Good sir, i recently went through the Dark Knight quests and i have to say it is a wild ride. The emotional trauma actually makes your MMO character feel real and not just this unstoppable emotionless being. Keep up the great work!
The DRK questline, especially the first one, is one of the few times the WoL is allowed to feel like a real person. Its essentially a glorified therapy session. All the rage, frustration and sadness they feel bubbles up and comes spilling out through the quest series. Because, yeah, carrying the fate of Eorzea (and more!) on your shoulders with sometimes barely a "thank you" and *yet another* threat right around the corner; WOULD be incredibly stressfull and would take huge toll mentally. Natsuko Ishikawa is brilliant and the fact that she was the lead writer Shadowbringers and Endwalker, both of which are praised very highly by the community, says everything you need to know about the wild ride that awaits!
The DRK questline (for level 50, 60, 70, and 80) are all Ishikawa's work, with the first one being one of her first big hits, and it's a fan favorite. She's on a different level from any other MMO writer, and everything she touches (including ShB and EW) is lauded with praise.
Absolutely. Her lack of input for Dawntrail really shows as its MSQ was dogshit. God I just want to be emotionally destroyed again in more than just 1 cutscene, and have a villian I can understand, Emet was the best. And no wuk lamat, please.

My own issues with DT's writing are the over reliance on a single character for both halves, the rushing of the plot in the second half, another reality ending threat.... If you haven't yet, go back and read the journal entries for the DRK quests. I don't remember if you have to be on DRK, but they're written very differently compared to other quests.
The DRK questlines were written VERY well and you may be interested to know the writer who wrote this also wrote ShB and EW. You aren't wrong to feel so much anger and rage at this point in the game, what's been done to the WoL is completely unfair. Forge ahead, my friend.
@Peashooter521 TH-cam is ramping up their moderation for 2024. Certain words will trigger it, so the longer your post is, the more likely you are to use one of this words.
Hold on to this feeling, carry it with you throughout all of Heavensward. Everything will be revealed in time. Fray is with you, it's so worth it! But I highly recommend continuing to level Dark Knight even if you main Dragoon, all of the quests are worth playing. Enjoy, stand tall, and may the light of the crystal be with you. Also don't feel bad about struggling with Dark! It's very different from how Warrior plays, and it takes a while to adjust, hang in there. But yes I love dark knight, it left a huge impact on me.
The DRK quest has the same twist as Fight Club. It's kinda disappointing if you catch on early that people never address Fray, because that makes it kinda obvious. Even when he's the one who yells at people, they only tell YOU to calm down. Fray even takes one of the more iconic lines from the movie: Fray says "Only when you have renounced everything are you free to do anything." The line from Fight Club is "It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything."
Some actually do acknowledge Fray to some extent, turning towards them when they speak, but never responding directly to them. It always made me wonder if that was an oversight or a trick of the WoL's mind since they hadn't communed deeply enough yet to be one with their darkside, with that disparity affecting their perception of even other people and their subtleties.
Great content brother, really enjoying hearing everything you got to say, fucking love this game. Just wait my guy, the story only gets so much bigger and deeper, and more personal. As someone whos been here from the begining, ARR, really is the lowest point in the story, and i dont say that with any discredit to ARR. The story just really does get that much better with each xpac and layer. You are gonna have a blast, and if you're already resonating on a personal level, expect to do so a lot more. I find myself resonating with with so many of these stories as well. So much love and thought in every bit of this game, its hard not to. I'm pretty convinced that's what this game is here for, to resonate, for whoever needs it for whatever reason. The world can be pretty bleak, people are people, and it can be hard to navigate or undestand how to feel about things sometimes. I'm so thankful to still have the bards and story tellers we have today, to help me navigate and really figure my own self and shit out. Best of luck with everything in your life brother, this channel included!

The name of the writer who designed the Dark knight role quest is Natsuko Ishikawa. Also Shadowbringers’s MSQ writer. Please give her a shout out thanks. 🙏
I would say the Dark Knight storyline isn't about succumbing to the darkness, especially the later ones. It's more about mastering your dark self which is a sort of psychologic term for our inner self. Your raw emotions, feelings, things that drive you beyond simple survival ( which is more the physical or Light side of our selves. ) Saying that however...The dark knight quests stay really good, make sure you do the level 80 cap quest for it too, because your log won't tell you about it! Finally, Dark Knight is easily the hardest tank in the game to play well so don't be discouraged if that's your only taste of tanking. Warrior is the easy mode version of Dark Knight and still has a compelling questline that's more 'fun'.
DRK questlines are the best, I look forward to your takes on later on in HW as you're in one of the best parts of the game (ShB blows it out of the water). Enjoy the journey, it's a damn good one!
I still have not forgiven the Lala that was responsible for it all, and it's been nearly a decade. The only grudge that I've kept longer than that was towards a relative of mine who finally passed away last year.
I personally love playing dark knight and it's story. So much so, when me and a friend finished Endwalker and the raid tier just came out. He suggested, I tried playing Gunbreaker or Warrior. Since, they were the only tanks people would let in their party. I quickly rejected the suggestion. I'm not bashing the other tanks, I haven't played them yet. So I don't know any of their stories. But I could not dropping the class right after I finished dark knight's story for the new raid tier.
DrK is the only tank that got a good story. GnB is C tier, maybe B tier, quest writing at best from what I remember. War is mostly jokes and gags with a stupid job trainer named Curious Gorge who looks and acts the part (yes I spelled that right). Some have compared it to the Manderville quests, but minus the effort. YMMV. And Pal. They just hate us Paladins for some reason. There are multiple reddit threads about how bad it is. The DrK NPC even mocks the writing of the Paladin quests at one point. They should delete the paladin quests and connect Gladiator to Gunbreaker. Write a few filler quests or lower the starting level for GnB. Then write something completely new and different for PLD. I can think of a lot of things it could tie into in ShB and EW (if Ishgard is too crowded), which would be fine since PLD is just ok at 80, doesn't get good until 90 and pretty much stays the same at 100.
I still want to know why this lalalass's dark self is tall, lean and male. But yeah, the DRK story is one of my favorites if not my favorite (listen, I just don't do favorites well, ok? I main four classes!) And the DRK visuals are my favorite among tanks. I didn't care that the Bigwigs got pissy at me, but then... I've been accused of having Problems With Authority since kindergarten. To me, "the bosses got mad at me and want me anywhwere else" means "less putting up with those jerks". So yesh, that's something to which my reaction is atypical.
Oh ya, let yourself be immersed in the story. Best way to experience the msq. Played as BLM through ARR and first reaction to the betrayal is "the secret to black magic is simple... Everything burns".
Definitely get what you're trying to relay. I replayed with a sprout 1 on 1 last year and their ability to cold read (and just flatly take the facts as their presented) really stood stark against how I "learn" a story.
I experienced a lot of the same stuff as you (including seeing a DRK in a dungeon - for me it was in the very first dungeon - and saying to my sister: "That, whatever that job is, I want to play that, ASAP", only to find out that I had to wait till HW to unlock it lol). Without spoiling future questlines, the themes that resonated with you are there in later DRK questlines, but they don't take center-stage in the same way. It's also worth mentioning that they did away with job questlines starting in Shadowbringers, due to how many jobs there are in the game now. Instead they have questlines for each role (currently: tank, healer, melee, phys ranged, magic ranged... iirc in ShB phys ranged and casters were in one questline - ranged dps). But they did normal (yellow) sidequests for each job after the corresponding role quest's complete to wrap up each of the job questlines, which I forgot about until recently. So of course the first one I did was the DRK one, and really loved it. I'll be interested to see what you think of the next DRK quests!
Little refresher for the ShB DPS role questlines: there was one for Casters alone, and one for all physical DPS(so phys range and melees). Hope it helps!
I would say temper your expectations (it’s still an mmo and not everyone is a dark knight) but keep your eyes open (some of the ways the game plays to the darkness and anti-hero feelings, in main story, are served with more interpretation and less on the nose than Fray)
The Dark Knight story is always poignant. I recommend doing them after the main story of each expansion for best results. Though class quests stop at 70. It is role quests from then on out. Last story quest bit for each class is 80 for each class that came out before Shadowbrings. It maybe Endwalker
Not gonna argue, but DrK gets a LOT of nice looking weapons. Or to put it better, it often seems like all DrK weapons look good, its just the default setting. As a non-DrK main sometimes a little jealous. Also I barely play DrK but DrK weapons somehow taking up too much glam space.
I'm gonna be honest the quests from 30 to 45 really did not keep my interest but was saved by the lvl 50 quest as it was the only good one in that arc, 51 to 60 Sid was okay
What made the DRK story so impactful at the time (beyond helping put Ishikawa on the map which led to her writing the absolute high points of FFXIV, Shadowbringers and Endwalker) is that it was the very first time that you, the Warrior of Light displayed any kind of agency beyond nodding and doing whatever the rest of the cast needed you to do. It was the very first time the WoL had a voice, and they were angry. Angry at the injustice being inflicted upon them, and they were fully justified. The Warrior of Light has plenty of dialogue options nowadays but back in ARR and HW it was more or less nonexistent, so the WoL was a true blank slate in that they didn’t really express any kind of emotion or thought on anything they did or was done to them.
I adore DRK and everything it stands for, but sadly I had to drop it in Dawntrail due to other tanks outperforming in every way. It still has a special place in my heart and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a rework to make my beloved class feel satisfying to play again
I'm glad you enjoyed the DRK quest! They are by far Top Tier World Class story telling in FFXIV and even I revisit them from time to time all these years later. I will say don't stress too much about the game play about DRK especially while leveling because while DRK thematically is amazing (among my personal favorites) as it stands currently in comparison to the other tanks it's uh...well they weren't just talking about in lore suffering that's for sure! But coming from my own experience and the fact you can just play with AI all the way through the story it is certainly doable but you are going to struggle more than just about any other tanks, especially pre 70. Overall I'm glad you're enjoying the Job and I agree, I also resonate more with the anti hero's and villains' in stories but I'm just a sucker for anything Divine or Demonic Themed, doubly so if it's got a gothic touch on top.
It is not just user error, early level dark knight can be rough, they have the least sustain out of all the tanks, and in general is in a rough spot right now. It is still my main tank.
Don't worry about being bad in dungeons when playing DrK . That's not necessarily you, it's a common complaint right now that DrK needs some degree of rework and that's part of it. I have all tanks at lv100. DrK definitely feels the worst in dungeons. I had it leveled to 90 at the start of Endwalker and never touched it till the new expansion when the cap was raised to 100. When I went back to level it I kinda hated playing it at 90 but at 100 felt it was ok. Not great, just ok. That said it does fine in high end content like raids and trials (dungeons are more casual content fwiw). I main Paladin, which is usually considered worst tank. It really doesn't matter. You will do fine with any job so long as you take the time to learn and practice it. So if you really like a given job and that gives you reason to stick with it, don't sweat it. That's the healer's job, lol
DRK is the garbage that made me not want to play healer anymore because that class sucks so bad as a tank. When an idiot with that class pulls 2 groups in a dungeon, you can always expect to wipe.
Read your quest jounal, bro. :)
How are u this hot with only 1,000 subs. Instant sub lol
Gosh I feel like I need to pin this comment 🙏
Why are you wearing a jacket indoors?
its too bad dark is fucking terrible right now. dark is so god damn cool
DRK is the garbage that made me not want to play healer anymore because that class sucks so bad as a tank. When an idiot with that class pulls 2 groups in a dungeon, you can always expect to wipe.
many 7.x drk vids critiquing its shortcomings but here is one that talks about how awesome the LV30 to 50 story arc is. Quite refreshing
