    Thank you for showing how the carbide inserts/cutters actually work, unlike many presenters who state the carbide only scrape and tear the wood fibres and leave a poor finish. I made a twig pot yesterday from hard wood and I did not need to sand before applying a finishing wax. Many folks think the fine pointed tool/insert/cutter, is only for fine lines and detail work. The demonstration show here shows how versatile the cutters are. Keep an open mind and watch a few other presentations before coming to a conclusion. Ex Leeds living down under in paradise-Tasmania with more hardwoods growing and dying on our 5-acres than I will ever have time to put a tool to. Stay safe and happy turning.

    Thank you so much! I have learned more about using carbide tools in the last 21 minutes and 12 seconds, then I have in the last 6 months of searching. Well done, Thanks again!

    Hey Mike.....awesome review!
    I went into a local wood working store today to look at getting my first set of tools. I was talking with one of the workers there, and when I mentioned my concern with buying the stuff for sharpening regular tools and learning how to sharpen. He then showed me some carbide tools from Easy Wood Tools. He showed me how to use them, and said that he really loves suggesting them to new turners, so they can at least get started in woodturning (which is what I am doing). I ended up walking out with 2...the round and square tools, and replacements. Yes, I do want normal tools......but when I have a little more money to get the wheel, tool rest, etc for sharpening.
    Really nice price on those tools you have, and the look good! I will look up his website to see about US shipping and then your video on using a diamond hone to get the edge back on the tip. Thank you so much for posting your videos. I am getting some good tips, and learning a lot!

      Take care, and keep me updated with your progress.

      Mike Waldt I regret not starting years ago as well! So I finally got my lathe together...thanks to wife, sister in law, and son in helping get it out of the box...it was a beast! Anyway.....I have a small bowl on the lathe now. I had an issue with my screw chuck hole not being big enough (didn't have a drill bit large enough), so I attached my face plate. When I was removing the face plate after turning the bottom, three of the screws broke off....lol. I now have them out, the bowl back on the lathe, and my first bowl is about half done.
      I do want to thank you for your response. Getting encouragement and advice from turners like you and Martin Saban-Smith is so helpful and means alot. Thank you so much!

    Mike, watched your video a number of times and contacted Glen back in July,. Unfortunately with the current situation Glen was struggling with getting materials. However, I will be taking delivery of three tools next week, so really looking forward to using them as they represent great value, and, as a newbie to turning, I’m sure they will help me get to grips with my projects whilst continuing to go through the learning curve with my traditional tools. Love the channel, stay safe.

    Another great video Mike. I'm a GnuBee turner who purchased a Delta Midi, and a medium-quality set of tools a while back. I then found out about carbides and bought a set of Cap'n Eddie Castelin's carbides as well. But it wasn't until yesterday that I actually turned my first piece, a round in preparation for a goblet.
    Since the found wood I used was quite irregular I used the roughing gouge from my first set for initial shaping and then the carbides to finish the job. I really enjoyed the ease with which I could peel away the wood in very fine strips using the carbide tools.
    I hope to become proficient with both sets but I feel that carbides will be my go-to chisels.

    I used carbide for the first time yesterday on a Black Walnut project. Right away I was getting long ribbons of wood coming off of the round cutter which I wasn't expecting. I will use them some more but so far I am pleasantly surprised. So far the statement that carbide cutters only scrape the wood to be simply not true. I might look into the hunter Osprey tools. I know this is an old video but thanks!

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you found it useful David. If the cutter is dished, you will produce shavings as you are slicing the wood. Non dished cutters will essentially scrape, unless presented to the wood at 45°. Thanks for watching.

    Hello Mike,
    Excellent review so many thanks.
    I have been using the square and round carbide tips for about the last 6 months and they are a joy to work with.
    I get the most fun when hollowing out a bowl using the square tip. I go in at an angle of 45 degrees and about an inch from the centre. I only go as deep as half the depth of the tip and the shavings just fly out. I then move back another inch and so on until most of the waste is removed.
    They can also be used for fine work such as straightening the side walls of boxes.
    If I want to curve the bottom of a box I use the round tip with a feather light touch.
    The tools you displayed are an excellent price as I paid a lot more for mine.
    Best wishes,
    Alan.

    Hi Mike. I know this vid is a few years old, but I have just bought a set of three carbides from Glenn Teagle, after being recommended by Stephen Gibson. They are fantastic value for the money. I have only tried them for a little while 1/2 hour actually. That was ten minutes after they arrived. Fantastic quality, and from the little that I have turned, I am going to use them a whole lot more. They will not replace my normal chisels, but are a welcome addition. Cheers mate, and keep the vids coming.

    Loved your review Mike, you are always fair minded and diplomatic. I have been hollowing Chilean Pine, for the finishing cuts I used a carbide negative rake cutter. The cutter cost £22.00 from Yandles. Mounted on 16mm round bar it is now my go to NRS- like yourself I have ground and tried many, including Rollie Munro’s.

    Great video. I have a carbide cutter bar and different cutters from Capt. Eddie. His cutters are flat across the top. I have not had any problems using them and get a real smooth finish from them. Yes they will hog out the wood fast. I know I like mine.
    Reading about carbide cutters I have found that with my flat cutters it is best to keep the tool level with the floor and cut on center. The books say with cupped tops the bar should slant down across the rest to cut on center.

    So easy to sharpen too. Buy a very fine diamond lap plate, low cost imports work fine. I have a dual rectangular plate with two grades of diamond. Place the cutter face down on the plate lubricated with a squirt of WD 40, use the finger tip pad to apply light pressure on the cutter. Move the cutter on the plate/flat hone, in a figure eight motion until the WD 40 turns black with the fine amount of carbide removed. Remove the cutter from the holder to sharpen them. This sharpening can be done many times due to the design of the cutters, very little carbide needs to be be removed to get a razor sharp edge back. I use carbide on my metal turning lathes too and often resharpen when turning plastics and aluminium to maintain a super fine finish.

    I note you are using the ‘dished’ cutters which are much more aggressive than the flat topped cutters which are more common and perhaps more user friendly for newcomers. I have used both types and found the standard flat topped cutters a better starter option. They are also all easy to touch up on a very fine low cost diamond hone-I use imports from China and very affordable. I am an extensive metal lathe carbide insert user of many types, I am only new to turning wood with carbide. Many thanks for sharing your experience with the dished cutters.

    Hi Mike, another good video, I also am new to using carbide tools I got some from Capt. Eddie. and in the middle of the learning curve with these tools. I think they are a great addition to our turning arsenal. I am glad that you made the point of having to learn to use them. you cant just pick them up, toss them at the lathe and wham, you get a David Ellsworth hollow form. I thought from all the u-tube and carbide adds that they were kind of a fix all. but I found out real fast they are not, that you actually have to learn to use them. but I do enjoy them, they do a lot of things very well and easy and also a lot of things that they wont do and have to use the conventional lathe tools to get the desired results. I found out that they are very fun to use and fun to learn about. and that's the most important thing other than safety, is have fun and enjoy our hobby. Thanks again Mike

      Mike Waldt Hi Mike just tried out the large square carbide chisel and you are dead right, it is a joy to use. Replacement square cutters are just £3 so they are really great value. I was also able to hollow out the inside of a little box making the inner side walls and the bottom with a nice 90 degree angle for the first time.
      Thanks again for this review.
      All the best

    Nice work as usual Mike.
    I recently bought a Robert Sorby Turnmaster set but am not too happy about the amount of tool overhang over the toolrest, about 2" minimum. On my 10"/18" mini-lathe, I need to turn the toolrest backwards for more clearance. Was considering buying a set of 'Easy' carbide tools next, but these look even better. Prices are the lowest I've seen, too.
    I especially like their 'Multi-Chisel'. It can even take 1/4" shank router bits as cutters.
    Thanks very much for the heads-up.
    ... Steve
    Edit: Just realised you'd already mentioned the 'Multi-Chisel'. Missed that on my first viewing somehow.

    Hi Mike, I finally got around to using one of the carbide cutting tools I got from the same source. It had a diamond shape with curves at either end to give you two cutting edges.
    I was getting along reasonably well when I got a catch of some form and the shaft of the tool jumped from the rest and back down and I can only presume that the square although not sharp edges battered back down onto my left hand pinky pad and caused a rather nasty cut.
    I hope all is going well workwise and healthwise for you!
    Take care! ( words that I need to bear in mind when using my lathe!)

    Mike, I wonder if I'm the only one that has learned one point the hard way. I have a habit, using traditional tools, after a cut, I run my thumb up and over the cutting edge to push away build up.
    I have found, on these new tools, this is quite a mistake. I've kept a box of bandages handy as these carbide cutters are very sharp. Just thought I'd throw that out. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

    Hi Mike,
    Truly enjoy all your videos.
    I started woodturning 6 month ago and you have been the primary source for my "education".
    Thanks for that.
    Question:
    When it comes to using carbide for hollowing, would you then recommed the "scraping" cutters or "cutting" cutters (that you show in this video).

    Lars, Denmark

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi lars and thank you for your kind words.
      My preference is the type of cutters I use here, I like to "cut" for hollowing as it leaves a better surface, and is more efficient. This is my personal opinion though, and not everyone will agree :)

    Mike, nice tool review. I am curious as to the tool you were using as the hollowing tool - I have around, square and detail carbine tools, made by a company here in the US. My curiosity is my 'detail' and your 'hollowing' tool look the same. I have never tried hollowing with it, now I must try it. The detail tool, I use for beads and to help start the rings, you taught me to make. Anyway, great review...

    Mike, I actually just ordered the hollowing tool to use on my carbide tools videos. It should arrive here in the USA next week. Glenn is sending it unhandled, at a bit of a discount, to save on shipping costs overseas.
    Anyway, I know how to sharpen/hone the flat top cutters, but I've been looking for your video on honing these cupped bits, where I need to sharpen around the bevel, etc. are you still planning to do that video, even just a short one? I'd love some help with technique!

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Steve, you'll be pleased with Glenn's tools, I assure you. I haven't done a video specifically on honing the carbide bits, as time has been my enemy lately. Glenn told me he uses a wooden dowel and screws the round beveled cutters in to it, grips the dowel on the lathe, and hones with a diamond card/file with the lathe turning slowly and the the file on the bevel. I haven't tried it yet, as my tools are still sharp, as I haven't had the time to use them, and get used to them.
      Hope this helps a bit. You've got the makings of a great channel my friend.

    A very enthusiastic Mike review, obviously genuine and straightforward as usual. As I said before, Mike I am new to this fantastic discipline and am still trying anything and everything with the traditional tools I have to see the results. I note that you say that even you with your experience need to learn how to use the carbide cutters, do you think that it's worth me investing in these and learn their uses alongside my traditional tools or should I master the old skills first? Regards, Chris

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's difficult to say Chris. I think to be comfortable with traditional tools, and understand how they work first, is the way to go, in my opinion. Then you can call on your knowledge to better understand how these carbide tools work.
      After all, they don't "replace" traditional tools, they "compliment" them, again this in only my personal opinion. Hope this helps.

    Hi Mike, been a subscriber for some time, new keen enthusiastic turner, on the strength of this I have ordered the round cutter from Glen, he tells me it was posted today so looking forward to having a play! Quick question, are you planning a video on lathe maintenance, and what do you use to lubricate your lathe bed? Regards Graham

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Graham, firstly thanks for your continuing support, it's much appreciated. i am sure you will be well pleased with your purchase from Glenn as well. I wasn't planning on a lathe maintenance video, as all I do is clean it down after each session, and spray dry lubricant on the bed ways, to prevent rusting, and cover them when applying any liquid to a piece, like sanding sealer. Every couple of months check the pully belt for any wear, and check all grub screws etc. for tightness, and that is about all. Hope this helps.

    Do you still use these Mike. I just picked up a set of five on FB Marketplace and was looking for some advice on using them and 2nd video I watched was yours! Feels weird using them compared to traditional tools, particularly as I was presenting them square on and found them very aggressive. Will have tp practice a bit following your technique.

      Hi Bill, I don't use them now, but when I did they were very effective with practice. Thanks for watching. Cheers. Mike

    Is this Tool Review Week or something? You and Carl both doing tool reviews lately haha. I wasn't crazy about the handles on Carl's review. These however, are very nice. Great review, Mike.

    Mike ... Thoughtful review. I'm in the US, so I won't be purchasing these tools, but I appreciate your review nonetheless.
    I notice that you most often were running the tool at an angle on the tool rest as opposed to laying the bar flat. I do the same thing with mine, which leads me to wonder why the manufacturers don't offer a round bar instead of a square bar.

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gerald, I'll pass your comment onto Glenn. I have seen round bars used on these, can't think where though. Also some manufactures offer the head at various angles too, but they are at a premium price point.
      Thanks for the comments

      I agree, square bar for square insert and round bar for round and hollow inserts. IMHO more softer on tool rest. After seeing Miguel Sanchez #29 video I am tempted to do it myself.

      Gerald you might take a look at Capt Eddie Castline Big Guy Production he offers a 3/8 round cutter on a 3/8 round bar that I really like a lot his prices on cutters is the best you will find on the web, cutters to fit many manufactures tools at like 1/3 the price of others, and he will stand up for what he sells

      Actually, I made all but one of my own bars ... the one I purchased came from Cap'n Eddie Castelin!

    Glenn - if you manage to read this, you need to do some work on your website bud! Some descriptions on the tools and how to order would be great. Even a link to your eBay shop would be good. :)

    Mike, thanks for the video. One question - could you use the square carbide cutter as a roughing spindle gouge ? Or is there a carbide tool that can take the place of the standard roughing gouge ? Sorry if this appears to be a stupid question but I am a complete newbie at woodturning !

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, and thanks for watching. You can rough down a spindle with the square Carbide cutter, if you go to SJ Woodworks channel, he does all his videos using carbide cutters, and is very proficient in using them for all types of turning, here is the link to Steve's channel:
      Part 1 of 3 - Woodturning: Can I do it with carbide
      Hope this helps

    Hey Mike nice vid. My question is how versitile are they? I'm running red oak logs and I'm looking at running the outside first, get my shape cut a tenon flip it around and hollow it out. So will the round one ruff cut and finish or would the square one be better for outside and inside?

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually only now use traditional tools, except when hollowing. These tools are very versatile however, and a search on TH-cam, will come up with more content on them than I can provide.
      Sorry I can't be of more help.
