I remember when these were launched. My friend who was switching from Windows at the time, refused to buy the white one solely for aesthetic reasons. He got it and after he upgraded to another machine put it in storage. Still owns it to this day knowing it's rare.
Hey hey, Your perspective and conclusion is off a bit. I was selling these MacBooks when they were new. The different colors weren’t ‘competing’ the way you seem to be saying, rather it was a ‘Good/Better/Best’ choice. The BlackBook was the TOP model, differentiated by Price, Color, and a SUPERDRIVE, rather than a non dvd burning Combo Drive. Only in their final year/s was that dynamic changed. But it was always the preferred model. Because the MacBooks were marketed/ sold to students and regular users, most folks simply purchased the more affordable models - think of it this way - today, most people probably buy the LOWER priced $1999 MacBook Pro (No Touch Bar), rather than the top $2,799 TOUCH bar versions, a lower price usually equals more sales. So you’ll see the white model was selling at least 3 or 4-to-1 because the price difference was usually about $300 more 😱😱😱 Also, adjusting it to $2100 because of “inflation” is wrong thinking, and bad math. Rather you should compare it to today’s version, which would be about a 13” MacBook Air/Pro - still in the around $1400 ballpark, not a $2000 15” MacBook Pro. These Macs run really well with an SSD. Believe it or not, the Macs were phenomenal at the time, they preceded glass trackpads, and unibody, and everything 2018, and they did sell very very well, had a thriving demand, and were the cream of the crop, please dont sell it short by judging it based on modern Macs capabilities 😲😄😜 Peace✌️
Cafearius O Try Macs Fan Control and see if some of the sensors is giving a crazy big value. Plus, it's a 11 year old machine - thermal compounds and such could've weakened over time.
I did a 2009 2.13ghz motherboard swap into a 2008 black MacBook. It requires modifications to the standoffs inside the bottom case and swapping the sata DVD drive. But it otherwise is perfect and runs High Sierra.
I had one of these, it was actually my first lap top. I LOVED it! The matte black with the bright apple logo was so stunning, I had to have the black. It still looks good, it aged much better than the white. It had a really interesting feel to it as well. I protected the trackpad with a black/white vine design skin, it looked great and I avoided that shiny look that happens over time. I was upset when I needed to upgrade and had to give up the black for a metal one. I kept it in perfect shape. My bf still has it packed away somewhere, he's always digging out the old ones for various purposes. I saw it sitting out a few months ago and still felt a pang, I really dug that machine.
They weren't all that heavy. Ended up buying one in late 2008. It was a pretty decent computer for the time. Sad to see that Lion was as far as it was able to upgrade considering how pricey they were. :(
Honestly, I would buy one if they restored the line using modern hardware. Even if not the super thin unibody design. They were great little machines. :)
Also, I found that with a 250 GB SSD and 8GB of RAM the 2009 model actually functions pretty well as a light use machine. Can't really do too much graphical wise, but it is good for surfing TH-cam and small like projects.
2007 MacBook was my first laptop. I scratched the crap out of the white casing and replaced the top case with black. It looked so cool in two-tone. Look at that key travel... back then these were considered shallow.
Price wise,All computers are cheap now, when you compare it to computers 30 years ago. Laptops in the 90s with 1 gig hard drives and 16mb memory were like 2500.00. back in that day.
i loved my black macbook. if you were buying a mac at the time i don't remember it being especially rare. the matte black finish with a great look and it performed quite well for that price point. it was also one of (if not the) first chicklet style keyboard mac laptops. best keyboard design they ever had!
i subscribed to you when u had like 5k subs a few months ago. now u got 15k. congratz man, u put alot of work and effort in your vids. i enjoy them very much!
Bought one in 2007, still has a special spot in my mind. I pull it off the shelf a couple times a year for nostalgia. Loved the built in toggled numeric pad.
I have the black 2008 2.4Ghz C2D running Snow Leopard on an SSD (and bootable to Chrome via a USB drive. It makes one heck of a ChromeBook.) in G+++ condition. Can't bring myself to part with it.
Nice video. This is how, I feel about my almost 20 year old Black Powerbook Firewire with a its 500 Mhz G3 Power PC processor, two "hot" swapable bays (for an extra battery, zip drive, super disk drive, floppy drive, and DVD drive). While only a collectors item now, I still enjoy being able to use it for basic computer tasks.
As a fellow BlackBook owner, I couldn't agree more with your points in the video. Not at all productive Mac in this day and age but she's still a beauty to behold. Plus I'm lucky enough to own one of the last and most powerful models they made : the 2008 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo penryn with 4GB RAM and a self-installed 240GB SSD Sure the battery life is dreadful but for a ten year old machine you could do a lot worse 😅
I saw this video when Luke made it 4 years ago. Still love it. I have a 2008 model running Mavericks through MacPost patcher and it runs great. Maxed out RAM and installed SSD. No issues, still use it. Mavericks makes it a very usable machine in 2022.
Its impossible. It has a motherboard from 11 years ago and would not support any new pieces of hardware. An ssd and a stick of ram would still work though.
fizdog I get what you suggest but unfortunately, laptops are not that modular and the motherboard is often attached to the keyboard dock and different motherboards have different BIOS. To install MacOS on top of that, is another feat. This would require a team of engineers to achieve and it's not as simple as replacing a few components. You can always have fun building a PC though :))
I have a 2006 black MacBook, and it’s held up well. I am currently using it lightly while my work laptop is being fixed, and it’s pretty nice considering it’s age. My trackpad is still working perfectly, and I actually really like the old tactile feeling. Obviously it’s not as convenient as a newer Mac, but there’s something nice about how tactile it is.
I really wanted to buy this MacBook, when in the Spring of 2009, I wanted to finally switch from Windows Think books to a MacBook. I looked at it in stores, in Busan Korea for almost a year. My Think book finally died in June of 2009. I went to purchase the black MacBook but I was told that they no longer had it. It had been replaced by a white 2009 model. I reluctantly purchased this new MacBook still longing for that beautiful, black MacBook. Thanks for stirring those fond memories.
I totally agree with you on how rare these things are. I spent days looking for a black MacBook online in good condition and with a little luck I found one. It was a 2007 model ( which only supports up to 3GB ram as apposed to the 4GB ram supported to the 2008 model ) in near mint condition. I might look again to see if I can find one with the box, oh geez that would be to die for! LOL anyways thank you for this video, such a detailed awesome video(:
I just put mine in semi-retirement. I loved mine and was always my go-to machine for researching repairs of my other machines in the house...Used it as the center of my digital DJ set up. Lovely looking machine and lasted me up until this year when I decided to finally buy something newer:) Great video!
I had a black G3 1997 Powerbook - that was my only laptop until I purchased my 2011 17" MacBook Pro - loved the color and finish, looked like new the day I sold it on eBay. It never failed me in once in those 14 years, unfortunately I cannot say the same for my 2011 model which died with the chronic graphics board problem a couple years ago.
I had one...got 8 years out of it. Got me through college. Dropped it a couple times. Finally, the logic board went, and I decided to get a new MacBook Pro. Now, my MacBook pro is 10 years old, and, knock on wood, is still running like a champ. I still have my black MacBook though. Has a lot of sentimental value.
I own one from 2006. But it's not very useful anymore, even with linux. That said these trackpads can do multi-gesture in linux. I don't have an issue with the trackpads because you can tap the pad itself, not the button. I'm daily driving a 2008 MacBook White with Mint.
My black macbook is the original 2006 model fully maxed out, and my battery only has 154 cycles and holds up pretty well, Snow Leopard is still quite useable in 2019, its awesome to see my lil macbook still kicking around! I bought it for 20 euro's and it whas water damaged, but i managed to repair my blackbook and now its working just fine! I still use it for school now and its a great lil thing! And yes its an eye catcher!
My cousin had one back in '08. He even regretted selling it cheap in 2012 when he got a macbook air 11 inch with 4gb ram and 128 ssd. Sure the new thing was way faster and even smaller, but it still didn't look as good as the old one.
So here is a story for you Luke about 12 years ago I worked for an Apple re-seller here in Australia this MacBook came and went it was sort of popular BUT there is a show on Australian tv called Home And Away(it’s still going ) up until 2014 they had a black MacBook as a prop . Long after it was discontinued, People would come into our store asking for the black MacBook as they had seen it on the show the night before and assumed it was a new unit. This was 5 years after it was discontinued.
I always envied my dad because he had the Black MacBook and I had the white one hahaha. Now he has the grey Retina MacBook Pro and I have the Space Grey MBP 2017. Funny how it changed 😅
I score one of these a year ago for $50+free shipping, same core 2 duo, 2GB ram, 200GB HD, in the original box with all the original discs, cables, power supply, 2 extra batteries - one of which was brand new in the package, and a docking station.
I had an early 2008 black macbook for a while and I agree with almost all the points made in this video. Just thought I'd point out a couple things: 1. The white macbook had a matte palmrest and display bezel too until 2009 with the unibody upgrade when it dropped the matte palmrest (oddly the display bezel is still matte). 2. I don't think you mentioned the keyboard, but as far as I remember, it's one of the best macbook keyboards I've ever used. Far better than the unibody macbook keyboard and arguably better than the aluminum macbook pro's keyboard (2008-2012) Awesome video! :)
Kyle I just ordered one of these but, not the most smart with computers. It comes with 2GB which isnt a lot :/ I bought a 1TB external hard drive but, what’s this chip you’re talking about?
I had the black MacBook. It was used as the “family computer”. It lasted for a long time but it doesn’t work anymore due to swelling on the bottom of the computer.
Seeing this Macbook used by Riley in the first National Treasure movie is what really got me interested and aware of Apple. I was so sad when they discontinued this color, and even more disappointed when they came out with the rounded chunky Macbook.
I had one of these and I loved it. I will say that I didn't love it as much as the 12-inch PowerBook G4 that it replaced. I bought one of these with at 100GB HD, and then installed a 2GB RAM upgrade immediately after getting it out of the box. My only problem I had with it other than a flaw with the heat sink that I had to have repaired was that if I was using it in a dark room, I couldn't see the letters on the keys. I wish Apple would give us a black MacBook Pro or at least make a MacBook Pro in "midnight" like they did with the MacBook Air.
yes but this weird trackpad may be a bit less accurate for some reason, battery life is not as good but acceptable and wifi needs a drivermodule not always in the repos/preinstalled anymore (b43)
The first computer I ever bought was a late 2007 black MacBook and I finally replaced it in 2018. It was the only personal computer I used that whole time. I bought it for $1500 back then and it was worth every penny.
I just bought a Thinkpad X61 with similar specs and the eBay team/US customs checked it out for flight clearance and trade embargo issues. It might come without a fan or something and the battery is a no go for several reasons. I supplement the missing items with envelopes from China. It makes my mailbox more interesting 3-4 times a year and I learn something.
My high school had cabinets of these black macbooks, we used to use them for activities in class. In 2015 they finally upgraded their tech and...I assume they either tossed or sold all of them blackbooks for pennies.
I still have mine. Only use it whenever there’s an issue with my wifi that can be fixed by connecting to the router via wire. It’s the only laptop around me that has a built-in Ethernet port!
I have bought one of these and replaced old MacOS with Ubuntu Mate 16.04. Yes, no Bootcamp, just clean install on EFI with replacing MacOS. And it's pretty usable, except of screen
I prefer the white one, but hands down this is best looking MacBook they ever made. I'd absolutely love to have one of these but with modern internals, current day trackpad and a Retina screen
Crazy. I bought this exact laptop. It was my first new Mac. Upgrading from a used iBook. I purchased it my first year of college and got a student computer loan from my local credit union. The good old days. I may buy one just to have it later on.
I wanted one of these back in the day. I ended up buying the white one back in 08 because I wasn't going to spend that extra amount just for a black MacBook with slightly more storage. I kinda wished I saved up a little more for it now. My white one has aged rather well. The only issues it has are some cracks in the plastic around the display and the display itself isn't as bright as it use to be.

I personally own a late 2006 MacBook black. I had installed Windows 10 on it but it had a really bad performance so I went back to Mac OS X Lion. Right now I have dualbooted it via SFOTT to Lion and Yosemite and it works pretty well!
Your cat has the same stupid stare as you. You two are made for eachother. Nice video btw. I never knew black macbooks existed. A little SSD treatment and better knowledge of OS updating and you're good to go.
Got myself one of these last year for $26! The only issue was the battery as it could not hold a charge, which was replaced for $25. Even though it can only run Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 at the most, I still love it and its looks. Really wish Apple still made MacBooks in this color
It was Polycarbonate 😄, and was very durable. The top case did crack though, probably from torsion/stress - Apple did offer a free top case replacement program, and you should be able to get top cases relatively cheap on eBay. They also clean up really really well - I wonder if you can mod a glass trackpad into them???
Apple uses full body aluminium mainly for cooling tho. It works as a huge heat spreader to help the shitty fans they chose cool the components down. I will be pretty surprised if they chose to go plastic or polycarbonate that doesn't spread heat as well as metal.
Hey! look at the Black Macbook's failure like this: Back when this was new, anyone with a glossy white OR matte silver laptop was using an Apple and you could spot one a mile away. Black was and is so common on laptops that Mac buyers wanted to stand out.
I bought one of these for just $50 today. The last model, 2.4 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM. Battery was bulging so I bought a new one for $17 on ebay, and I got a 4 gig RAM kit for $9. So all in, for $76, not a bad machine. I even threw an old SSD in there.
I remember when these were launched. My friend who was switching from Windows at the time, refused to buy the white one solely for aesthetic reasons. He got it and after he upgraded to another machine put it in storage. Still owns it to this day knowing it's rare.
Black Mac don’t crack
but black Mac on crack
For real,,hell yeah!
I have a one on it’s third keyboard but debunks this theory.

Your perspective and conclusion is off a bit.

Hey my fan is running hot on my Blackbook. Any idea what I should do?
Cafearius O Try Macs Fan Control and see if some of the sensors is giving a crazy big value. Plus, it's a 11 year old machine - thermal compounds and such could've weakened over time.
Mario Arroyo - replace the fan, it’s inexpensive, and should be relatively easy to do.
D R you think? Aren't these suppose to run hot anyways? I hope not because I'd like to keep using it. But I'll replace it if I have to.
I did a 2009 2.13ghz motherboard swap into a 2008 black MacBook. It requires modifications to the standoffs inside the bottom case and swapping the sata DVD drive. But it otherwise is perfect and runs High Sierra.
I also did the mod but decided to not put back DVD drive. But mod the speakers for better overall sound.

Honestly it looks like a Thinkpad with an Apple sticker on :)
It even feels rubber like the ThinkPad
No it doesnt
Have you ever seen a ThinkPad? 😅

bro that means it invincible.
Apple should make a modern variant of this Macbook. Same body, but with modern specs
One problem: _Blackbook too thicc._ Also these thigs are actually pretty heavy for their size too
They weren't all that heavy. Ended up buying one in late 2008. It was a pretty decent computer for the time. Sad to see that Lion was as far as it was able to upgrade considering how pricey they were. :(

Got this for my girlfriend last month for 80 bucks... cool looking laptop 👍
sjcongo 😂😂😂
I had an early 2008 black macbook for a while and I agree with almost all the points made in this video. Just thought I'd point out a couple things:
Far better than the unibody macbook keyboard and arguably better than the aluminum macbook pro's keyboard (2008-2012)
Awesome video! :)
"Completely maxed out"
2GB DDR2 RAM lol
If you can find the correct chips, they can support up to 4GB
Kyle I just ordered one of these but, not the most smart with computers. It comes with 2GB which isnt a lot :/ I bought a 1TB external hard drive but, what’s this chip you’re talking about?
Bought one of these new back then and still have it. Used it for tech business for years and years.
A macbook and a cat perfect Video
I had the black MacBook. It was used as the “family computer”. It lasted for a long time but it doesn’t work anymore due to swelling on the bottom of the computer.
I didn’t even know this existed 😂
Seeing this Macbook used by Riley in the first National Treasure movie is what really got me interested and aware of Apple. I was so sad when they discontinued this color, and even more disappointed when they came out with the rounded chunky Macbook.
Back when Apple actually cared about macs.
Your cat has the same eyes as yours
masterchrome96 Yeah crooked and jacked!!!
Racist
David M how is that racist 🤦🏾♀️
The Blackbook was my first Mac. Bought it back in 2007. Such a nice machine! 👍
Claus-L. Müller me too
Does it still work? Can you even browse?
Almost looks as nice as a Thinkpad, but not quite.
Robert Drake Thinkpads look ugly as fuck
@@ubera6996 they look absolutely classic. This doesn't
My roommate in college in 2007 had this thing. It was a beauty.
can it run linux?
yes but this weird trackpad may be a bit less accurate for some reason, battery life is not as good but acceptable and wifi needs a drivermodule not always in the repos/preinstalled anymore (b43)
VeryMilan thanks.. i was looking to buy it on ebay.
Tejas Jani, I run Ubuntu 18.04 Lts on mine it works pretty good. It works better with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
The first computer I ever bought was a late 2007 black MacBook and I finally replaced it in 2018. It was the only personal computer I used that whole time. I bought it for $1500 back then and it was worth every penny.
You should make it a badass Linux device
eclip_tech I have the white version & did just that.
I remember the clicking issue, I folded up a post-it and stuck it under the battery. The added pressure gives you the click back.
I looks cool but I wouldn't pay an extra $200 for it.
Dennis W i paid mine 80$ just need to wait for a deal
I bought a Surface Laptop 3 in matte black to remind myself of my old beat up black MacBook. OS differences aside, they are surprisingly similar.
Get a dbrand skin to make newer laptops black
Skins are crap
Ryan Pavey - nothing like a good ol paint job
I just bought a Thinkpad X61 with similar specs and the eBay team/US customs checked it out for flight clearance and trade embargo issues. It might come without a fan or something and the battery is a no go for several reasons. I supplement the missing items with envelopes from China. It makes my mailbox more interesting 3-4 times a year and I learn something.
You should upgrade the RAM and storage.
Bibasik7 it’s ddr2 it’s gonna be slow af. I had a 08
DDR2 is definitely fast enough for normal usage
My high school had cabinets of these black macbooks, we used to use them for activities in class. In 2015 they finally upgraded their tech and...I assume they either tossed or sold all of them blackbooks for pennies.
Bro you are gonna have a lot of subs one day...REMEMBER THIS VERY COMMENT!!
I still have mine. Only use it whenever there’s an issue with my wifi that can be fixed by connecting to the router via wire. It’s the only laptop around me that has a built-in Ethernet port!
Did you just say 1100 laptop in 2007 is entry level?
Gannon used market
I think he was referring to the entry level or lowest price for a Mac laptop back in 2007. I had to listen to him a few times to catch that, too.
It's the first MacBook that I used and the very first reason why I fell in love & use Apple products.
Anyone else like “AR 12 song” 😂😂
Hopefully, with the more colorful Macbooks they bring back a black Macbook. I would really want to get one.
Such cute cat😍

A friend of mine had one of those. I thought it looked beautiful. The only black MacBook I’ve seen in real life.
I’m selling mine lol
I have bought one of these and replaced old MacOS with Ubuntu Mate 16.04. Yes, no Bootcamp, just clean install on EFI with replacing MacOS. And it's pretty usable, except of screen
There was a black one?
Yup. Did you watch the video? lol
You must be really young.
I prefer the white one, but hands down this is best looking MacBook they ever made. I'd absolutely love to have one of these but with modern internals, current day trackpad and a Retina screen
Woah new intro
Crazy. I bought this exact laptop. It was my first new Mac. Upgrading from a used iBook. I purchased it my first year of college and got a student computer loan from my local credit union. The good old days. I may buy one just to have it later on.
Join the dark side
Man, I remember a friend who had this. We would stay up all night playing spore and flash games at his house. Good times
Once you go black you go black Mac 😂😂🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️

Love the cat!
I used a Black MacBook for 5 years - 2009-2014. I also liked that it was unique and not common.
Plastic body.... No thanks.
James Baker the black one did not scratch very easy
Jacob Hoggan yea but they could make it a durable plastic like on the 5c which is hard to even break unless you’re purposely smashing it on the ground
Apple uses full body aluminium mainly for cooling tho. It works as a huge heat spreader to help the shitty fans they chose cool the components down. I will be pretty surprised if they chose to go plastic or polycarbonate that doesn't spread heat as well as metal.
You act like they are still selling them and hes telling you to buy one, how fucking stupid are you james???
Hey! look at the Black Macbook's failure like this: Back when this was new, anyone with a glossy white OR matte silver laptop was using an Apple and you could spot one a mile away.
My black MacBook got stolen all with my entire backpack out of my car In 2012. So tragic. I’ll always love that model, forever.
