Setting SMART Goals - How To Properly Set a Goal (animated)

  • If you want to succeed, you need to set goals. Without them you lack focus and direction. They also provide you with a benchmark to determine whether or not you're actually succeeding at them.
We all struggle sometimes to achieve our plans. And it's not that we lack the effort, but our goals are not structured efficiently.
To accomplish your objective you need to know how to set it up properly. You can't simply say, "I wish I could make more money" and expect it to happen.
A goal without a plan is just a wish.
It is also important to recognize, that not all objectives are created equal.
So, today I'll explain the SMART method of goal setting and how it will amplify your chances of actually succeeding.
    S stands for: Specific
Your goal must be clear and well defined. You can only get to where you want by defining precisely how you'll get there.
    M stands for: Measurable
Tracking the progress of your goal is an important part of keeping you motivated. It allows you to set milestones that you can celebrate when you achieve them and reevaluate when you don’t.
    A stands for: Attainable
Make sure that it's possible to achieve the dreams you set for yourself. Far too many people fall into the trap of setting impossible goals. While they may push you forward for a while, you will almost certainly end up giving up on them. Instead of being impossible, your goals should be challenging yet achievable.
    R stands for: Relevant
Your plans should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take. A common issue we face, is having too many goals at the same time, or pursuing the wrong goals. Unless your plan is relevant to your overall life plan, achieving it may not accomplish anything.
    T stands for: Time bound
This is one of the most important factors.
You plans must have a deadline. If you don't set a time limit you have basically unlimited time to achieve your goals.
But there's one last thing. Most people think that goal setting is a one time event. Like you set your goals once and you're done. However it's actually an ongoing process. It never ends.
Your plans will need evaluation and revision so it's important to stay flexible.

I actually set monthly goals, which is helpful in developing good habits. This year, I stopped drinking diet soda for 6 weeks, took a month off, re set the goal, and am off of soda permanently now. Diet soda was the ONLY soda I ever drank. Even more challenging since I don't drink coffee either (never did).

    ANSWERS :
1 . Difference between goal and wish .
A goal without a plan is just a wish meaning a wish is something you dream of , and a goal is something your going to accomplish .
    2. Your goal must be clear and well defined .
    3. Why would you want your goal to be measurable ?
Tracking the goal is good to show progress and to keep us motivated . So you know you can accomplish setting your goal to high will drain you eventually .
    4. What might one feel if they set goals that are not attainable ?
One might feel their goals aren’t attainable if their to high , don’t set a goal if you don’t have the ability to keep it .
    5. How would you ensure that a goal is relevant ?
Pursing one goal at a time , make sure you have a purpose .
    6. What tools are useful in making sure your goals are time-bound?
Keeping them on your mind so you don’t flop .
    7. However its actually an ongoing process ; it never ends . Your plans need evalution and revision so its important to stay flexible !

I love how you've illustrated this. SMART goals are 'de rigueur' in coaching and business and I find them very useful. I have often found it useful to make a distinction between 'big dreams' and 'attainable goals', as I've seen some people try to 'SMART' the big dream. I find it's also work exploring impact bias. Thanks for this video!

Great video! Setting goals is essential to achieving success, but it's not just about deciding what you want to achieve, it's about setting goals that are specific and measurable. Goals that are specific and measurable help you focus on what you want to achieve and make it easier to track your progress.
Specific goals are goals that are clearly defined and leave no room for ambiguity. They answer the questions of what, why, and how. When setting specific goals, you need to ensure that they are achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
    What are measurable goals?
Measurable goals are goals that you can track your progress towards. These goals help you to see whether or not you're making progress and whether you need to adjust your plan. Measurable goals need to be quantifiable and have a clear indicator of success.
Examples of specific and measurable goals:
Let's take a look at some examples of specific and measurable goals:
Increase my website traffic by 30% in the next six months by creating new content and promoting it on social media.
Lose 10 pounds in the next three months by exercising three times a week and following a healthy diet plan.
Increase my email subscribers by 500 in the next three months by offering a free e-book to new subscribers and promoting it on social media.
Improve my public speaking skills by attending a public speaking course and giving a presentation in front of a live audience.

@@nicholasvanwyk5688 Sure, but as a teacher I was trying to show this to a group of young and healthy students (not in America). I've had students that are healthy that have parents telling them they need to lose weight and have taught students as young as 7 & 8 with eating disorders. Sometimes focusing too much on body weight isn't a good thing... eating healthy and exercising are great, but let that be the focus and not weight loss.

I was going to post a comment about how this is used for school, but it seems like that idea was taken already.

Ok, your wish of learning French reminded me something.
So.....I also wanna learn Korean, because I like kpop, k-dramas and Korean music. The problem is I alway have to rely on subtitles that's why I started to learn the language. So is it also useless??? Plz answer.
