Ok fine here's my spotify playlist: open.spotify.com/playlist/7mt... (sort from newest to oldest tho, I only have one playlist.... from the last five years.... pls don't judge me too hard).
I'm Mariah Alice, and I live the "solo female van life" with my dog, Finn. We've been on the road full time since June of 2020, and although our road has been met with what feels like a zillion ups and downs, we've finally gotten to the point where living in a van feels like home. Sometimes we're alone in the woods, sometimes we're alone in a desert, sometimes we're chasing snow or thunderstorms, sometimes we're trying to see all 50 states, and sometimes we're making weekly videos here on TH-cam talking about our feelings, anxiety, loneliness, seasonal extreme sadness..... yeah. I don't know what I'm doing with my life. And that's okay. I think :)

😬) and throw myself into the deep end with this next chapter -- but, I can't wait to share this next journey. It's gonna be a wild next few months I think lol... okay see you guys at some point next week (probably) 💕

Before I bought my Transit 250, I had rented a Uhaul van to move out of my apartment...with TWO KITTIES! I had it for several weeks and we "lived" out of the low roof moving van long enough to decide that a "standable" high roof would suit us perfectly! Fast forward to 2022 and my 4th Vanlife anniversary 🤗

You can use a ratchet rope and hook it to the top roller when the door is down than loop it around the furniture rail on the side and snug it down so the door can't be opened from the outside. I have been doing that for 5 years in my 10-foot Retired U-Haul. I also made a plate that covers the slot in the floor where the outside latch goes so no one can lock me in when I am in the back.

It’s been fun watching your journey the past year, both geographically and personally. You’ve grown so much and have such skill and confidence now that once you have a 4x4 you’ll probably take it on some sketchy roads … you know you will. A winch and other recovery gear would be good to have. It saved Foresty Forest at least once, although he spends a lot of time in winter conditions. It may not help as much in Death Valley …

@@clintonflynn815 If she sells her van I am sure I couldn't afford it, because the youtube van life boom has made any truck, van, and anything you can sleep in make people charge a hundred thousand dollars, or more. I still want a high roof van, but have considered a box van with a door opening leading to the back. Now that I have said that every van lifer ever created will sell their vans for uhaul's, and box trucks so a 1978 rusty full of holes box truck with 700k miles is worth 30 thousand dollars. I can dream that one is affordable soon so I can do the same things that are on videos like this. Until then, and after I will watch videos of van, truck, camper life. I really do just love it, and want to get involved.

Another option you may want to think of is an Ex-Ambulance. They are basically smaller box trucks. And there so much customization you can do with the inside. I have had mine for a few years now and love it. Gutted the entire inside and built it the way I want it. Wood stove, sink, fold down bed/couch etc. They also have a ton of storage on the outside with many compartments. Being fairly smaller then a box truck you can still get up those tight logging roads too. I'm hoping to start a channel myself here pretty soon and give the full time van life a try, been doing it on and off but am ready to do it full time. Just miss being out in the forest away from the concrete jungle (City Blah) and feeling myself. Good luck on your next purchase and new chapter in your adventure.
    Cheers, Danny.

I think the only thing that would bother me and I'm sure I could do something about it is sleeping in the back , someone could latch the back door shut on you locking you inside if you don't prevent the latch from functioning like sticking a block in the hole where the latch fits or something . As for locking the door shut from the inside all you need is about a 3 inch C clamp to put on the track the door rolls on at the top of the door , that will stop it from opening and it's controlled from the inside .

Hi Mariah I love your video... I'm an older lady and I love watching your challenges and adventures... I think one thing I've taken away from van life, because I watch many different versions of people who've built out vans or built out school buses... For me I would probably just buy a class C... That already has everything in it I'm just not up to figuring all that out right now... The class C is similar to that U-Haul you have... I know a lot of people buy used vehicles and can build them out themselves but I'm not that handy and would have to get something already done... Either way it would be an adventure... Thanks for sharing!

Glad you're discovering a larger rig - been on a journey myself around trying to find the right set up. I want you to know what an inspiration you have been… im a single female on the road with my dog Shorty.. my friend found you, told me about your channel, And have been following you for more than a year now.. seen you go through many changes as I have. I’m still trying to figure this out alone, tackling one major thing at a time.. For instance, right now I have no idea why my water is not coming out of my faucets… I sure would like to take a shower… Or rinse a dish! It is also text me eyeball deep clean TH-cam videos trying to figure it all out… Then waiting for funds to come in to be able to fix.. anyway.. I feel like we’re friends and I wanted to reach out and let you know I’m cheering you on the whole way! Awesome I love where you are camping and the mountains and wherever you are going recently is beautiful! Do you camp at dispersed camping site where you’re not paying anything? I cannot do this with the cost of stays.. I am in Tennessee right now… Started in Rockford Illinois… Bought my truck in Utah then the camper from a cool couple in Wyoming drove it down to Salt Lake then to San Diego then up to San Francisco then all the way back to Rockford last year. I know I’ll end up on the West Coast somewhere but I wanna venture out and hit my way all down the East Coast… Since that is not where I’m from or ever been and wanted to see it for myself… but anyway… just wanna say hi and I’d love to meet somewhere on the road!!

@@MariahAlice there has been shortage of U-Haul trailers this year and when I picked one up a couple weeks ago the guy said they were hard to get because so many people are living out of them. The small trailers are more popular because they can be towed with a car and don't have a mileage limit.
When you start adding mileage exploring that $19.99 disappears in the rear view mirror quickly.

Mariah sweetie, being born and raised in the North Alabama hills I can totally understand your bathtub/French door dreams. And as for upgrading to a larger space, ABSOLUTELY! I am all for minimalistic living, but a van is a little too small. You definitely deserve something larger and preferably 4x4. Although nobody knows where you will be when you pick up your new rig. If you need or want any help with the buildout, I build tiny homes, so I have all the tools you'll need, and I'd be more than happy to help get you back on your adventures. As always, BIG HUGS from Tennessee!😁👍

I'm surprised that you are worried or stressed about changing vans! You, the young woman that travels alone (with Finn) around the country! You are brave and daring to do what you do! I'm a 59 year old father of two grown sons that would freak thinking of them renting a U-Haul and sleeping out somewhere alone! Not to mention a daughter! You have more confidence than you give yourself credit for IMO! I think you WILL do anything you set your mind to! Just go for it!
Question..Do you really shoot film in the Canon AE-1? I use to have an AE-1 Program when I was your age. Now I'm in the process of scanning my old film using a Sony digital camera! Fun stuff! Best wishes for your next van adventures!

I like a slightly bigger rig than a van. I had a van I used it for several years but I didn’t really camp in it. it was pretty much a weekend trips. I had two or three of seven or eight day trips in the van it was a real nice Pleasure Way and the quality was excellent. but I found that I could not move around as much as I need to and it was difficult with my little dog so again the storage was decent and since I was not moving into it it it was Ok. When I purchased again I went with a 25 foot class B+ by forest river it’s called a Sunseeker I paid under 100,000 for it and it’s not made near to the quality of the Pleasure Way. So that’s first thing you Gotta know. However the benefit I have a larger refrigerator because I’m in this now six months at a time. So now they call me a Snowbird I get out of the extreme heat in the summer and cold 🥶 in winter. The bathrooms better, I can get a real shower the bed is made constantly it is between a regular size bed and a queen. It’s very comfortable because I have added memory foam and latex foam and it just works beautifully. I always get a good sleep I always can get a shower I always have enough food to make breakfast the counter is small but it’s bigger than it was in the van. My seating is limited but it’s softer and more comfortable than it was in the van. So the Larger one is clearly very easy to drive I’m completely happy with it except I have to repair the cabinets in the finish comes off the cabinets because it’s like a contact paper so I’m kind of sanding when it peels up because you can’t glue it back down it’s stiff and hard so I just sand it off and because it has kind of a varied coloration doesn’t look that much different from what’s underneath the paper. The bathroom door is the worst so I’ll probably just order a new bathroom door from Forest River and when I get it I’ll probably get some matte finish clear coat to protect it. Hopefully it can’t come apart as much that way. I don’t know why it’s coming apart the inside which you would think would be the worst because of showers it’s perfectly fine it’s the outside in the hallway where it’s come loose at the four corners and both long sides so I don’t know what’s going on but I think replacing it’s the best idea. The Slightly larger rig is just right and can’t or hope I don’t have to go back in a van. I do get 14.5 mpg in my 25 foot Forest River Sunseeker. 😊❤️👏

Hey Mariah, I offer a security tip for roll-up doors on a cube-van. Get a pair of vise-grip pliers. While you are inside, lock the vise-grip pliers in the roll-up door channel, behind the last wheel. This will prevent anyone from opening the door from the outside. A cheap and effective hack for security and you might need the vise-grips for other jobs! Stay safe! Big John...😎😁

I have a converted ambulance that my girlfriend and I have lived in, mainly in the winter, I really like it, there are quirks but also really good parts. Like the whole back box area is built extremely strong, and also totally aluminum, so there is no rust drama which is super nice. Also straight walls and flat ceiling are cool

Also it’s a dually which is why I commented, we’ve taken it places and in conditions a rwd has no business but have always been really happy with its performance. Also mine came with a limited slip differential that can help a lot with traction without it being 4wd

I think it was very creative to rent/test out a box truck using a Uhaul. Curious what you learned from your Uhaul experience? Since you are listing you van, I'm guess you learned it's ok start with an empty vechicle and rebuild? How much did the experiment cost? I'd guess the 0.19mile was a big cost. Goals for next vehicle? 4x4? box dually? something else?

I think my first goal would probably be to get access between cabin and rear.
Then you can get in/out through the cabin doors, don't need to leave the rear lifting door unlocked, and possibly to be locked by someone on the outside.
Probably get a rear side door at some point too, and steps, for easy access, once the layout plans are done.

I've been leaning more and more towards a uhaul build. It's large and rectangular. Something is appealing about it. If it's something you want to do you could get a hold of some folks who already have a uhaul build. Check it out. But go with your gut. Personally I'd rather regret trying something new than regret staying safe.

My rig is 25’ and I had never really camped or anything before I purchased it. It’s been a learning curve this past year. The past week I’ve been considering trading it for a van but I just can’t do it just yet. I know I’m missing out on the ability to go down certain roads and be more stealth in other areas but the comfort outweighs those drawbacks…..at least for now. You did give me an idea though. I will rent a van for a week or two and give it a test run before deciding.
