Xenoblade 2 is a game where the cast is full of broken people. Rex carries with him a childlike innocence, but he is not ignorant. His backstory is a mirror to Amalthus, in that he lost his parents and became a salvager. While Amalthus gave into his Nihilism, Rex believed that he could find meaning by helping aleviate the suffering of others. I liken him to Alyosha from The Brothers Karamazov, in that he fits into that same holy fool archetype. Most people have been conditioned to think that sort of character is 'mid' or 'cringe', but maybe we can learn a lesson from someone who tries to see the good in all people.

THIS SO MUCH! I think what helped Rex avoid nihilism in the first place was aiming at Elysium. But when he found Elysium was fake, it was his belief in helping others that carried him. I think Rex even cured Klaus's nihilism when he told him "thank you for giving us all life." YOU COULD SEE IT IN KLAUS'S FACE BRO!!

Yeah, right? I never got that ether. It seems to be more like a meme than anything real. I remember some "talking points" from the time when 2 was pretty new that Rex was in comparison with Shulk exactly not doing good like "he's no Shulk" and I thought already: "right, he is Rex, duh". People couldn't take him seriously because of his design (age and outfit) and his voice acting. I never compared him to Shulk because 2 was my entry in the series and I loved all the main characters and antagonists like in no game before. When I played DE and 3 I compared the worlds, the music, the gameplay and all, but to compare characters from games seems somewhat immature to me. Interesting that people who don't like Rex for being immature act so themselves lol.

Rex is the best Xenoblade protagonist, hands down. And I mean kid Rex.
And (extremely hot take here) his english dub is GOOD. I love his english voice! That one scream sounds a little silly, yes, which I think falls more on the voice director than the voice actor here, but that's such a minor thing to me - the rest of his voice work totally nails the tone & heart of Rex and shines through in such a wholesome, optimistic, youthful and naive (ie. yeah kinda dumb) way that totally works.
His grown up version in Future Redeemed is totally fun and I'm fine with it, but I really want some justice for kid Rex who is actually great.

From I have seen others tend to exaggerate his flaws to the extreme, or oversimplified his character missing his actual personality. I have seen many claim he is too dumb and a generic anime protag main character. When he is really not. He he is actually quite smart and more self aware than most give him credit for. He show a lot empathy compared to other Xeno protags. I guess his genuine optimistic views on both life & people rubbed many the wrong the way. Some even claiming to want a more serious or mature character. There were even some that criticasize his forgiving nature as a flaw and seem to misunderstand the whole point the story was trying to make with using him as its lead character.

  • @FlipzMCL
    @FlipzMCL 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I think the "issue" is that Rex is a particular anime trope character played 10000% straight; no twist, no subversion, what you see is what you get, which rubs a vocal subset of people the wrong way. The thing is, those people are missing that Rex being straightforwardly who he is is the _point;_ Xenoblade 2 takes a generic, straightforwardly optimistic anime protagonist, hands him effectively unlimited power, and puts him in a deeply flawed and corrupt world, and then takes the consequences to their logical conclusion: his nearly-unbreakable optimistic determination shattering his antagonists' cynical worldview and ultimately transforming the whole world for the better. People wanted Rex himself to be the twist (i.e., to be a subversion of the tropes he represents), but instead the twist is how the _world_ ends up responding to him -- it's just that by the time it actually happens, a lot of people have already tuned out and quit the game.
As far as the voice acting: due to the frankly _bizarre_ way that everything was recorded, the voice acting in Xenoblade 2 starts bad but consistently gets better and better with time, as the VAs get more settled into their performances and figure out who their characters are. It's really unfortunate that it happened that way, though, since that means Xenoblade 2 ends up putting its worst foot forward on first impression, again leading a fair chunk of people to quit before they can get to the best parts.

Remember xenoblade 1 had a really deep fanbase so when this game was announced out of nowhere people where hyped. After years of praising adam howden for his top tier voice work on shulk, to finally turn on this game and get hit with "aaaiyah" each time he took a swing in the cutscene, it was just goofy. Plus i think perhaps the accent was a bit too much for most people, even for english voicing that accent is pretty strong. Honestly its even more emphasized cus the voices for the rest of the cast was pretty top tier, his just needed better direction i think to give a better first impression

I was with you until the last point. I am replaying XC2 now as we speak and the Voice acting is SHIT all around. Whether it's the acting or direction - almost all of the main party is straight up bad at worst and mid at best. The only actually good voice acted character (imo) in the whole main party is Tora. He's the only one that sounds natural with his emotions (for a Nopon). The rest have their faults. In XC1 I could only say this about Melia, and in XC3 I can only say this about Sena, and neither were as bad as any of the XC2 main cast. Back when I was playing it for the first time I thought that only Rex has poor voice acting/direction. How wrong I was. Literally one of the worst voice acted game I have heard ever, and that's coming from a big XC2 fan. If people can't play this game strictly for this, I completely understand and justify them.
Edit: I do believe the lack of voice direction is to blame since basically almost every character in this game suffers from a poor voice acting imo. No way Monolithsoft just accidentally casted a whole voice cast of untalented people lmao

I kind of hated Rex before playing through Xenoblade 2, but after completing it, he is now one of my favorite protagonists. When you first unlock Pneuma and see Rex's updated character portrait, his new outfit/pose just showered with confidence and determination to me and made me love his character. I was actually surprised by how excited I was to see Rex in Xenoblade 3 when compared to Shulk, especially since I like Shulk so much as a protagonist as well.

I have a feeling most people who hate Rex either got their perception from the first 20 hours of the game or are going off of general assumptions about the character. (ie. How a lot of JRPG protagonists come off as overtly positive so therefore to their eyes, Rex must fit the same mold)
It definitely shows who's played the game and who hasn't when talking about Rex since despite what might be on the surface. Rex plays well into the themes of Xenoblade 2 where the world is overtly nihilistic and Rex acts as a light in the darkness trying to find answers and fix the worlds problems

  • @mr_yoru5834
    @mr_yoru5834 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Rex's character development comes from his immaturity. He starts out so positive and confident because he's a kid who doesn't yet understand his limitations. It takes really getting beaten down by Jin and failing massively for him to realize that he isn't invincible and it almost breaks him. It takes his friends to pull him back. He's not as perfect as people act. Maybe those people who hate Rex that much didn't make it that far into the game.

It comes from an inability to understand why his optimism impacted the world of Alrest. At least, that's how I see it.
Choosing to see him in a surface-level way. When there's so much depth to who he is. I still can't believe how much growth he went through. People love him in FR simply because he's grown up and looks cool.

I loved Rex as a character even early on in the story, he has the perfect attitude to things and his arc can be boiled down to a beautiful "you can't pour from an empty cup" message. Screams aside, the casting did perfectly fit the attitude of his character. Where I hold an issue is his goofy design, I respect the concept of him keeping his scuba diver type outfit on so he is instantly recognizable as a blue collar boy who works with the sea, but it only feels like the helmet is prominent but not the rest. While I love Xenoblade 3's story more, I prefer Rex to Noah and Shulk as I value vivid characterization, Rex has that, I would probably enjoy Matthew more if he had more screentime.

Imo most of them are one or a combination of: He seemed generic on surface. We were all young. We were jealous. We were so wrong.
It took someone on Enels discord to really show me that there is a lot more depth to him. And I'm glad about that because not only did it explain even more about certain writing descisions and change my view of scenes. It hits different when Rex tells Pyra at the End of the Uraya Arc that he will take her to Elysium when you know what its all about for her. And it makes the scene where he wants to just quit even better.
If anything, yes, Rex is generic on surface. But. He starts out as the typical adventurer shonen protag who again and again is faced with the reality that there is no black and white, that there is no guranteed happy end, that the world is just way too complicated. And if we look at how he turned out in Future Redeemed - I think thats full circle of a good growth. Adult Rex is like young Rex but knows more and how to tackle things better. He only gotta figure out how to deal with someone that is even more difficult at times than Mythra lol.

He wasn’t a driver, he was just a normal kid that got put into the situation, and it makes sense that he wouldn’t have a crazy voice. People comparing him to Shulk like Shulk wasn’t a literal god. It makes more sense for Rex to be rough-around-the edges and inexperienced but get better as the game progresses, which his VA does. By the end, he sounds much better and his VA sounds way better. Logically speaking, it works well.

Someone that doesn't want to help fighting grows to understand when he must rise to fight his own war because conflict is always a part of the world, but you can do something about it.

@@paragonoftorna2548 A lot of people think Superman is boring because of his powers or good nature, but there's a lot that can be played there.
The Superman Animated series for example really showed what you can do with his character. While he doesn't fail in his moments of trial, that doesn't mean he never had them. And with villains like Darkseid, a villain that's hypnotized him to terrorize Earth, killed a friend that saved his life, and has continued to influence parts of Earth, it really puts his vision of a hero to the test.
One of my favorite scenes in that show is Superman talking about why he needs to be Clark Kent, because if he was always Superman he'd go insane.
There's so much to unpack with his character when you think about what it really means to be Superman and why he has things in his life or does what he does. That's just subtle character writing, similar with Rex and his aspirations for higher things since the sky was the limit growing up.

I love this comparison to Superman. When I think of the 70s movie version, one of the threads is Lois Lane being cynical (as a reporter should be) and acting as a surrogate for the people under his protection, and Superman shows through selfless acts of service a better way to be even when things are hopeless. Acting as an Icon.
Rex does similar acts of support and subtle moments of acknowledgement when people have made positive attitude changes.

You make good points. Rex is great. I love Xenoblade 1,2 and 3. I started with the original wii game, and it's still my favorite. While 2 has more characters (blades) and a lot of voice acted dialogue/ and 3 has an emotional story and good cutscenes and amazing characters and music, 1 in my opinion has deeper lore, has a better fascinating world, many outfits not dlc paywalled, still great characters, still fantastic music, a massive affinity chart that would change with the quests and people you talked to, better gem crafting, skill links, great collectepedia, upgradable arts locked to each character making them unique as well as unique dialogue that will sometimes play that's different for all the different combinations of the 3 characters you choose out of the 7. I've debated if I still like the Wii version over definitive, and I think I do. Cause while definitive edition makes a ton of great changes, the wii version seems more mature for some reason, shulks artwork looks like hes older than definitive edition, the wii version doesn't hold your hand, (which is good and bad depending on what you like, quest markers and such being so obvious) and this one might be more risque but certain physics on a female character were either removed or made very unnatural in definitive edition. And Definitive edition while beautiful, in some ways looks more cartoony like, I've noticed like when i'm looking out across bionis leg at the mechonis, in many ways I actually like the wii version better, the fade in is better or idk, like mechonis looks more distant in wii version or something, more realistic arguably, but they are both beautiful no matter which you play, and to be fair I also started with it first so there's def some nostalgia, they are all great games in their own right. I'm also glad that definitive edition came with future redeemed. Sorry I got off topic. lol love xenoblade.

Suggesting they either didn't play the game or weren't paying as close attention to the story. The worst of it comes i think from Xenoblade 1 fanboys. Not even fans generally of xenoblade as a whole or the greater xeno series.

Despite what I'm saying I really like this youtuber and a take on my second favorite game won't change anything. He isn't aware about xenosaga because he called Telos a secretary and also he said Monolith soft should have done an anime instead of a game (which is what they did with Saga and it was fine).
Also poeple who are mad at the end because Rex is gifted with the resurrection of Pyra Mythra don't understand the point.
The story place him in the same place as Jin. Having the choice non granted of being with another but similar person or going with that person and slowly fade away wishing for more time.
It's because Rex decision Pyra and Mythra are back and it would make a bit more tragic but fitting if they were amnesic.
Now I love Rex especially child Rex because of his enthusiasm in a cynical world. If you don't like him you are maybe cynical.

The voice acting was.. Subpar and I found his overall character boring on my first playtrough. Every time I started to enjoy him more, a awful line would play or a cutscene would just make me roll my eyes. The moment where pyra is kidnapped and rex just gave me just... Confused me. Because their lives were linked so why would he give up?? Now it's been a few years and I replayed xc2 a fair amount of times before xc3 came out. Tldr: Rex worship in the world of xc2 . Real life Rex worship makes this argument only be filled with people who agree because XC2 is the favored franchise game at this point. I wish people would examine how characters in other media who fill similar roles to Rex in the story (Tidus FF10, Zack FF Crisis Core, Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia) to understand why him being "A unwaveringly optimistic individual in the face of a desperate society" isn't as deep as they think or handled that well by itself.
As the perspective of someone who's indifferent to him and prefers his inclusion in XC3 FR over his main game appearance. My answer is that he's far too simple for the amount of unsimple conflicts he seems to give answers to and leave people dumbfounded like he's a genius philosopher. I genuinely think the scene with Jin's death is one of the most condescending speeches given to a villain in a while. It doesn't address any of Jin's legitimate qualms of the nature of blades and their role in society beyond admitting that they serve to act as maids/tools for humans. It's infuriatingly cruel and to act like Jin is supposed to be remotely impressed by such an answer is imo asenine given the real issue of blade/driver relationships that the game as a whole imo basically sidesteps. There's hints of it throughout the story/sidequests yes but it's rarely a topic explored in depth enough for me to consider it fleshed out.
The second issue imo then stems from Rex as a protagonist and him overshadowing Pyra and Mythra. I believe XC2 doesn't flesh out its most importantly leads enough by itself and I can point to people hating Mythra yet praising Pyra prior to Torna as proof. Mythra was and always is the deuterogonist of the story and is the first major twist of the narrative. Unfortunately I believe her arc of depression is among the most poorly executed because her relief of depression falls at the hands of Rex accepting her rather (or saying he loves her) than her accepting herself. Chapter 7 as a whole being a Nia focused chapter and of her development rather than Rex's I think best illustrates my gripe. Rex doesn't learn anything in the spirit crucible. He doesn't mature, he doesn't have a change in perspective, he only learns of Mythra's issues through Adam but that doesn't change the fact that I am in no way ever going to be convinced he would ever have not accepted her prior. Some point to Jin's comment in chapter 6 about disregarding Mythra but that is the most out of left field conflict that can be brought up. Again the argument in favor of this comment being remotely reasonable is that Rex pushed Mythra in chapter 5 a bit before Haze showed up and the fact that Mythra showed up at the end of chapter 4 in the first place. To which I retort, in Chapter 5 it was a party decision to investigate the factory and they didn't expect to run into Torna (either way at that point it's fight or die) and in the first he was a novice driver and was careless in actions but not careless in feelings nor did he know of Mythra in general. At just about every moment he was listening to her and friends. Rex's flaws are not something I'm ever sold on because if the flaw is meant to be immaturity or carelessness neither is especially substantive nor does it (again) explain why Adam's lesson was about accepting Mythra rather than maturing.
Imo Rex should have been the one captured and Mythra should have undergone chapter 7 with the rest of the cast. As for Nia her moment with Rex could have easily been better set up in the earlier 5-ish chapters where a lot doesn't really happen that drives the characters or narrative. Or in/around very late chapter 7-8 though I must admit that would be difficult.
This leads to my last point and why I am actually bothered that fans of Rex seem to chalk up his criticism as a lack of understanding. I understand Rex very well he's not meant to be complex he's largely static and is meant to be because the main conflict in the face of the narrative is how unwavering his will and principles are. My issue is that the fans and the game don't agree on his role and the role he serves imo undermines other more important characters in the narrative. He's basically transcended a character and become a fanfiction to a lot of the fans and at this point that's why it's hard to critique with Rex lovers because like fans of anything it feels like the goal post of who he is and his role in the story is always shifting to something that's not backed up by the literature or I'm told I don't get it when there's nothing to get. Conversely Rex in FR is exactly what XC2 fans deny him being. He's simple, has simple answers but is cheery and accepting but his flaws as a father are on full display and hell we SEE him ask for other's input on something he has no ideal answer to. I love that. Rex's growth in the short interactions we get in FR are so much more impactful because of it. Because he's not just handwaved the tough questions. He gets real philosophical wins but also admits to losses. Again his answer to Jin was eggregiously bad and people don't talk about it much.
Suffice to say there's much more but this is already long enough and covers my main points of discontent.

I don't think Rex's speech to Jin was as bad as you say. He wasn't telling him that Blades are supposed to clean up the mess that humans make. He was saying that when you see the world in a dismal state, you should be responsible for the things you can do to help it. And Rex doesn't just say this, he walks the walk. He emphasized the strength that blades have in the dynamic because that was Jin's moral conundrum. Rex told Jin that a blade can find purpose by empowering humans to make the world better, so much so that he was actually jealous of them.

@@jacobmonks3722 When you phrase it like that it sounds far better than it really is but when we look at the speech itself... He rightfully claims that someone else will fight for good. But the nature of the blade shouldn't be to exclusively fight for good and again this doesn't address the inherent problem. BLADES CAN'T CHOOSE THE FIGHT. The human trait of being able to pass down your thoughts and ideas is present but blades in being treated as tools don't really have the means of conception (prior to Klaus making it so they can) they can't have lineages, they have to simply obey the will of their master.
There is a chance their master will be kind enough to grant them some independence but it doesn't change the fact that they lack their memories and are new people with a lack of moral understanding each time only subtly influence by their driver's already established personality. Rex basically gives an answer for why humans have to be better but again Blades are as always treated like objects and it shouldn't be their responsibility to take care of the world even if they had their memories. (Hence Jin's appalled statements in every other moment of the game.)

@@jairekambui7738 Again XC2 fan proves my point of boiling their argument to "You didn't understand" Are you sure YOU didn't understand the fundamental flaws of the narrative? Again address why Rex's speech is worth its salt. Address the writing qualms of Mythra accepting herself through a male entity that has nothing to do with her insecurity. It's easy to state I misunderstand but it's hard to actually write a worthwhile rebuttle and every comment and like you get just adds to my main point that XC2 fans don't want to discuss the narrative because they ether A) can't properly defend it. B) in bad faith don't care to actually make a discussion about its flaws.

@@janrosa7243 You seem to be confusing your disagreement with the philosophies presented in the game with being bad or poor resolutions. Mythra finding herself through Rex is important and goes back to her relationship with Addam in Torna. The point was that she began to value her power instead of fearing it because of Rex’s influence. This goes back to Jin and his issues with Blades in the game. There is no answer for Jin’s questions presented in the game, because Klaus intended for blades to be a new element introduced in his world ecosystem that would be intrinsically linked to humans in order to give them inherent companions and potentially stop humanity’s inevitable charge into conflict. War ruined the old world, so he believed that giving people companions with blades would offset it. This philosophy is echoed in Rex’s words to Jin in the end, and as Jin reflects on his experiences with Lora, he resolves to protect the way things are instead of violently dismantle everything. In the end, Jin believes that the nature of Blades as people to reign in humanity and protect the future by helping them steer towards the right direction is something worth dying for.

I genuinely sometimes think some people played a completely different series of games from me, because the way people talk about Rex and specifically in comparison to Shulk, have always felt so completely incongruent with the actually reality of the games that it boggles the mind a tad.
The very idea of "Hating" Rex was completely baffling to me when I first became aware of it. And there has not been a single explanation why that makes even a modicum of sense to me. I've seen people say things like "He's so stupid" and I'm like, when? When does Rex make all these "Dumb choices" people keep harping on about? When he takes the job from Bana? yeah, because when in history have teenagers working to support themselves and their families ever taken high paying jobs without knowing the details? And it's not like the game has Gramps tell him it's a bad idea or anything. Is it because he doesn't run when told to by Vandham? Yeah because when in this series has a protagonist ran headfirst, screaming rage at a much more powerful combatant he has no hope of beating all because they killed someone close to him? Yeah its a good thing Xc1's whole plot isn't literally that exact scenario for most of the first half.
I've heard people say, "Rex does the bare minimum and gets tons of female attention". Og you mean like how He goes out of his way to save Nia's life multiple times at great personal risk and zero reward to himself, despite the fact that she was part of the group that literally stabbed him in the back. When Nia gets caught by Morag, Rex has zero incentive to rescue her, considering he and Pyra are already wanted and going to save her would offer them no benefit and tons of risk, and he still does it simply because it's the right thing to do. And after he does and she tries to leave, he convinced her to join them, not because he needs her power, but because he considers her his friend.
And in terms of Pyra and Mythra, yeah, why would they take any interest in a guy who risks life an limb constantly for their benefit, maintains a constant level of respectful encouragement and appreciation of not just their struggles, but also their interests, opinions and choices.
The thing that especially drives me nuts about all this is the way Rex is negatively compared to Shulk. I don't like trying to bring XC1 down in order to bring Xc2 up, because I recognize its hypocritical to do so, but considering how often these talking point get brought up, I feel I have no choice most of the time. I simply cannot understand the hype Shulk gets. This is the most often where I feel people played a completely different game from me, because Shulk in Xc1 is dull as dishwater. A character arc is a character starting one way at the beginning and undergoing change to become a different person by the end. Shulk is the same person at the start of Xc1 as he is by the end. Shulk undergoes no large scale change of perspective behaviour of attitude. People describe Shulk as having this "rage fuelled desire for revenge", and its like, who? Shulk? the guy who politely accepts when the Emperor tells him he can't go to prison Island? The guy who rationally listens to the machina and just trusts them completely when they claim to be on his side? The guy who keeps trying to reason with Egil the Architect of all his misfortune? This is the guy driven by a "Irrational bloodlust for vengeance?" This milquetoast nice guy? The scene that completely breaks any idea that this description of Shulk is accurate the fight with Mumkhar in Sword Valley. That whole scene is backwards through and through. It does not make sense for Dunban to be talked down by Shulk. Shulk literally came out here to kill Mumkhar and he's the one being rational and telling Dunban to use his head? How exactly am I supposed to care about Shulk sparing Egil when I already know he's going to do it, because he sparing Mumkhar earlier? The game just replays the same character beat again, like we don't already know how it's going to play out.
Unlike Rex who job as a salvager is a vitally important part of his character and comes up very frequently, Shulk's mechanical knowhow stops existing the minute he leaves Colony 9. He find himself in a giant ether mine and has nothing to say about the machines involved. He finds himself in a floating city and has nothing to say about the technology involved. He find himself inside the mechonis, the biggest most complex piece of technology ever to exist and meets a race of bio-mechanical organisms, all things he should be chomping at the bit to study and understand and he has nothing to say about any of it.
And its just bizzare to me that people would complain about Rex getting Nia's attention, when Shulk had literally no reason to be sought by Either Melia or Fiora. Fiora is a nothing character with no greater personality, character arc or internal motivation. You cannot describe Firoa as character without mentioning Shulk, Reyn or Dunban, and the game uses the childhood friend thing as an excuse to not explain why she likes him. But Melia is especially egregious, because her liking him makes no sense what so ever. Where Rex saved Nia because it was the right thing to do and gaining nothing material by doing so, Shulk knows from a vision he needs Melia to get to Prison Island, and his relationship with her is entirely transactional. When Melia asks Shulk not to free Zanza he completely ignores her request and does not apologize later, when it turn out she was right. People complain about Rex not getting Nia's confession, even though in that scenario, it's completely rational for him to interpret that as platonic, and very quickly afterwards figures out what she really meant. Meanwhile Shulk is so completely dense he NEVER picks up on it.
Like I don't like complaining about xc1, but SO much of Xc2 and specifically Rex's hate is framed by Xc1 and it fans. Playing xc2 first and then going into Xc1, and finding that it not only didn't live up to the hype, but finding it had flaws its fans not only ignored but attacked you for bringing up while being insanely toxic about xc2 at every opportunity has made it so hard to enjoy Xc1 for what it is. And that toxicity has spilled over to outside the fandom. I remember I saw someone leave a really bad faith hate comment about Rex on a video and i jokingly replayed "So you just didn't play the game, huh?" but with each reply back, it became shockingly obvious they actually hadn't played any of the games what so ever and just saw the XC3 end photo on twitter, because they could not get into any specifics about the games and any time I pushed for examples they just refused to provide any.
I've grown so sick of feeling disconnected from the reality of these games, because it genuinely feels like there are two Xenoblades. The versions I played the versions they played and I don't know how to reconcile them.
EDIT: read some of the lower replies if you want proof of what I'm talking about

Preach bro, this was a great breakdown of the frustration I feel as well. 2 and 3 are such vastly superior games on virtually every level compared to 1, but 1 has an entire deep fanbase around it because of it’s cult classic status as the best jrpg of the Wii/PS3/360 era. It’s pure nostalgia and hate for something different. I recently replayed 1, so it’s still fresh, and man I really wanted to like the game more but it actually has the opposite effect. I mean come on, the big epic final dungeon is just… going back to prison island? The place where we had that bland death scene with the boring emperor Sorean character that shulk kept mentioning in every “angry” scene despite having no real relationship with him? Incredibly weak. There are so many problems with the game, but the biggest problem in the whole game is the characters and how poorly they’re written. In Xenoblade 2, Rex has an incredibly emotional reaction to the death of the man who taught him how to see the world in a more complex way, to appreciate and understand the nature of blades, and to continue fighting for what he believes in despite acknowledging the humanity of his enemies. In xenoblade 1, Fiora, the most important person in Shulk’s life, apparently died and he gets slightly mad for one scene, then just boringly and emotionlessly goes on a revenge mission that has absolutely no teeth. The death of Fiora doesn’t change him at all. He just becomes obsessed with unlocking the secrets of the monado, same as before, and follows the visions of prison island he’s given. The colony 9 invasion is one of the most overrated intro sequences in jrpg history. Especially on a repeat play through when you already know she doesn’t die. Also spot on with Melia, it hurts her character a lot to have that nonsense immediate crush on Shulk for so long and the fact that Sharla was involved in trying to cheer her on, Christ, just awful. Takahashi learned a lot after 1 that he incorporated into 2 and 3 for sure. Unfortunately 1 suffers from being the test run for his new style of game.

The other thing is the incredibly weak world building. It’s showing that 2 has this fascinating and in depth deep dive into the world, how blades, titans, the cloud sea, elysium, and the world tree work, and Klaus’s ideas behind it, in 3 we get explanations for the frozen time, annihilation events, Origin and Nia and Melia’s plan. How was the world created in 1? Zanza and mayneth came from another world, and needed bodies to inhabit, so they just made Bionis and Mechonis. How? Because reasons. So many things about the world and characters are poorly done in 1 and it’s a shame how many people are too stuck into the original is the best mentality. This is true for some series, but definitely not this one. Xenoblade is a series where the subsequent entries massively improve on the ideas and execution compared to the original.

Some real "well, when in Rome. I'll buy two slaves, please!" energy that never felt questioned.
Obviously there are much worse versions of this trope in anime and i still enjoy XC2 5 years after having played it last, but that's what keeps it from being S-tier for me (it's A-tier on my list, fwiw).

@@omo4941 Disagreed, 2’s ending is exactly what it was supposed to be given the story. 1’s ending is fine but the build up is very weak. 2 has the best final act build up and pay off in the series. Your points about Rex don’t really hold any water either, he’s a great character used well for the purposes of the story he’s in. It’s not besides the point at all, in fact 2’s narrative allows Rex to be more multi layered than the others. He has more moments of vulnerability and emotion than Shulk, and more moments of levity and innocence than Noah. Shulk is actually held back significantly with his narrative.

It’s because Xenoblade 1 fans like to pretend 2 doesn’t exist because 3 is more like their sensibilities. Seriously it’s because a lot of people still don’t like 2 and Rex is the face of it all. I always thought 2 got a unfair rep considering it’s easily the deepest game in the series in terms of world building and philosophical and psychological themes, it’s just the more overt shonen anime aspects and art style that people dislike because they came from 1. Xenoblade 1 is my least favorite game in the series and I think it has a lot of issues that people don’t talk about because people like to hail it as one of the best jrpgs of all time. You don’t see half the hate for 1 despite the issues because 1 seems unobjectionable on the surface. People are shallow and only really care about things on a surface level.

I really do think I would enjoy Xc1 more if it wasn't hailed as the greatest JRPS of all time, because it really isn't even close to being the best of its own series. If the fans were willing to acknowledge any of its flaws with any amount of sincerity it would be so much easier to appreciate the game for what it is. Not for what it isn't but its fan insist it is.

After actually playing it it was honestly a disappointment and while there were things I liked, there was a whole lot I thought was poorly done. I wish the fandom would stop worshipping the game and actually address the various issues instead of being stuck in nostalgia and treating it like some holy grail of jrpgs. I did like him in future redeemed though because his character writing was handled much better than in the base game

This will be an essay with spoilers: In summary people don't like Rex because he's not Shulk. I will be referencing Captain Astronaut (CA) Rex critic in his xc2 disappointment video
First of all, people don't like Rex's design and honestly that's kinda valid. I still think his Master driver design is sick as hell though.
Next, I hear this complaint a lot where Rex is 'never punished and whines and gets his way.' this couldn't be further from the truth. First of all, CA states Rex dies early in and then just comes back life. To that I say if you genuinely thought the PROTAGONIST was going to die in the first hour of the game and stay dead, you're simply just silly. Also of course he 'whines' when he finds out he's dead. Who wouldn't???
Secondly, Rex is punished HARSHLY, Vandam dies, Pyra gets captured and brutally beat up because Rex isn't strong enough to save them. I would argue Rex is punished way more harshly than Shulk. You could make the case Mythra 'bails' Rex out, but again Vandam is 10 feet away on the ground DEAD.
CA makes fun of Rex because he says Rex basically randomly becomes the Master Driver despite not being worthy. Like how does one watch that cutscene and clearly not understand it?? Pyra/Mythra character is shown to be TERRIFIED of their true power that they were willing to kill themselves. Rex PROVES that they aren't weapons of destruction. They are people capable of being loved and deserved to be treated as such. This he is granted their power!
I feel like people just saw Rex bad design, heard a bad scream immediately don't look past it. And FR proves it, when he gets a glow up now everyone loves Rex.

Honestly though, I think the fact people think Rex is some immature child is SOOO fitting. So many characters in the game try to brush off Rex like he's some stupid kid (Morag, Malos, Jin), but he proves he's more than that. He is an incredibly emotional intelligent character and deserves the recognition he's finally getting

The design isn’t even bad, it’s a fun clunker junker like design that looks like he was ripped out of a 90s anime or jrpg. It’s not a cool design, but it’s fun and endearing. Plus it makes sense as his profession is deep sea diving to collect treasures and artifacts. Everyone just wants protagonists that look cool and that’s it. The Cloud strife effect.

    Reasons people hate Rex:
    1. "Rex is stupid"
*No he's not. He's shown to be very sharp and picks up on a lot of things. When overpowered by Morag he's the one that comes up with the idea to use the water tower to turn the tides of battle. He saw from the very start of the game that Pyra was depressed about something and says he sees that same sadness in Jin's eyes too. He's even able to keep up with Tora's techno-babble in a heart to heart, probably as a result of his salvaging work.
He's uneducated for sure, not knowing a lot about world history, but that's because there was no school in Fonsett and the village couldn't afford to send kids elsewhere for schooling. In fact part of the reason Rex started working at the age of 10 and send money home was so the village kids could afford to go to school in Indol and receive the opportunities he never got, and y'all gonna shit on him? Everyone saying that Rex is a terrible character should really ask themselves what they were doing for their family when they were 10 years old.
    2. "Rex is positive and optimistic to the point of being annoying"
*I'll just never understand this one. Being able to look on the bright side is much preferable to giving in to despair whenever things go wrong, right? His positivity is the perfect foil to the villains of the game who generally choose to focus only on the negative which results in their nihilistic world views. His ability to keep on trucking with a smile on his face no matter how rough the going may get is also a large part of the reason Nia, Pyra and Mythra were able to work through their trauma. And it's not as if he's immune to breaking down anyway. In fact if he can't find a silver lining to a situation he gets hit harder than anyone else, as we see in chapter 7. He is only human after all.
    3. "Rex was willing to give up and leave Pyra to her fate in Chapter 7"
*Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if some of the people who complain about this are the same people who cry about him being too positive. Anyway, what do you expect him to do in this situation? He has no idea where Torna have even taken her. And even if he did find them how would he beat them? They weren't even able to stop him with the power of the Aegis on their side, so what hope would they have with them gone? Like Poppi says, this doesn't seem like Rex at all, but that's because this situation seems so hopeless to him that even he can't see a silver lining. His friends are able to bring him back by being there for him just as he was always there from them. And the moment he finds out about the third aegis sword his positivity and determination come back in full force, ready to do whatever he needs to do to save them.
    4. " His voice acting is terrible!"
*Okay, this one I can kind of understand to some extent. The voice acting in general is pretty hit and miss in XC2, probably largely due to the rushed development. I remember hearing that the actors often weren't given context for scenes or sometimes weren't even allowed to do retakes. For the most part I still think the actors did a great job with their voice work despite those issues, but every now and then you get stale deliveries and, in Rex's case especially, some pretty comically bad screams and shouts. Still though, I really thing we should be able to view the character and the voice work as mostly separate things. No need to hate on Rex just because of that, especially since he actually has some really stellar performances during more somber, emotional scenes.
Just between you and me, sometimes I think people just look for any reason to hate on this game in general. I mean, sure, the game is definitely flawed, but some people really exaggerate it's issues or just complain about things they wouldn't even consider issues in games they enjoy. It kinda makes discourse surrounding this game a bit tiresome for me sometimes, so it makes me really happy seeing other people defending it like this.
TL;DR. Rex is cool actually, haters should just stop being wrong!

I don't hate Rex for anything dealing with Rex, exactly. He's a nice little boy, the issue is that they leaned super fucking hard into self insert harem trash in 2. Shulk was a good character, and he had a love interest, and that was completely fine. The rest of the cast largely had their own things going on- They were all independent characters that stood on their own and were so incredibly memorable for that reason. With Xenoblade 2, myself and I would assume others, largely cannot stand the effect that Rex has on the entire female cast, who are in 2 a large part of said cast. It boils down to Rex: Does something so insanely, stupidly, mundanely normal. Every female character in the game: OMGGGGG. It makes me cringe out of my skin and makes me dislike Rex because anything dealing with him I'm just thinking "Golly, I wonder what basic human decency he's going to have women falling all over him for this time".

This is speculation at best, based on a throwaway line where Nia says the Aegis has a nice body in the obligatory hot spring scene. Rex is fine on paper, but he's so frustrating to a lot of people because of all the anime shenanigans, not to mention his abysmal design and ridiculous voice acting/direction. Rex's character arc is there, but it's really nothing special and still felt like super generic platitudes to me by the end of the game. Imo, he's a massive step down from the mature character progression and internal conflict we saw with Shulk, Noah, and Mio.
