I dont normally bother leaving comments, but this guy deffinitely deserves one. Non of this 'wannabe gansta' rubish, just straight talking, easy to follow tutorial. what a ledge! :)
I'm only a few vids in, but have to say that I'm already really appreciating your teaching style. Clear, concise and step by step. Seems well planned and thought out. Thanks
I’m so glad I found you all this years later, your content still holds up in quality (not video quality tho haha) very good content, I just got into vinyl collecting and accidentally got a DJ deck instead of just a normal turntable, I’ve always been interested in DJing and mixing so will probably give it a try so your guidance is a great help!
Thank you for these videos. I've wanted to learn for a very long time and started finally learning thanks to a friend this past Tuesday. Can't wait to get my own gear.
Excellent way of training. Very easy to follow. DJ Angelo you are very kind. I've been a DJ for over 24 years now, and this is one of the best tutorial I've seen for beginners. Cheers!!
Wow. Thanks. I have been DJing since 1996 and I have always struggled with this and the way you teach it makes so much more sense and I am really looking forward to applying it. I really appreciate you doing this. Respect ✊🏽 My Man
You've asked a great question and one that is often up for debate. It is possible to "scratch" on most modern CDJs but a lot of the principals won't apply as much of the artform cannot be expressed on CDJs. Although technology is always moving forward, "Turntablism" is authentically about using Turntables - needle on vinyl etc. Passionate turntablists will tell you that a CDJ just doesn't feel the same as manipulating vinyl on a turntable. The only CDJ that came close for me is the Numark CDX
Thank you sir! These are most helpful! I am not using turntables, but the technique is the same. Following along is a big thing! Coupled with a few other people's tutorials, and its getting lots easier. I'm 46, and if I can do it, you can too!
If you don't ask, you don't learn :) Yes, I am playing a record on the left turntable which is an instrumental beat and I am scratching a sound on a different record on the right turntable. (You can't see the left turntable because it is out of shot). The mixer between the 2 turntables allows you to hear 1 record or both records at the same time. Hope this helps. If you're completely new to DJing I'd recommend you check out the "Getting Started" tutorials by Ellaskins AKA The DJ Tutor.
You explain things so clearly and at the perfect speed. I spin edm on cdjs but always wanted to incorporate scratching into it and my hip hop nights and this helps so much! Props
Yo Angelo you got some sick skills - its funny tho cos its like watchin a british Qbert. I wish we had these vids back in 1990 when I was learning 2 scratch - all I had was fucked up faders, damaged vinyl, broken stylus's and my mum shouting "turn that noise down"...... moved out turned it up and spent the next 20 years happily scratching. These vids would of saved me 5+ years I reckon. Years ago it was so secretive nobody wanted you knowing their tunes, styles, techniques,
Yes, belt drive turntables don't have a lot of torque (turning power) so direct drive turntables are always ideal for DJing and especially turntablism. It's not impossible to perform on belt drives but you'll definitely need slippery slipmats and you may aso have to give the record a little push when releasing it to get it up to speed immediately.
Hell yeah thanks for the great tutorials.. this helps a lot, i'm a beginner and there is a lot of lame ass vids on how to scratch, and yours are the best i've found!
The funny thing is this video came out when I was trying to teach myself to scratch. Had I seen it then, it would of kept up with it. I found a bunch of accapellas to use over House beats. Thank you from across the pond.
Brilliant...got bored mixing techno after 20 years. This'll give me a reason to buy more tunes and maybe throw something differnt into techno mixes too.
Thank you DJ Angelo, these videos have really helped me understand the basics and was the perfect homework for practice. Id love to know the name of the beat you used in this video, many thanks from Canada 👊👊
You probably need to adjust the breaking force of your turntable. This controls the grip from the motor on the platter, and thus how fast the record stops and starts when you push the button. There will always be *some* ramp-up/-down in speed, but at least you'll come closer :) The record can also be slipping on the slip mat. In that case you'll just have to fine-tune your little push ;)
Amazing tutorials!! Big ups to DJ Angelo for putting these up on youtube, you are helping countless people! Just one question, where is that amazing beat at 2:16 from?
Excellent job! May God Bless all of your endeavors! Question, I'm just getting started with the Dj'ing. Are the principles the same with controllers? I have a Traktor S4 and I use Traktor Pro software of course.
This is amazing, thank you! Also, where does that beat come from?! I wanna keep listening to it EDIT: I found out the sample, it's L'anamour by Serge Gainsbourg

the instrumental is: prior to the past by the last skeptik
Thumbs up so everybody can see
