that buying a $200 skin will get you is for how much you're willing to splurge on a chroma. Edit: we found the whales lol Edit 2: god damn the salt!
Prestige was meant to be exclusivity from the very beginning, Riot just realised that it can be even more "exclusive". When I said Riot realised, I mean they saw there are some people willing to spend even more money than they expected at first. The only difference is that, at first, it was meant to be exclusive but somewhat obtainable for everyone and now they want to go full exclusive mode.
I mean the difference between Prestige and Exclusive is already blurred, so in essence they're the same, there's like a very small percentage of players that already own at least one Prestige Skin.
Problem is, while the price tag indirectly makes these items exclusive for certain groups, it isn't actually exclusive to those groups. If you're *really* dedicated you can get it anyways
As someone that hasn't spend a dime on league since they introduce lootbox in the system, this is the result of the consumers being willing to buy everything they spit out to "collect" every skin of their favorite champion. It's not really an issue since at the end of the day, the people spending hundreds just to get a outfit for a digital char are the only one suffering.
Spending on just your favorite is okay. Imagine you're Ornn main. You can buy 3 skin. Or Kayn main. You can buy 5 and you'll get a new skin every 2 or 3 years. Problem is some people have mental problems like they feel like they have to buy every new skin.
I think spending some money on your fav champs after idk thousand of ours of free gameplay is pretty okay, lootboxes tho, never okay specially in a game that children can access

My only issue is that I am a HUGE League whale and even I didn't spend anything on the Jhin skin. I just couldn't rationalise it at all. It was so low effort.
everyday I'm bummed that LoR is so free to play. I truly wish the game could generate more revenue so we could get more guardians and boards and skins on a more rapid cadence. I love the game to death and the team is incredible. But man, sometimes it makes me sad that we're "too f2p for our own good." It stops people from even playing the game, for some reason

I have perhaps spent An Amount of money on league skins in the past, and I pride myself on having every single jhin skin and chroma possible. But I didnt even try to get the skin. The thing is that while money is certainly important in game development it is also very slippery slope once you start to do these kind of things. It can go very very wrong. I think the best way to cash in on the whales I've seen over the years is done by Jagex where they have completely different version of the same game (Runescape 3) where you can buy progress and MTX is a more common thing. RS3 plays that ''devil's advocate'' for RS community. Reason why I react to this case with Riot negatively is because the formula of ''big company'' + ''heavy monetization'' + ''F2P'' seems like that slippery slope in full action. You start with a loot box, you add a battle pass, you add insanely expensive chroma, you add another, another... And right here we can also see they are not afraid of doing it for each game they own and run under the Riot name. I guess runeterra is most untouched when it comes to MTX? I don't play it or follow it. But the fact they add these things, at least to me seems like a recipe for disaster. I've seen it many times where greed of company completely and utterly destroyes the game integrity (Nexon, all the korean MMOs, etc).
I'm already not a fan of the gacha/lootbox aspect of TFT considering League just lets you buy skins normally, but the fact we're getting over-priced prestige skins for chibis when we haven't even gotten a majority of the actual cast as Chibis, is wild. We could be appealing to more players of various champs... not just giving Yasuo more cosmetics like normal league...

my biggest problem with tft's monetization is the scaling back of free rewards. you used to get eggs with the free battle pass but now you only get the tokens for the gatcha, forcing people to interact with that system, and you dont even get enough tokens to roll until a bit into the battle pass.

Don't know if it's possible with how old the client is, but since it's a skin and doesn't change gameplay, you could just display it differently for every player. Removes the "flex" element though.

is comparing tft to genshin really valid, yes both have gacha but in Genshin you can unlock different playable characters that alter how you play, where as in tft you can only unlock cosmetics
As someone who owns a special chibi and the 100$ board (I was very depressed when I got both of these) I’m completely fine not ever owning a prestige chibi.

I am almost completely fine with Riot introducing $200 chromas, etc. If I see someone using one of them in one of my games, I might even think, "thank you, random citizen, for paying for this game so that I can play." Riot has even done a very good job of not making things pay-to-win. I don't even mind them releasing cosmetics marketed towards whales, as long as it doesn't significantly interrupt the release of features for normal players (why should I care if they released a $200 chroma, it probably took them like an hour to make and most of that was for the splash art. It doesn't keep me from getting new things, and I'm not buying it, so it doesn't really affect me. That chroma probably pays for itself if even one gets sold, if you think about it it's a really efficient way for them to raise funds for new features and stuff). There are only 2 things that concern me about their monetization, but they concern me a lot: 1) It's a gacha system, with an in-game premium currency. In-game premium currencies are specifically intended to keep people from really understanding how much money they're spending on something, while gacha systems are intended to be addictive. The combination of the two will probably draw in people who really can't afford to be spending the money on the game, and points towards an increasing likelihood of scummy monetization methods in the future. 2) I'm hesitantly looking forwards to the Riot MMO set to come out in a few years, but if I compare Riot's progress in monetization to Blizzard's, the Riot MMO will come out looking like Diablo IV or Diablo Immortals (in terms of monetization). I think an MMO would be great for League's lore and League's popularity, and I think an MMO set in League's universe could be amazing. However, if they gutted the game and made you pay extra to get individual features that should really be part of the base game, or if they made it pay to win, it would be ruined for me. If they did that to League, I would leave.
I still find it bullshit that Riot is saying that they arent making money aside from the whales when they have millions upon millions of players and I have met like 4 out of 200 ppl who dont buy skins. In LoR, you can still pay for individual cards (wildcards). And if you want the complete collection without spending a year playing the game daily, you need to. It much fairer than buying random cards in pack, but it should be enough to sustain the game really... I don't get why it isn't, it takes a lot of time to craft a handful of competitive decks, and it's better to have different ones lest the game become too repetitive. If LoR can attract new players and retain them for a couple of rotations, they should be reasonably tempted to spend a bit to craft new decks, because it's not easy to get new champions and epic cards and because the battle pass provide enough value to be attractive Imo... I wonder if making the crafting of numerous cards quickly less tedious would help.
In wild rift they confirmed will get yone prestige from the “boyband skinline”, riot also said that they want to do a “multi platform” event for it (lol and wild rift in the same time), so I’m confident to say that this event will go on tft as well

If they keep the monetaization on cosmetics I will never have a problem with it. Love their games, if they offer people things to spend on I just dont see a problem with it. There is 0 real reason to spend on skins so there is little to no coercive action here. If someone wants to spend 100k on a limited edition pair of shoes no one cares (dont come at me with "but they have a use" because no they dont, less than 1% of the money spent went to the "use" so if selling exclusive of premium skins gets them more founds and some of them are re invested into the game its a pluss for all.

I can accept paying high end for a skin flex in TFT but what I CANNOT ACCEPT AT ALL is that getting chibi legends (POJEECT Zed, Soul Fighter Gwen, ect) through lucky RNG and it DONESN'T GIVE YOU CUSTOM BOOMS TO MATCH! It seems so lackluster to have one of these fancy skins when you just have a run of the mill BOOM! I played league for 14+ years, so I have every champion and I only ever bought Vayne back during the "sated devourer" meta. I don't miss Vayne jungle with Sated Devourer at all, by the way.
I think the issue with LOR being selling only customisation is that the customisation is bad/lacking. no animated cards, almost no unique VFX etc. I feel that some physical tcg has better customisation.
In Game Development, it shall always be a battle between: Passion Or Money Incorporating both would be ideal, but such a game takes a lot of time, effort, and talent, and it usually isnt free to play.
Tft was fine with the old pass where not only you would pay to unlock more missions and rewards, you would invest your time playing to unlock everytbing. The crown jewel of the pass was always a really cool arena that you had to grind a lot of games to get. WELL, since they got the new treasure tokens, they changed the pass. Now you're paying the same for WAY less. A lot of the eggs were swaped for tokens, and the arena at the end is just one of the shitty common arenas. There's 0 incetive for players like myself, who always bought the pass to buy it. The pass is simply not worth the money + time that someone has to put into it.
I used to be a whale due to undiagnosed and unmedicated ADHD until 4 years ago. No joke. I spent my first paycheck on mobile games and League skins while I was in a homeless shelter. TFT got too pricey like last year, but this is ridiculous. Uninstalled and stopped playing as soon as the Barons came out. Thank god for psychiatrists. I'm actually getting my debt down. Otherwise, I would probably be in such a huge hole, but at least I would have this and that $200 Jhin chroma skin XD Obviously, no thank you.
After a decade of relationship with Riot Games and League of Legends, moving over to Dota2 has been an amazing fresh experience, especially with cosmetics and microtransactions in general, both are incredibly cheaper compare to League, aside from the cheap pricing of skin sets, you can buy individual pieces and make your own sets which may even be cheaper compare to the hero's currently available sets while still giving you a satisfactory cosmetic change. Dota2 also has gacha boxes but they show you predetermined sets you would get and not a giant pool of ever growing cosmetics, and after getting a set, depending on the Treasure, it's either a guaranteed on a different set until it rolls the set you want or if it's a dupe, you can convert them to points in which you can buy other cosmetics. The best part out of all this is that some cosmetics are resellable which you can use that money for something else not just in Dota2, making the game inherently very wallet friendly.
This is just flat out messed up how much work was put into making this compared to any other legendary or even an ultimate scan That's always been my problem with monetization just let me buy the damn thing for what it's actually worth if you did a good enough job you don't make enough money and yes I know everyone has their own taste and their own thoughts on how much something's worth but if you have a base that's easy to figure out

As long as they're only cosmetic, I don't care of riot wants to sell them for 10k USD. 2:55 i dont get why people still thinking it costs a lot of money to get all champs, if you buy a Pass (which come out like 5-6 times a year) for like $15-20 depending on your currency you can unlock 30-60 champions with blue essence discounts in your loot shop. It depends how much you play. I have a couple accounts now I've unlocked every single champion on, and one I even did in a single year where I purchased 3 passes and just spam played. Plus I only play one role and a handful of champs so I never needed all of them anyways. 60 dollars can get you around 150 champions if you just play a good amount.

everyday I'm bummed that LoR is so free to play. I truly wish the game could generate more revenue so we could get more guardians and boards and skins on a more rapid cadence. I love the game to death and the team is incredible. But man, sometimes it makes me sad that we're "too f2p for our own good." It stops people from even playing the game, for some reason

Admittedly, I may be the target audience for the jhin chroma. I have perhaps spent An Amount of money on league skins in the past, and I pride myself on having every single jhin skin and chroma possible. But I didnt even try to get the skin. Somehow i, a disgustingly dedicated jhin main didnt even want it. thats a little sad, riot.

The thing is that while money is certainly important in game development it is also very slippery slope once you start to do these kind of things. It can go very very wrong. I think the best way to cash in on the whales I've seen over the years is done by Jagex where they have completely different version of the same game (Runescape 3) where you can buy progress and MTX is a more common thing. RS3 plays that ''devil's advocate'' for RS community. Reason why I react to this case with Riot negatively is because the formula of ''big company'' + ''heavy monetization'' + ''F2P'' seems like that slippery slope in full action. You start with a loot box, you add a battle pass, you add insanely expensive chroma, you add another, another... And right here we can also see they are not afraid of doing it for each game they own and run under the Riot name. I guess runeterra is most untouched when it comes to MTX? I don't play it or follow it. But the fact they add these things, at least to me seems like a recipe for disaster. I've seen it many times where greed of company completely and utterly destroyes the game integrity (Nexon, all the korean MMOs, etc).
I'm already not a fan of the gacha/lootbox aspect of TFT considering League just lets you buy skins normally, but the fact we're getting over-priced prestige skins for chibis when we haven't even gotten a majority of the actual cast as Chibis, is wild. We could be appealing to more players of various champs... not just giving Yasuo more cosmetics like normal league...

my biggest problem with tft's monetization is the scaling back of free rewards. you used to get eggs with the free battle pass but now you only get the tokens for the gatcha, forcing people to interact with that system, and you dont even get enough tokens to roll until a bit into the battle pass.

Don't know if it's possible with how old the client is, but since it's a skin and doesn't change gameplay, you could just display it differently for every player. Removes the "flex" element though.

im gonna stand by what i said, they should sell the end goal of the gacha systems as a 200$ pack with the gacha capsules, to avoid controversy just dont promise anything unique behind gacha, and probably never directly sell gacha
I am almost completely fine with Riot introducing $200 chromas, etc. If I see someone using one of them in one of my games, I might even think, "thank you, random citizen, for paying for this game so that I can play." Riot has even done a very good job of not making things pay-to-win. I don't even mind them releasing cosmetics marketed towards whales, as long as it doesn't significantly interrupt the release of features for normal players (why should I care if they released a $200 chroma, it probably took them like an hour to make and most of that was for the splash art. It doesn't keep me from getting new things, and I'm not buying it, so it doesn't really affect me. That chroma probably pays for itself if even one gets sold, if you think about it it's a really efficient way for them to raise funds for new features and stuff). There are only 2 things that concern me about their monetization, but they concern me a lot:
1) It's a gacha system, with an in-game premium currency. In-game premium currencies are specifically intended to keep people from really understanding how much money they're spending on something, while gacha systems are intended to be addictive. The combination of the two will probably draw in people who really can't afford to be spending the money on the game, and points towards an increasing likelihood of scummy monetization methods in the future.
2) I'm hesitantly looking forwards to the Riot MMO set to come out in a few years, but if I compare Riot's progress in monetization to Blizzard's, the Riot MMO will come out looking like Diablo IV or Diablo Immortals (in terms of monetization). I think an MMO would be great for League's lore and League's popularity, and I think an MMO set in League's universe could be amazing. However, if they gutted the game and made you pay extra to get individual features that should really be part of the base game, or if they made it pay to win, it would be ruined for me. If they did that to League, I would leave.

In LoR, you can still pay for individual cards (wildcards). And if you want the complete collection without spending a year playing the game daily, you need to. It much fairer than buying random cards in pack, but it should be enough to sustain the game really... I don't get why it isn't, it takes a lot of time to craft a handful of competitive decks, and it's better to have different ones lest the game become too repetitive.
If LoR can attract new players and retain them for a couple of rotations, they should be reasonably tempted to spend a bit to craft new decks, because it's not easy to get new champions and epic cards and because the battle pass provide enough value to be attractive Imo... I wonder if making the crafting of numerous cards quickly less tedious would help.
As long as it doesn't affect gameplay like adding stats to champions, it's all right. Every online game needs money to run their servers afterall

There is 0 real reason to spend on skins so there is little to no coercive action here. If someone wants to spend 100k on a limited edition pair of shoes no one cares (dont come at me with "but they have a use" because no they dont, less than 1% of the money spent went to the "use" so if selling exclusive of premium skins gets them more founds and some of them are re invested into the game its a pluss for all.

I think the issue with LOR being selling only customisation is that the customisation is bad/lacking. no animated cards, almost no unique VFX etc. I feel that some physical tcg has better customisation.

Tft was fine with the old pass where not only you would pay to unlock more missions and rewards, you would invest your time playing to unlock everytbing.
The crown jewel of the pass was always a really cool arena that you had to grind a lot of games to get.
WELL, since they got the new treasure tokens, they changed the pass. Now you're paying the same for WAY less.
A lot of the eggs were swaped for tokens, and the arena at the end is just one of the shitty common arenas.
There's 0 incetive for players like myself, who always bought the pass to buy it. The pass is simply not worth the money + time that someone has to put into it.
I used to be a whale due to undiagnosed and unmedicated ADHD until 4 years ago. No joke. I spent my first paycheck on mobile games and League skins while I was in a homeless shelter. TFT got too pricey like last year, but this is ridiculous. Uninstalled and stopped playing as soon as the Barons came out.

After a decade of relationship with Riot Games and League of Legends, moving over to Dota2 has been an amazing fresh experience, especially with cosmetics and microtransactions in general, both are incredibly cheaper compare to League, aside from the cheap pricing of skin sets, you can buy individual pieces and make your own sets which may even be cheaper compare to the hero's currently available sets while still giving you a satisfactory cosmetic change. Dota2 also has gacha boxes but they show you predetermined sets you would get and not a giant pool of ever growing cosmetics, and after getting a set, depending on the Treasure, it's either a guaranteed on a different set until it rolls the set you want or if it's a dupe, you can convert them to points in which you can buy other cosmetics. The best part out of all this is that some cosmetics are resellable which you can use that money for something else not just in Dota2, making the game inherently very wallet friendly.

As long as they're only cosmetic, I don't care of riot wants to sell them for 10k USD. Obviously they'll have to price them so people will feel like there's value there, but people who complain about cosmetics they can't afford need a reality check.

2:55 i dont get why people still thinking it costs a lot of money to get all champs, if you buy a Pass (which come out like 5-6 times a year) for like $15-20 depending on your currency you can unlock 30-60 champions with blue essence discounts in your loot shop. It depends how much you play. I have a couple accounts now I've unlocked every single champion on, and one I even did in a single year where I purchased 3 passes and just spam played. Plus I only play one role and a handful of champs so I never needed all of them anyways. 60 dollars can get you around 150 champions if you just play a good amount.
This hurts even more when u see that a chroma for a skin is behind a 65 buck paywall... ik there is more too it but still.
