    I actually really like the original, I actually can relate to it in a way.
    The thing people forget is that she's in an abusive environment and she has been since childhood, she's known nothing else since not being able to leave the house and only seeing her abusing step family.
    The dress and going to the ball means more to her because it's her escape, it shows her there's more out there and she can escape her situation thanks to the fairy godmother showing her this.
    When you're in an abusive situation you're not an independent person, they tear you down from the inside in every way possible and make you believe you deserve it.
    There's more real emotion in the original and I don't evn think the prince saves her, I think it's the fairy god mother showing her kindness and a way out of her situation.
    The dress being ruined is worse in the original because it was the only thing she had and they really destroyed it. It broke her.
    I think it's a wonderful film and idk unless you've been in that situation you might not understand her being trapped as much.

    It's honestly exhausting that basically every Cinderella movie that's coming out is an "omg girlboss" remake. Like I'm as feminist as they come but I feel like these remakes miss the point of the original Cinderella, which is about an abused girl who breaks the cycle of abuse by staying kind and compassionate to those around her and is rewarded for it.
    Cinderella isn't weak or "not feminist" for not being a girlboss or whatever, she's a good person who chooses kindness and optimism even when it's hard. And her story was never about sitting around waiting for a man to rescue her; she literally went to the ball because she wanted a fun night out away from her abusive family and just so happened to meet the prince who fell in love with her.
    There's nothing inherently bad with these girlboss remakes but it feels kind of insulting when that's ALL that ever comes out, like the original Cinderella is something that needs to be "fixed."

    In the Disney version it wasn't some random dress; it was her mother's dress that she decided to fix up. The animals fixed it up for her because she didn't have the time, and then her stepsisters destroyed it out of spite. Then the Fairy Godmother took that and magicked it up.

    • @neliaferreira9983
      @neliaferreira9983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +228

      Well, Fairy Godmother did not restore the mother's dress at all, just gave a whole new one.
      That bothered me for many years. It was clear Cinderella loved and missed her mother and losing that dress made her so sad. So why didn't the Godmother honour that.
      Recently I concluded that the Godmother must have decided Cindy was ready for her own dress, to be her own adult person, instead of her mom's daughter.
      Truth is Cindy loved her new dress and there was never again a mention to her mother after that.

    I HATE that they tried to pull the “realism” card for the sake of an artificial conflict by mentioning gender roles and the hierarchy of power, because if those things were supposed to exist in this universe then Ella would’ve been hunted down and publicly beheaded for acting the way she did towards the king. Not even other royals would’ve gotten away with that level of disrespect lol.
    P.S. I don’t give a fuck about how ahead of her time they wanted to make Ella seem, NO ONE in that timeline would say that balls are “antiquated”. Balls were just gatherings for rich people to socialise. It would be the equivalent of saying that going to a club or a party to meet new people is old-fashioned today.

Bruno Giordano, Joan of arc, most of all the women tried in the Salem's witch hunts are few of many examples of "ahead of their time".
      I feel the mix of realism with modern values come from the fantasy that we've all had of "if I appear randomly in - - - - I would be killing it with modern/hindsight knowledge" when really we would die of dysentery on week 1.

      This is something everyone whom hates on the Disney version seems to completely miss, and one of the reasons why I like Cinderella the most out of all the Disney classics. So I hate to see her being the one given the most criticism when she's actually shown the most inner strength of every Disney princess written. Most in her situation would have a mental breakdown, or even be driven to suicide. But she stuck it out and managed to finally get her escape when the time came.
      She didn't necessarily have to fight for it and be all "in your face" about things. But she got her freedom by maintaining her sense of self and taking any opportunities that came her way. And the prince aspect is probably the most significant part of it all: the prince fell for _her_ , not the other way around. All she did was accept it and get her freedom in the form of marriage. But she didn't actively pursue it; her only goal was to break free of her hard life. He just happened to be her way of doing it.

    A Guide to the Best Cinderella Adaptations, Which Already Did Anything This Film Did That Was Remotely Redeeming:
    1) If you're looking for a version of Cinderella where she saves the prince equally with the prince saving her, try _Ever After_ (1998), _Cinderella_ (2015), or _Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella_ (1997).
    2) If you're looking for a version of Cinderella that's a better musical, and/or has a unique fairy godmother, try _Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella_ (1997).
    3) If you're looking for a version of Cinderella where she gets to know the prince before marrying him, try _Ever After_ (1998) or _Cinderella_ (2015).
    4) If you're looking for a version of Cinderella in which the prince has his own story, try _Ever After_ (1998), _Cinderella_ (2015), or _Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella_ (1997).
    5) If you're looking for a version of Cinderella that is funny, try _Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella_ (1997).
    Personally, I'd recommend all three if you haven't seen them; they're classics.
    A couple of other things, briefly:
    The repressed dressmaker thing doesn't make any sense. Who, exactly, does this movie think were dressmakers in this historical period? Women have _always_ had jobs they could work, throughout history, and one of those jobs was as a dressmaker.
    _and_
    I've seen interesting speculation that the rap narrator guys were added to the film after principle photography. Apparently they're always kind of in their own frame, and they definitely stick out from the rest of the movie.

    Ok, this movie seems to have a setting problem. What time period is this meant to be set in? There are horse drawn carriages and architecture from 18th century, instruments like a modern brass saxophone which is 19th-20th century, clothing that is more 15th-16th century, and phrases dating back to the Renaissance with "Hear ye, Hear ye!" On top of that, you have modern day lingo like "cray", "poppin'", etc. So that's different elements from an over 500+ year span.
    It's as bad as that 2018 Robinhood movie where the character costumes were all over the place in terms of aesthetics. It had a villain wearing a modern 3 piece suit with a duster, Robinhood who looks like he is wearing a NorthFace jacket with a hood, and his sidekick who looks like he is wearing leftover clothes from the Star Wars prequels.

I think the Prince was mainly to serve as an extra bonus for her, like "Wow, I managed to get out and have fun AND I met a hot guy on top of that" XD
    Basically, just because she wasn't a "strong, badass bossgirl" doesn't mean she wasn't strong-willed and independent. She had an oppressive, abusive homelife but didn't lose faith in herself. If anything, it's a pretty powerful story of escaping abuse and living happily ever after.
    (sorry, this was a weird, long sappy tangent. I just really like the original movie XD)
    [EDIT: Holy crap, I didn't expect this comment to get such a reaction and discussion going. Thanks guys :D)

      People hate classic Disney because of the social norms of today. Boo we don't need a MAN to save us. It actually ruined future disney movies, which is weird that they're now bashing the very movies that paid to CGI everything. I can't speak for everyone else, but when I was younger, I wasn't sitting around pissed at the romance or damsel in distress troupe, I was mad at how much of a huge bitch her stepmothers were, and I wanted to fight the sisters for ripping her dress apart.

      The 1950s Cinderella didn't have much agency in the plot. She needed the mice to make her first dress. Needed a fairy god mother to make the second dress. Needed the mice and dog to get her out of the locked room. The prince did absolutely nothing and didn't even have a name.
      By the way, this new film was not made by Disney, its not a "remake".

    • @autisticscreechling4950
      @autisticscreechling4950 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@kyrtuck Of course the original Cinderella had little agency. She was an orphan who was manipulated for years into living a life of servitude by her emotionally/physically abusive step-family with no real world job skills other than cooking and cleaning and her only friends were mice and farm animals. She had nowhere to go, no one to turn to and no street smarts, so she chose to make the best out of her shitty situation.
      Plus, the 3rd Cinderella sequel (A Twist in Time), where Cinderella actually does everything she could to win her happy ending, retconned everything that happened in the first film altogether anyway, so its stupid to make that argument at this point.

Because despite everything that she's constantly going through (which is a **lot** worse than what they do to ella in this modern take) she remains optimistic and kind. And, she never wanted a prince specifically, she wanted to leave her old life behind and go to the ball, and happened to fall in love there (and she didn't know the guy was a prince then). Idk, imo Disney's animated Cinderella is not some passive, anti-feminist icon or anything, she was just a regular girl who needed another person's help to get away from her horrendously abusive family and found love along the way, nothing wrong with that.

    Perhaps I’m wrong, but gender roles in Royalty were kinda moot once an heir was chosen, it was about the divine right to rule, and royalty were seen as above the common man (or woman). There were plenty of empresses and queens that exercised just as much, if not more power when ruling. Arranged marriages sorta work for this I guess, but even then that was primarily political, and was primarily among aristocracy or to spread a given families influence. You did not question the king or queen, unless you were the court jester, and if you were a possible heir you were mostly worried about avoiding being offed by siblings or other political movers.

      @angelikaskoroszyn8495 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      It really depends. Every country follows (or followed) different rules and so being a heir didn't always protected from gender roles
      Example: in Poland a queen was a king's wife. We've never had a ruling queen but we had one female king. It's complicated. We also had elected kings before democracy was once again popular in Europe. In this case there were no heirs pefiod. Kings had to bribe voters with more and more outrageous promises. For some strange reasons all of the elected kings were male. I wonder why

    • @Aster_Risk
      @Aster_Risk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You're unfortunately wrong. I watch a lot of docs and read a lot about monarchy and the gender matters in most cases.

    • @cathulhu3772
      @cathulhu3772 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Actually no. In Poland there was a period of free elections. Title of king wasn't Inherited by the next of kin, but king was chosen by electorate of nobles - sometimes it was even someone from abroad like Lithuania, Hungary or even Sweden. :)
      edit: it was actually genius in some ways. no incest and morons that came with inbreeding, no stupid dividing of country among heirs, but... nobles were easy to corrupt
