What's the best RPG for a Fallout campaign?
Is the official Fallout RPG by Modiphius the best way to run a Fallout campaign? Find out in this video! I provide a detailed overview of this game, share my impressions (based on 35 sessions of play), and go over several alternatives. I also share my thoughts on some post-apocalyptic RPGs that are *not* a good fit for a Fallout campaign, and why.

    alternative route: Mixed rotary popcorn initiative! Everybody rolls initiative! Yaaay, booo, whatever. Whoever rolls the highest goes first! When they're done, they choose an enemy to go! When the gm is done with that enemy, the next player clockwise goes. When that player is done, they choose a different enemy! Etc.

      Interesting! Can you elaborate on what it is about Cyberpunk 2020/Red that makes it a good fit for Fallout? I've considered other Cyberpunk games, but dismissed these because their focus (and skill lists etc) tend to be quite different from post-apocalyptic games (that are more about survival, resources, etc.).

    Another thought that occurs is to use Fallout to play Fallout. I wonder how much one could reverse engineer the original SPECIAL to a pen and paper format. At least “heavily inspired by”. Could probably ask Tim! That might be for a different audience though. Bethesda Fallout (and with it now the spin-offs in different media) is different from Interplay Fallout and in some ways Fallout 2 is itself distinct from Fallout…

    • @DigitalHobbitRPG
      @DigitalHobbitRPG 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Interesting, thanks for sharing! I can't find much info about that d100 game. It looks like one Fallout pen and paper game that was under development was ultimately released as the d20 based Exodus game, but not sure if that's the same thing.

    Great video. Glad you got around to GURPS as that was my tongue-in-cheek first response when I saw the title. I've been watching a bit of Tim Cain's youtube channel lately (highly recommend) and I thought it was neat that not only were they using GURPS originally but that long before it was "Fallout" the project was just "GURPS" because there were a few GURPS campaigns going on in the office over at Interplay at the time. It's a cool story to listen to Tim tell. MYZ I think you'd have to do a fair amount of work to make it feel Fallout. There's a lot of stuff there you could use but you'd be tearing out a lot of stuff like the campaign and character being inherently mutants. I definitely looked at Fallout 2d20 back in the day but I would second the thought that it tries too hard to mimic particularly Fallout 4 in its systems and mechanics. Ultimately, I'd go with the Rad Hack personally.

      @DigitalHobbitRPG 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks! I'll have to take a look at those Tim Cain videos - sounds fun! I actually never had a chance to play GURPS myself. It sounds like it's not for me given my preference for lightweight systems these days, but I probably would have enjoyed it back then. Perhaps what we really need is a post-apocalyptic Warlock! game, to join Warpstar! and Wetwired! in the series. Perhaps "Wastewalker!" or "Warwrecked!" or something.

    I also just noticed that in the end, you prefer to hand-wave carefully-tracked or modeled inventory most of the time... after going into a lot of detail regarding how many systems do it. :) (I'd admit I'm the same unless inventory management is a true focus of the game -- e.g. OSR games. Don't do it in Fate, Cortex, Outgunned, various superhero games, etc.

      @DigitalHobbitRPG 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AnonAdderlan If you're asking why I don't like that some of the Vaesen are tied to the Christian church: The conflict between the "old ways" and the "new ways" is at the heart of Vaesen. And many of the Vaesen (Giants, Trolls, Vaettir, Ghosts, etc.) date back to old Nordic folklore, long before Christianity. I feel that having Vaesen tied to relatively recent history (in the form of Christianity) weakens that focus of the struggle between the old and the new.

  • @torymiddlebrooks
    @torymiddlebrooks หลายเดือนก่อน

    From my take away from the rules this seems like a system that benefits from having a structured GMing set up. Things like count down dice for the crisis tracks, note cards to give players and journals for everyone. That's not my preferred method either.

    • @DigitalHobbitRPG
      @DigitalHobbitRPG หลายเดือนก่อน

Gotta disagree there, the YZE is as light as it gets while making thing meaningful, all the other stuff is just fluff. I say that based not only on my experience but also feedback from players who dislike the complexity of say D&D or even Savage Worlds. Anyway thanks again! I appreciate you being open and honest on your thoughts. I have about 5 minutes left in your video as I write this - but I guess you've not played any other Year Zero Engine games?

    • @DigitalHobbitRPG
      @DigitalHobbitRPG หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment! It's all relative. And yes, my YZE experience is limited: Vaesen is the only one I've run, but I've played a few one shots (e.g. Tales from the Loop, Coriolis, The Walking Dead). In terms of crunch, I'd rank it just below D&D 5e or Savage Worlds, and on par with 2d20 or Cortex Prime. My sweet spot these days is lower - e.g. EZD6, Warlock!, or Outgunned. I don't mind crunch when it really adds to the experience. But I was surprised how much crunch Vaesen combat involved, for example, given that combat is very much not the focus of the game (I only had 1 proper fight in 11 sessions). E.g. the initiative system felt completely unnecessary to me.

      I also enjoyed the review, thanks! But in your comment you put 2D20 on the same level as Y0E, I’m a bit confused and I wonder how you came to this conclusion. 2D20 have different meta currencies- how does that put them at the same level?

    • @DigitalHobbitRPG
      @DigitalHobbitRPG 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SteveDahlskog Thanks for the comment. By "same level", I'm purely referring to the level of crunch / complexity. I feel that YZE often gets touted as very lightweight, but in my opinion its complexity is about on par with the 2d20 system and a few others. Yes, 2d20 heavily uses metacurrencies and feels quite different from YZE.

    Great video. I’m going to shill for Chris McDowall again. One of my favorite ways is Electric Bastionland’s “two bulky items” rule. Characters can carry up to two bulky items, a bulky item might be heavy armor, a big weapon, a ladder, etc. Or maybe just a big collection of small items (I like to say the expedition pack of supplies: rations, rope, light is bulky). Anywho if you carry more than that you’re much more vulnerable if attacked and situationally it might suck in other ways. It’s very simple and imposes choices with a minimum of tracking and no bothering with fiddly pounds or whatever.

    Chris McDowall’s games: Into the Odd, Mythic and Electric Bastionland are quite similar to EZD6 (I need to read that game now). Players always go first except when they might be surprised. Yes my experience of the Year Zero engine is meh - its very swingy in play and the consequences of that swingyness can be quite harsh and compounding. It "just" works. I find the implementation in BladeRunner and Twilight 200 to be a bit better but the "push" issue still exists which is a clear weakness in all the games.

      This is the only YZE game I've run so far, although I've played in a few other one-shots. I definitely want to experience a few more for comparison. I believe in some, pushing only risks a condition, but doesn't guarantee it. Tales from the Loop seems a bit more easy going, for example. I'm optimistic about the new Coriolis game that they just kickstarted, which seems to be very exploration focused and has multiple stress tracks.

      @@DigitalHobbitRPG Curiously, three of the lighter YZE games (Tales from the Loop, Things from the Flood, and Vaesen, all designed by Nils Hintze) have the some of the most punishing versions of the Push mechanic. That is, a condition is automatically checked. Vaesen is a brilliant design to my eye, and I love playing and running it -- but I really dig the YZE vibes generally. There *are* a few glitches in the rules that could be cleaned up. (Less detailed / structured combat, the goofy take a condition to see if you can avoid a condition thing, and... maybe some advice on throttling the XP.)

Its often presented as a destruction and victory of what was by christianity. But in reality its more of a continium and the whole conversion and the following peasant christianity was very syncretic. That sounds fun! And yes, it definitely can be a fair amount of work. I've experimented with different styles of running games, but ultimately landed on a mostly "theater of the mind" approach, so I typically don't create battlemaps. That's made prep more manageable for me.

    I tend to play and run far more published adventures these days. When I was young we did homebrew for most things and you could attribute that to being broke. Don't get me wrong we played some modules but I definitely missed out on a lot of the classics. For instance I didn't play Keep on the Borderlands until last year.

    • @harrigantube
      @harrigantube 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm the same! I ran a few TSR modules in the first year of a five year campaign I ran in AD&D, then robbed bits and pieces... then went 100% homebrew. I *still* haven't played Keep on the Borderlands, though I'm trying to rectify that right now with a PbP game I joined. I too run more published stuff than ever before, but I think there's another reason for that: I'm pretty big into the OSR, and many modern OSR modules are *great*, really leading the industry in terms of layout, clarity, usability and creativity. That last point is what draws me in -- the ideas in these new modules are just fabulous, and things I just cannot come up with on my own.

    • @DigitalHobbitRPG
      @DigitalHobbitRPG 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Somewhat similar here, although my very first games were modules (for The Dark Eye). We quickly switched to Homebrew. I ran WFRP 1e for a few years, and I think this was all homebrew. KULT after that, as well. I picked up the Goodman Games versions of the classic modules. Maybe I'll run some of them with a modern ruleset like EZD6 or Shadowdark at some point. But as someone who didn't grow up playing D&D, I don't really have nostalgia for these. I'm more drawn towards more recent OSR modules.

      @DigitalHobbitRPG 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are many different playstyles. Many groups prefer to play more tactical games, using maps and miniatures. A VTT can help replicate that experience when playing online. Even with more narrative focused games, or traditional games but using theater of the mind instead of maps and minis, a VTT can be helpful to share character sheets and dice rolls. There's nothing wrong with preferring to use VTTs, and I do sometimes use VTTs myself. I'm just pointing out some more lightweight alternatives that I think work well with many games. Go with whatever option feels most natural to you. :)

    For the google sheets version of DIY Vaesen, you might enjoy using Owlbear Rodeo alongside - doesn't deal with character sheets but gives you an easy shared screen and dice roller. Probably about the level of Roll20 control, including drawing and dropping down images wherever you want, but aesthetically closer to Alchemy in terms of interface.

    • @DigitalHobbitRPG
      @DigitalHobbitRPG 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, Owlbear Rodeo is great. Although I tend to use it on those few occasions where I mostly play theater of the mind (using Google Sheets and Discord) and just very rarely need a map. The downside is that at that point you're juggling at least three different windows/tabs (Discord, Owlbear, and Google Sheets or a form-fillable PDF). So if I consistently need these elements, I'm more likely to go a step further and use a VTT like Foundry that also handles character sheets (and in case of Vaesen, also has all the game's content fully integrated, making it easy to pull up NPCs, upgrade characters, etc.).

I actually do my ttrpg (and creative stuff in general) reflections in mid-August because that's when I first started building my own homebrew settings (originally for D&D 5e, but now all of my projects are in Cortex and other systems). While I don't yet have much experience playing ttrpgs, being in these communities and experimenting with different systems has already taught me a lot.
