China's first lunar robotic rover, 玉兔, which explored the moon's surface in late 2013, is adequately named Jade Rabbit.
The rabbit plays a significant role in Chinese mythology and appears in many literature and artwork. It is said that if you look closely at the moon, you will see the silhouette of a rabbit.
The white jade rabbit is a celestial creature that lives on the moon, and said to live in a palace made of jade. The use of the word "jade" is symbolic and is often used to represent purity and immortality. In Chinese culture, jade is highly valued for its beauty and durability, and is believed to have special powers that can protect the wearer from harm and bring good luck. The idea of a jade palace on the moon, where the rabbit lives, is a metaphor for a place of serenity and wisdom, where one can find inner peace and enlightenment.
According to legend, the rabbit is able to make the elixir of life on the moon, by using a pestle and mortar to pound medicinal herbs, a metaphor for the process of refining and purifying oneself to achieve enlightenment and inner peace. The elixir is symbolic which represents the attainment of spiritual perfection and the ultimate release from the cycle of reincarnation. The elixir of life is invoked with the story of Chang’er when she drank it herself, and this is why rabbits are also associated with longevity and immortality.
The Jade rabbit is said to be the loyal companion of the moon goddess Chang'er, who is revered as a symbol of beauty, unconditional love, and sacrifice.
The story of the rabbit is seen as a continuation of Chang'er’s ascent to the Moon, and shares similar qualities of altruism, self-sacrifice, charity, compassion and kindness.
The legend goes that the rabbit was once a mortal, but due to his good deeds and kind-heartedness, he was rewarded by being able to live on the moon.
The rabbit is the only animal in the Chinese zodiac to share a home with the goddess Chang'er in the Moon. The rabbit and Chang’er both have similar qualities of self-sacrifice, compassion, and kindness.
The rabbit on the moon is also associated with the Mid-autumn Mooncake Festival.
Here is the story of the Rabbit.

    nope... try scientific allegory.
    Rabbit represent Fertility
Moon regulates seasons and therefore, mating cycles, ergo: effecting Fertility.and Life-Span of Man, (and all other creatures and plants perhaps)
I believe this to be Allegorical understanding of the Moon's role in our Fertility cycles and that it was not always so... a change happened and it may be cyclical, maybe every 10000 yrs (approx.). It may involve the Moon reflecting Light (Radiation) on certain areas (Hemispheres) of Earth, during certain phases...?
    Cycles within Cycles.
