    you are correct that a person should just get what's made for their system if they already have or can get it, however, i do know many great purposes for these still. as a person who owns his own small warehouse of things and still does pc repair on the side, i get a massive amount of systems that come through here. a ton of ram from desktops can be reused and often is, where i'm often left with a ton of 1gb and 2gb sticks or whatever. but laptops, often times their ram gets reused far less because systems just get scrapped or ditched, or already come maxed with ram. so people like me have incredible amounts of laptop ram laying around, and still have many desktops come through here. this is a very cheap way to get use out of all of that ram. the cheapest of those adapters are around 3 bucks with free shipping and still work great. essentially is like 3 dollars per stick for those customers while i have the stock. i also am into a great deal of gaming and emulation and other misc and test a huge range of systems, which makes them useful from time to time there too. so yeah, they aren't really a consumer thing, but more of an enthusiast thing.

      how would you say the compatibility is with regular ram sticks and also dual channel? hit and miss?

    • @natemasterson7274
      @natemasterson7274 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@krystilla i'll answer the second question first because it's the good answer, heh. of all tests i have done over time, dual/single channel and all of it's necessities or quirks operate the same and identically as you would expect, nothing special or new there. the first question there though is where i've noticed a lot of varying things, and it can be very random. some sticks will work with others, but generally, i would say 80% of the time when trying to combine them with normal sticks in the same system, it will not boot. and of the few times it does, i would say 50% of those times become problematic or unstable. so just don't mix them, everything else is good or as expected/intended.

    I'm searching for some even crazier solution: These DDR2-SODIMM models are so expensive. The notebook is used as desktop, it will not be moved much. Would be massive, if I could use a kind of external adapter with wires to get used for cheap DDR2 desktop RAM (say a 4 or 8 GB module) with an adapter in my notebook that only supports DDR2. A DDR2-SODIMM costs around 50 USD, this is insane. So I need a DDR2 desktop to DDR2-SODIMM-Adapter. I know that I only could hook it up external because of the bigger physical size of desktop RAM.

      It is quite obvious to....some....that using one of the adapters in any of the RAM slots would make none of the RAM not work due to the increased trace length compared to regular DIMM cards. RAM are very high speed components and exact trace length to the DDR ICs is a must, that is why the trace have a lot of curves so that all the traces have exactly the same length. It might, or not, be possible than 5mm trace mismatch can make any RAM to not work.
      That means than no amount of research can improve the product because one cannot cheat physics.

    afaik, all 35w tdp processor of intel have support laptop version of the RAM. its just that you cant mix voltage working on ram.
    this is actually a life saver for me since im repurposing a old tower to become a some sort of server and only I had is a bunch of laptop ram and the adapters are really cheap compared to buying a desktop version of the RAM brand new or used.

    QUESTION: Desktop DDR3 RAM runs at 1.5v while most laptop DDR3 RAM runs at 1.35v. I have laptop DDR3 RAM that runs at 1.35v, but I also have laptop DDR3 RAM that runs at 1.5v. Does this adapter affect voltage? Is this adapter compatible with both 1.35v Laptop RAM and 1.5v Laptop RAM? I'm just wondering how the adapter and desktop handle the difference in voltage.

      i think the voltage is usually controlled by the motherboard, and is specific to whatever is installed. You could also tweak it in your bios if you don’t have a barebones motherboard
