    From your excellent images, it is clear to see how the watch is wound and operates. But how is it set? Is there a mechanism that disengages the ratchet and engages the train when you pull the "crown" out on the bottom of the movement? This would require a 90 degree pivot from the plane of the movement.

    Fascinating! How anyone can manufacture such minute pieces is mind boggling! You ask at the end of your videos if there are any watches we may have an interest. I can't help but think of my very first wristwatch my father gave me when I was 5 years old. It was his for many years and when he bought himself a new Bulova, he gave me his old Westbury. This was the beginning of my timepiece fascination which continues to this day. I am now 66 years old and still stare at timepieces for hours on end and revel in there magical precision. Anyway, I digress. Back to my question. Do you have any information on the Westbury? Anything at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    What you said at 4:55 it isn’t actually right the mainspring doesn’t stores the power it’s the spring barrel that stores the power the mainspring regulates the power and the escapement distribute the power from the gears to the mainspring.

    • @bcepni00
      @bcepni00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What he said was right. The Mainspring and “Spring barrel” are the same thing. But I got thrown off too when he showed the BALANCE spring while saying Mainspring.

    • @DAKOTA56777
      @DAKOTA56777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, what he said was right, what you said was wrong. The barrel, well it depends if you mean the entire barrel assembly or just the barrel itself, the barrel itself is the outer part that drives the gears, yes, but what gives the barrel that rotational energy? The mainspring, which is inside it. The mainspring doesn't regulate diddly, it's constantly pushing with all its force to rotate the gear train as fast as it can, regulation comes from the escapement.
      Specifically the pallet jams one of its arms into a notch on the escape wheel, which locks up the entire mechanism, until the balance comes around with a paddle and slaps the pallet's fine ass, the pallet then, in shock of such an act of lewdness, proceeds to let go of the gear before quickly regaining its composure and grabbing onto the next wheel notch with its other arm. In retaliation the pallet kicks the balance, but this only serves to encourage the balance, which then proceeds to continue clapping those lovely pallet cheeks multiple times a second.
      Depending on the enthusiasm of the young balance, this process may occur at a modest 5 times per second, to a more enthusiastic 10 times per second, perhaps even more for the particularly energetic and eager balances out there.
      Now granted, the _video_ part is wrong at that time stamp, as the video is showing the _hairspring_ that drives the balance, but what the narrator is actually _saying_ is quite correct.
