How to write a proposal on upwork
    1. research
    what to look for
    2. framework to work on
    write a proposal
    3. place the proposal, get paid
    1:23 Example
2:40 How to write a good bid on upwork?
    2:42 #1 Research
2:50 first look at the questions from the client
    3:50 Credibility & trust
5:00 then look at the description to figure out how to proceed
    5:53 click Submit a Proposal
6:32 write a letter emphasizing: credibility, reliability, value
    6:45 #a establish credibility
8:37 pick up the right project
    9:42 #b demonstrate reliability
10:00 demonstrate attention to details = read the proposal
    11:15 #c sell value
    12:15 #d instill fear
14:56 #e price the proposal: check the market (for 1 hour PHP developpement, e.g. 60 $), estimate a duration (20 hours),
16:56 double the result to have more time, maybe give money back: everybody is happy
17:39 nobody is happy with you underbid and it takes longer
18:12 estimate what the client will be willing to pay
20:26 is this worth it to me?

Could you show a proposal that you gave or create a full proposal to show us as an example. And also show your profile, it will really help to know where to go and to start.

It is a smashing one off product for getting paid to write at home without the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my work buddy at last got amazing success with it.

Fab video, thanks. I love the way you prioritise the importance of getting paid what you want, many designers are kind of forced to bid low because we think we don't deserve to be paid higher.

hey! I didn't think much of this video but I implemented exactly what you said to do. I gave the client plenty of examples and really concentrated on how I can help him and get him the result he wanted. I got a response! 100% success rate so far! He seems interested in what I have to offer and I'm confident I can close him!
I'll update if this changes but you can be safe to assume I just closed my first client :) it's a fixed $100 contract job!! Thanks John! (I'm a complete noob on Upwork)

I build ecommerce sites so in the process of creating a few and even adding them into functionality outside of the system like for use on ebay and amazon, it's a whole lot of fun working these things out. I am very good at getting down to the fundamentals of how something works lol.

John im not into coding at all but Ive found your course to be insanely helpful even though Im only a few parts in. The research section alone blew my mind just now as i have multiple skills (Video editing, writing, social media ect). Upon following your advice I just started researching and its shocking the difference between social media/marketing (what i will be studying soon) vs a skill i have (video editing). Saw examples of guys doing marketing who made over 500k on upwork [insert mind blown emoji]...
The research step alone is an eye opener. Cant wait to get on with the rest of the course!

From the template you've shown us in this video, what's your response rate in relation to how many proposals you send per day.
For example, if you're sending 20 proposals per day, how many responses are you getting?

Thanks for the video John, very informative and helpful. Out of curiosity, do you have any rough stats on how effective this approach has been compared to how you did it before using this approach? I'd be interested to see how this approach alone has helped improve your success.

    • @john.morris
      @john.morris  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Brent Harris That IS hard to do because, as you might imagine, several different things were all coming together at once as I went through this. Roughly though, I started out charging $25/hour (which was still a ton for me) to $90 by the time I left Elance/Upwork. No idea on conversion rate number-wise... but I know the "feel" for me was pretty dramatic. Seemed like I couldn't win any job at first... and by the time I left I kept having to turn my availability off because I was getting invited to so many jobs and Elance/Upwork actually punished a bit for turning down a certain percentage of jobs. Take all that for what it's worth to you. I know it's not really hard numbers but maybe some idea.

  • @filips989

This is a good concept, but it still won't work if you're new to Upwork and if you're not an American (in most cases). I've signed up to Upwork to do some CAD design. I have a mechanical engineering background, I can read technical drawings better than I can read letters, I do CAD in my spare time. So, I have no Upwork feedback, so what do I do? I go out and try to find some entry jobs (I've even opted to do some pro bono, for some really easy stuff i could have done in literally minutes). No invites.
Ok, I have no portfolio there, so I start looking for people who put a small reference image in the job description, or some basic details. I've actually gone and MADE rough CAD models before sending a proposal, I render the image in SolidWorks and send it to the client. My cover letter usually consists of me explaining what I can do for them, how I could do it and what I would focus on. I include my rendered image along with something in the line of "I have no portfolio here, but I've done a rough model, feel free to look at it and contact me with more information...", something like that. Not one interview, message, invite, nothing.
And you would think my models are bad or something, but from the point I send my proposal I only need to put in the client's dimensions into the model. It's all done, it could be a 10 minutes work or a 3 hours work, I would have it done 1-30 minutes after I get the job. But still nothing.
So yeah, if you want the job, you'll have to have some blind luck at the beginning, I don't see how that might work any differently. And in most cases, be an American.

I only go after Expert projects. I also sometimes include Intermediate. I landed two long term high paying clients from the intermediate section.

    • @marafx2008

Hi. So just to start with I do SEO on page in elance/upwork and pph.com. I started from ground and builtup and I was and am fortunate to work with the same client for almost 3 years already! You can see my profile in Upwork- no secrets!
How did I? Well no special things, just spoke directly without false pride, not humble but with respect. And I also block any client that asks for outside upwork payments or stuff. I do not kiss at first date. So as long as a client wants to build trust I need to trust client too.
Now passing to your question... somebody with no work hours in upwork. Well, you are not a newborn so you shoudl have some work done before getting into upwork. And some self advertising too. Every freelancing branch, be it web design, writing, seo, ppc, whatever you want, if is freelancer it means the person should market herself and not stay and wait that jobs rain from the sky. Be active, be present in social, dedicated communities, there are even people sending work proposals to clients directly... just don't stay and wait to be discovered.

hello there man i am studying and have not had experience in freelancing. In the future I want to be a book illustrator and I want to use up work to get my clients. As I am studying I have heard that when doing freelance jobs dont always come immediately after you finish one job, the next job cud cloud come to you in the next month. O know that it will take time to build building yourself as a brand to get clients to call you and work for them but can you talk the realities of just starting out and how often will you keep getting the next job. (anyone in the chat that is looking at this and wants to give there advice or opinion is also welcomed)

Hello John. Wonderful and very informative video. My problem with starting to work on Upwork is that at the moment I don't have a bank account. So let's say I finish a project and everything is set for me to receive my payment, is that payment stored on my Upwork account and then when I've created my bank account I can link it to Upwork and withdraw the money, or I have to have a bank account from the get go ?

I believe you can link after the fact. Not 100% sure though. I'd check with them.

Hey guys I have a question.. Do you pay attention to the ammount of proposals the job offer has? I always try to send a proposal when it says it has 5 proposals or less, but lately I've been thinking whether this really matters and If it is really beneficial or not for me.. Thanks for the attention

I never did. Most of the good jobs are gonna have lots of proposals, so you're cutting yourself off from a lot of good projects. And, I also assumed most of the proposals probably weren't that great, so even if it had 30+ proposals, 2/3 might not be that great.
