- Baelin (Rowan Bettjeman), a simple background NPC in the video game 'Skycraft' has been walking the same route for as long as he can remember. However, his peaceful (and mindless) routine is violently shaken as a short-tempered Adventurer (Ben Van Lier) drags him off his path and into a dangerous quest to escort a mysterious NPC girl named Willow (Phoenix Cross) across the harsh world of Azerim.

The nerd who programmed the NPCs probably made Baelin as a prank. One line. One route. Highest stats in the entire game.
An NPC that you just cannot kill because his part of the environment, like a roc. Invicible because never designed to fight or take any damage.
Baelin kinda reminds me of Aranhir in WoW who is just a shop owner in Dalaran and for some reason he has the highest hp in the entire game, more so than end game bosses 😂

There is something wrong when a crowd funded video has better production value and fight choreography than some actual movies. Really well done guys.

I think indie's try something different, and once they become large, they stick to what works. Same applies to games.

At this point there really is nothing that separates these guys from any other production studio they have the means to employ people that are good at making films and videos. Wouldn't be surprised if they hired a fight choreographer for this. These guys are a lot like robot army. Except better because they're not aussies
Name me one film in the last years that has a better fight choreography (rewatched this one quite a few times now and honestly...no strange moves no things that stick out as making no sense in a real live,... and the fights look organic not like orchestrated dances like in many films the last decade).

Greg the garlic farmer needs an epic quest too, please!
Greg's epic adventure can be seen in short clips and glimpses in the Epic NPC Man series. Chronologically, Greg's story begins when Greg arrives during player character creation and then instructing the movement tutorial, after which the tutorial Greg torments the player with a microtransactions. Then the farmer Greg can be met again in front of his poor hut where he introduces the player to the magical world of Azerim and gives the player the first quest because Greg's sheep have run amok and since then Greg has been involved in many epic head and side quests and is more helpful than Baradur. In Skycraft, you can also meet the merchant Greg, who runs the local shop from time to time, and the tavern Greg, who runs the local tavern from time to time. I recommend watching the series.

I completely agree to this. I would too. I feel like one of those NPCs who can completely relate to this but cannot express it. I am not stupid, nor shy, nor uneducated, I can cry, I can be strong, but it's just when it comes to these "thengs" I just go bmggaaah, even though I feel it so deep in my heart and I have a million other things to say instead of bmggaaah!!!

There was a probably a whole script ready where we'd learn about Baelin's backstory and who he is as a NPC, but Rowan just couldn't remember. :)

Baelin has new dialogue, Balin no longer walks only one route but goes to different towns to fish, Baelin can now sell you fish and will buy only fish, Baelin will sometimes visit the princess

I know it's pointless to post so far down but here's my opinion:
This video proves the worthiness of every cent they get from Patreon or anywhere else. This work shows that they are talented and hard working enough to deserve their end of day self congratulations. Marvel who? The marvel multiverse puts out stuff that's as good as this but with a much higher budget and with expensive cgi effects added in post. Hell their green screen is like the size of Canada or something!

I mostly agree with you, except that marvel isn't even half good as vldl. The last good marvel film was the original spiderman movies imo.
Yeah but VLDL has something that others don't have............. Rowan as he himself had a role in the Avatar movie.
Ever seen Rings of Power? It has a million-dollar budget and yet it still looks worse than indie films. This short movie looks better funded than that.
I like to imagine Baelin was one of the earliest NPCs in the game, and the devs hadn't implemented immunity for NPCs yet so they just gave him absurdly high stats

Some NPC are marked as "essential". Baelin in marked as "critical".
I mean, considering Willow is able to fully understand Baelin, it means there is dialogue programed. Only the players hear the one dialogue line. So I buy into this theory
@@christopherdavidson17 I had a slightly different theory that Willow's ability to understand him was a function of being a "quest" NPC. I notice in other skits that even when the adventurers are "silent" the NPCs can always interpret what they mean. So I figured it's just a function of being a "quest" NPC as opposed to regular NPCs like Greg who still only hear the one line.
@@olandir Greg literally loses his sheep every day and sends people on a quest to retrieve them. He also has a main quest line that escorts adventurers through the whole of the Honeywood area. He's both a quest giver and a quest NPC. And Greg is like the only one with a skit dedicated to going ape shit crazy on Baelin because he won't stop saying the same thing.
It's more or less an "I am Groot" gag, with undertones of them being in the same situation, both being preprogrammed automatons who are trapped on their respective routes. It's at the point where the adventurer is about to kill her because she "dare not stray from the path" that Baelin makes a conscious decision to stray from his and take over the role of the reluctant protagonist. And it ends with him gaining the ability to chose his actions by what he sees as right and wrong without simply barreling down the same route everyday like a robot, oblivious to what is happening to those around him.

Edit: For the few who didn't get it and keep replying with the same explanation, it's a hyperbolic joke, because putting "some of the movies based off of the fantasy mmo rpg genre of videogames, with little references to gamer culture by gamers, are cursed, because we are often too focused on making money off of the masses to make films with a soul that mainly gamers can appreciate" is a little too long and would have ruined the joke.

I can see the bug report now... "Hey, remember when we made that fisherman NPC invulnerable and gave him an attack of 99, so the griefers would stop killing him? Well, if a fighter uses their RECRUIT ability to add him to a party with another NPC... He will finish the entire escort quest himself.
Ever played WoW? They have Gamon in Orgrimar. Everyone used to one shot him, so thy buffed him, now he is a Org raid boss type NPC lol.
I mean theres a speedrun of an rpg game 'Two Worlds' where it only takes 2 mins from a fresh game to kill the final boss and finish the game. Cause the boss is in the starting area for some reason and you can make him aggro the npc villagers.
So how I understand this is: you recruited Baelin, added him to the group, added Willow to the group. Then you attacked Bealin, which deleted the group bond between you, but Willow and Baelin still were allies, so he stayed in the group. Then you attacked Willow and removed your group bond, but Baelin and Willow were still allies, so Baelin carried out the quest to it's completion... it all makes sense to me. It doesn't sound like a bug... but we should still remove the ability to recruit Baelin.

@@FunnCubes Yeah - that was exactly how I saw it in my head. I had typed out half of it, but it made the comment less funny so I kept it short. It was just so amusing that I could imagine this being an actual bizzare bug in a complex game. "You can't RECRUIT npc in-town, so this wasn't an issue until the rescue quest was added to that zone, which meant Baelin's pathing now puts him "out of town" for about 30s"
Part of what made this so enjoyable is that it keeps the underlying MMORPG mechanical framework, without feeling the need to point it out every time. Like, the villain/NPC dialog referencing "adventurer"... because why would they have a speech line for "Fisherman"?

Baelin appears to be a very high level Monk, with his legendary quarterstaff glamoured to appear as a simple fishing rod. What a fantastic movie.

It's funny because you can see this in another sketch too. The one where the adventurers put a bucket in-front of him to prevent him from moving and keep messing with him until one of them actually attacks him, then they get destroyed.

Okay, I know people keep talking about how good the choreography is...and we need to discuss that a little further. That was almost a full minute of a single take of a fight scene from guys who make comedy videos. That in itself is impressive and should be lauded as one of the best action scenes on TH-cam.
It was masterful cinematography and a very excellently choreographed fight.

Baelin is that unkillable, badass tribute NPC that the developers put in as a memorial to some friend, or someone who helped develop the game, that passed on due to some accident and all he ever wanted to do was go fishing in his free time.
That's what I taught. But don't need to be memorial but they just wanted to have game more alive

It’s incredible how that one line that was annoying i. The first 5 minutes, ended up not being annoying through the whole production. Well done to the script writers as well as the actors and editors and all involved.

Isn't it funny that VLDL's budge was not even 1/135th the amount of things like Lord of the Rings but they managed to produce a much enjoyable film that was a quarter the length? It goes to show you, that audiences don't care about fancy CGI; we care about great acting, beautiful shots and a great story.

Fan theory: Baelin was actually programmed as an elite warrior NPC intended to be a recruitable companion for the player but, during testing, he was found to be so overpowered that he was game-breaking, which led to him being hastily re-skinned as a fisherman. The rush to edit his character meant he was only given a few dialogue options which is why he can only speak his catchphrases. The experiences he goes through here are causing his original character to resurface as his programming tries to adapt to the situation.
That's a theory I can get behind

I'm Brazilian, I love all the videos on this channel, this video was certainly one of the best I've ever seen in my life, the guys managed to put drama and emotion into such a simple but at the same time incredible video. I confess that the combination of soundtracks made me cry, this is a work of art.

This is absolutely magnificent. Everything about it, from the script (Alan, you're incredibly cool) and the acting (everyone did great, Ben is on fire) to the landscapes.
And yes, this is one of those cases where even the fight scenes are done better than in half of Hollywood action movies.

My favourite part of this is that Baelin basically followed the classic Hero's Journey. Status quo, call to adventure, refusal, discovery, point of no return.... all in just 30 minutes, and seven words (plus gaffaw). Nice.

Baelin is a leftover essential character from the beta i think one of those repurposed npcs who used to be main quest characters in an unreleased version of the game.
The true masterpiece is Rowan being able to display a full range of emotions while only saying one sentence.

I think the fisherman was an adventurer ncp back in the beta tests and now is a fisherman.
