Turned 50 this year, and for most of you seeing Rattle & Hum clips in 2022 onwards - many won't know this concert was a worldwide-distributed THEATRICAL MOVIE release (if you didn't know). I remember how exciting it was when Rattle & Hum came to our town's movie theater. I went 3 or 4 times that week. So many of us as kids, in small towns in rural parts of the country, had no shot at ever seeing U2 in concert (or any huge band, for that matter). This movie was the closest experience we would ever have, and it was surreal and moving. I remember specifically how sharp and detailed the 35mm B&W film looked (it felt like what IMAX looked like, decades later). Little to no grain, compared to color film. Learned later, B&W film had 2X to 3X the fineness of color film positive prints. It was like "being there"... like looking through a glass window at a real stage. AND THE SOUND ! Our local theater actually CRANKED the volume for this one (never knew their system could push like that, until Rattle & Hum). Again, it felt like being there. For those really into this show, highly recommend finding the BluRay and playing this movie in a big home theater in the true Dolby 5.1 mix. You can close your eyes and truly be "in the arena". No joke. They mixed this movie to perfection. We were so appreciative that U2 went for this theatrical concert movie concept... especially leaving the rawness of the footage as-is. Camera operators in view? Who cares. Dollies rolling into the shots? Who cares. I love seeing the huge Panavision camera rigs capturing a REAL performance, right before our eyes. They didn't edit or cut to hide the cinematography in real-time.
I was still in LA then, couldn't get to a show there either. Soo, when this came out (they were off my musical radar by then, being a metaller and all😉), i too visited the local theatre on a weeknite. Like 10 people there?. And yeah, they had it cranked like a full house! It worked. I was back with Acthung Baby. This when Nirvana (who cares?!), and their ilk were starting their own, drug-fueled revolution. Later, it's Grohl singing, Got tired of sitting around watching the old one die!

I think I agree with you. I wish I was there. It is raw U2. Passionate and true. The following tours, although great (zoo tv had brilliant moments), became a little too 'polished' and then virtuous. I still love them though

(My oldest two also know them as that group that put a bunch of music on their Ipods that they didn't want. (There was only one good song of the bunch (The Miracle), and even it was pretty comical when you realized they were singing about the Ramones ("The mot beautiful sound I'd ever heard" - The Ramones? They specialized in ugly on purpose.)

this movie footage was not "sped up" by anyone but U2 i saw Rattle & Hum 3 times when it was in theaters, i own the VHS, laserdisc, dvd, blu-ray and the HD-DVD. this is the correct tempo of Pride as performed in Rattle & Hum if you are watching this clip "out of context" and you are used to the studio version then yes, it will sound faster and is played at a faster tempo than the studio version but it's not by error, it's intentional in the movie R&H, they are coming out of a 1/2 acoustical, 1/2 jamming version of Sunday where Bono does some talking about the revolution so the tempo goes back and forth on Sunday. there was a bombing the day this was recorded which Bono was very passionate about it when doing "Sunday". when "Sunday" ends they go right into Pride and the house lights come up. i'm assuming they wanted their fans to go home feeling really good so they took the tempo of Pride and kicked it up a notch for the live crowd (notice he says "good night" to the crowd at the end of this) btw, the best way to hear Rattle & Hum is from the DVD, go into the menu and selection the 5.1 audio option. somehow when this was "remastered" for blu-ray & HD-DVD something happened to the sound quality. get the dvd, watch it in 5.1 and have a good subwoofer especially for the songs "Bad" and "Streets" even if you don't have a 5.1 set-up, select it anyway, go into your receiver and set it to 2.0, the receiver should "down-mix" the 5.1 to 2.0 but you wont lose anything. IMO it actually sounds best when you listen to the dvd 5.1 version in 2.0 over a good pair of tower speakers (or 2.1) with a good pair of mains plus a good subwoofer

It was ripped from a PAL DVD, probably Region 2 (Europe). Google “PAL speedup” - it was a compromise to play 24 frame per second film on 25fps PAL TVs. It speeds up the source material by about 4% and raises the pitch by about 1 half-step / semitone. When Universal Music Group went on its rampage to take down all copyrighted material, the PAL rips were the only versions that bypassed their copyright filters and thus stayed available on TH-cam.
