Such an interesting and poignant detail that Ruby made her first friend and ally in a strange new world by simply showing a bit of kindness to a small creature that anyone else might have overlooked. A smaller, more honest soul indeed.

I think in the case of Ruby Rose, 'Morally correct or virtuous' is a pretty good reading of 'honest.' But a few of the others work as well ('simple, unpretentious, and unsophisticated' perhaps.)

Also, it's interesting to look at the way Ruby's voice pitches. When she's happy, excited, or trying to put on a brave face, she gets squeakier, chirpier. Now, without her friends to keep up the Keep Moving Forward act towards, and with the past few volumes of trauma hammering down on her, her voice is lower. More tired. Understandably so.

I honestly LOVE the fact that Ruby’s voice has a more deeper tone, given to what she had experienced a few moments ago before falling.

Honestly Even in volume 1, she had a deeper tone. Probably because Lindsay was still trying to find a good fitting voice. Then it got a bit higher pitched. Now as Ruby's getting older, its gotten deeper again.

Although I must admit I always thought we would get characters based on the people from the book but they did one better and actually made an alternate dimension.

It's interesting to note: the rain starts when Ruby starts crying. It stops when she fully shifts to a different emotion, in this case, the surprise that Little can speak (yes there are a few more drops, but that's probably because the water is on the leaves). It looks like parts of this world can be influenced by the emotions of the inhabitants, at least partly.
Or perhaps it's the magic of the silver eyed warrior that is interfering with the natural magic of this world that they are now in

I do like the changes in ruby's voice as she's trying to talk to this mouse in a normal way while having just barely escaped with her life and desperately trying to not have a meltdown and her voice actor really does a good job of this she's clearly on edge and given the whole going in circles thing just aggravated her it's definitely interesting to see this mixture of emotion's she barely keeping down with her fumbling over her words and barely able to socialize adequately which is a major 180 from what we've usually seen

This is a promising start. A Wonderland-esque world where nothing seems to make sense, and a nice convo that subtle digs into the deeper struggles Ruby has.
This is literally the least promising start of any volume. The dialogue is a step up from that of other volumes but that's simply because the bar is set so low. Trying to put this Isekai shit in RWBY of all shows is quite literally the worst the decision the writers have ever made, which is saying a lot.
It has good potential but.... this is RT. They'll find some way to completely fuck it up

Actually feels like Wonderland of confusion and lost of area. The mouse can talk and many unuasual things, i love the connection of meet this mouse who know no person of her kind. I can finally see Ruby breaking into tear after holding back so long. They all going have lot of self confliction and so how damage this journey has taken on them and new slef discoveries. I can't for 2023.

@@kuroraijin So I am, this is probably the first American anime aside from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Korra, and Netflix's Castlevania. After rewatching all 8 volumes I'd say this one is going to be quite different from. For Volume 9 I wish to see the Ever After's Jabberwocky who may be inspired by Smaug, lessons about fighting your inner demons, the full design of Vacuo, and underwater sequences with Team RWBY because we don't any water scenes in the series. Blake and Yang must kiss for crying out loud!

I really wanna see Jaune and Neo together in this (not in a romantic sense), but in a way of where they’re forced to acknowledge that they stand better chances of surviving if it’s together. Hell both can understand what the other has been through, Loss of someone they truly loved and cared for.

Guys I just realized that this the first time in forever since Volume 1 since we heard Ruby’s deeper voice-
This is already one of the most charming things I’ve ever seen. The character animation is so expressive and the voice acting is already incredible, I hope this level of polish stays throughout the whole volume.
The human and animal models look fine, but the rendering of the environment reminds me of Game Cube levels. Albeit with better colors.

I like the tone that Ruby was speaking in. Much more relaxed and natural than usual, which is funny considering how different it still is from Lindsey's actual voice.
And it's always a pleasure to hear Luci, I'm glad she's coming back to the show. Her performance as Fria was lovely, and Little seems like she'll be a fun character.

I never thought I'd be so moved by a mouse asking "What's wrong?" but here we are.
Also Ruby sounds so darn hopeless here which just hammers to town how volume 8 ended again.
Realistically, Blake and Ruby should be somewhere near each other. Neo wouldn't be far behind. Yang falling first would have had time on the island already, especially if time works different. Weiss would arrive next and Jaune last. I hope the writers didn't forget that little detail. I wouldn't mind the first episode just being Ruby and Blake as they try to find out where they are only for them to discover Yang at the very end of the episode.

I mean to be fair, this season is clearly trying to do Alice in Wonderland, so logic is probably gonna get thrown out the window for this one.
I'm liking this slower pacing, a nice changeup from the constant high stakes and high drama. Already we're starting to get introspective with "that's a lot of things" and "To Ruby Rose is your purpose?". This is a good place for the group to catch their breath, and regather themselves, even if it's still under distressing circumstances!
I hope this volume can teach me some lessons about myself, and that others pull something similar. I’ve been struggling to understand what it means to be the child of my makers, to embody my name. I rarely feel connected to a body or name these days, very dissociative very often, so lets hope this Alice in Wonderland style trip gives a moral lesson, of sorts.

To some extent, I think we've all had to confront those multifaceted aspects of ourselves, come to terms with them and forge our own identity with reverence to where we came from. Sometimes we look in the mirror and wonder "is this really me? Or what I think I should be but am not?" "Am I living in a way that honors my parents and the name they gave me?" Answers to these don't come easily, and can even be ugly when we choose to look deep down. None of this is easy, rarely anything worth it in life ever is, but I hope you begin to find some answers that can align you more with all the parts of your self and ultimately who you choose to be!

They did say vol 9 would be a break volume w whats happening. Tho it will be shorter. Its like vol 4, just them catching a break(kinda) and probably learn more about themselves and might result in them evolving(?)/discovering(?) their semblance to a diff height like how ren did

Seeing ruby cycle through through her emotions as she runs around trying to find everyone and breakdown in frustration was different and the quote “that’s a lot of things” HIT…DIFFERENTLY
Every bit of information introduced was called back to except for intentional threads which will guide the characters along the story
Great scene I hope the rest of the volume can be like this because it will blast volume 3 out of the water especially with an emotional crescendo to cap it all off

@@Shadow_of_Echos seems the same thing that happened with volume 4 is also occurring with this volume. Volume 4 had a 2-year gap with its release, unlike with the first three volumes and their annual airings.
I like how quiet and thoughtful this clip was at the start and the follow up to a sort of melancholic conversation that “Little” thinks is a casual one. There’s an air of introspection here that I’m excited to see.
It seems that “names” play a part in where ever Ruby is now. It’s like a world without labels on things.
Well, in one of the very first episodes, they mention that color-based names are very common because of one of the older empires (forget which), forbid expression, and it was a way of rebelling. I only caught that on my second time through and loved it. It’s also very organic, as only a few of the names are color related, where-as some heavy-handed cartoons would have named everyone colors.
Indeed. In particular, it seems she's in a world where one's name is their purpose. Note how Little asks both "how to Ruby Rose", and "how to Little", specifically. It's a lot like the names from ancient times, where your name was also a description of who you were. Where, to give an easily-recognisable example, you wouldn't introduce yourself as "My name is Abraham", you'd introduce yourself as "My name is Father of Many Nations". Ruby's in a place where your name isn't just what others call you, your name is _who you are_ .
another thing is that the question "what are you?" is repeated a lot in the teaser

Like king tut's name of Tutankhanum meant the living image of Amun aka Amun-Ra the chief diety of the New Kingdom.
I mean, the people of Remnant are all named after colors as a way of reaffirming the importance of art and self-expression after a world war was fought with the intention of banning them. It would appear that this world has its own naming scheme with its own in-universe justification.
The fact this went from "End of the World/Destroy all Humanity" vibes in Volume 8 to seriously emulating a Wonderland-esque setting is refreshing. I also was as surprised as Ruby when "Little" spoke.
Genuinely am hoping this lives up to expectations, and that the fan-base doesn't tear it to shreds for not giving over to what they WISH the series had been. RWBY has been one of those series that started out in one vein -- to which I have nothing but utter respect for the late Monty Oum -- then switch gears to reflect the ideas and writing of Kerry and the team, who had the gigantic task of taking up after Monty died and running with it. As a writer, I understood the reasons and the "tropes" behind a LOT of the series' turns and takes, and it made me irked when fans who felt they "knew RWBY better than the writers" started blasting it for "mistakes" taken with the narrative and directions they took.
But this Volume 9 clip gives me hope that the fans will get past the prior volumes and come back to just enjoying the story and watching to see what happens next.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way about RWBY and how the FNDM treats it- I personally love the series and even with its flaws (which I can definitely acknowledge) it holds up as my favourite epic fantasy and it has exceeded all of my expectations from when I first picked up the foreshadowing and hints of character arc in the first couple volumes ^^
Honestly mate? If they’re still complaining by volume 8, I doubt volume 9 is going to change their minds. Some are stuck in the past and had their own idea with the show that anything different would be seen as a disaster in their eyes. It’s better to just find enjoyment in what you can because it’s impossible to please everyone.
Ya know, now that I got a good listen to Little's voice, doesn't she sound familiar to anyone, cause I'm telling ya, I know that I've heard that voice somewhere before, but I just can't put my finger on it. 🤔

This already is slaps and I can tell that volume nine is going to hit harder than I expected just by hearing Ruby's voice a little different than make her sound much more older and that they're in a whole different world that even the mouse doesn't know will tell me that this is going to be a great story arc we're going to be in
This makes me causiously optimistic. They seem to have a better peace, better character work, and better setup than Vol 8. But only time will tell if this will hold out for the whole season. It's a lot harder to write a good and consistent show than a good and consistent scene.

I have a theory which essentially boils down to Monty having left behind notes of his plan for RWBY that translate to the better parts of the show and the rougher stuff is what the team had to do to fill in the gaps. Volume 9 seems like it will be one of those better parts, just based on this.

Well Ruby was like, 13-15 in volume 1. Her classmates were like, 16+ so it's natural that she sounds more mature now than she did before because our little Rose is becoming an adult pretty soon. Plus, she did went through some traumatic events.. Those kind of events will affect your personality and mindset.

Love the detail about Ruby watching cartoons, because of course a mouse would be afraid of someone resembling a cat.
This seems like we'll get a slower volume, with more character-focused moments.
Would've been cool to see Ruby use Petal Burst to try and break through the loop though, ending with her just kinda coming to a stop and hopping along on one leg as her other leg catches up to her and reassembles. But I guess she doesn't have the aura for that right now.
Without a doubt, this combination of RWBY and Alice in Wonderland looks too crazy and disturbing. I'm afraid that each of the characters is going to have a mental breakdown and go crazy (Ruby probably with all the traumas she's been through and been bottling up and now with Penny's death she’ll breakdown, she's going to get really bad; Weiss is sure to feel bad and think that he won't see his family again, Blake and Yang I'm not sure what kind of trauma they will suffer, but I think it will have to do with Adam Taurus, Neo will probably have hallucinations with Roman and Jaune will probably experience trauma and depression for killing Penny)
Without a doubt, I liked the references to Wonderland and that bird that resembles a Dodo, when Ruby sits crying under the palm tree and it starts to rain, it reminds me of when Alice was locked in the room and couldn't out because of its size and when the little mouse asks: What are you?, it reminds me when the caterpillar asks Alice: Who are you?
This gets more and more intriguing. I can't wait to see Volume 9. 😢😥🥺

She's started sounding like this around Volume 6/7.
Her voice actor Lindsay has said before that Ruby has a tendency to put on an act in front of people, trying to make it seem like she's perfectly okay, in order to keep the mood up for everyone and help them be strong. It makes sense for her to let her true feelings show when her friends aren't around, like when she smashed the bottle she found next to Qrow on the farm in Volume 6. No one was awake to see her frustration, so we got to see her get so angry that her hand started shaking, and then she threw the bottle. Her behavior totally changed when Qrow woke up.

I appreciate it when films or television shows present their main characters to show weakness and self-doubt, it makes you more empathetic towards the characters and makes them out to be a lot more human.
In all honesty I’m just really hyped, and I know that’s not exactly a good idea, regarding some of the Slipups, but I have faith that they’ll make this section of the journey feel more grounded rich and not rushed.

Volume 9 is going be very intriguing to see. It makes sense that Ruby is getting more depressed now, we've seen that in volume 3, she did try to be put on a brave face in volumes 4-7, but you can tell that depression is still there. I can only imagine what Jaune's mental health is like now, after what Penny asked him to do. Yang, Blake and Weiss too. Some people really want to know more about Ruby's mother, and I don't blame them. Several theories circulate around Summer Rose.

I know this volume isn't out yet but I'm already loving it so far just from this video.
This clip makes it clear that names describe the purpose of the beings in Ever After. This is reminiscent of what the God of Light said about humanity straying from their path.
My current theory is that a name is enforced unto the person, making this volume a struggle for identity as what each character is named and who they are could contradict the other. Evil Jaune in the teaser is possibly him considering himself a killer and that Lady in Flames reinforces this viewpoint to manipulate him. If i'm right how this effects the main four will be interesting.
I doubt that the knight in the teaser is Jaune.

Volume 8 was a constant stakes ratcheting rollercoaster ride. We didn't get Chibi so a wonderland romp will be a welcome change of pace and a breather before the final stretch.

I love how Ruby only asks about Blake and Yang because she assumed that Jaune and Weiss would have defeated Cinder. I also thought that the both of them would have killed Cinder and taken the Relics, Salem would be stuck with Ironwood, and either Weiss or Ruby would have inherited Cinder’s Maiden powers.
Looks good, hope Ruby gets more character development.
Considering what the main question of this series: her, Jaune, Neo and the rest of Ruby's team would also be getting serious character development.

Ruby doesn't know that Jaune fell after her right? Will we finally see Jaune developing a new fighting style on the island? considering he no longer has his weapon, I think it's a good opportunity to improve the character's skills, not to mention the search for a new weapon.
Or he already has a base going and is waiting for help, remember what family he comes from: they'd make sure he's prepared for every possibility the world could possibly throw at him.

The tree gives me Yggdrasil vibes. I'm imagining this is going to centre on a "Rebirth" type of arc. Or just something to do with Life in general. Wondering why Jaune and not the rest of his team showed up here, too... makes me wonder about something and whether or not it'll happen...
I wonder if they will tie a bit of Nordic lore into that tree, I thought the same thing. Maybe it’ll be some means of getting off the island like how Yggdrasil connects to the different realms, maybe this tree will do something like that too.
This was such a joy, even if the weight of everything is really getting to Ruby.
Finally, the content of the main show. Not games, not spinoffs that I really think were too early or a waste of resources, but the main show. Something to hopefully enjoy more of on 2023.

That's a rocking horse(fly) at the first few seconds. This seems to be a ridiculous world full of other fairy tale creatures like Alice in Wonderland. There's a shot of the Cheshire Cat in the teaser, and I assume the gods made things nonsensical in this new world so the people couldn't turn on them like Salem. A lack of conflict maybe? That's assuming they had any say in this place and it's not just their failed attempts that were tossed away

I don't think it's devoid of conflict, at the very least, based on the cat mention, predator - prey or some similar mechanic seems to exist.

@@antonitocotter447 afaik the brother gods are above the cycle of life - When Jin(n) tells them about the origin of Salem, the Gods argue about Ozma's resurrection not based on being able to, or having to respect the cycle of life because of some external reasons, but because those are the rules the two have agreed upon to uphold in this world.

One of those sequences (squeakuences) was showing the passage of time every time Ruby looped around. But yeah, it was adorable!
She's frustrated for not finding her friends, ends up in tears, dear girl you have to start slow, you've been through too much for your age you have to calm down. She'll find them eventually but I feel like this process can't be rushed, there's a lot to learn from this place, it's like an island to discover all around you but most importantly discover yourself. Damn man, I feel like this will be the biggest character development Ruby's had ever. It will open her eyes to some impossibilities, her and her friends, maybe even open her eyes to the fact that indeed sales indestructible but no unreachable

Ever since late in Vol 8 I've noticed a change in Lindsay's performance. Either Lindsay can't hit that high pitch as consistently anymore or they're purposefully making Ruby sound less chid-like in some places as part of the character's growth/development. Either way, I like it and it works.
It's on purpose(and thank god for it), she's mentioned it before and the first few episodes of RWBY actually had her voice lower and closer to her natural speaking voice before they made her pitch it up so ruby sounded younger.
The only one who physically cant speak like they used to is miles, that's why jaunes voice is so much deeper now.
Yeah Lindsay absolutely can reach the high still. Their performance as Ruby in the Ice Queendom dub is still right up there.

Totally agreed. And I think seasons 7-8 will be well received with time too. They weren’t fun to watch, I didn’t like what happened, but that was sort of the point. They will serve the over-arching story well in the end.
I actually disagree, people say a lot of things about the story that aren't true, then throw in a handful of valid criticisms, and if you try to point out the invalid ones they motte and bailey you and say that you are saying the work is flawless and point to the handful of valid criticisms to do so. So no I don't support this "say what you want", people who maliciously lie about what happens for the sake of denigrating the show, often for hatred of the company or the fans, should not be heard.

I'm pretty confident this volume is inspired by Alice in Wonderland, which was also referenced by Oscar and Ozpin last volume when they spoke about the tale "The Girl Who Fell Through the World". The tale is very similar to what was said in the teaser.
It seems Ruby is taking the role of Alice, and Little is the rabbit.
Well in the last volume Ozpin told Oscar a fairy tale called The Girl Fell Through The World, so it's definitley reference to Alice in Wonderland so yeah
I'm pretty sure some of the viewers who watched this got that vibe.
