If anyone has recommendations for what we could add to that wall, let us know. PS: I will not allow myself to post another video until we figure out how to install a heater, and I have no idea how long that's going to take. So, we'll se you when we see you. Until then I hope you're staying warmer than us. lol.
i just got a camplux portable propane shower for camping. ive also got a shop in southern california if you need a place with power, welder, table saw and stuff for bigger projects in the future. chasing the dream isnt easy i know, im a self-owned and operated business owner.
I'm building out a box truck myself. I plan on using the space behind the passenger seat as a small storage shelf. A good place for the heater is under the sink or next to where you will keep your fresh water supply, I think putting it behind the forward seats would work but be wary of damaging the ventilation hose to the box.
Pro tip: put a security camera on the top of that roll up door. Just to be sure there's no one on the other side when you open it up. Can't be too careful!
@@markmanning5683 you didn't just say clothing options, did you? Are you inferring that a woman's clothes make men rape them? Please tell me no! Men make men rape women! It's a sick mind of the man who rapes and in no way due to a woman's clothing!
Insulation, insulate every inch of the cabin, and the floor. The roll-up back door leaks cold air into the cabin even when closed. So you will need to design how you want the rear opening. A roof vent is a great addition after deciding how you would like to lay down your solar panels. A wood stove fireplace would be great for heat and ambiance in addition to a diesel heater. Installing a diesel heater at the mid-section of the cabin will allow the heat to warm up the cabin faster and more evenly. I'm looking forward to see you live happily in your new home!

Fixing up and painting the cab is actually a very good idea. It's a limited space so can be finished relatively quickly, and the sense of accomplishment it gives you a bit of a boost in confidence when it comes to the larger tasks. Anyone starting something big should do that.

Hi Mariah The first thing you need is insulation. For me, that is at least on a par with a heater for necessity. Particularly this time of year. Insulation to floor, walls and roof ASAP as, even with a heater - heat will just disappear into the wilderness, without anything to keep it in. Nate Murphy is a great source of information and help. Hope this is a repeat of others comments- it should be. Wishing you well and congratulations on all you’re achieving 😊
I was going to suggest insolation but figured someone in the comments would have already suggested it. The only issue is, how does she go about it. i mean, yeah you could have 4 - 6 inches of insulation on every surface but then that would eat away at her living space. I think 1 - 1.5" insulation foam panels would probably work, as that would only eat up 2-3" total side to side, top to bottom, also has the added benefit of being fairly easy to install in a box truck.
Suggestion, a small shelf above the seats and door frame to house small viney plants or herbs that will dangle eventually towards the sunlight. of course place something along the shelf lege to prevent plants from falling during travel. But omg, that's an incredibly cute saw, My mind formulated a million craft possibilities in an instant lol, So excited for you and this build its looking incredible!
I am in the process of converting an ambulance into an RV. I am a bit jealous (in a positive way) that you are able to make this journey at your age. Box trucks are rad for conversions. I went down the rabbit hole and made mine. A HUGE bonus is they're square so making walls/etc is pretty easy even for a rookie like me.
Just as a heads up, paint and spray adhesive tend to outgass CO2 and other fumes as they dry. If you overdo it in an enclosed space and then sleep in it, you can poison yourself. Have a max that you feel safe doing each day and maybe get an 02 monitor off amazon. Osha requires it in a lot of paint shops that have autoclaves.
you‘re so inspiring. you got no idea what you‘re doing, but you‘re doing it anyways. figuring it out as you go. most people don‘t dare to do that. they have a dream and hesitate to do the first step. thank you for sharing all this with us, the ups and the downs. cheers 🎉
I was wondering how you were going to make the jaggered door frame look decent. And those wooden frames just made it sooooo much better. Little victories!! So cool to see this build Mariah. I really love your videos, and the current mountain place you're in. Don't take it for granted, you've got a really cool life. Enjoy your time there in the mountains! Much love from South Africa 🇿🇦
When I was your age in the 90s, the big thing on the west coast was hosteling. It was a way to travel cheap if you had a car...or some traveled by bike. So, I drove my small car up and down the pacific coast hwy, staying in various hostels while meeting other young travelers and exploring beautiful country. Although it was more restrictive compared to your way of road life, I recall the feeling of great freedom and a sense of adventure during that time. If I could go back, I think I would have tried it the way you are now and made it more of a full-time way of life. I really enjoy watching how the physical transformation of your vehicles and the experiences of your travels seems to impact the transformation of you as a person, which is what it's all about! It also seems that you have mastered the ability to stay very present and accept "what is" which creates such peace and joy....and things seem to fall magically into place...usually! Thank you for sharing:)
Not only are you inspiring people, me, but those dry flowers add such a warm touch to your truck! I'm so excited to see the work you're doing. I wasn't feeling great this morning, but your video perked me up! Thank you 😊
"Anyway, I'm going to give it a try", begins all journeys. I'd still be looking for the perfect truck! Love your thoughts & ideas and especially your narrative.
Really watch your truck's weight. Just to keep it legal and not to wear out your breaks so soon. The heavier your truck the harder your breaks will have to work. I love your videos. Please stay safe and keep pumping out content.
New subscriber. I have extreme jealousy to anyone who travels the U.S. and converts a van or "box truck" to living quarters. Look forward to following your builds and your amazing journey ahead.
I have built storage for multiple vehicles for my electrical business and I have always ended up posted at my local Home Depot and built them there. I also have spent a lot of time wandering the aisles looking at the materials there and brainstorming ideas for builds. I'm doing a basic conversion to an old shuttle bus. My goal is to build simply to make it easy to move to another shuttle bus if need be. The box truck is a great platform because it is so easy to move to another box truck if something major happens to yours. Lastly a security tip for you, if there is a hole in the track of the roll up door somewhere, putting a metal stick or something strong will help prevent the door from rolling up. Hopefully that helps! Stay warm!
You could paint a little mural. You could put a small piece of tapestry up there, or a small quilted piece of artwork. When I first saw you bought this truck, I saw you building a staircase going up to your bed area. Under the stairs were drawers for your clothing and things - or it could be your kitchen area, with kitchen drawers and kitchen shelving. Or, your video creating area. I like the paint color you chose to paint the cab, and I like the color of the carpet, looks very attractive.
Your creative mind and style is intriguing. It interesting how little things can effect people. I would never have thought of pulling up the carpet, painting the back header or hanging strands of wheat next to the pass-through like you did. I remember how my now deceased wife would love to not only fix a meal, but present it with ringed cloth napkins, placemats and served in matching china bowls and plates. Makes me realize even more, how much I need a woman’s touch to decorate my less than awe-inspiring van.
USMC VETERAN TRUCKER AND FRIEND,,I'M SO PROUD OF YOU! FOLLOWING FOR YEARS, I LOVE GOT COURAGE, PERSONALITY N TIE VOICE, KEEP LIVING LIFE THE WAY! THANK YOU!
You got this. One step at a time. Great idea of doing the cab...for it is a space that you really want to be comfortable in. It looks great, too. Marie loved the touch of the dried flowers. We all have to start from a place of ignorance, but putting the time to learn new skills is done by trial and error. Every mistake made, is a progression forward. In the end, this BUILD will be yours. You will KNOW everything about this rig...and it will be filled with memories. You are writing your own adventure story in each new finished project. Thank you for taking us on this adventure with you. BTW, the scenery has been fantastic. Thank you, again.
i swear this comment section is just wonderful, you guy are not only helping Mariah but also the viewers who plan on building their own van/truck into home. :D
At those moments when things get hard don't focus on the entire forest only the tree you are chopping at the moment. Celebrate when you complete each phase and milestone as a completed project. This helps me when I do big projects.
I have that exact same saucepan. It's probably 40 years old, but a steel wool pad, some dish soap and a little elbow grease will make it shine like new. ☀
You're doing great. Feels good figuring out and learning new things. Watching professionals build things is great, but watching someone figure it out as they go and taking chances makes it much more relatable and entertaining to watch. Looking forward to the next one.
I have a van that I started last year. Had to stow it during last winter but I haven't worked on it since and I am now sure it's mostly been a really bad case of analysis paralysis. I have the tools, garage, and experience to build (not as much time since I have a FT job), but for some reason I have been DREADING beginning the work again. This video has been inspiring and relatable in many ways. Seeing you make such wonderful progress even though you don't always know what you're doing has been eye-opening. And let's be real here - you may not always know something, but your determination seems to always win. You figure it out and continuously add new skills to your tool belt. I'm not sure what changed when and why uncertainty is scary to me all of the sudden. I'm going to restart building this week. Thank you for your videos, you're awesome! You're making a literal difference, metaphorically. 😉
I love how you're doing this project. I feel like every van built etc I've seen they just have the van sitting in a driveway and they're building like mad on a time crunch waiting for the adventure to begin. You're living the adventure while doing the built. And while you're at it proving it doesn't really take anything fancy to live out of a vehicle. A place to sleep, a cooler, some power and a cooktop. That's how I've been doing little roadtrips in my minivan, of course that's different to fully living in a vehicle, but it works while you're getting to the good stuff.
Just adding new paint and carpet the cab of the truck looks brand new, not a bad place to fit heater behind the seat. You can easily make a round hole to put pipe through into living area 🙂
I think the important thing when starting this build is to accept that you are going to do a lot of mistakes and just enjoy the process. You might end up redoing a lot of stuff but with each one you will learn something and if you're not bothered about doing it wrong I am sure you're going to enjoy it. A lot of "why is this so beautiful" moments ahead. Can't wait to see them!
Crafty!!! Another masterpiece solo film making adventure journey in the chapters of this novel and lovely progress on "Steve." I was totally thinking of your ventilation when you were painting or stripping old floor boards, and that adhesive. N-95 masks and open ventilation please! You always get great nature shots and sometimes I can't tell who is enjoying it more, you or Finn and vicariously us.
We love it. Don't even think about time. You've done it before so you know what needs to be done. I've learned from you and I will be on the road soon. When you build by yourself, everything takes tons of time.
This is such a mindful build..I love the small chapters of it all. Nothing is rushed but you definitely are deep soul searching through it all. I hope this makes sense to you. As for the cab, AMAZING improvement and maybe you can add hooks to hang things, jacket, leash etc or to your needs😊
Look at you all hands on deck so cool, once Steve is all dolled up it's going to be so satisfying. Keep up the great work and careful with the fumes we don't want you all high around power tools. Stay free.
Great video as always Mariah, you're doing great and even though you've a lot to do you'll get there soon enough then you can relax, chill and just enjoy your life on the road. Keep up the great work beautiful girl and keep smiling. ❤❤😘😘✨✨✨
A tiny plaque above the little pass through (doorway) and maybe a "welcome" mat there on the floor between the chairs where Finn was sleeping. It would not only help keep that area cleaner but it's also like the entrance into your home..... (smile)
Hello, from Virginia Beach. The paint choice looks amazing, the trim was perfect...love your calming nature, look forward to your videos. I know that some days are harder than others..the only easy day was yesterday, because you made it through. The build can seem overwhelming but you got this. Picture it like you are hiking up a mountain, its hard but the view when you reach the top. You are amazing..I just love Finn.
The paint looked awesome btw, like it should have always been that way. The hole from the cab into the space that is your life is now framed, which will for us viewers be epic I am sure. I also was feeling quite philisophical watching this, and how you and Finns life would be so different without each other. I think you both are so lucky to have one another and it shows. Warms my heart seeing such reciprocated love.
Maybe paint an abstract wall on the empty wall Or add states you've visited there. Maybe a map of sorts. Those are some of my ideas. Hope you can get the heater project done soon so that we can hear from you sooner ☺️
As a quick way to test roof insulation, get 4 foam boards an inch thick and some bailing wire. Drill holes in the aluminum lip that runs down both sidewalls along the roof line. String the bailing wire, fit in the foam boards and reel it in until it is snug in place. It won’t be perfect, but it will be a lot, lot better. If you don’t feel the difference take the boards back, if you do figure out how you want to keep them in long term.
I recognize the place you are now from some of your previous posts. Don't worry, I have no idea exactly where this place is, and would never give a clue even if I did. I just remember the meadow, the trees and the mountains, oh and the wooden railing that you were perched on. I know it's one of your happiest places on the continent. Please install that heater before the colder weather comes. Don't want you and Finn to get hypothermia (it's my dad mode kicking in looking out for your safety). 🤓 Sorry that I can't offer up a good suggestion for a heater as I have zero van/camper build experience. You have a great support group here who I'm sure will help solve this for you.
Nice job on the painting. Carpet job on the floor looks nice as well. I have helped a friend design and build a van. Something to consider, is you can go to Home Depot and get carpet in rolls (or the one you have), then cut this to fit on the back walls, and use liquid nails to glue it. It helps to insulate and keep noise down while driving as well. But your painting with the wood looks beautiful :) We also were able to find a Home Depot where we parked in the back parking and did the build so we could go inside and buy as needed. I love how you decorated the inside with the dried flowers. Nice touch. It takes time. Even as you plan, it takes longer than you think and harder thank you think. But it is so worth it. It is very satisfying doing it yourself. It is such a nice feeling when you have it done :) Thank you for sharing. Keep safe and enjoy!
When I was building my shuttle bus I just kept thinking about how people build houses and how long it takes. The space is way smaller than a house and I zipped through it with gusto and joy in my heart lol! Sometimes things got a little frustrating but I kept thinking ,oh my gosh a big house would have been way harder. You got this girl! I know you're going to make this super cool because the cab is so freaking cute now of what you did! ❤️
I was going to ask about sound in the cab since you didn't put any sound proofing under the carpet, but then I remember you have that big empty box making noise right now. Sometimes our brains go crazy places. Anyway, I've seen other builds where they put the heater in the cab and they all seemed pretty happy with that choice. I wish I were making the same journey. Thank you so much for sharing yours.
This was an awesome video! Tahoe is one of the most magical places on Earth. My aunt & uncle live there. One of my kids regularly drives up there just to watch the sun rise. (We are east of Sacramento if you need a free laundry/shower/pit stop place. I'm a 60 yo single mom, not a weirdo perv, lol!)

I’m so excited to watch your build! You’re doing great!! Get that insulation in so you can stay warmer!! Plus, watch out for those fumes!! As regards your cab, since it’s gonna be a reading nook, how about a nice “book shelf” and maps? Oh, and a nice reading lamp. Sending you my best!!
I’m adoring following your slow build! I’ve been thinking Stepvan for years (hope to begin within the next year) but you are opening my eyes to the possibilities of a box truck with the pass thru cut in. Love that idea. Great stealth potential. Good luck Mariah, this older trans lady is rooting for you!
Constantly checking for your new videos to be out , like one of your other followers said it’s agony to check and then wait to see if any new ones are up . I enjoy your videos so much they give me so much peace and enjoyment ,and now I’m doing small trips here in Australia with my two little chihuahuas in my recently purchased long wheel base van . You could get one of those that goes in a house and just remove the wheel there's small ones that also can act as a fan so it would save space

Applying the hook portion of adhesive 2” Velcro helps the slide.
This is a great tip!... our Toyota's snaps that hold the driver's side mat down recently broke w/o our knowledge and nearly wrecked us :/

Lawn turf on the floor, box truck forest themed that way no matter where you go the forest is always with you
I have built storage for multiple vehicles for my electrical business and I have always ended up posted at my local Home Depot and built them there.
That was soo affirming
Watching you work on Steve and singing is so soothing.
Crazy is the best way to be.
i swear this comment section is just wonderful, you guy are not only helping Mariah but also the viewers who plan on building their own van/truck into home. :D
I loved living in Tahoe. A lot to do, outdoors. I lived in S Lake off Barton Meadows, Taylor Creek. I loved hiking around Myers
At those moments when things get hard don't focus on the entire forest only the tree you are chopping at the moment. Celebrate when you complete each phase and milestone as a completed project. This helps me when I do big projects.
It is SO cosy when you're working and singing/humming along a little to your music. Warms my dead cold heart somehow 😅❤️
Wood stove like foresty forest. Renewable energy!
Fun project Mariah! You definitely have the "handy" gene! BTW, you have a very nice singing voice. Please post more of you playing guitar and singing!
I can see why you love that location, it's so beautiful and a perfect place to build your new home.
Van / truck builds are SO Complex It feels good to get little but noticeable things Done! Get things accomplished! Good Luck on your Build!
Your doing great! You’ve got to stop and smell the roses every now and then so you don’t get burned out. 👍👍
I can not tell you just how much joy your videos bring me. Looking forward to watching Steve morph into something. Thank you.
i love what you did with the cab. The flowers topped it off!
Just adding new paint and carpet the cab of the truck looks brand new, not a bad place to fit heater behind the seat. You can easily make a round hole to put pipe through into living area 🙂
I’m with joe on that! Especially if your not going to post another video until you have the heat installed! I can’t wait for your next video!
I love what you did to the cab! I think a funky picture collage would look really neat on the wall as well. Happy renovating!
There is no right or wrong. Just do what you want the way you want. It's your build... Go For It!
You are so free looking since moving from the van. Truly great to watch you blossom & enjoy your journey!
We love it. Don't even think about time. You've done it before so you know what needs to be done. I've learned from you and I will be on the road soon. When you build by yourself, everything takes tons of time.
Love the scenic views!!! The mountain backdrop is breathtaking! Just take ur time in ur cab renovations. Keep safe & ur little one...
(smile)
Love your 'I can do it' attitude. Beautiful girl living a beautiful life ❤
Hello, from Virginia Beach.
That was cool Mariah, I’m seeing a future with my truck life myself and people like you make this feel even more special.
just found this youtube and I LOVE IT. officially my new comfort streamer while I live vicariously through you
putting the box truck together like a pro. Keep up the great work looking forward to watching the rest of your journey.
Warms my heart seeing such reciprocated love.
watching the two of you is such a joy...ahh youth!, keep on truckin'
That wall is ADORABLE!
I'll remember your quote and use it on me - I think this is a gift for the future Mariah. Splendid🌷

Cleaning with Bo is SUCH a vibe, I did the same thing yesterday !!! its looking great, I always look forward to your videos ❤
Maybe paint an abstract wall on the empty wall
Or add states you've visited there.
If you don’t feel the difference take the boards back, if you do figure out how you want to keep them in long term.
holy cow buddy, what a dream of a life. I'm so jealous, please enjoy and keep posting videos for us live through your experiences. Be safe and enjoy!
Sorry that I can't offer up a good suggestion for a heater as I have zero van/camper build experience. You have a great support group here who I'm sure will help solve this for you.
I really love how you are putting your mind to something and aren’t quitting when it gets hard! Looking forward to the build!
Enjoying your journey. Love how you tackle & overcome your obstacles. A small piece of art, nicely framed, would look great on the cab wall.
From building things myself, it can seem so daunting at first but when things come together, it’s the best feeling ever. The job you are doing is awesome. Keep it up and can’t wait to se it finished
Because of the inspiration that you and Christian gave me, I bought my first van at 19 and I can’t wait to start vanlife, so thank you!
I am so glad you got recommended, I could watch hours if your journey. You’re so real and relatable and that’s what’s wrong with most of the internet now. Stay awesome 🎃
What you did in the cab looks marvelous👏👏👏
I love the carpet you have put in the front, and the back wall paint colour ….. it looks really lovely!!!
Keep posting Mariah we can’t get enough of them here
