Wow. What a sad story, but it's very beautiful though. I love the animation, music, and the narrator's voice. I love Chinese legends and history. I hope we see more of them. This story definitely hit me hard and made me cry.
Another romeo and julia story, never to be seen happen irl. But The quote is correct *"Love costa all we are and will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free".* Love is truth and truth sets us free. To bad most ppl are enemy to Love. And would rather be enslaved.
Oof, Tears. Maybe Im just weak but that ending messed me up. There’s something about how there’s no betrayal in this tale. There’s so many tales where a character is given a warning of some sort, but they’re too tempted to obey it, or forget to do the important thing and something horrible happens as a result. This is kinda the opposite, where she could have disobeyed, but instead she honored her promise to her parents, her parents honored their promise to that other family, and finally she remembered her promise to her friend as well. And as a result they both die in the end, but they’re finally free forever. There’s just something beautiful about that, I think, because it was her parents who agreed to let her go in the first place.
i watched the Chinese series about this legend when i was a kid , it’s a sad but beautiful love story, It somehow shows reality in Chinese feudal period when women weren’t treated equally, they weren’t allowed to attend schools, always were refered to be housekeepers. As children, everyone had to follow their parents orders with everything even their choice of love. Back to that time, there was a huge level separation between the rich and the poor, the noble people considered themselves as high ranking people and disrespected farmers and the poor even exploit them exhaustedly.
This sort of disparity and exploitation was the same everywhere back then... All the so called legends might just be a mixture of fantasy with what happened in reality
there's a movie based on this myth i used to love as a kid it's called "Ling et Tao" in french and i think "the butterfly lovers" in english, it's soo good
I'm glad that atleast her parents let her pursue what she wanted, even though they clearly stated that she had to return to the traditional path later on. 🍁
Everyone keeps calling Orpheus' story a tragedy; but consider that he ultimately reunited with Eurydice when he died, it's not really a tragedy at all. It was more of a tribulation; he had to endure a lot of sorrow, but he ultimately got a happy ending.
in the version i heard yingtai asked boshan to visit her at home, saying she had a sister that looked liked her that she wanted him to marry. and the rest of the conversation went something like: boshan: you have a sister that looks like you? yingtai: yes boshan: EXACTLY like you yingtai: and acts like me too boshan: YEAH ILL MARRY HER another detail is that on her way to her wedding with the ma family son, yingtai insisted that she wear white clothes instead of red, as white was a funeral color in china. ppl wear red to weddings bc that was a festive color, and wearing white to an even like that was considered bad luck and very rude. oh and there was a popular song a few decades ago about these two that i used to hear on the radio all the time as a kid

It's called Sampek Engtay in Hokkien.
I cannot believe teded hooked me up to the story in 5 mins and it took me a moment to come into the real world once again
when i think of this myth, i remember that one time when i was little and was at my grandparents’ house, and my granfather told my grandma to come to the garden; i heard him tell her that he saw two butterflies flying across the garden. it’s still such a cute moment to me.
That's so wheolsome and so pure. 🥺✋
What a beautiful ancient story about love to start anyone's day. #endlesslove #love #truelove
the art reminds me of the infamous Ghibli film 'the tale of princess kaguya'. Beautiful indeed.
In general, Chinese mythology addresses moral dilemmas and educates people about their culture and values. They display how people perceive the world and what various social groupings believe about it. They are also a way to change behavior as well as to transmit traditions and values.
Another amazing myth. My favorite Ted-Ed series for sure.
EVERY time I hear a TED jingle: my brain switches involuntarily yet sensibly from TH-cam couchy entertainment mode to sit-straight-memorise learning mode. Powerful Pavlovian effect on me, making me swallow a next breadcrumb of knowledge
I must say this seems to be a different version of the tale I am accustomed to! Beauty of folktales I guess!
A tragic yet beautiful tale of love. Somehow this reminded me of Omashu from ATLA
It used to be so popular in VietNam, I watched it with my grandmother when i was 5 years old. But now she isn’t alive and this video is suddenly suggested . And it makes me think about her
nice
this is a famous Chinese myth that my grandpa told me
thanks Ted ed for retelling the story :)
Yet it is only love which sets us free".*
Love is truth and truth sets us free. To bad most ppl are enemy to Love.
And would rather be enslaved.
“The young scholar he _always loved_ “ there’s no way this dude was straight
Love can manifest itself in many different ways
Too much heart strings pulled. Beautifully presented
More of this please! Beautiful art and music as beautiful as the love story♡
I got introduced to this story for the first time in Journey to the West (1996), where one of Zhu Bajie's past lives was Liang Shanbo.
When a Ted-Ed video starts with the title, "The Legend or The Myth" I instantly click to watch it.
There’s just something beautiful about that, I think, because it was her parents who agreed to let her go in the first place.
i grew up watching the chinese opera performance of this heartbreaking tale :")
i watched the Chinese series about this legend when i was a kid , it’s a sad but beautiful love story, It somehow shows reality in Chinese feudal period when women weren’t treated equally, they weren’t allowed to attend schools, always were refered to be housekeepers.
All the so called legends might just be a mixture of fantasy with what happened in reality
i just know that shanbo was a closeted bi
there's a movie based on this myth i used to love as a kid it's called "Ling et Tao" in french and i think "the butterfly lovers" in english, it's soo good
And Yingtai in the original version of story is from my hometown city. I have always loved this story.
I'm glad that atleast her parents let her pursue what she wanted, even though they clearly stated that she had to return to the traditional path later on.

Everyone keeps calling Orpheus' story a tragedy; but consider that he ultimately reunited with Eurydice when he died, it's not really a tragedy at all. It was more of a tribulation; he had to endure a lot of sorrow, but he ultimately got a happy ending.
in the version i heard yingtai asked boshan to visit her at home, saying she had a sister that looked liked her that she wanted him to marry. and the rest of the conversation went something like:
boshan: you have a sister that looks like you?
yingtai: yes
boshan: EXACTLY like you
yingtai: and acts like me too
boshan: YEAH ILL MARRY HER
another detail is that on her way to her wedding with the ma family son, yingtai insisted that she wear white clothes instead of red, as white was a funeral color in china. ppl wear red to weddings bc that was a festive color, and wearing white to an even like that was considered bad luck and very rude.
oh and there was a popular song a few decades ago about these two that i used to hear on the radio all the time as a kid
I’m very happy and moved by this rendition of this famous legend.
