'Random side based each round' has become my favorite. The roll is quick and easy. The players get to decide who does what during their turn. It can be a bit Chaotic, but great for games requiring strategy. Also, it's great to finish a round, then win initiative and everyone gets to go again.

Yes, that seems like a good middle ground.

Thank you! And sorry I didn't talk about Pirate Borg in more detail. :)

Great topic and video, DH. There are soooo many ways to do it -- admirable job covering a ton of bases. You should, however, do a part II. Give Troika! a little more love for its nuances (multiple tokens per 'actor' in the bag!), check out Barbarians of Lemuria for the go before / go after enemies thing that The Black Hack popularized, then here's HERO system phases, the 'shot' system from Feng Shui, ICRPG's clockwise order... the list goes on! Keep up the good work!

Thanks, sounds like I might have to publish an addendum at some point. So many different ways to handle this stuff - which is my main point. I like the recent trend towards simpler approaches, although there are some notable exceptions.

Chris McDowall’s games: Into the Odd, Mythic and Electric Bastionland are quite similar to EZD6 (I need to read that game now). Players always go first except when they might be surprised. In such a case all players make a save to determine if they go first or last. I quite like it.
Warlock! is one of my favorites, I always found that so smooth.

Yes, I love how Warlock! handles this. It's really a nice, simple, and elegant system. I haven't played Into the Odd etc. yet, but have heard great things.

I really like how both City of Mist and Avatar Legends do initiative

I don't own either of those. Based on some poking around on the web, it sounds like Avatar turns consist of three sequences, and each sequence is resolved players first, followed by NPCs. Definitely sounds interesting. And City of Mist seems to use a more loose, narrative oriented order, based on what I can tell.

Sorry Mirko, I'm a little behind and catching up.
    YEAH, HackMaster!
So, roll initiative, based on the circumstance (regular, ambushing, ready for an ambush). That's when you get to act. Then its based on your next action, be it attack, dig for a potion, etc. And it's all count up. So, start at 1, Mirko rolled a 7 for initiative. He gets to go on 7. Then, he has to decide if he's digging for that healing potion or attacking with that sword. If it's attack, add weapon speed (I think long sword is 8?) so going on 15, or looking for that potion for 1d4 seconds. He decides to attack, but gets hit hard on 10, so he changes his plan to searching for the potion. Now he rolls a d4 on 10, instead of rolling a d4 on 7.
Yes, it's not a rules light system, but it does a lot of fun things.

Cool, thanks for the explanation. Definitely sounds like a pretty unique approach. Probably more involved than my current sweet spot, but I'd love to experience it at least once at some point.

@@DigitalHobbitRPG Yeah. There's it's very intense. It's not currently in my sweet spot either. But yeah, fun for a one off.

alternative route: Mixed rotary popcorn initiative!
Everybody rolls initiative! Yaaay, booo, whatever. Whoever rolls the highest goes first!
When they're done, they choose an enemy to go!
When the gm is done with that enemy, the next player clockwise goes.
When that player is done, they choose a different enemy! Etc.

Wow, you actually managed to combine at least 4 different turn order procedures into one. Respect! 😆
