My favorite story about the zodiac was not mentioned: The cat also got an invitation for the race. Because it is sleeping all day, it asked it´s friend the mouse to wake it up on time. The mouse, knowing that the cat would make it through the river faster than itself, said yes, but did not do it. The result: The cat got up too late and did not make it into the circle. Ever since then, it resents the mouse and catches it whenever it can.
Long ago, the twelve zodiacs lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Jade Emperor, master of all five elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished..
The story I’ve heard was that there were 13 zodiacs the very last being the cat who didn’t make the top 12 because it got tricked by the mouse and almost drowned in the water. Thus explaining why cats hate mice and why they’re afraid of water
The Japanese version is almost identical, but the mouse told the cat the race will be held on the next day of the actual race. The cat, slept over on the race day, realized the race is already over. Thus, cats always chase a mouse and constantly wash (rub) their face not to sleep over. :)

So clear and authentic! That's the version I have heard in my childhood. BTW the pronunciation of 地支 and 天干 is quite right as well as the explanation of the sixty-year-cycled year counting system. (甲子) The LCM of 10 and 12 is 60 That's why a cycle is sixty years
I don't think that it is about the LCM. The idea is much simpler - The cycle of 60 years is composed of the 12 animals and the 5 elements (12 × 5 = 60). Then, there are alternating sets of yin and yang cycles.
@@person.244 60 is correct answer. "Ten heavenly stems" is "甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸" and "twelve earthly branches" is ''子丑寅卯辰巳午未申酉戌亥‘’. The first year is the year of "甲子" . The second year is the year of "乙丑",not the year of "甲丑". "丙寅","丁卯","戊辰" and so on.

In Western astrology, what people think of as their 'sign' refers only to the 'Sun' sign. It's much more complex than that. In Eastern astrology, what people think of as their 'sign' is closely related to the cycles of the Moon. Eastern astrology is also much more complex than that. Why does one tend to focus on the Sun and one on the Moon? Solar and Lunar calendars, for one reason, but there's a deeper reason why Lunar calendars are common in the East. It has to do with Yang and Ying, the fundamental 'opposing' (mutually supporting) forces of the universe. In physics, they're called 'negative' and 'positive.'
I was just saying - In Western Astrology, each sign is for a month. But, in Eastern Astrology, each sign is for a year. Now, in Western Astrology, that is only the sun sign. There is also the moon sign, the ascendant or rising sign, and so on. There doesn't seem to be those sort of things in Eastern Astrology, with only the one sign influence.

Fuhj no matter how hard you try, you’ll never be able to get rid of a western accent when speaking another language. Same with Spanish, French, Russian, any other language you are not familiar with :0 but very noticeable in Chinese, when the spoken words have subtle changes that only a native or first generation could understand and say accurately. (You can also live in a certain country and begin to lose your western accent by immersion, but even people who live there for years can still have traces of non-native accent)

The Chinese Dragon 「龍」 and Naga 「那伽」are very similar but had vastly different origins. The Chinese dragon originated from China (duh) and is not attributed to merely water, there are many dragons in China, some of them controls light, some of them controls lightning, some of them are war gods; and Naga originated from India, they were supposed to only be poisonous mythical snakes that controls water, later Buddhism entered China from India and brought along the mythical stories of Naga, the Chinese translated the Naga 「那伽」as dragon「龍」, and so the two merged, so in China, Naga and Dragon are the same thing.
Naga is not just a poisonous snake, it's a class of cobra or Serpent Gods which is worshipped and considered as protector and benefactor of good people, In Indian myth
Not really, 那伽 is still 那伽 in Chinese. Only Buddhists translate it "dragon" in Buddhist scriptures, and folks still call it Naga, which is one of the gods of Tianlongbabu .
I'm a rabbit and so are most of my friends and I’m half Chinese and seeing the Voice Actor able to pronounce everything in Mandarin correctly just proves how good this channel is.
It didn't stop there. It also deliberately cheated the cat out of the race by not waking it up on time, or outright push the cat into the water, where it nearly drowned, in the versions the cat did participate in the race.
I think in Thailand, we have both concepts for naga(the serpent looking one with no leg) and dragon( Chinese dragon which has legs, the Mushu looking one) so it's not like we can use naga when we're going to say dragon and vice versa. As to which we use in the chinese zodiac, I think we do use both images and we do call it the large snake or the dragon year.
In our country, this calendar plays an important role because the animals can show a part of our characters. It's not always clear because it belongs to spirituality, but I believe that there is a significant connection. For example, people who were born in Horse years are very patient and diligent, not everyone but I have witnessed a lot of people like that.
I'm impressed with how dedicated they are to pronouncing these correctly. I know that Mandarin is a very tonal language and ti seems like this was pronounced very accurately. Great job on Ted Ed's part!
Wow, this version makes some of the animals seem a WHOLE lot less selfish. In the version I heard, they all wanted to come in first; y'know, because it's a race with the prize being a great honor. Of course, that was from the PBS series, "Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat"; IMO, it's one of PBS's best shows.
Most Chinese people don't care about the 60-year cycle but only the 12-year cycle. Also, I've never heard of the inner animal, true animal or secret animal in my life...
In the Chinese Fortune-Telling methodology, Bazi, there are four combinations of sexagenary cycles which correspond to four different representations of your birth time. Inner animal is the animal of your birth month, which determines your personality; while true animal is the birth animal of your birth day, which means your true self; while secret animal stands up for the timing where you were born, which entails the sub consciousness. It exists just in theory, but most of them aren't true. Only those who lack self-esteem seek the truth through this approach.
Just want to point out that the year of birth applied in this zodiac system is based on the Chinese Lunar calendar, not the commonly used Gregorian calendar. For example, 1990 is labeled as the year of horse and 1991 is labeled as the year of sheep in the video. That is not accurate since 1990/1991 is the year index from the Gregorian calendar. I was born in January 1991, which was right between the global new year day and the Chinese new year day. Therefore my zodiac is still horse not sheep, even though most people born in 1991 have sheep as their zodiac.
Yea the cat told the mouse to wake the cat up for the zodiac race because its a first come first serve basis the first 12 animals will get to race but the mouse did not thats why cats hate mouses
Your information is so much authentic.I was seaching about it for long and finally found a valid video..I want you to discover more and upload another video about it...Its a request
Revanaught No, not really. Chinese dragons are associated with the forces of nature, water in particular, a lot. Stuff like typhoons, waterfalls, floods, and rain
Naga is dragon for the Asian people, but it's actually very different from the Western dragon so i just call them Naga. Chinese Naga is like a giant snake with 4 legs and can fly using magic. South East Asian Naga is a giant snake with no leg sometimes with many heads and can also fly (originate from Hindu mythology). Western dragon is a giant lizard with 4 legs and 2 wings.
Aan Juanda your moon sign is what people think of you as and your rising sign is what you feel on the inside or smth? I may have accidentally swapped them around but you can search on google for more info
Western astrology is not constellation based. It just uses the names of the constellations. It's a system based on the position of the Sun relative to us (Tropical)
In my country, Thailand, Naga not same as dragon. Naga means one of Legendary creature that found in Thai's Buddhism. It is a very big snake which always do 8 precepts.(normal people should do only 5 precepts). They have human form. Sometimes We see it in front of the temple. P. S. Sorry for my English... P. S. 2 Naga story is very interesting for me. You can find it when you read Garuda(krút)'s story or Sermon on the Three Worlds(Buddism).
Naga, in folklore, were large serpent-like creatures that slightly resembled Chinese dragons, although they were distinct deities. The two are not hard to distinguish; if it looks more like a snake (sometimes with several heads, but still a snake), it's usually a Naga. Sure, there were depictions of Naga that resembled dragons, but for the majority of folklore, especially that of Hindu or Buddhist origin, Naga were serpentine creatures. You can imagine a Naga as a dragon-like snake deity. In technical terms, Naga is sanskrit for Indian Cobra, although in modern Indonesian it translates to Dragon instead.
It depends also in what month you were born, because the traditionnal Chinese new year's day is around the end of January and the beginning of February. So you may be born in 2007 but if you were on the beginning of the year, it might be a different sign than the rest of the year. Hope that makes sense ^^
Thomas DYOUX you're actually correct though. Here's an example: My dad was born in early January and his animal was a dragon and even though my mum was also born in the same year as my dad she was born later in may and now, her animal is the snake. It is also some reasons why some Chinese call the month August, '七月' which means 7th month even though august is the 8th. As the Chinese calendar is about half a month behind.

So clear and authentic!
That's the version I have heard in my childhood.
BTW the pronunciation of 地支 and 天干 is quite right as well as the explanation of the sixty-year-cycled year counting system. (甲子)
The LCM of 10 and 12 is 60
That's why a cycle is sixty years
OHHH THANK YOU I was confused because I would think 10x12 is 120 but that makes sense
@@nathanoyeght It's not simple permutation.''Ten heavenly stems" is "甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸" and "twelve earthly branches" is ''子丑寅卯辰巳午未申酉戌亥‘’. The order is as follows: "甲子","乙丑","丙寅" and so on. The answer is 60, the least common multiple of 10 and 12

yup, you're right
because sheep and goat are called Caprini(羊)and in the China there is no sheep at all. So you also use goat following us.
Chickie Hằng It doesn’t matter cuz the sheep and goat share the same Kanji

There's no cat in the original Chinese one... maybe that's the story for the Vietnamese?
I am from Taiwan, and we do include the cat part in our stories. And we said tiger came in third instead of first because it thinks it would definitely be first, but mouse and cow were more hard-working and woke up earlier than tiger
高梓根 Yeah I think we say that in Japan too

Brigham Snyder the night before the race, the cat and the mouse wanted to work together. In the morning of the race, the mouse went withour waking up the cat, and thats why the cat hated the mouse so much

It didn't stop there. It also deliberately cheated the cat out of the race by not waking it up on time, or outright push the cat into the water, where it nearly drowned, in the versions the cat did participate in the race.
Fruits basket taught me about the Chinese zodiac first ngl

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR FROM EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND!!!!!!!
Most Chinese people don't care about the 60-year cycle but only the 12-year cycle. Also, I've never heard of the inner animal, true animal or secret animal in my life...
+multiyoisi mok it doesnt matter what you think is cooler the way a culture works isnt based on the fact that your preferences
Bochao Wang 生辰八字啊哥
In the Chinese Fortune-Telling methodology, Bazi, there are four combinations of sexagenary cycles which correspond to four different representations of your birth time. Inner animal is the animal of your birth month, which determines your personality; while true animal is the birth animal of your birth day, which means your true self; while secret animal stands up for the timing where you were born, which entails the sub consciousness. It exists just in theory, but most of them aren't true. Only those who lack self-esteem seek the truth through this approach.
Bochao Wang, i heard of inner, true and secret animal.
My dear, you never heard, because you are young or don't have enough information, so sorry carry on... One day you'll reach it.

Isn't naga and dragon the same animal?
At least in my language, naga in english is dragon.
remilia scarlet Naga is a mythical creature from Hindu origin. In Southeast Asia its associated with a giant water dwelling snake/dragon thing
So it's basicaly a water dragon in the Western meaning, as asian dragons, unless the western ones, resemble snakes
Revanaught No, not really. Chinese dragons are associated with the forces of nature, water in particular, a lot. Stuff like typhoons, waterfalls, floods, and rain
Well, based on which language you ask. In Bahasa Melayu, naga when translated to English means dragon.

Acually, Naga also mean Dragon....
Syabila Azri It is also a Race in Warcraft that has the Same apperance and role.
maybe they show the power of the Naga
*actually
Yea... naga = dragon

Estie Kung same! Some people say I'm a golden fire pig, then I'm a golden pig, now a fire pig but now a pig?
It depends also in what month you were born, because the traditionnal Chinese new year's day is around the end of January and the beginning of February. So you may be born in 2007 but if you were on the beginning of the year, it might be a different sign than the rest of the year. Hope that makes sense ^^
And don't quote me on that I might completely wrong XD You should check out by yourself just to make sure
