    I manufactured that engine. I was a manufacturing engineer at Navistar when we built the 7.3L Powerstroke for Ford. It was a "black box" product. Ford gave us the performance goals and we designed and built the engine. It has forged crank and rods (until rods were later changed to powdered forgings), the cam was machined from billet steel and the block and heads were cast and machined in our factory in Indianapolis along with the cam, crank and rods. We produced one engine every minute. After the 6.0 fiasco Ford started working to developing their own engine. Navistar turned away from quality to cost cutting and ruined their own engines. I believe Ford's first engine was the 6.7 (I left Navistar after the 7.3). The corporate atmosphere changed. When the 7.3 was being produced we believed we were the premier engine manufacturer, we were the best at what we did and we made the best engine. Even the hourly guys had the ability to halt the production line when they saw a quality problem. And they took pride in what they were producing. After the 7.3L all that changed and making a cheap engine was the goal.

      7.3 was "reliable" because it was so modestly powered. 6.0 is much faster and can hold much more power but has additional design flaws that come with that.
      7.3 can't hold the power the modern and 6.0/6.4 diesels had without a complete rebuild.

    I don't think it's fair saying "All new ford's are junk" the first iteration of 6.7 powerstrokes (2011-2013) were, in my opinion, better than the 7.3. Longevity, power load, and flat out reliability. I've heard of people with 2018+ powerstrokes having issues. But that's the third iteration of the 6.7, stick with 2012 superdutys if you want to upgrade from a high mileage 7.3.
    My 2012 was bought with 200 miles. I've now got almost 400k. The only service I had, was replacing my Def tank 4 years ago. That's it. Still using the original Mastercraft batteries too.
    If you want a powerstroke, stick to these years, and just stay away from 6.0/6.4s all together...
    1998-2003 or 2011-2013.

    Just wanted to point out a small mistake, not ragging on you just wanted to let you know. The 6.7 is not a twin turbo engine from the factory. It is a Single VGT turbo in the valley. The 6.4 was a compound turbo engine. The early 6.7 engines had a twin scroll turbocharger where it had 2 inlets for the compressor housing and the compressor wheel was 2 sided. It was a very interesting setup.

    I had a 97 F350 CrewCab Dually 7.3 w/5-speed. 580,000 miles on it.
    -It had high performance turbo, injectors, oil pump, fuel system, clutch, and all supporting modifications.
    I daily drove that truck for 3 years, towed with it, and put 93k on it.
    During its lifetime, I don't think I ever saw it get below 16 MPG with an avg of 18-21 MPG. All fuel stops, mileage, and receipts recorded.
    An exception would be when I towed a mobile home and left it running overnight in the winter to sleep with heat. That trip was 10~ MPG.
    It leaked some oil.
    The only thing that broke was a fuse due to a fuel bowl heater short.
    That's it.
    Tell me a 7.3 with power can't be reliable. I'll wait.

    All we used until three years ago was 7.3’s and they pulled anything we hooked up to. We tried a duramax. And it did okay. Pulled well but that’s about it. We traded it in before 100000 kms. And we now have a 6.7 powerstroke and it hasn’t had any problems yet. And one thing I hate when people say Is “you need horsepower to pull” you don’t! Unless you don’t know how to pull a load. The 6.4L was a "twin turbo" diesel 2008-2010. My folks had one. It didn't have any problems but was traded in on a 6.7L before it could. The 6.0 they had before the 6.4 blew up on the guy that bought it after it was traded in. Lasted a week and head gasket went. They are on their 2nd 6.7L now with zero issues with them.

      snsproduc it’s somewhat worth it. The diesel variants of these cars are crazy nice. I’d pay 10-12.5k. There was an accident on file and slight rust. It’s a great car in pretty good shape, I just can’t justify spending 15 on this one, especially as a college student. Try upgrading the 7.3 to the 475hp and 1000+ torques or whateva they're putting out now and see how poorly it holds up, oh and replace the trans while youre at it as it'll blow in a few thousand miles.
      When you consider how much more capable these new trucks are, quite, cleaner (supposedly), add the aluminum body and all the new available features and the refinement (better ride and handling for example) the reliability is pretty damn solid. The prices when you take all that into consideration along with inflation arent as bad as people make it seem either.

      @@shanet7511 That's what I'm saying, glad to see someone else who has common sense. Modern cars are expensive, but that's because they're just better. More powerful, reliable, safe, efficient and advanced to name a few improvements. The only real downside with modern cars is they're harder to repair, but they break way less so it'd a trade off I'm willing to accept.

    • @KB-bh9hp
      @KB-bh9hp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shanet7511 The 6.7 is an absolute beast, that, the 3.5 ecoboost and 3.5 duratec, 5.0, 5.2 and 2.7 are all great engines. The duratec 3.5 v6 in my Explorer is regarded as an extremely reliable engine, aside from some water pump issues that mostly impacted older versions of the engine so my 2017 should be fine.

    • @justinanderson181
      @justinanderson181 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If we are being honest most modern cars last a long time with basic repairs. My neighbor has a Dodge Caravan from 2010 and has 270K on it and everyone shits on dodge for bad engines and transmissions. And my Chrysler 200 is on 130K with no major problems so far. Worst thing is the interior quality but other than that it runs great.
