I got a 22" 1050P monitor for £7. Of course its a dell, but for being 1680 x 1050, i use it as my secondary monitor. Not bad for being only £7 Edit: Just incase you lot are wondering, it works without any flaws. And its a Dell E228WFP With DVI and VGA inputs. No issues with the screen, no dead pixels.
I got a dell 1280x1024 monitor for $10, and on a different day, I got another 1920x1080 dell monitor for around the same price. They are both used as secondary monitors now, and both work great!
I didn't believe you can purchase a computer monitor for such an extremely cheap price, but I can see why this one was only sold for not a whole lot of money.
@rplgn You mean the Windows 98 welcome music? Thanks! I uploaded that video back in 2012 when I was having lots of fun with classic Windows operating systems, so I appreciate your wonderful comment about it.
Aside from free throwaways, usually thrift store monitors would cost me $5, and that’s when I’d commonly collect CRTs. So far they’ve all worked great. But for just a buck, it would be hard to refuse, even if it’s broken.
I own that Gateway monitor. I bought it in 2007 and I still have it, and it still "works." Those touch buttons can be unresponsive at times, I wish they used regular push buttons. The multiple inputs made the monitor my living room TV for a while.
I love going to the thrift stores and checking for old tech. I got all three of my monitors at Goodwill. Two 22 inch monitors and a 32 inch TV all for under $75 USD!!! Great video man!!

Also of you add your Google account to the Google tv box you can update all the apps, TH-cam and chrome may work better once updated. Also get the proper time and date setup on the box as well
I have a Sony Internet TV. It's basically that set-top box, inside a TV (with the same remote). I like it, but it's discontinued by both Sony and Google. I actually use a Chromecast connected to it to watch TH-cam as the built-in TH-cam app doesn't work anymore. It is indeed running Android 3.2 Honeycomb. It's also x86 (as you mentioned). There are not many apps that you can actually install on here.

I actually found an old CRT monitor for the grand price for free at a garage sale around a month ago, and it looks and works great, but unfortunately it's only VGA compatible. Still awesome for old video games! Edit: welp, that should have been expected hahaha

22:20 Didn't expect to see Play Store in that menu! It was still called Android Market in 2010 or 2011, and since this device or its Logitech companion were not exactly a success, I'm sort of surprised this would receive updates until at least 2012, as proved by Play Store (by that modern name) being installed there.
Also for capture devices - you can get generic HDMI one from Aliexpress for like $6 - it works very well. You can use it along with Wii2HDMI adapter and you're all set.
I did buy a cheap monitor for $2 about 3 or 4 years ago from a consignment shop and I still use it for my living room PC -- it is light weight and works great.

The Sony Internet TV is interesting. You might be able to put a lightweight version of Linux on it and use it for media. Or if it still plays Blu-rays you can use it for that, but the codecs and such are outdated. Good conversational piece. I saw someone on Amazon selling one fir $80.

I have that exact Gateway monitor on the worktable behind me. I use it for testing new builds/parts, but it was originally purchased by my uncle to use in his store as a security monitor due to its multiple input types. It has served me well in the last 6 years, though the 16:10 aspect ratio has given me a few issues over the years.
I loved the Sony Internet TV! I still have two. My instincts are kicking in and now I wanna see if it could actually run a desktop OS (Linux or Windows)!
I just recently bought a HP 2210i LCD monitor for 10$. It has white spot in the upper left corner which comes up when used for 1 hour. And 3 dead pixels in the corner. But it is working and the screen quality is awesome
I found a monitor at a salvation army for 5 bucks so many years ago, monitor completely works to this day, it was a steal. My assumption as to why it was sold was that it was an accessory for a laptop, and once that laptop was done with, they were also done with the monitor. It works perfectly, no issues other than the massive stand.
my monitor was free, got it off the facebook marketplace and they were around the corner from me. That was 4 years ago and its still going strong. 1440x900 20 something inch
I wonder if there's a custom version of a newer Android you can put on that Google TV; many phones' lives got extended thanks to Android community that way, so maybe it's worth checking?
Huh. the funny thing is that i currently use this exact DELL monitor, the only difference is that its a 16:9 model. its been serving me for like 7 years now and i still think its great.
That looks like a Dell 2209WA. It's a great monitor but I had it replaced multiple times because of various hardware failures. After the third time they gave me a different model that is still working to this day. Edit 3:00: it's for the best. On the bright side you have a Dell stand you can use with other dell monitors, depending on the weight. I vaguely remember there being a Dell stand to VESA adaptor that exists. You might be able to get one of those and use it with another monitor....🤔
I love the stand hotswapping on dell monitors. I had an old crap dell monitor lying around (don't worry, not my main one) and I bought a different 1920x1080 dell monitor from a thrift store for ~$10, but it didn't have a stand, so I just took the stand from the old one and snapped it onto the new one, and boom, 3rd monitor.
Broken laptops are an incredible source for working panels. So beside the panel, you'd need a (universal) LCD controller board and a LVDS cable to connect the panel to that board. Since the board that came with the monitor is unlikely to drive a panel of different making. Both found for cheap on ebay, amazon, you name it. These boards usually require 12V power, so a power brick is necessary too, chances are you already have a few spares, they're extremely common. The new controller board has its own IO, so some cutting into the plastic might be necessary to make space. A rotary tool can get rid of excess plastic in the blink of an eye. If you want the face buttons to work, then there are buttons that work with said controllers, to be found on the same sites. Or, Method B: you somehow find a panel that is compatible with the board you already have, but that's the more costly method in most cases, but it's less work.
Goodwill sells their monitors at $10(assuming there is no sale), regardless of resolution, size, or if all the ports work or not. The only difference I've seen is if it's got a coaxial and/or full composite/component ports with speakers, then it's considered a small TV and sold at $30. I've got 2 secondary monitors for $20 around a week ago and both work perfectly using the DVI ports on my 1050TI. This might be good for another video, but whenever Goodwill gets desktop computers they sell them at $50 if they are working with an OS out of the box or $30 if it doesn't have an OS or storage device installed, considering they also sell keyboard and mice at $4 each, you can have an entire entry-level gaming setup for about $98(I was using the price of the GT730 due to it being cheap, it only using 25W of power, and it being LP) only shopping at Goodwill and getting the graphics card and HDD on eBay. Also, great find on the capture card! I have an HD60S, and I got a composite to HDMI adapter on Amazon for $15 to record stuff off my Wii and OG Xbox. Which was I assumed most YTers use until recently.
I got 2 different monitors, both for 1 dollar with working panels and all. Found it at a flea market in my neighborhood which is primarily old people which is probably why.
I’m pretty sure I had that Gateway monitor as a kid, or a very similar rebadged one with all those inputs. It was very useful in a compact space in our trailer where we could hook up both our PC and the PS2/3.
My secondary monitor for about 3 years was only 3$ from my local Value Village. My tv was only like 10$. You can get some really cool stuff for super cheap there.
Not too long ago, I had a Sony NSZ-GS7 internet player with Google TV. It had a funky two-sided remote with the Qwerty keyboard on one side and a "touch pad" on the other. It was about a quarter the size, but it also did not have an optical drive. It too had the HDMI pass through and did PIP. The Chrome on it was so obsolete, the Play store just laughed at me when I tried to download anything. I ended up donating it to my local thrift store...
I got a 4:3 Dell P1913S monitor from a charity thrift shop for 10 bux. It's got a dead pixel on it but otherwise it's got great colors, great viewing angle, and it's very adjustable.
all I'm going to say about that gateway monitor is check the power supply capacitors because monitors from that time have high power supply failure rates, and also it's a nice monitor
I actually work within a 2nd hand/thrift shop and this is apparently not too uncommon to see monitors under $5 because people have been donating a lot of them lately, 1280x1024 being the most common resolution Though we do some quality check to make sure it's not broken before it ends up in the store lol
The monitor I'm using right now was purchased at a thrift store for $1-2, as were all of my backup monitors. Not that I really need backup monitors, as these work pretty good. In fact, the only reason I have more than one is because some of my older games don't support widescreen.
i used to have one of those gateway monitors, it was a pretty good display for what it was, it was solid with the metal stand and the picture was pretty good. two things to know is that if the area where the touch buttons are, if they get dirty enough the buttons can activate on their own leading to the menu popping up and the thing turning itself off and things like that. the other and bigger issue that I had with it was that the capacitors on the power supply board failed. they used CapXon brand capacitors and they went bad, of course that is easy to fix. I sold it with a computer i sold a while back and i would assume it is still working if the people are still using that old XP machine I sold them about 3 years ago. I use a CRT as my main display or i would have kept it.
i found a dell ultra sharp monitor on the side of the road, it’s older but works perfectly! it’s in 4:3 aspect ratio but that’s okay because i gave it to my brother to use as a second monitor
You can look up your user agent string, it'll look something like "Chrome/86.0.4240.75" (Current latest stable release) Google TV was discontinued in June 2014, the latest Chrome version then was 35

For the Android TV device, you should see if there are any ways to root and to install a custom ROM to it in order to make it more up to date.
I'd bet once he signs into it, it could download some app updates from the play store.
all I'm going to say about that gateway monitor is check the power supply capacitors because monitors from that time have high power supply failure rates, and also it's a nice monitor
I actually work within a 2nd hand/thrift shop and this is apparently not too uncommon to see monitors under $5 because people have been donating a lot of them lately, 1280x1024 being the most common resolution
Though we do some quality check to make sure it's not broken before it ends up in the store lol
The backpack is official. I had the same one, ordered it through a seasonal catalog I got while being subscribed to Nintendo Power.
i love the gateway monitor it has so mutch ports and even dvi for 2007
From what I remember back when CompUSA was still a thing. (was working there when they closed there stores). The Dazzle was $79.99.
The monitor is worth it just for the stand imo even if broken, you could probably find one with an electrical fault and switch boards out etc.
The monitor I'm using right now was purchased at a thrift store for $1-2, as were all of my backup monitors. Not that I really need backup monitors, as these work pretty good. In fact, the only reason I have more than one is because some of my older games don't support widescreen.
No keyboard or keyboard error. Press to continue...
when i heard that music at the beginning i thought he was gonna be comparing headphones
On that freaky ears on a stick
i used to have one of those gateway monitors, it was a pretty good display for what it was, it was solid with the metal stand and the picture was pretty good. two things to know is that if the area where the touch buttons are, if they get dirty enough the buttons can activate on their own leading to the menu popping up and the thing turning itself off and things like that. the other and bigger issue that I had with it was that the capacitors on the power supply board failed. they used CapXon brand capacitors and they went bad, of course that is easy to fix.
I got a nice Dell E2414H 24" for $8 at a local Good Will. No scratches no dead pixels. just needed a power and a DVI cords :D
had I known you needed a capture device back then, I would have totally hooked you up!
I actually bought an lg monitor for 10 cents on a local ebay like site back in 2014 that still works fine.
Does some one remember when Apple created CRT displays?
The ADC one was the best IMO
Apple Studio CRT Display
Produced, not created.
The Emac.
were you not allowed to test the first screen at the store? The thrift stores near me have power cables there for you to turn on the monitor
I "found" a 32" White, Curved Screen Samsung monitor at the local Dump, brought it home, paid £10.00 for a power adaptor and it works perfectly.
My monitor is from a thrift store. They work pretty good (there usually 1080p, 60fps)!
You can look up your user agent string, it'll look something like "Chrome/86.0.4240.75" (Current latest stable release)
Google TV was discontinued in June 2014, the latest Chrome version then was 35
You have a good eye for thrift shop goodies. I love your videos!
the song in the intro, i have to get my huh duh 6 hungoes for that
I have this exact same monitor. i got it at good will for $5 and its in perfect working order
Why did you get the Sony Google TV thing? for the blu ray player only?
Dude pip is so cool, I wish more modern TVs had it
What about trying to install another OS like Windows on that Sony TV box? It would be a pretty interesting thing to try since that box is x86-based
7:10 I was watching that in picture-in-picture mode LMFAO
that Gateway monitor tho, looks pretty handy will all of these ports, I would use it as a secondary monitor because I have a main, lol
i found multiple 1 penny monitors in working condition on ebay
Hopeful you have better luck with that Dazzle. I bought Dazzle DVC150 and it only works with 32bit Windows and only with their own software.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but to see the chrome version, you type "chrome://version".
I have that exact same model on monitor on my Frankenstein gaming setup lol
25:33 It's a bit of a hail mary but maybe you could get the version checking the browser user-agent
