    Learning about this has opened my eyes to how I should be shopping for stuff in general. Too often we ignore what’s going into the products we’re spending money on. If we were more conscious about that, I’m sure our consumption habits would great improve

    Interesting and informative video sir. Thanks. Can you tell me, as a layman, how to identify to tell whether a leather its veg tanned or chrome or combination? What are the signs and how can tell or feel the difference between the three?

You are an artist of leather crafting. My question is, is there a difference between vegetable dyed full grain leather vs. vegetable tanned leather?

    I understand chrome tan leather can cause metal objects stored in it to rust, I.e, knife - pending steel. Correct? Also, I understand chrome tanned leather is best for clothing type items since it holds up to sweat better and more pliable, I.e., shoes or coat.

    • @margodphd
      @margodphd ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They age worse, I think, especially in contact with metal.Double tanned (chrome and veg )leather is best for insoles only. Various finishes like oils and waxes can maintain veg tan in clothing and shoes both, it's just not best as something that will be in contact with water/sweat often.

    Is there a certain “type” of chrome tanned leather that has more stiffness to it, similar to a veg tanned feel? Im trying to make wallets/card holders with thin chrome leather and its too soft to stitch well and finish the edges to look clean and smooth. What type of finished chrome leather will work?

      This is correct!! Even at the "best" tanneries which tan with Chrome III, it is still necessary to be tested at end of production for the absence of Chrome VI Not all tanneries make this test. This information comes from the chemical houses which sell and formulate chemicals for the leather industry. Additionally, in decomposition, Chrome III can be become Chrome VI, poisoning the water supply. Municipalities test for total chrome in water, not chrome VI which is toxic This is the reason that there is an international push for metal-free leather

    This video left me with more questions than answers. Main question is why you think combination is the best? The piece of leather you have on the table there looks like a big mess, and when you fold it, the fold marks stay in. That doesn't seem to be the case with the veg tan or the chrome tan. So why does it do that and why do you think it's so good?

    On the environmental side , all the waste from the Chrome leather process ends up in landfills , in the best scenario, or underground ,poisoning the land and the water like it recently occurred in Italy. Good luck

    I don’t agree with the fact that most of the leather today is a combination tanned leather. I think it depends on where you live. Most of the chrome tanned leather in Europe is pure chrometan. And chrometan coming from Asia isn’t safe at all. Most of the tanneries there still use Chrome VI.

    What is The difference between Full-grain & full vegan or both are same?
    And
    What is crust leather

    • @benjamin.f.b.
      @benjamin.f.b. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      full-grain uses the whole skin basically. That is all of the most upper layer of an animal skin, minus the corium. Full grain leather is generally accepted to be the best and/or most expensive leather there is, however, because it does use all of the most upper layer, it will have the imperfections of the skin included, which adds uniqueness in a way, but also can be not what you are looking for. If you are looking for a very even pattern on your leather, top grain, basically the second half of full grain, with a texture print on it, can be considered superior, all the while being nearly as thick and nearly as nice as full grain. Either way, full grain is as far off from full vegan as possible. More or less, it is the pure opposite of full vegan, full grain is all of the animal skin :D

    Vegetable tanning does not give you a “thicker” leather than chrome tanning. What kind of nonsense is that? Thickness has to do with the animal the hide comes from. It is then split into many different thicknesses.
