First Drive Rok Shifter

  • After all the installation work in the shop was completed, it was now time to drive my new Rok Shifter engine for the first time. How would it feel compared to my old Honda engine? Would I go faster? Tune and see my initial impressions of my new engine!

    I put a GYT Kit on my Yamaha 80 ..the KYT came with a 24 mm Mikini carb.. to replace the 16 mill it came with stock in 1974..
    the Kit eliminated my oil injection pump .. . I should have kept it and ran a high ration of gas premix to make up the difference of the amount of oil the auto lube pump could not keep it.. I more than tripled my HP with porting..
    Leaded Premium gas is what I used back then. The first hot day on a sand track I melted a nice hole in the top of my piston.
    Then Yamaha sent out a memo telling that you need to replace your 180 main jet with a 200 main jet..
    After I did a lot of porting it rain better on a 220 or 230 main jet with the needle jet raised 1 clip position .

    It is great to see you enjoying yourself with this high speed kart. I am like you, of your age as well, and I have a CRG KT2 with a Senior Rotax 125cc.

      Thank you, sir! Still a whole lot of tuning needs to be on the chassis, engine and driver! But, we are getting there!

    Your driving was awesome. I have a question. Sodi karts are they good? I am planning to get one.
    The rok shifter engine you are having performs like a beast. May i know how many Hp? 👍👍👍

      Hello Bala! First of all, thank you for the very kind words and thank you for watching! I am very happy with my SodiKart, it is very nicely engineered and well built. Reliability of the chassis has been excellent-I have not had any problems with welds cracking or anything like that, which is really good news. Like all karts, they will develop a twisted frame over time but if you put the kart on a set up platform, you can re-straighten the chassis to get the twist out of it. If you go to my video on how to align your kart chassis (you can see it here: th-cam.com/video/qNI21wPoK24/w-d-xo.html ), you can see how that kind of work is done, so hopefully that video is helpful to you. As for the engine, I really like it. According to Vortex, the Rok engine makes about 45 horsepower at 13,900 rpms, so it does not have the power of the KZ but it is pretty close. It is very smooth in terms of vibrations, and it doesn't deliver a lot of its power until after around 10,000 rpm, but once you get to that rev range, the power comes on very strongly and the engine pulls like crazy. As a driver, things get very busy in a hurry once the engine crosses that 10,000 rpm line. Hopefully this helps, always glad to answer questions if I can.

    Try a more pronounced lifting of throttle and see if it fixes the up shift problem

      Hello-thanks for watching and thanks for the suggestion! It turns out that the problem was really a problem with the actual shift linkage...the shift lever coming off of the engine itself was too short, so I purchased an extension bracket (it was sort of like USD $30) and that put the shift linkage a bit further down towards the frame of the kart on the engine side of the shift linkage, allowing for a straighter "push and pull" of the gear linkage...that solved my problem. A very simple fix, really, but maybe not an obvious one. It works really well, for sure!

    It seemed as if you "might" (emphasis on "might") be able to grab a lower gear between 8 and 9 ?? It sounded as if the motor was just under the power curve a few RPMs coming out of 9. Otherwise, you have a "rok"et of a kart, dude!

      Gearing is always a challenge with me! Dropping a gear between 8 and 9 is most definitely not the fast way around the track so it must be driver error!

    You guys don't mention it, but the track looked wet (damp) in spots!?

      Yeah, that track has spots that show up on video as if it is wet, but it isn't! It's just the light reflecting off of the sealer they use on the track. Looks really weird at night when you are racing.

      Yes, for sure. We had a break-in jet that made the engine way rich, so we went from a 160 jet to a 142, but it needs to go a bit leaner still. I'm guessing, but maybe a 135
